Armenian rapper Super Sako.

Armenian rapper Super Sako, who shot to fame for his 2016 hit song “Mi Gna”, enthralled the audiences with his power-packed performance on 31 March at Samrat Hotel, Delhi. The show that marked the rapper’s first ever performance in India was presented in association with Drama, an exclusive nightclub pop-up company in partnership with FFF and Stanley Communications.

As we caught up with him before the show, he told Guardian 20 how he would love to experience the culture and try different cuisines of India. He said, “India has always been on my list for places to visit. I love the culture, the music, and the dances. I am really thrilled to visit the country of love and a country full of people—all belonging to different cultures and backgrounds and yet are so loving and considerate for each other. I am really looking forward to experiencing all the well-known things here, especially the Indian cuisine.”

Luxury nightclub pop-ups are a fairly new concept in the country that are all about revolutionising the nightclub experience for the party lovers. On the novel concept, Super Sako said, “I like pop-ups. I think with today’s culture, pop-ups are something new and exciting. From pop-up shops by renowned designers to pop-up food places by food vendors, the pop-up culture is catching up everywhere. India is also growing at a really fast pace these days. Pop-ups are always interesting and fascinating in comparison to other clichéd concepts. The pop-up concept makes for a captivating experience.”

Having grown up with a passion for music and with a “musical family background”, the rapper had an early start to his music career. He told us, “As far as I can remember, I always had a love for music which helped me start my career on similar lines. When I decided to turn my passion into my career, great things started happening and I started doing my own songs. People even started liking those. I even come from a musical background, so that helped me in developing my career, too.”

Super Sako, whose early music influences have been 2pac, Spice1, DJ Quik, and Biggie, described his style of music as, “I am a rapper. That’s what my identity is and that’s what I want the world to recognise me as.”

The song “Mi Gna” that made waves internationally and got him global recognition in 2016 has been viewed more than 155 million times on YouTube. When we asked him if he expected that kind of reaction, he told us, “It has been an overwhelming response. This has been a milestone in my career. I am extremely grateful for the love I have received all over the world. The past month I have been on a world tour, exploring different cultures and it is amazing to see how the music that I made is on chartbusters everywhere.”

After the huge success of the track, Super Sako released the remix of his famous single “Mi Gna” in collaboration with Maître GIMS under the production of Sony Universal in January 2018. It clocked an incredible 38.8 million views in less than two months. The song became an unstoppable sensation in Europe, entering the French Singles Chart at #7, Belgian Ultratop Wallonia Chart at #38 and peaked at #8 on the Belgian Wallonia Urban Top 50 Chart. The song has won two platinums and is one of the most played soundtracks across the world.

The singer also talked about his love for all kinds of music. About his favourite genre of music, he said, “Being a musician, I love all kinds of music. It just basically depends on my mood, whichever music tune I would want to listen to at a particular time. I am even a really huge fan of Indian music and I am really impressed by how Indian musicians have also taken a step forward and are doing
really well.”

During the interaction, the rapper also opened up about his wish to collaborate with some Indian musicians in the future. His personal favourites are Hard Kaur, Arko Mukherjee, and Neha Bhasin. He said, “Indian musicians are getting famous and renowned all over the world these days and I am really happy to see them growing and getting recognition internationally.”

The rapper also shared with us that he is looking forward to “exploring the music industry in India” and is hopeful to “make this tour count”.
Super Sako is overwhelmed by the growth of R&B and hip-hop genres. On the current trends among music lovers, he said, “People are moving away from pre-recorded music to live music, concerts etc., which gives R&B and hip-hop a strong push. People are now ready to explore new artistes and new genres
of music.”

Excited about his future projects, Super Sako told us, “I am working on a lot of new music, with different bands. And I am looking forward to working with an Indian artiste because Indian artistes are full of hidden talents and I would love to explore a different genre of music with an amazing Indian artiste.”

Asbarez: Prelate’s Easter Message

Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian

May The Message Of The Resurrection Lead Us To Renewed Life

The glory of Easter is upon us once again, the most sacred, heartening, and joyful time of the year when our hearts and souls are enlivened by the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, His conquering of sin and of death, the inauguration of a new creation and the dawn of a new life. Easter, however, is not and must not be a fleeting celebration. The Resurrection of Christ is the crux of Christianity, and its powerful, life-saving, and life-giving message is for all the days of the year and indeed for all of eternity. To say that Jesus changed the world is not hyperbole; Jesus saved, renewed, reformed, and transformed lives, individually and collectively, and He continues to do so until the end of the age. Christ truly “makes all things new” (Revelation 21:5).

The Holy Bible is filled with stories of rebirth, of lives being reformed and transformed by the grace and mercy of our Lord. In the physical sense, Jesus healed and made whole individuals suffering from various illnesses; he restored sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, speech to the mute, cured paralytics and lepers, cast out demons, and more. Even more important than the physical is the minds, hearts, and souls He renewed. Jesus took simple and ordinary men like the apostles and the seventy-two disciples and endowed them with His power and authority, transforming them into bold and fearless witnesses, preachers, and spiritual leaders. There are many similar examples throughout the Bible, but perhaps the greatest transformation was that of Saul, once a persecutor of Christians, who upon seeing the Risen Christ experienced a total rebirth and became one of the most influential figures in the history of Christianity as St. Paul. In our own history we have the example of the pagan king Dertad who became the first Christian king of Armenia, proclaimed Christianity as the state religion, and died spreading the new faith.

Through His passion, death, and glorious Resurrection, our Lord Jesus Christ offered this same hope of a new and transformed life to all of mankind, “God is risen and all the universe has been adorned in a new garment” (Armenian Hymn). God’s love and Word have the power to transform lives, not just of those who lived in the time of Jesus, but our lives today, yours and mine. He, and only He, can change our innermost being, and through Him alone can we become who God has called us to be and enter into the fullness of a new and abundant life.

Dear faithful,
Easter is the most fitting time to commit ourselves to this new and abundant life in Christ, to reinforce our faith and cast off any and all negativity and darkness that threatens to sway us, our church, and our nation from the path that God has planned for us, for “…just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). God became man so that we could be more like Him, to have in Him new life, for “By His voluntary death He put death to death and by His incorrupt resurrection renewed the world” (Armenian Hymn). Let us accept this priceless gift and invite our Lord into our innermost beings with open arms and open hearts, allowing His grace, love, peace, and joy to renew, restore, and transform us into new creatures in His image.

With these thoughts and hopes, I extend my heartfelt well wishes to our extended Prelacy family, to the members of our clergy, councils, parishes, educational institutions, community organizations, and faithful, praying for the spirit of the Resurrection to inundate our souls with His love, peace, joy, and goodness, and guide us throughout the year to becoming who God intends for us to be. In this centennial year of the first Republic of Armenia in particular, let us renew our allegiance to our Lord, to our church, and to our nation, and serve with faith, brotherly love, and goodwill for His glory first and foremost, and for the splendor of our collective national life, in the spirit of our forefathers who gave their all for the resurrection of our nation in the aftermath of the Genocide.

Renewed in spirit, in faith, hope, and in love, let us put off our old selves and put on the new man, and in unison sing praises of joy and thanksgiving, for

CHRIST HAS RISEN FROM THE DEAD
BLESSED IS THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
A HAPPY EASTER FOR US ALL

Prayerfully,
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian

168: Artsakh’s people still suffer consequences of war: there are still landmines near settlements – presidential spox

Category
Artsakh

he people of Artsakh continue suffering the consequences of the war: after the war Artsakh’s territory was the first in the world with the quantity of landmines per square kilometer. After the war thanks to the demining operations it was possible to clean Artsakh’s territory from landmines by nearly 95%, but to neutralize the danger by 100% is almost impossible, Davit Babayan – spokesman of the President of Artsakh, told Armenpress commenting on the landmine explosion in Gazanchi area of Artsakh’s Martakert region as a result of which three de-miners of HALO Trust were killed and two more were injured.

“In general, we have losses from landmine explosion, and people are being killed, there are also wounded, but this is the consequence of the war as Artsakh’s territory has been extremely mined, perhaps it has been the first in the world with the quantity of landmines per square kilometer. Although there are some places where there are still landmines. And it’s almost impossible to neutralize them by 100%. Even the landmines remained from the World War II explode in different countries. Imagine how many years have passed. And this tragic incident happened, it’s really a tragedy, two people are wounded and fight for their lives. I think everything will be good: doctors do everything to save their lives”, Davit Babayan said.

Asked whether that 5% of Artsakh’s territory where there are still landmines is close to settlements or not, Davit Babayan stated: “There are landmines that are close to settlements, there are some in the fields since during the war these territories, especially Martakert region, the eastern parts of Askeran region, have repeatedly passed from hand in hand and were mined intensively, and the maps of these landmines have been lost or deliberately eliminated by Azerbaijanis. Therefore, it’s a very complicated work. We are grateful to the HALO Trust for managing together with the state to demine significant territories”.

The Artsakh Presidential spokesman noted that the consequences of the war are obvious. He said the consequences of war can remain for years and decades.

HALO Trust has confirmed that three of its staff were killed and two injured, by the accidental detonation of an anti-tank landmine in the Gazanchi area in Martakert, Artsakh in the morning of March 29. The staff members were in a vehicle conducting survey duties at the time. The injured have been taken to hospital and HALO is contacting the families of those killed.

Aram Mkrtchyan, one of the two HALO Trust de-miners who were wounded in the accidental detonation of an anti-tank landmine in Ghazanchi area of Artsakh, is in a serious but stable condition. The 44 year old survivor of the blast had internal bleeding and sustained a ruptured spleen, which was surgically removed in the Republican Medical Center of Artsakh.

The healthcare ministry of Artsakh told ARMENPRESS that the other survivor, Garik Ghahriyan, 31, is in a critical condition. Doctors were forced to amputate the lower limbs of the de-miner. Additional examinations revealed multiple fractions throughout his body.

The incident happened in the morning of March 29, when the vehicle of HALO Trust exploded on a landmine in Artsakh.

Three HALO Trust staff members were killed in what the organization called an “accidental detonation”. The victims have been identified as Pavel Akopov, Samson Avanessian and Marat Petrossian.

James Cowan, HALO’s CEO said: “Every day around the world, more than 8,000 HALO staff go to work in places where no one else can tread and this tragic incident throws into stark relief the dangers that they face and the importance of our work. Our colleagues were killed while working to make the land safe for the people of Nagorno Karabakh.”

RFE/RL Armenian Report – 03/30/2018

Ruling Party To Ignore Anti-Sarkisian Protests
        • Tatevik Lazarian
Armenia - Civic activists demonstrate in Yerevan against President Serzh
Sarkisian's perceived plans to extend his rule, 24 March 2018.
The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) has said that street
demonstrations planned by opposition groups cannot deter it from helping
President Serzh Sarkisian stay in power after his final presidential term ends
on April 9.
Opposition leader Nikol Pashinian confirmed on Thursday his Civil Contract
party will hold rallies in Yerevan in an attempt to prevent Armenia’s
HHK-controlled parliament from electing Sarkisian prime minister later in
April. Pashinian did not rule out non-violent actions aimed at disrupting
sessions of the National Assembly. His party is due to present a more detailed
plan of actions on Saturday.
Commenting on Pashinian’s plans, HHK spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov said late on
Thursday: “Nobody has the right to … impede our constitutional right to freely
perform our duty to vote [for prime minister] in the parliament.”
“If the [opposition] Yelk alliance had a majority [in the parliament] and
someone tried to limit its voting rights or its right to decide who must be
prime minister, how would they react? Our people voted for us [in the April
2017 elections] and we … will execute their political order,” Sharmazanov told
reporters.
Yelk is the country’s third largest parliamentary force that consists of Civil
Contract and two other opposition parties. The latter have refused to join
Pashinian’s campaign, saying that it is unlikely to attract large crowds.
Sarkisian has not yet officially confirmed his plans to become prime minister
in time for Armenia’s transition to a parliamentary system of government. But
some of his political allies have described this as a forgone conclusion.
Sarkisian stated in 2014 that he “will not aspire” to the post of prime
minister if Armenia is transformed into a parliamentary republic. His political
opponents now accuse him of reneging on that pledge.
Also planning anti-Sarkisian street protests is a coalition of smaller and more
radical opposition groups called For the Armenian State. Pashinian has been
reluctant to join forces with it so far, saying that it must speak out against
violent methods of political struggle.
EU Visa Service Provider Investigated By Armenian Government
        • Anush Muradian
Luxembourg -- A street sign marks the beginning of the village of Schengen,
January 27, 2016
An Armenian government agency has launched an inquiry into a Turkish-owned
company controversially chosen to process visa applications from Armenians
planning to travel to Germany and five other European Union member states.
The EU visa applications for Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria
and Luxembourg have until now been handled by the German Embassy in Yerevan.
The embassy announced earlier this week that starting next month it will it
outsource its consular services to Visametric, a private Turkish-Russian agency
whose parent company is based in Turkey.
The announcement raised fears in Armenia that the Turkish state will gain
access to sensitive personal data of many Armenian nationals. The latter are
required to disclose their incomes, bank details and other personal information
in their applications for so-called Schengen visas valid in virtually all EU
member states.
Armen Ashotian, the chairman of the Armenian parliament committee on foreign
relations, echoed “the concerns of many of our citizens” regarding “the Turkish
entity” on Thursday. In a Facebook post, Ashotian said he has appealed to the
government on behalf of the committee to look into the matter.
The Agency for Personal Data Protection, which is part of Armenia’s Justice
Ministry, said on Friday that it is now investigating the visa service provider
to “prevent possible violations” of Armenian law. A short statement by the
agency gave no further details.
The German ambassador to Armenia, Matthias Kiesler, sought to allay these fears
when he announced the new visa application procedure at a news conference on
Wednesday. “Protection of personal data is of utmost importance to us and we
can guarantee that no such data will be accessible to external users,” he said.
Turkey refuses to establish diplomatic relations with Armenia and fully
supports Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
European Firms To Build Large Solar Plant In Armenia
        • Emil Danielyan
Armenia - A newly constructed solar power plant in Talin, 7Nov2017.
A consortium of Dutch and Spanish companies has won an international tender for
the construction of Armenia’s first large solar power plant which is expected
to cost around $50 million.
The 55-megawatt plant will be built in Mets Masrik, a village close to the
eastern coast of Lake Sevan, as part of the Armenian government’s efforts to
reduce the domestic energy sector’s dependence on natural gas mostly imported
from Russia.
The World Bank pledged in 2015 to finance most of the landmark project in the
form of a grant allocated to the government. The resulting tender attracted
bids from two dozen energy companies from around the world. Ten of them were
shortlisted for the final stage of the contest.
The Armenian Energy Ministry announced on Friday that the consortium consisting
of the Dutch-based company Fotowatio Renewable Ventures and Spain’s FSL Solar
won the bidding because of promising the lowest cost of electricity to be
generated at the solar plant. It will be cheaper than power supplied by scores
of small hydroelectric plants scattered around the mountainous country, the
ministry said in a statement.
Work on the Mets Masrik plant may start already this year, in which case it
will be completed by the end of 2020. The new facility will be far more
powerful than three small solar plants that were built in Armenia late last
year.
The ministry said that it has also chosen locations for five other large or
medium-sized solar plants which could be constructed in the coming years. They
would increase Armenia’s combined solar capacity to at least 120 megawatts.
Solar energy can eventually gain a major share in Armenian electricity
production, added the ministry statement.
Armenia - A newly built solar power plant in Tsaghkadzor, 29Sep2017.
Earlier this year, the Armenian government reaffirmed its pledges to
significantly increase the share of hydropower and other renewables in domestic
electricity production. Energy Minister Ashot Manukian said the government
objective is to ensure that renewable sources meet at least half of Armenia’s
energy needs within the next few years.
According to the National Statistical Service (NSS), hydroelectric plants
accounted for about 30 percent of electricity generated in the country last
year. By comparison, thermal power plants using gas had a 37 percent share in
the total. Virtually all of the remaining 33.7 percent of energy was generated
by the Metsamor nuclear power station, NSS data shows.
Manukian cited the upcoming construction of a 76-megawatt hydroelectric plant
on the Debed river flowing through the northern Lori province. The $150 million
project is led by Samvel Karapetian, a Russian-Armenian billionaire businessman.
Another Spanish company specializing in renewables, ACCIONA Energy, is
currently exploring the possibility of building large wind farms in Armenia
that could have a combined capacity of at least 100 megawatts. Prime Minister
Karen Karapetian met with top ACCIONA executives in Davos, Switzerland in
January.
Press Review
“Zhoghovurd” is scathing about the Armenian government’s decision to allocate
an apartment to President Serzh Sarkisian and his family in view of the
upcoming end of his second term in office. The paper notes that the former
Armenian presidents, Levon Ter-Petrosian and Robert Kocharian, also received
free housing from the state after their tenure. But in the case of Sarkisian,
it says, one important difference is that he has been given a property that has
long been part of a residential complex in Yerevan reserved for the most
high-ranking state officials. “They allocated the house where Sarkisian lives
now,” it says. The paper believes that the main purpose of the government
decision is to make sure that Sarkisian does not have to move to another
residence before becoming prime minister on April 17.
“Haykakan Zhamanak” also finds the decision “noteworthy.” The paper says
Sarkisian “added a clear subtext” to it, which can be summed up as follows: “As
long as I am alive Armenia will have no other leaders.”
“Zhamanak” says it is already clear that the prolongation of Sarkisian’s
10-year rule will be accompanied by anti-government protests in Yerevan. “The
circle of their organizers is fairly large,” writes the paper. “It is not
clear, though, whether they will join forces.”
“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” says the current political situation in Armenia is
“ideal” for Sarkisian. “Tens of thousands of people follow political
developments through the Internet and discuss among themselves the question of
whether or not a handful of wretched oppositionists will manage to gather
several thousand people in Liberty Square,” writes the paper.
“Aravot” says that both the West and Russia are to blame for rising tensions
between them. “Russia is an authoritarian, extremely corrupt and
technologically and economically backward country,” editorializes the paper.
“But these flaws will not be fixed with the [Western] sanctions and expulsions
of [Russian] diplomats. Fortunately, the West is not urging Armenia to say ‘the
Russians are so terrible that they poisoned Skripal,’ while the Russians are
not forcing us to say ‘the West is so bad that it started a diplomatic war for
no reason.’ What is more, they by and large agree on Armenia and cooperate
within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. Hopefully, this will continue.”
