California bill calls to divest pension funds from Turkish government

2019-06-15 19:34:45

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian is supporting a legislative push in Sacramento to prohibit major California public pension funds from investing in the Turkish government, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

The bill would require the $360 billion California Public Employees’ Retirement System to halt new investments in the Republic of Turkey and abandon existing ones if the U.S. government imposes sanctions on the country for failing to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The bill was authored by Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian, who also represents the central-southern San Fernando Valley. It passed the state Assembly last month, despite opposition from the pension funds, who argue that divesting from Turkey could diminish investment returns.

The effort to divest public funds from Turkey began at UCLA in a successful campaign by Armenian student activists in 2014. All nine UC schools followed suit before the Glendale-based Armenian National Committee of America began campaigning for the legislation on a state level.

Both counciman Krekorian — who respresents a large swath of the eastern San Fernando Valley —  and Assemblyman Nazarian are confident that the bill will pass. A similar bill he authored passed both state houses and was vetoed by then-Governor Jerry Brown in 2017, but Gov.

“Both houses of the Legislature have seen this issue as a moral issue,” said Nazarian in an email. “It is shameful that the Government of Turkey refuses not only to recognize its role in the Armenian Genocide, but the fact that the Armenian Genocide even took place.”

“The Republic of Turkey has imprisoned tens of thousands of dissenters, opposition leaders, academicians and journalists seeking to promote democracy and human rights,” said Krekorian.

Handicrafts of Isfahan’s Jolfa: Epitome of Iranian-Armenian Art

Tasnim, Iran
  • June, 16, 2019

Those arts were produced in line with models of medieval Armenian art and in conformity with Ancient Iranian arts.

June 10th marks World Handicraft Day. Some 600 handicrafts have been registered on the list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Of that figure, 450 belong to Iran. Interestingly, 287 handicrafts out of 450 belong to Isfahan.

Around 300 years ago during King Abbas Safavid, Armenians migrated from the banks of the Aras River to the banks of Zayandehrood in Isfahan to remain immune to the mass killing of Armenians. After the threat was removed, they stayed there.

Little by little, Armenians in Isfahan managed to spread their traditional and native arts and produced works of art using gold and tile as well as works of miniature and Qalamkari, part of which is on show at Isfahan’s Vank church.

Turkey stresses importance of relations with Azerbaijan

by  Zehra Nur Düz |

‘Azerbaijan’s happiness is our happiness, and its sorrow is our sorrow’, says Turkish youth and sports minister

ANKARA

Turkey’s youth and sports minister reiterated the strategic importance of bilateral relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan at a reception Friday in the capital.

“Azerbaijan’s happiness is our happiness and its sorrow is our sorrow,” said Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu, speaking at the opening ceremony.

The Azerbaijan Embassy held the event to mark its National Day, Armed Force’s Day and the 100th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Diplomatic Service.

Kasapoglu underlined that bilateral relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan, two “sister countries”, had rapidly developed since Azerbaijan gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

He described the two countries as leading political and commercial partners as per the late Azeri President Haydar Aliyev’s motto ‘One nation, two states’.

“It is one of the fundamental duties of all of us to increase this partnership, which is strengthened by the sincere friendship and the everlasting brotherhood of our peoples,” Kasapoglu said.

Congratulating Azerbaijan’s National Day, Kasapoglu added: “Turkey is Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan is Turkey.”

Turkey’s Family, Labor and Social Services Minister Zehra Zumrut Selcuk, Land Forces Commander Umit Dundar, Naval Forces Commander Adnan Ozbal as well as ambassadors and diplomatic and military mission representatives in Ankara attended the reception.

Upper Karabakh conflict

Commenting on the Upper Karabakh conflict, Kasapoglu said: “We hope the Upper Karabakh conflict will be resolved as soon as possible within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and in accordance with the rules of international law and the related UN decisions.”

He reiterated that Turkey supports all efforts by Azerbaijan for the peaceful resolution of the problem.

Karabakh — a disputed territory between Azerbaijan and Armenia — broke away from Azerbaijan in 1991 with military support from neighboring Armenia, and a peace process has yet to be implemented.

Three UN Security Council resolutions and two UN General Assembly resolutions refer to Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe refers to the region as being occupied by Armenian forces.

The Armenian occupation led to the closing of the frontier with Turkey, which sides with Baku in the dispute.

Brotherly countries, strategic allies

“Turkey has always stood by Azerbaijan,” said Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim, underlining that Turkey was the first country to recognize Azerbaijan 100 years ago.

“Turkey and Azerbaijan are brotherly countries and strategic allies and will remain forever so,” Ibrahim added.

Azerbaijani singer Elnur Huseynov performed local and foreign pieces at the event, which also featured Azerbaijani music and traditional cuisine.

Squeeze on Christians in the Holy Land
A court has upheld a dubious deal giving a Jewish settler group possession of church owned buildings

Christian leaders in Jerusalem are aghast at an Israeli Supreme Court judgment this week that upheld a secret and dubious deal giving an extremist Jewish settler group ownership of several strategic properties in the Christian quarter of the Old City.

There is a fear among all churches that this will increase pressure on the dwindling number of Christians in the Holy Land and encourage fresh attempts by right-wing Israeli politicians to impose new taxes on the large property holdings of many churches. Christian leaders also fear that settler determination to “Judaise” Jerusalem could accelerate Christian emigration, hollowing out the community and threatening regular worship and ageold Christian festivals.

The ruling comes 15 years after a former Greek Orthodox Patriarch leased four sites, including a hostel right beside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, to Ateret Cohanim, whose aim is to “redeem” land in Jerusalem and expel the city’s long-term non-Jewish residents. The 99-year leases were negotiated in secret by a junior 29-year-old official of the patriarchate for a sum less than half the market value. He subsequently fled to Greece, where he was arrested with more than (EURO)100,000 in cash and more than that again in jewellery and watches. He then escaped to Panama.

News of the deal caused fury in the Greek Orthodox Church and among other Christian denominations in Jerusalem. Patriarch Irineos was deposed within weeks and reduced in status to a monk, but key documents relating to the contract disappeared. A new patriarch, Theophilos III, was elected and he declared the leases invalid because they were obtained by fraud, without the agreement of the Holy Synod or the patriarch’s signature.

Ateret Cohanim waited four years before taking legal action in 2008 to take possession of the four sites, comprising a substantial hotel at Jaffa Gate, a smaller nearby hotel, a property near Herod’s Gate and the St John hostel, now occupied by settlers with armed guards.

In 2017 a Jerusalem district court hearing ruled against the church, which then appealed. The appeal court delivered its final verdict on Monday. Unless substantial new evidence can be produced, this cannot be challenged, even though the judges in both court cases criticised the methods used by Ateret Cohanim.

The behaviour of former Patriarch Irineos was widely condemned by Christians in the region and by the other churches, especially because the Greek Orthodox Church is the most senior, has by far the largest land holdings and is one of the three churches – together with the Armenians and the Roman Catholics – with responsibility for guarding the Holy Sepulchre.

Recent relations between the Israeli authorities and the 13 Christian churches in Jerusalem have become increasingly fraught. Until recently the city’s former mayor Nir Barkat respected the churches’ cherished “status quo”, which broadly argues that their rights and properties, most of which were established in Ottoman times, should not be changed until the overall political status of Jerusalem has been settled in an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.

Two years ago, however, he announced new property taxes on church land backdated for the past 27 years, amounting to about $200 million. Fearing bankruptcy, the churches reacted swiftly and in February last year closed the Holy Sepulchre for three days, an unprecedented move, which caught public attention in the US and alarmed Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister. Within days the new taxes were set aside. However, the churches, co-ordinating their responses to the civil authorities through a council of them all where the Anglicans provide the secretariat, fear that because of the severe shortage of building land in Jerusalem there will be new attempts to tax their properties.

In a statement the Greek Patriarchate said: “Our legal team presented a clear case of bribery and corruption at the hands of the plaintiffs, Ateret Cohanim. It is depressing that such corruption is not regarded by the court as having a material impact on the sales that resulted from it.” The church’s concern now was for the tenants of the properties.

Founded in 1978, Ateret Cohanim runs a yeshiva (religious school) in the Old City and buys property from Arabs and Armenians. The organisation reportedly owns more than 70 buildings in the Muslim quarter of the Old City. Most of its considerable funds come from supporters in the US. The judgment on Monday noted that the organisation had paid $35,000 to the Greek patriarchate official who negotiated the deal, and criticised its failure to explain this in court. But it ruled that this did not affect the validity of the sale.

Many of the churches in Jerusalem run schools and hospitals, funded by the rents collected from tenants on their lands. The churches say they fulfil a vital function in offering Christians education, although many Muslims also attend these schools, seen as generally of higher standard than state schools in the West Bank. The exodus of Christians from across the West Bank and Jerusalem makes these schools less viable and weakens the argument for the need for churches to retain the large property holdings inherited from Ottoman times.

Christian leaders argue, however, that they also have a huge responsibility to maintain holy places and shrines and minister to the increasing number of pilgrims arriving each year. More than two thirds of tourists to Israel are Christians visiting the Holy Land, a factor that carries some weight in the present arguments between various right-wing groups in Israel.

The junior official who negotiated the deal has fled to Panama

Azerbaijani Press: Pashinyan’s totalitarian democracy

Pashinyan’s totalitarian democracy

by: ASTNA.biz

Since then, the author of the democratic “Velvet Revolution” is increasingly showing signs of a totalitarian way of governing Armenia. In the first year of Pashinyan”s rule, his rally threats to “roll up the asphalt” of internal opponents were explained by the political inexperience of the new Armenian leader, in the second year, the inexperience of the attacks on democratic values cannot be explained. Pashinyan”s dictatorial receptions began to receive attention even in international and European organizations after the Prime Minister blocked Armenian courts for half a day on May 20, 2019, mobilizing crowds of his admirers for this.

“We wish to express our concern in connection with the appeal of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to his supporters about blocking all courts,” said Sadjad Karim, head of the European Parliament”s EU-Armenia parliamentary cooperation committee, who also expressed concern about the “idea vettinga “(checking the judges for compliance with the position).

In Armenia, they write that “Pashinyan broke loose” after Robert Kocharian was released from the courtroom. In June, Nikol Pashinyan and his supporters in the government announced the need for a “hard response” to the actions of the opposition and even demanded reprisals against the participants of the anti-Pashinyan flashmob in Yerevan. Pashinyan again began to talk about conspirators, this time pointing to a new opposition group in black T-shirts. Three weeks ago, he made an official speech in which four pages four times said about the conspiracy. The most interesting thing for Azerbaijanis is that Nikol linked the conspirators with the possibility of defeat in the war with Azerbaijan.

The author of the blog “Political Geography of the South Caucasus” reports about a unique phenomenon, new to the region: posters were posted in Armenia offering citizens to “knock” on committing criminal acts. Since the political opponents of the Prime Minister are now called “conspirators”, it is therefore suggested that citizens should inform the police about political actions against Pashinyan.

Yerevan analysts explain Pashinyan has accustomed totalitarianism by its economic failures caused by the premier”s inability to create an effective government. Within the framework of government reform, the ministries are united. However, it turned out that the ministries are unable to perform new functions, in particular, the Ministry of Economy cannot work for the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Territorial Administration does not fulfill the functions of the Ministry of Energy. The reform was delayed, starting in January, but until recently, the reduced five ministries continued to operate in a passive mode, where the former deputies combined the activities of the minister.

Ministers and Deputy Ministers (26 deputies) were reduced. On June 7, Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan resigned. The reason for the resignation is not reported, but Zeynalyan responded to the prime minister”s call this way to block the courts and check the professionalism of the judges. Far from all the candidates who are offered this agree to the new appointments, as they fear that they will have to take responsibility for what they cannot predict, a Yerevan-based blogger reports.

Pashinyan’s methods led to the emergence of new political organizations that chose harsh methods of dealing with the current government. The party “One Armenia” becomes the most moderate in the right, conditionally speaking “Ter-Petrosyan” political field, in which, judging by its name, the occupied Karabakh is already included in the state with its capital in Yerevan. The second right political force is the National Agenda party. Against Pashinyan are Dashnaks and the Sargsyan RPA, and his most ardent enemies are the new movements – Adekvad and VETO, which chose tough methods of fighting Pashinyan. In addition, at the head of Adekvad is Pashinyan”s recent associate in the rally events.

In Armenia, they speak of a high, 82%, popular support for Pashinyan. The blogger believes that the premier”s popularity cannot but decrease, since he has not fulfilled any task declared at the rally. Armenia”s relations with Azerbaijan began to deteriorate even more; last week, after a long lull, snipers again fired at the fronts, yesterday Armenians launched a missile at the Azerbaijani combat aircraft, the day before yesterday Azerbaijani positions were fired at by Armenian mortar gunners. There are those killed on both sides, Defense Minister Tonoyan awarded saboteurs who killed our soldier. Pashinyan”s populist program on creating confidence-building measures between Armenians and Azerbaijanis failed. Four months ago, local elections were held, where out of 20 communities, the authorities won only two.

Armenia discusses Pashinyan”s lack of a personnel reserve. He appoints to high positions not on a professional, but on an ideological basis. This quality makes Pashinyan related to the former President of Georgia M. Saakashvili; currently he is considered a criminal in Georgia. Pashinyan continues to rule Armenia with the power of the crowd; now they say that the next ones he will send to the bestial supporters will be the Yerevan media and the authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh. Moreover, he openly threatened to do so.

People in Yerevan write about the character of the prime minister: impulsive, unstable, “may not react to any information channel, but reacts sharply to it with a delay. And vice versa – reacts sharply, and then gradually “passes back”, that is, it is very difficult to predict behavior of Pashinyan, which is a dangerous quality for a leader, because it impedes him in the formation of informal coalitions and in the formation of strategic relations,” the aforementioned blogger writes.

We talked about the similarity of Pashinyan to Saakashvili. In Pashinyan”s rhetoric, analogies are also traced with Azerbaijani political propaganda from the authorities. The most frequently repeated thesis of official Baku was the statement about the “no-tax” development of the Azerbaijani economy. Pashinyan expressed at a recent economic forum with the participation of Italian businessmen: “One of the government’s priorities is the abrupt development of the country’s economy… For one year politically, we were able to eradicate systemic corruption, eradicate monopolies politically… An unprecedented situation is also in world history, when, after a revolution, a country is not experiencing economic shocks, and is not on the recessionary stage. This means that in Armenia there are special and interesting conditions for economic activity… It is planned to create such an ecosystem in Armenia so that every talented person has the opportunity to realize his talent, enrich and enrich,” said N. Pashinyan on June 10, 2019.

In the same speech, he reported that in the first quarter of this year, 7.1% economic growth was recorded in Armenia and the indicator of economic activity in April of this year amounted to 9.2%. The official figures of the Armenian economic statistics are commented on by the opposition with irony and distrust. They report a significant drop in exports of the main Armenian goods exported abroad. Export of only brandy increased, by 8%.

Armenian Communist Party asks Putin to Restrain Azerbaijan and Bring Russian Peacekeepers into Conflict Zone

Baku / 06/15/19/ Turan: The Communist Party of Armenia appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with an open letter, calling him to “actively intervene” in the negotiation process on the Karabakh settlement.

“The Communist Party of Armenia appeals to you in the conditions of the escalating situation around our republic and the Karabakh conflict.

Over the past year, some international mediators have been trying to intensify efforts for a Karabakh settlement in the absence of consensus between the parties. This led to high expectations of Azerbaijan and aggravation of the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone.

We appeal to you, the President of the ally, to personally intervene in the negotiation process both within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group and by using the possibilities of direct influence on the leadership of Azerbaijan. Only your personal intervention can stop the escalation in the Karabakh conflict zone, which is fraught with the most serious consequences for all the parties.

We also consider it relevant to consider the possibility of locating the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the Karabakh conflict zone, which will correspond to the fundamental interests of the Armenian people.

The Communist Party of Armenia regards as an extremely undesirable process the strengthening of other geopolitical players in the region, in practice only pursuing their own goals, contrary to the interests of all the peoples of the explosive region.

We hope for your direct active intervention in the situation, which may prevent undesirable developments,” News.am quotes the appeal.-02D-

Officials, staff of Armenian judicial system resign en masse

JAM News

The prime minister recently demanded that judges who cannot remain objective and who know they should not be in their position should resign

A series of large-scale resignations in the judicial system has begun in Armenia.

On June 14, two members of the Supreme Judicial Council, Sergey Megryan and Armen Bektashyan,  submitted their resignation.  The Supreme Judicial Council is composed of ten members, six of whom have already abandoned their seats.

Other representatives of the judicial system have also resigned.  On June 7, Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan himself resigned.

The series of resignations began after the statement of the Prime Minister of Armenia on the need for reforms in the judicial system.

“The people perceive the judiciary as a remnant of the former corrupt system, where conspiracies against people were constantly developed and carried out…Obviously, the public does not trust the court decisions. And I say this not only as the prime minister, but also as a representative of the Armenian people, who has the right to speak on its behalf…” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan has promised that the government will pursue the creation of a more effective and impartial judicial system, noting that constitutional changes and a referendum may be necessary.

Pashinyan outlined steps for further actions to improve the country’s judicial system and to get rid of the traditional ‘puppet’ system:

  • all judges, without exception, must pass a vetting, that is, a reliability check
  • all judges who have made decisions with violations recognized by the European Court of Human Rights must resign or be dismissed as must judges who themselves realize that they cannot be objective

A week after this statement, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Gagik Harutyunyan, first resigned.

He had held this post since March 5, 2018, and since 1996 had been the chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia.

After Gagik Harutyunyan’s resignation, Gevorg Danielyan, acting head of the Supreme Judicial Council, resigned as well.

He was followed by a member of the Supreme Judicial Council Armen Khachatryan.

The closing link was the resignation of Sergei Megryan and Armen Bektashyan.

Iskra Kirov, Senior Researcher at the Open Society Foundation of the European Policy, says:

“Armenia really needs fundamental changes. The previous government fully controlled the composition of the courts. The notorious judicial system served the interests of the authorities to preserve this very power.

“The Prime Minister of Armenia and his government should clearly show to its international partners and their people that they are serious about the issue of judicial and legal changes and are determined to reform the right way.”

European specialists have expressed readiness to help in the reformation of Armenia’s judicial system, which has been explicitly welcomed by PM Pashinyan.

Maine lawmaker with Armenian roots to run for Congress seat

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, a Democrat with Armenian roots, is expected to formally announce in the coming weeks that she’s running for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ seat in 2020, five Democratic sources confirmed, according to HuffPost.

She will likely launch her campaign shortly after the close of the state’s legislative session on June 19, the three Democratic sources in Maine and two national Democratic strategists said.

Defeating Collins, the Maine moderate who infuriated liberals with her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, is key to Democratic hopes of winning back control of the Senate in 2020. Gideon is a top-tier recruit for the race and is expected to have at least the tacit backing of establishment groups like the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and EMILY’s List.

At the same time, the Senate GOP is marshaling its resources to defend Collins, who has long outperformed other Republicans on the ballot in Maine.

Gideon hinted last October that she would toss her hat in the ring following Collins’ controversial vote for Kavanaugh.

“Maine deserves a champion in the US Senate,” Gideon wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “After November I will be seriously considering how I can elevate the voices of people who deserve and demand to be heard and represented in Washington, DC.”

Gideon, a 47-year-old mother of three, has served in the Maine House of Representatives since 2012, representing the towns of Freeport and Pownal. Her legislative initiatives have focused on boosting the state’s economy, tackling the opioid crisis, investing in sustainable energy and increasing access to universal health care.

Earlier this week, Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) signed a bill sponsored by Gideon that expands access to abortion in the state by allowing health care professionals who are not doctors ― such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants ― to perform the procedure.

Gideon is a graduate of George Washington University and the daughter of an Indian immigrant father and a second-generation Armenian American mother.

Mikael Minasyan: The time to come out of trenches

Panorama, Armenia

Mikael Minasyan, Armenia’s former ambassador to the Holy See of Vatican and the Republic of Malta, has published an article in 168.am.

Panorama.am presents the full text of the article below

Armenian women can curse, and they are really good at it. This discovery was perhaps the biggest surprise on social media this past year, and this refers to very real Armenian women living in Armenia and abroad. Of course, it’s the level of mutual intolerance that a shock delivers any public discourse impossible.

Clearly, this is a global phenomenon that did not occur overnight but has gradually gained momentum. In 2015, the Pew Institute conducted a survey to find out if people can write a public comment, if that comment might offend another group of people. Some 35% of those surveyed said they could. In other words, one out of three people believe it is normal to post something on a social media, knowing for sure it might offend someone. Taking into consideration the polarizing policy in the world and Armenia, it is no accident that the numbers of such people and the degree of aggression in comments have hiked since 2015.

On the one hand, a divided, polarized and hostile society is extremely predictable. On the other hand, it is extremely vulnerable. Societies have become internally hostile, clashed and weakened before suffering defeat from an external enemy. This has many precedents in history, starting from the Roman Empire and leading up to our days.

To understand the societies you are dealing with explore its urban legends. In this sense, Armenia operates on medieval morals:

– The purpose of the struggle between the government and the opposition is to eliminate each other politically and morally. If you don’t curse at or eliminate your opponent, you are neither a real government nor a real opposition.

– The foreign relations discourse does not go beyond unfeasable dreams or unrealistic notions, and the person who proposes an idea about advancing Armenia’s interests immediately becomes pro-Russian, a pro-Western or pro- something else.

– In regard to the Artsakh issue, Azerbaijan borders Artsakh, but we Armenians have dug the trenches among ourselves. Those trenches enclose the political parties of peace and war, patriots and traitors, patriots and bigger patriots, traitors and bigger traitors, as well as people who are ready to make concessions and concessions-over-my-dead-body attitudes.

The society is polarized, and the public evaluations are at extremes:

– In Armenia, people are either heroes or criminals.
– In Armenia, the government is either always right or always wrong.
– In Armenia, the opposition is either in prison or a cheap puppet.
– In Armenia, a beloved artist is either posthumous or lives abroad.
– In Armenia, a businessman is either a benefactor or an oligarch.

As for oligarchs, we Armenians declare our wealthy compatriots abroad as heroes, but refer to the local manufacturers and businessmen in Armenia as internal enemies or “nation’s leaches”. Instead of seeking more effective mechanisms for social justice, we proclaim that nobody should live well until everyone lives well.  It’s like the well-known joke when the widow of a participant of the October Revolution asks the Bolsheviks what the people are fighting for, the Bolsheviks say people are fighting to make sure there are no wealthy people. After that, the widow says her husband was fighting to make sure there are no poor people.

Examples are plenty and destructivism continues. It sure is one way to live —by hating, dividing, labeling and discrediting. After all, you can eliminate, align, remove, empty and desert everyone, but what happens after that? Does that make us happier? Based on the happiness index, it doesn’t! Armenia has always been in the list of the unhappy, holding the 116th place out of 157 countries in recent years.

They say the memory of mankind is fortunately limited. It must be true; otherwise the erosive and useless debates about the past, as well as hindsight stand-offs would be more far-reaching. Groping along the post-independence years we keep opposing one decade to another, one leader to another, clashing teams, destroying achievements gained by predecessors, and we do it with a very special cruelty and thoroughness.

What is, after all, the purpose? What is the purpose of the cursing on social media, feeding social frustrations, cleansing and judging, revolutions and reforms, governments and oppositions? What is all this for and what will happen? What will be the consequence of removing, splitting, labeling and discrediting? Does it improve people’s lives or will it?  If so, then everything is right. But clearly there are no paths leading these actions to those results, are they? However, people want to see their dreams come true. People want to live a good life, as they always did. People aspire for welfare and look up to a leader who can take them there. Do the recent or ongoing events serve the purpose of creative the good life or is it simply an end in itself?

We can go on and on. This way we are building a punitive and aggressive society in which everyone lives and works to get to a point when it’s their turn to punish and be punished. In fact, the society of the future has to be encouraging, multiplying a good model, accomplishing a good initiative, and developing good thinking. There is simply no other path to live the good life and live prosperously. It is impossible to keep a war of hating, humiliating and eliminating each other with rotating success and still claim the good life. World experience shows that only societies capable of reaching an agreement on how they can create a good future will have the opportunity to live the good life. The right to live the good life can only be gained in an environment of realizing common interest, solidarity, mutual trust and partnership.

We have a collective choice to make — to live in solidarity or fight and eliminate everyone and everything, or move forward by fixing the mistakes. Today we have all we need — the same mistakes that several generations have made along with the consequences. We have the chance to not make those mistakes again and the opportunity to avoid making new ones. We have citizens who are ready and a generation that is able. All we need to do is to stop, take a deep breath, draw a line and start from scratch, and this is possible.
