Russian expert: Russia as a strategic ally should give Armenia clear guarantees of its security

Yerevan July 17

Marianna Mkrtchyan. The practical aspect of the Armenian-Russian relations needs to be strengthened, Russian expert in the field of politics, defense and security Grigory Trofimchuk expressed this opinion during the round table “Youth and Humanitarian Dimension of the EEU Space” held on July 17 in Yerevan.

According to him, the Armenian-Russian relations have a solid foundation, reflected in a number of blocks, including the CSTO, the EEU. “The potential for further cooperation is solid, but it is necessary to strengthen the practical aspect so that every citizen of Armenia feels all the positive results that the official Yerevan enjoys due to its membership the Eurasian Economic Union,” the Russian expert said. At the same time, he added that this should be expressed, including in the form of lower prices for essential goods. Trofimchuk also expressed his conviction that it is necessary to eliminate all the elements of mistrust existing in Armenia and Armenian society in relation to Russia, a strategic ally. In addition, he believes that at the expert level, the interests of Armenia should be defended more actively. “Moreover, the Armenian society should receive clear answers to the raised questions so that there will not be disintegration activities. An important element of our relations is ensuring stability in the South Caucasus,” the expert said, and in this context recalled the escalation of the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone in April 2016, which was stopped due to the efforts of Russia. However, Trofimchuk expressed his conviction that the frozen situation can not last forever, and the more the situation remains unresolved, the more it carries threats, including for the Armenian-Russian relations.

The Russian expert believes that Russia, as a strategic ally, should give Armenia clear guarantees of security. “All kinds of statements, especially from the Russian side, such as ‘ Armenians have occupied the Russian media’ are not acceptable. In addition, we do not need experts who during the visit to Azerbaijan make one statement, while during the visit to Armenia state the opposite, such practice harms security. There should be experts who express a clear position that fits into the triangle of Armenia-Russia- Azerbaijan relations, “he said.

Trofimchuk also pointed at the concealment of the fact that the EEU is not the USSR, which creates grounds for anti-propaganda.

Armen Sarkissian: Armenia can become a door to a huge Eurasian space, where more than 170 million people live

Armen Sarkissian: Armenia can become a door to a huge Eurasian space, where more than 170 million people live

Yerevan July 17

Marianna Mkrtchyan. Armenia can become bridge, or even maybe, a door into a huge Eurasian area, where more than 170 million people live, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated in an interview with RIA Novosti, answering the question whether it was possible to reach any agreements on attracting investments to the country.

Sarkissian recalled that the role of the president in the parliamentary republic does not envisage any levers of executive power for the head of state. According to him, it was obvious right from the beginning that if he took this post, he would have to use his ties in science and politics to attract investors to Armenia. At the same time, the head of the state noted that now the overall atmosphere in Armenia is positive – changes that have occurred in the republic after the “velvet revolution” are perceived by many people very positively.

“The great expectations of changes are for the better, and it’s important that they turn into real results – in the economy and in business.” My vision is as follows: we have a huge advantage today, because we are a member of the EEU, and when I say invest in Armenia, this does not mean that I am inviting to invest in a country with a population of 3.5 million people. Armenia can become a bridge, or even maybe a door to the huge Eurasian space where more than 170 million people live .Nowadays, when new technologies and developments are significant rather than natural resources, Armenia can make a bet on it. Currently, technologies are developing quite efficiently in Armenia and many world companies in this field are already working with us, and Armenia can become a technological bridge between the conditional East and the West, create its own new technologies that will have an international quality, and distribute them in the Eurasian space, “the Armenian President believes.

Sarkissian recalled that he was recently in France, and managed to meet with many French companies, for example, Dassault Systemes, Orange, THALES. “There were meetings not only with high-tech companies, I met with the owner of Chanel. In Armenia, the traditions of jewelry business are strong, it would be nice to combine our traditions and world technologies,” he concluded.

Iranian Christians close ranks at St. Thaddeus pilgrimage

Iranian Christians close ranks at St. Thaddeus pilgrimage

Every year thousands assemble to commemorate the martyrdom of the apostle who is reputed to have evangelized western Azerbaidjan

As soon as she passes the control barrier, Narineh, 31, a secretary from Teheran, quickly takes off her long jacket and the Islamic veil that covers her blond-tinted hair.

She and her husband have driven for 24 hours to reach the twin black and white domes of the Armenian Church of St. Thaddeus, which stands on an isolated plain near Maku, not far from the border with Turkey and Armenia.

Every year thousands of Iranian Christians assemble at Qara Kelisa (the black church) to commemorate the martyrdom of the apostle Thaddeus, who is reputed to have evangelized this region of western Azerbaidjan.

The pilgrimage, which may soon be listed as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage, offers an opportunity to keep their faith alive as many people continue to emigrate.

Hundreds of multicolored tents and windbreakers line the length of the ancient monastery and the neighboring hill. Perfume from the incense rising from the church mixes with the smoke of many barbecues.

Families have set up their camp stoves and coolers under the leaden sky. Most will spend the afternoon at table. Here and there, Assyrian pop music blares from a radio.

Why have they all come so far for what looks more like a camping trip than a pilgrimage?

Unique pilgrimage in the Islamic Republic of Iran

“Some have come mostly for enjoyment and to meet friends,” Narineh, an Armenian Christian said. “Personally, I was not much of a believer at first.”

“But seven years ago, I received an answer to my prayers at the tomb of St. Thaddeus and that has made my faith much more alive,” she said.

“Since then, my husband and I come nearly every year,” she said, as she replaces her veil in preparation for evening prayer in the church led by the bishop.

Since the 1950s, several thousand Iranian Christians have gathered here in mid-July each year for the three day pilgrimage, which is the only one of its kind in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Th event, which is organized by the Armenian Apostolic Church, the largest Christian church in Iran with 60,000 members, commemorates the martyrdom of the Apostle Jude or Thaddeus, who is believed to have evangelized these regions and is regarded as one of the church’s founders.

Thaddeus’ tomb is also located here, according to an ancient inscription at the foot of the eastern facade of the church.

Ten years ago, UNESCO added Qara Kelisa and two other churches in the region to its World Heritage list. The pilgrimage may also soon join them on the UNESCO list of intangible, cultural heritage.

“In two months, we will lodge the proposal with UNESCO,” said Sherly Avedian, who coordinates the pilgrimage and is a leader of the Iranian association for historic churches, which is also sponsored by the government heritage body.

“The government provides financial and material support to keep the place going and to attract tourists,” she said.

A photo of the Ayatollah Khomeiny is on display above the church door alongside another of the Armenian Patriarch in recognition of the fact that the festival originally took place under the auspices of the former.

Meanwhile, government agents mix with the crowd and make sure that no Muslims join the celebrations for fear of conversions.

Important to feel united as Iranian Christians

Zaya and Rosy, who are Assyrians from Ourmia, which is three hours away by car, have come to spend the day with their friends and cousins.

“It’s important to feel the unity between us as Iranian Christians,” said Zaya, 42, who works in a fruit juice factory. “We don’t have enough electricity or supplies but under a tent we are all equal.”

He and his wife have no children. Many couples who come here would like to have one. Indeed, that very morning the bishop celebrated the baptisms of two children whose births are attributed to the intercession of St. Thaddeus.

After divine liturgy on the final day, the faithful will also sacrifice sheep, an antique practice that has continued in some areas.

Looked on by some as a folk festival and as a pilgrimage by others, the gathering has taken on greater significance as an increasing number of people have started to migrate. Now there are only 2,000 participants whereas there were up to 6,000 in the past.

Vartan, 30, an Armenian Christian from Tabriz with a crucifix tattooed on his forearm, has never missed a pilgrimage since he was nine but he hopes this will be his last.

He is now thinking of joining his cousins in the United States, where he hopes to find “more opportunities for the future as a DJ and more choice in getting married.”

“Unfortunately, Trump has closed the gates,” he laments, hoping to rediscover his “energy” during the pilgrimage.

“We are not newcomers but natives, particularly in these regions where Christians have lived for 2,000 years,” said Armenian Archbishop Grigor Chifchian of Tabriz. “We certainly have a place of our own in Iran.”

Tea Party Express Endorses Danny Tarkanian for U.S. Congress in Nevada

 SACRAMENTO, California

Tea Party Express, the nation’s largest Tea Party political action committee, is pleased to announce its endorsement of Danny Tarkanian for Congress in Nevada’s Third Congressional District.

Tea Party Express Co-Founder and Chief Strategist Sal Russo said, “The road to retaining our conservative majority in the House runs right through Nevada. We are fortunate to have a candidate like Danny Tarkanian whose Tea Party values and involvement in the community make him the ideal choice to represent Southern Nevadans in Congress. We are proud to stand with President Trump and Tea Party Senator Rand Paul in endorsing Danny for his commitment to defending liberty and putting America first.

“The grandson of working class Armenian immigrants, Danny is the embodiment of the American Dream. A graduate of UNLV and the University of San Diego School of Law, he started his own law firm and later opened a commercial real estate company. Every step of the way, Danny experienced firsthand the regulatory and tax burdens government places on entrepreneurs and job creators. In addition to his success in business, Danny is deeply committed to his community, having founded a non-profit youth basketball organization that has taught thousands of Nevada youths important life lessons in leadership and sportsmanship.

“Under the leadership of President Trump and our conservative Congress, America is finally recovering from the disastrous Obama years. Thanks to conservative policies like the Trump tax cuts and the slashing of job-killing regulations, the economy is booming again and unemployment is rapidly declining. We can either continue growing the economy and making progress toward reducing the size, cost, and intrusiveness of the federal government by electing committed conservatives like Danny Tarkanian, or we can allow leftists like Nancy Pelosi and Susie Lee to take control and push failed policies that destroy jobs, hurt working families, and saddle future generations with massive debt to support their socialist big government vision for America,” Russo concluded.

ARKA, Armenia

YEREVAN, July 17. /ARKA/. A set of new technologies, the way they are used and their possibilities were showcased as part of a project called ‘Hello from the Future,’ initiated by the students of the Ayb School in Yerevan and implemented in concert with GNC-Alfa telecommunications company (trading as Rostelecom in Armenia).
Rostelecom in Armenia said in a news release that the final event took place in a park, located near the downtown Republic Square, and was open to all.

The purpose of the event was to show the children and adults how artificial intelligence can be used in art through exhibitions, video materials and other informative materials.

The site was divided into several pavilions, each presenting an aspect of the use of artificial intelligence.

In particular, one of the pavilions showed the process of using artificial intelligence for creating real pictures by the students.

The other pavilion showed souvenirs created by the robots, designed by the schoolchildren. Another pavilion hosted a quiz, conducted live on the event’s Facebook page.
Those who were interested to take part in the contest, were asked to send a photograph of the landscape opening from their window in advance. Five photos at the choice of the organizers were processed by using artificial intelligence.

Winners were awarded prizes. The importance of the project is that the technological future of the people and future technologies are the most discussed and promising topics of the time. According to some opinions, the development of technologies and the reduction of the human factor threaten the existence of certain specialties.
On the other hand, history shows that scientific and technological progress contribute to the development of mankind and the more effective use of life resources, freeing up more time for creativity.

At the opening of the event, the crowd was welcomed by Vasily Rusakov, the new commercial director of Rostelecom in Armenia and Silvia Yakubian-Nadjaryan, the deputy head of the Ayb School.

“Rostelecom underscores all the projects that inform the society and introduce the latest technologies, enabling to see them in practice. It is gratifying that the Ayb School in Armenia not only teach these technologies, but also give children the opportunity to use this knowledge, to understand the mechanism of work and to share their personal experiences with peers and society, “said Rusakov.

“Artificial intelligence has entered our life. It is our future, and we cannot ignore the fact that it is necessary to find new ways to identify the greatest benefits and new uses. Ayb’s students study programming and robot designing from the elementary classes. When in high school, they can implement large-scale projects, the results of one we see today, as part of the “Hello from the Future” project. I am happy and proud that our students and their mentors were able to implement the project. In addition, I would like to thank Rostelecom for helping the children, for supporting them and sponsoring this project. Without you, without our patrons and supporters, this project would have been impossible,” Yakubian-Nadzharyan said.

The project started in May, when together with Rostelecom, a joint roundtable was organized at the Ayb School, along with an exhibition of images processed by using artificial intelligence.

As one of the leaders of IT sector, Rostelecom joined the project “Hello from the Future”, initiated by the Ayb School, emphasizing the importance of implementing similar activities to inform the public about global technology developments and the introduction of technological thinking especially among young people.

Simultaneously with the exhibition, the head of the Tehnosharzh club of the Ayb school Vazgen Hakobjanyan, who is a lecturer at the American University of Armenia, and also the co-founder of the data research department Artur Khalatyan, the founder and director of HiLearn, a lecturer at the AUA Arsen Mamikonyan, another lecturer at the AUA, director of the Datamotus company Habet Madoyan presented their visions of the prospects for technology development and discussed the role of mankind in this process, the participation opportunities, as well as the emergence of new specialties in the future.

The company’s fiber-optic network covers 80% of the territory of Armenia, extending to more about 3000 km.

The network is connected to the main regional backbones and major traffic exchange sites, as well as international channels via Georgia and Iran. -0—-

Pashinyan and NATO

Vestnik Kavkaza
17 Jul in 17:14 By Vestnik Kavkaza

Last week, the new Armenian people’s prime minister visited Brussels for acquaintance, and it was not some ordinary event, but the NATO summit, where he talked about democracy a lot. Opponents immediately noticed that by doing such statements, Pashinyan pursues the goal of legitimizing his accession to power through a coup d’état, and if the head of the Cabinet wants to prove his commitment to democracy and human rights, then Armenia must observe international obligations, withdraw its troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, and not to hamper the return of Azerbaijani internally displaced persons subjected to ethnic cleansing to native lands.

Having received an invitation to the summit of the alliance, Pashinyan promised to think it over and attend it only if he is satisfied with the draft final resolution of the summit. The resolution was adopted following the summit, in which the alliance expressed support for the territorial integrity of the South Caucasus countries, and hence Azerbaijan, the territorial integrity of which was violated by Armenia. Nevertheless, Pashinyan was not embarrassed by this fact, as well as by the fact that Armenia, as a CSTO member (unlike Georgia and Azerbaijan), looked a bit strange when attended the North Atlantic Alliance summit. Armenia is NATO partner country and participates in its two programs – in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Yerevan signed an individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO in 2005.

One way or another, using the opportunity, Pashinyan met in Brussels with the Prime Ministers of Greece, Belgium, Macedonia, Spain and Italy, Chancellor of Germany, Presidents of France, Lithuania, Canada, Ukraine, Slovakia and Afghanistan and also with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in turn, confirmed his participation in the 17th Francophonie Summit in Yerevan and noted that he visited Armenia in 1988 with his father, who was prime minister back then. Emmanuel Macron, Petro Poroshenko and Alexis Tsipras invited Pashinyan to France, Ukraine and Greece, respectively.

Pashinyan’s speech at the main for him summit’s event – dedicated to Afghanistan – sounded somewhat cynical. He spoke about the importance of international security issues and the need to preserve a collective approach to this issue, noted that all those present in Brussels are united by strong faith and readiness to bring peace, security and stability. These words made us think that if the leadership of Armenia adhered to such principles not only with regard to Afghanistan, but also with respect to their own region, everyone would be much more grateful to them.

Pashinyan admitted that the topic of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is incompatible with the format of the Afghan discussion, since NATO does not play any role in the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, but nevertheless he “took a shot” at Azerbaijan, accusing it of “violating ceasefire and provocations,”as well as doubted Baku’s commitment to the peace process.

At meetings with EU leaders – Donald Tusk, Jean-Claude Juncker and Federica Mogherini – Pashinyan argued that Armenia is loyal to the negotiation process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. Pashinyan also spoke to the experts of the Carnegie Europe research center. Talking about his successes, he noted that “there is no geopolitical context in the revolution, and the new government does not plan any major foreign policy changes or fundamental swings.”

Commenting on Pashinyan’s statements in Brussels, Baku noted that instead of taking constructive steps towards a negotiated settlement of the conflict, try to escalate the situation by setting conditions for negotiations, illegally visiting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, deploying additional troops in the occupied lands, and taking other adventurous steps.

It did not take long to see the confirmation of these words – on the morning of June 16 Pashinyan visited occupied Karabakh, where, according to the press service of the prime minister, “new technologies for designing and strengthening infrastructures and reliable protection” were presented to him. Pashinyan also visited the unrecognized NKR immediately after being elected the prime minster. Then he said that he sees NKR as a party to the conflict, which, according to Pashinyan, should participate in the negotiations with Baku.

Returning to Brussels, we recall that Pashinyan promised to continue cooperation with NATO within the framework of peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Commenting on this position of Yerevan, Secretary of the Armenia’s National Security council Armen Grigoryan told Kommersant: “Azerbaijani officers are trained in Turkey. We want to understand this structure, understand how the Azerbaijani army works.”
