Mkhitaryan: ‘Italy have changed’

Armenia captain Henrikh Mkhitaryan reveals just how quickly his move to Roma developed and admires the new Italy. “They like to play the ball more.”

The Azzurri’s trip to Yerevan kicks off on Thursday at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT) and arrives just days after Mkhitaryan left Arsenal for Serie A club Roma.

“Everything happened on the last day and right after the Tottenham game, I got a call from my agent,” Mkhitaryan said in his Press conference ahead of Armenia’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Italy.

“He told me that I have to fly to Rome the next day for a medical and to sign the contract. It is a great opportunity for me, as I didn’t get much playing time at Arsenal.

“I haven’t spent 90 minutes on the pitch for a while, but I am ready to play, as I’ve been training regularly. You play football not just with your feet, but also your brain. If you convince yourself that you can play 90 minutes, then anything is possible.”

Armenia are currently third in the group, but fresh from beating Greece 3-2 in Athens, while the Nazionale have won all four matches.

“There have been many changes to Italy since we last played them in 2012, with a new squad, Coach and philosophy of football. This Italy side likes to play the ball more than back in 2012, but we’ll still try everything possible to control the game.

“They are the strongest side in the group and won all four matches so far. The top two qualify from the group and we will be there fighting it out for qualification. There are no easy opponents in the group, as even Liechtenstein could pick up points.”

These nations have only played before in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, with Italy winning 3-1 away and held to a 2-2 draw in Naples.

Mkhitaryan and the Armenian Job

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining Roma and Italy facing Armenia, Vilizar Yakimov analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the ex-Arsenal midfielder and his national team.

When Henrihk Mkhitaryan landed in Rome to complete his deadline day loan move from Arsenal, the entire idea felt like one cobbled together at the last minute in a sense of desperation.

The Armenian midfielder’s arrival in the Eternal City should add some experience and depth to the young Roma midfield that lost Daniele De Rossi this summer. However, Mkhitaryan is obviously a completely different player, so it’s worth taking a look at how the ex-Arsenal man can help their cause.

Being 30 years of age, Mkhitaryan is obviously a seasoned player with significant European experience. The fact that the Armenian international broke into the European stage at Shakhtar Donetsk should also mean that he and Paulo Fonseca should be able to establish a strong understanding.

At least in theory, the Shakhtar bond between Mkhitaryan and Fonseca should turn the midfielder into one of the pillars of this new-look Roma side and this is something the Giallorossi undoubtedly need. However, the Arsenal loanee is not the most consistent, and considering that Roma are stacked with players with similar characteristics at his position, it could create problems.

The Giallorossi can count on Javier Pastore, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicolò Zaniolo and even Bryan Cristante in a more advanced role in midfield and that’s exactly where Mkhitaryan fits best. The captain of the Armenia national team has often featured as right winger for Arsenal, but his inability to track back and limited pace showed that he cannot be efficient there week in, week out.

Cengiz Under is obviously the preferred choice at right wing, which means that Mkhitaryan could be tried on the left, where Justin Kluivert is struggling to make an impression. However, Mkhitaryan’s versatility is something that Fonseca should not play with too much, as the attacking midfielder tends to lose confidence in a Higuain-esque manner and this often results in some anonymous performances. So where should Fonseca play Mkhitaryan?

It should be noted that the Armenian could be a valuable option from the bench, as Roma would need to show some depth if they want to have a credible shot at top four finish domestically, as well as a respectable Europa League campaign. However, in order to find Mkhitaryan’s best position, Fonseca might want to take a closer look at the Armenia national team.

The former Borussia Dortmund playmaker features in a deeper position for his home country and is often involved in the build-up play, which is normal considering that Mkhitaryan is undoubtedly Armenia’s best player.

The Armenians often play a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, which seem to be the favourite set-ups of their Coach Armen Gyulbudaghyants. Playing Mkhitaryan further back gives him the opportunity to play with the ball more often and his role is key for Armenia’s transition, as the 30-year-old is often able to find another teammate in a more advanced position.

Armenia are very dangerous on the break, as although not so physical, almost all their forwards are very pacey and often exchange positions, which confuses the opposition. Again Mkhitaryan’s role in his side’s counter attacking set-up is key, as he is often the one starting the whole move from deep with a sharp pass or dribble.

The Armenians are extremely aggressive when they are playing at home, where Mkhitaryan is often able to spend more time in the opposition half than usual, which increases the danger. Considering that Thursday’s game with the Azzurri will be held at the Republican Stadium in Yerevan, Roberto Mancini’s men should probably pay special attention to the new Roma acquisition.

Armenia currently sit in third place in Group J with six points from four games, but it’s worth saying that Gyulbudaghyants’s team won their last two outings against Liechtenstein and Greece. The home defeat that the Armenians suffered against Finland by 2-0 in March showcased some of the team’s biggest weaknesses, as despite their aggression the hosts were unable to break the well-organized Scandinavian defence and logically struggled to cope with them physically.

Mancini’s Italy is obviously less physical than Finland and considering that the Azzurri will aim to dictate the tempo and attack, Armenia’s main weapons will be their counter attacks.

Aras Özbiliz, Gevorg Ghazaryan and Edgar Babayan will be the main targets for Mkhitaryan’s passes, and considering their pace it would be important for Italy not to open themselves too much when attacking. Putting their captain aside, the Armenians don’t have enough creativity to cause trouble for Italy, if the Azzurri backline are in their places.

Armenia have also struggled massively in the full back areas, so Italy’s wingers should be able to exploit that weakness. Both Federicos – Chiesa and Bernardeschi – are expected to start out wide in Mancini’s 4-3-3 formation, so if Italy manage to weather off the storm that is expected during the first minutes of the game, the Armenians should have plenty of problems in that area.

Ironically, Italian defenders need to start thinking of Mkhitaryan even before his Roma debut in Serie A. Although the role of the Armenian captain at the Capital club might not be clear yet, there is little doubt that Mkhitaryan will be the main threat for the Azzurri.

ARMENIA

  • Back-to-back wins have moved Armenia up to third in Group J and boosted their hopes of qualifying for the European Championship for the first time.
  • All of the players who started in the last qualifier against Greece in June have been included in the squad again, so the starting line-up is likely to be similar.
  • Captain Henrikh Mkhitaryan faces the nation where he now plays his domestic football after joining Roma on loan, while fellow attackers Aleksandr Karapetyan, Tigran Barseghyan and Gevorg Ghazaryan have all scored in each of the last two matches.

Predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Hayrapetyan; Hambardzumyan, Haroyan, Ishkhanyan, Kamo Hovhannisyan; Mkrtchyan, Grigoryan; Barseghyan, Mkhitaryan, Ghazaryan; Karapetyan

ITALY

  • Italy are unbeaten in their last eight matches including friendlies and have conceded just two goals in the process, and they have also won each of their last eight European qualifiers.
  • Lorenzo Insigne, Giorgio Chiellini, Mattia De Sciglio and Bryan Cristante have all pulled out due to injury, with Vincenzo Grifo, Francesco Acerbi, Danilo D’Ambrosio and Sandro Tonali replacing them in the squad.
  • That means that Alessio Romagnoli is set to partner Leonardo Bonucci in the centre of defence, while Stephan El Shaarawy is the natural replacement for Insigne on the left of attack.

Predicted line-up (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Mancini, Bonucci, Romagnoli, Emerson; Jorginho, Verratti, Barella; Bernardeschi, Immobile, El Shaarawy

Unavailable: Insigne (Injured), Chiellini (Injured), De Sciglio (Injured), Cristante (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Italy play a more attacking style of football under Mancini but they have retained their famous defensive solidity. The Azzurri have conceded just one goal in their four EURO 2020 qualifiers and although Armenia have scored six goals in their last two, that was against far weaker opposition.

Bonucci: ‘Armenia are always tough’

Leonardo Bonucci warned Armenia are “always tough” and the 2-2 draw effectively ruined their World Cup campaign, while revealing Henrikh Mkhitaryan memories.

The Euro 2020 qualifier kicks off on in Yerevan on Thursday at 17.00 UK time.

There is only one Italy player left in the current squad who faced Armenia in both previous Euro qualifier games in 2012-13.

“Those were difficult games. In the first leg, we were able to bring home three points in the last 10 minutes, while the 2-2 draw in Naples compromised our World Cup qualification, as that result meant we dropped out of the top seeds for the next draw,” said Bonucci in his Press conference.

“Armenia are always tough, they got an important result in Greece and that boosted their enthusiasm. We know everyone gives their all against Italy, as our visit generates a lot of attention, but we have come here to get the points.”

Armenia captain Mkhitaryan joined Roma on loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

“Roma have made a great signing. Mkhitaryan is important on an international level, we’ve clashed a few times and he was the first player I marked in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk. Serie A is difficult to play in, but I am sure he’ll adapt and do well for the Giallorossi.”

Giorgio Chiellini had surgery this week and will be out for around six months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

“We wish him all the best, he’s fired up for this challenge. We will miss his experience, charisma, leadership, talent and ability to help his teammates during difficult moments of the game. We hope he returns as soon as possible.

“We are different defenders, different people. I always try to give hunger, adrenaline and focus, Giorgio is a pillar of the Juventus and Italy squad, so in the months of his absence, I’ll try to keep things stable for when he returns!”

Bonucci was asked if the influx of overseas players is damaging to the growth of Italian talent.

“There has been an increase in foreign players, but also young Italians have taken on important roles at their clubs and some are learning with experiences abroad too. It all feeds back into the Nazionale.”

Bonucci had famously said his ex-Juventus teammate Moise Kean was partly to blame for the abuse from Cagliari fans, as he was ‘winding them up,’ but the same Sardinian ultras insulted Romelu Lukaku.

“It’s a delicate situation, certainly. We have the technology to find those who are to blame and not let them back into the stadiums. It doesn’t just happen in Italy, we’ve seen this all over Europe and it needs to be fought.

“I cannot comment on the Inter ultras statement because I haven’t read it.”

Bonucci was asked about the controversy sparked by Emre Can’s fury at being cut from the Juventus Champions League squad.

“I am happy to be here on international duty. I don’t know what happened with Emre Can, but I want to dedicate myself to the Nazionale right now, as it’s my duty to focus entirely on this great honour.”

Juventus are in the middle of a transformative experience under new Coach Maurizio Sarri.

“There is a new mentality with the Coach that we’ve seen over the first two rounds of the season. We attacked a lot, but also didn’t allow that much in defence.

“I’ve always said that over long tournaments, the strongest defence tends to win. The most important thing is realising we start defending and attacking all together with 11 players. So while the goalkeeper starts attacking moves from the back, the striker must also help out in defence.”

Mancini: ‘Armenia can push Italy’

Roberto Mancini has “one doubt” for his Italy starting XI and believes Armenia “have a chance of pushing for Euro 2020 qualification.”

It kicks off in Yerevan on Thursday at 17.00 UK time, then they visit Finland on Sunday, and the Azzurri are trying to maintain their 100 per cent record in the group after four straight wins.

“Our objective from the start was to qualify as soon as possible. We’ve done well so far, there can be difficulties after a four-month break and some players won’t be at 100 per cent physically, but these are two fundamental games for qualification,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Armenia mainly play in leagues that started some time ago, have enthusiasm after their victory in Athens and will know Italy have always had problems here.

“We cannot think that we’re going into an easy game, because there is no such thing. Armenia’s greatest strength is in attack, as they have four very good strikers with different characteristics, so that is where we must be wary.

“They changed their Coach not long ago and needed a little time to adapt, so struggled in their first two matches, but are just getting stronger. That is why we need to be very careful.

“Armenia are third in the group, coming off two very good results, so they have a chance of pushing for qualification, certainly.”

Stefano Sensi has been very impressive in the first two games of the season for Inter, so could he start for Italy?

“Sensi has a possibility of starting, there are two games to be played, so we’ll see.”

Italy have had to change their squad repeatedly over the last few days as injuries piled up for the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Mattia De Sciglio and Leonardo Spinazzola.

“It’s common at the start of the season, as you immediately go into important games without enough training time. Plus we’ve lost three players to some pretty serious injuries, which is a great pity, whereas the others will be back soon.

“It’s important for us to pick up where we left off, which is the second half against Bosnia. Unfortunately, that was months ago and there are inevitably going to be difficulties, but we’ll try to do our best in a moment of difficulty.

“The key is to focus on the same approach, which is very attack-minded, and that will improve as time goes on.”

Considering Torino started the season earlier to take part in the Europa League preliminary rounds, does that mean Andrea Belotti is the favourite ahead of Ciro Immobile to lead the line?

“Let’s be honest here, we have picked 10 of the starting XI and there is one doubt. I haven’t said who the doubt is or in what area and I won’t tell you now!”

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 3, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian foreign ministry has denied a media report purporting that the United States Government has demanded the Armenian Government to withdraw its team of de-miners and medics from Syria.

Currently there are a few dozen of de-miners and medics from the Armenian Center for Humanitarian Demining & Expertise deployed in Syria on a humanitarian mission.

“We have already denied this information many times. Currently an attempt is being made to re-circulate with new made-up details – which are also false – information which has already been denied by a governmental agency, and to develop a fake news made up from several layers. We find the ungrounded manipulations based on narrow personal interests of issues relating to the security of the Armenian community of Syria and the assistance provided to it to be inadmissible. Let me add off topic that ministries working in the security sector and their executives are in constant consultation over different issues, something the executives of these ministries themselves have numerously noted,” foreign ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said in response to an inquiry from Aysor, an online Armenian newspaper.
