Sports: Mkhitaryan offered to Manchester City

Daily Cannon
April 7 2018

Mkhitaryan came to Arsenal in exchange for Alexis Sanchez and has spoken about his delight at moving to London.

“Two months ago he (Raiola) offered me (Henrikh) Mkhitaryan and Pogba to play with us,” Guardiola told the press ahead of the Manchester derby which could see City lift the title against Jose Mourinho. “He was interested in Mkhitaryan and Pogba to play with us. Pogba is an incredible player. A top, top player.”

Raiola responded, telling the BBC, “I never spoke to Pep Guardiola.

“I would not speak to him about players; I would speak to Manchester City.”

Whether or not Pep is merely playing mind games with United ahead of the crunch tie on Saturday evening, it’s hard to tell.

Mhitaryan could well have been offered to City before a deal was done to bring him to Arsenal. The player was clearly not happy at United under Mourinho, who bought him and then never seemed to want to use him properly.

The Armenian seems happy enough with where he has ended up. He recently told FourFourTwo, “When I heard I could swap Man United for Arsenal, I said, ‘Yes, I want to do that’, I didn’t think twice. It’s important for me to play in an offensive team.

“I couldn’t have imagined a better start. I’d missed playing offensively. I joined Arsenal because Wenger wanted me, not because he wanted to replace Sanchez. We are different players and characters, with different abilities and skills, so I’ll try my best to do everything for the club.”

Since moving to Arsenal, Mkhitayran has recaptured some of the form that saw him catch the attention of the world while at Borussia Dortmund. In 63 games with United, Mkhitaryan managed 13 goals and 11 assists. He already has two goals and six assists in just 12 matches for Arsene Wenger.

The midfielder is facing an anxious wait to find out how bad his knee injury is. Hit by a hard tackle against CSKA Moscow, Arsene Wenger confirmed that the player has some sort of ligament damage and the club are just waiting to find out how bad it is and how long he will be out for.

Sports: Pep Guardiola claims he was offered to sign Henrikh Mkhitarayan

April 7 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has sensationally claimed that only a few weeks ago he was offered the chance to sign French midfielder Paul Pogba and Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitarayan from Manchester United by their powerful agent Mino Raiola, The Telegraph reports.

The Manchester City manager sarcastically added that he was shocked that Raiola, given the bitter feud between the pair, wanted to move two of his star clients to play for a “dog”. “I’m surprised because I am a dog,” Guardiola said in reference to the agent’s derogatory description of him.

Guardiola’s revelations, on the eve of the Manchester derby, a highly-charged derby in which City can win the Premier League title, are extraordinary and will also re-open his sulphurous dispute with United manager Jose Mourinho.

Suggesting that Pogba, and with Mkhitaryan sold to Arsenal in January, wants out of United will infuriate Mourinho who has been dealing with constant questions over the £89 million record signing’s performances, state of mind and, above all, his relationship with him.

Guardiola made his amazing claim after being asked whether the United manager, given the fierce history between the two, was still his “big rival”. “I have many (rivals)… especially agents,” Guardiola responded. “I have a lot. I am a big boss. I’ll give you a huge list of my big rivalries, believe me.”

Mkhitaryan left United in the January window as part of the deal that took Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford.

Eager to make an early impression at the Emirates Stadium, the 29-year-old assisted three goals on his home debut against Everton as Arsene Wenger’s men obliterated the Toffees 5-1.

Sports: Mkhitaryan will miss rest of season due to knee injury

Midfielder of the Armenian national football team and Arsenal Henrikh Mkhitaryan will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury he received during Europa League quarter-finals match against CSKA Moscow on April 5, Mirror reported.

Arsenal will send the Armenia international for a further scan but it could put a question mark over whether he will play again this season if it is bad news.

Mkhitaryan could be out for up to six weeks depending on the scale of the damage and that a major blow for Arsenal’s run-in and Europa League campaign.

Earlier, Arsene Wenger hoped the Armenian would miss only the match against Southampton. “The scans show rehabilitation period will reach 6 weeks”, the source writes.

Arsenal-CSKA Moscow match ended 4-1. Mkhitaryan was substituted in the 61st minute as a result of the injury.

5 local favorites in the Armenian capital: iNews

PanArmenian, Armenia
April 7 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – It’s curious how little exposure there is for Yerevan, capital of Armenia. This former Soviet city is older than Rome and is full of ancient and modern culture interacting in interesting ways, author Dimitris Hall says in a feature published on iNews, revealing five local favorites in the Armenian capital.

Armenia’s best brandy and wine

Ararat is one of Armenia’s best-known brandy makers, but is by no means the only one, nor the most noteworthy. In fact, the Noy Wine Factory is built on the foundations of a 16th-century fortress, the walls of which are accessible from the cellar. If that’s not enough to warrant a visit, Noy’s brandy and wine are some of the best in the country, at least according to local Sofia.

Cold comfort in a leafy location

Lovers’ Park is right in the city centre, a quiet oasis close to all the important government buildings and sights, such as the Government Palace and the National Assembly, and is surrounded by fountains, plants, flowers and statues.

Radio Yerevan memorial

One of Yerevan’s most important claims to fame is the jokes connected to Radio Yerevan and its public radio company from the days of the USSR. The popularity of these jokes across the Iron Curtain during the Cold War brought the East and West closer together, and they can still be heard in some countries to this day. A Singing Sculpture was created to commemorate Radio Yerevan’s 90th anniversary as well as the 60th anniversary since the first public TV broadcast. It has a hidden radio receiver always tuned to the Public Radio of Armenia.

The genius of Eduard Khazaryan

The man known as the “Armenian da Vinci” was the creator (and player) of the world’s smallest violin. Eduard Kazaryan passed away in 2012 and was a polymath sculptor that worked to extraordinarily microscopic levels, often creating works of art smaller than a grain of sugar or containing elements hundreds of times thinner than a human hair. His work was exhibited in the US, where it was dubbed an “8th wonder of the world”.

A mysterious lake

Yerevanian Lake, an artificial reservoir in the outskirts of the city, hides secrets in its depths. In 1968, Paleolithic obsidian tools were discovered in a flooded cave on its shores, now belonging to the US Embassy in Armenia and currently out of bounds. Only 8 years later, in 1976, a trolleybus fell into the reservoir carrying 96 passengers, most of which did not survive. Amazingly, world record-breaking fin-swimming champion Shavarsh Karapetyan was jogging along the lake at the time and made history by heroically diving in and managing to save 20 of the trapped passengers from a depth of 10 metres. His sports career was ruined, and the tragedy, too negative for the USSR’s image at the time, was censored within the country, but that only made this lake’s reputation greater.

Newspaper: Is the shadow of US sanctions falling on Armenia? Newspaper: Is the shadow of US sanctions falling on Armenia?

The United States of America has included in the list of sanctions around three dozen Russian oligarchs and officials who are considered close associates of Putin, Zhamanak newspaper writes on Saturday.

“They, in fact, are contenders for sanctions, included in the so-called Kremlin list, consisting of 200 people. The list also includes Armenians, among them billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, the only one of the three Armenians, who is directly involved in the events in Armenia and who in is also an actor in Armenia.

Of course, the US will unlikely apply sanctions against Karapetyan, but beyond all doubt, the process itself will affect him as much as it impacts the Russian elite and the economic situation.

On the other hand, several months ago, Samvel Karapetyan presented his investment plans in Armenia in the energy sector in the presence of the US Ambassador. These plans include cooperation with a well-known American company, which will become an example of large US investments in Armenia.

The economic importance of this cooperation is not so important for Samvel Karapetyan, as a political component, since it is obvious that Karapetyan is trying to create a platform for dialogue with the American side in Armenia to neutralize risks in Russia.

In this context, it is interesting to what extent this affected the elections of the Prime Minister in April, as well as the role and ambitions connected with Karen Karapetyan, since he had obvious ambitions with Karen Karapetyan’s premiership a year ago, and during the election campaign announced the creation Investors’ Club in Armenia.

It is noteworthy that on the day when the Karapetyans in Armenia announced the Investors’ Club, in Artsakh Serzh Sargsyan made a counter-statements saying he would always be there where he will be in demand for solving security problems. Afterwards, Serzh Sargsyan also participated in the presentation of a $1-billion investment program of Samvel Karapetyan, and the US ambassador was also present, but not Karen Karapetyan.

Samvel Karapetyan, of course, was included in the list of candidates for US sanctions after the events described above, but it is possible that this is aimed at controlling his activities in Armenia in order to rule out any deviation from the reached agreements, otherwise the sanctions of the Kremlin list will also be applied against him.

This is one of the scenario of further developments when it will become possible to stop the immediate engagement of a big business in politics. First it was done in February 2015, with the involvement of Samvel Karapetyan,” Zhamanak writes.

Pasadena School Board Recommits Itself to Armenian Genocide Education

From STAFF REPORTS

The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education unanimously voted to pass a resolution ensuring the Armenian Genocide is taught to its faculty, student body, and the community.

April will also now be known as “Pasadena Unified School District’s Month of Commemoration for the Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.”

The important March 29 resolution also recommits board members involvement with teachers in discussions about ways to educate about genocide and also the most effective ways of communicating societial themes that run through the continuum of genocides of modern history.

The resolution was jointly introduced by Armenian Student Club Chairs Aram Chalikyan of Marshall Fundamental School, and Hamlet Nortikyan of Pasadena High school.

Alison Ghafari, a representative of the Armenian Council of America, commended PUSD for recognizing the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide and recommitting to teaching the history to its faculty and student body.

“The one topic that I do not recall covering in depth was the Armenian Genocide in my Honors World History class,” Ghafari said. “In a chapter of my textbook, the Armenian Genocide was vaguely summarized into one, small paragraph. My teacher at the time was also vague on the subject and showed us a short video clip of an Armenian grandma weeping and giving her testimony on the event and what she had to endure. The video could have resonated with the students within the class, but it did not. There was no discussion after that, no information further given to educate the students. No one understood its importance….I believe that it is important to learn and discuss what has happened in our history to prevent it from repeating itself. Failure to recognize the Armenian Genocide has led to many other ethnic cleansings. That is why it is important to educate our youth on the Armenian Genocide and any other crime against humanity that our education system has forgotten.”

The Armenian Council of America promotes the civic and civil rights interests of the Armenian American community. It hopes to achieve these goals through education, community organization, leadership development, and coalition-building with diverse communities.
