Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble is pleased to announce three Bay Area concerts next month with renowned Armenian folk singer Hasmik Harutyunyan. Their program, titled Gorani: Love Songs to Lost Homelands, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935), a composer, folk song collector and an icon in the history of Armenia.

Performances will take place at the Green Music Center’s Schroeder Hall at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m.; at St. Vartan’s Armenian Church in Oakland, Friday, October 18 at 8 p.m.; and at the Hammer Theatre Center at San Jose State University, Saturday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for all events may be purchased online via direct links at kitka.org/events.

One of Armenia’s leading folk singers, Harutyunyan has received international acclaim for her mellifluous renditions of Armenian lullabies and her work with Yerevan’s Shoghaken Ensemble. Her nuanced and passionate interpretations of traditional melodies from historical villages across the Armenian plateau offer a mesmerizing glimpse into a lost world.

Together with Kitka’s eight vocalists, Harutyunyan will perform a program featuring lullabies and love songs, as well as emigrant and work songs, many collected and arranged by Komitas, considered the founder of modern Armenian classical music, and a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology. Thanks to his painstaking work, countless traditional songs survived the Armenian Genocide.

Gorani is a ritual Armenian song and dance form. Gorani signifies death and resurrection, symbolized by a sheaf of wheat, a perennial crop which returns in the spring each year. Gorani appears often in songs of remembrance and longing for one’s homeland or beloved.

Kitka’s concerts will also celebrate the release of Ororotsayin, Harutyunyan’s new book and CD anthology of 57 historical Armenian lullabies, most never previously recorded. Lullabies documented by Komitas are included in this collection and will be performed collaboratively by Harutyunyan and Kitka in the concert program.

In addition to these concerts, Kitka will host three public workshops in which Harutyunyan will share traditional Armenian dances and songs. Folk dance workshops will take place at Bethany Lutheran Church in Menlo Park, Friday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m., and at Monroe Hall in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m., Harutyunyan will lead a vocal workshop focused on Armenian lullabies and love songs at Silk Road House in Berkeley.

Next month’s concert and workshop series marks Kitka’s second major collaboration with Harutyunyan. Their first joint project, Caucasus Connections, a concert tour throughout California and Armenia, took place in 2009 and 2010 under the sponsorship of the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the National Endowment for the Arts. Next month’s activities have received support from WESTAF Tour West and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program.

Harutyunyan draws strength and inspiration from her ancestors in the province of Moush in historic (Western) Armenia, especially her grandmother, Mafo, who sang to her as a child. In addition to songs sung by her family, Harutyunyan learned many of the songs in her repertoire from elder women who had emigrated from Western to Eastern Armenia before or during the Armenian Genocide of 1914-1923, as well as from their descendants and old song collections.

Harutyunyan’s Shoghaken Ensemble has performed throughout Armenia, Georgia, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Europe and North America. In 2002, the Ensemble was honored to take part in Yo-Yo Ma‘s Silk Road Project. Their music can also be heard on the soundtrack of the film Ararat.

Harutyunyan’s first solo recording, Armenian Lullabies (Traditional Crossroads, 2004), was praised as “The best Armenian recording worldwide” (The New York Times).
Harutyunyan passes her cultural heritage on to the next generation as director of the Hayrik Mouradyan Children’s Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble. Of her lifelong commitment to the art of the Armenian lullaby, Harutyunyan writes: “Lullabies guide a person throughout their entire life. In the beginning, they are sung to you, later, you are the one who sings… in this way, the cosmic melody of love and affection continues forever.”

The investigative commission investigating the circumstances of the April war invited a conscript soldier who participated in the 2016 operations to a closed session, who provided the commission members with very important information.

The chairman of the commission said this in a briefing with journalists after the closed session of the commission Andranik Kocharyan:

“Today we received very important information from the invited person. It is about the situation on the front line. He was a person who increased our knowledge about the April events, a person who had direct participation in the front line,” said Kocharyan.

He did not give other details about the invited person, he only mentioned that he is one of the soldiers who created the hero painting of the front line. Kocharyan gave a positive answer to the question whether he was a conscript soldier during that time. According to Kocharyan, during the work, they studied what the realities were on the front line.

Referring to the persons already invited and to be invited to the closed sessions of the commission, he noted that they have an approved list of invitees, which has not decreased, on the contrary, it has increased. According to Kocharyan, high-ranking officials of that time were invited to the meetings of this commission, but he did not publish their names.

The commission worked actively in the summer as well, working with a large number of materials and people. Kocharyan assured that the commission is becoming more professional day by day. The chairman of the commission stated that they will do everything so that there are no shortcomings in the Ministry of Defense in the future.

At the same time, we managed to find out who was the person invited to the commission. We are talking about Hrant Sarkisov, a participant in the April four-day war.

In particular, he wrote about the commission on his Facebook page, noting that he participated in the session. “I was thinking whether to write or not, but I have to, I have to tell the truth to my comrades in arms.
guys,

Did you know that today I was invited to the RA NA “Temporary Committee to Investigate the April 2016 Incidents”…

I must thank each of the members of the committee, led by the chairman of the committee, Mr. Kocharyan.

What I believed before the work started was justified. Today’s meeting proved that the investigative commission is APOLITICAL, that we HAVE TO TRUST the investigative commissioner, none of the members mixed politics with the events of April.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, MPs,” he said in his post.

Serj Tankian Teams Up with Creative Armenia to Release 7 Notes Challenge

Grammy-Award winning and multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter, composer, poet and visual artist Serj Tankian has teamed up with non-profit cultural organization Creative Armenia to release 7 Notes Challenge, a compilation album highlighting some of the most notable submissions from a songwriting challenge posed to artists worldwide. The 17 song album from various artists is available now on all major streaming and download platforms across the globe.

The unique experiment was originally announced back in October of 2017 with a basic premise and a $5,000 prize.

“The challenge is simple. You’ve got these seven notes that you have to start with, ” explained Tankian. “Your first seven notes of your composition have to be these seven notes. You can make a jazz song, a rock song, a symphony…whatever type of music that you want, but it can’t be longer than 3 minutes. The rest is up to you.”

When the submission deadline was reached, Creative Armenia, who hosted the competition via the website serjtankianchallenge.com received over 2000 unique submissions in a plethora of genres from all corners of the world. Tankian and a panel of other notable judges (SOAD bandmate & bassist Shavo Odadjian, Sebu Simonian of Capital Cities, acclaimed jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan, Dean of Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA Judith Smith and honored composer Vahagn Hayrapetyan) were then tasked to listen through the overwhelming number of submissions to select a winner.

That they did, and in fact, they ended up crowning two winning submissions, whom split the $5,000 prize equally.

So many great compositions remained. In an effort to showcase some of the worthy songs, the idea of the 7 Notes Challenge compilation album was born, to bring awareness to a variety of artists taking a simple premise plus a few notes and turning them into a cornucopia of musical _expression_.

Tankian further explains, “All of the inspiration is out there for us to take. If you’re an artist, you paint it…if you’re a musician, you compose it. The skill comes from the presentation. That’s what we learn over the years, how to best present this. This music, this muse, so that it’s palpable, it’s original, it’s appreciated and emotive.”

Mexico’s Alpha Lighting System, with their prog-rocking instrumental jam “life.exe” and Armenian Mariam Petrosian with her soulful croon on “Here I Come” were voted by the judging panel as the respective winners of the $5,000 prize of the original challenge and are also present on the compilation album.

“I can say that 7 Notes Challenge wasn’t really a challenge to me but rather a very exciting and enjoyable process that sparked my muse back to me, for which I am very grateful to Serj Tankian and Creative Armenia,” explains Petrosian. ” I am very proud of Here I Come, as it feels like I’ve collaborated with Serj Tankian himself. Thank you Serj, for those beautiful, mysterious and truly cosmic 7 notes”.

These two very distinct tracks stylistically bookend the wide spectrum of wonderfully diverse, experimental and lush songs from the rest of the contributing talented musicians that make up the 7 Notes Challenge compilation.
