Kremlin calls new Trump sanctions ‘unacceptable’

The Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov,  has condemned as “unacceptable” new sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Russia over Moscow’s alleged involvement in the poisoning of a former Russian double agent.

The State Department on Wednesday announced that the Trump administration was imposing mandatory new sanctions on Russia for violating a U.S. law prohibiting chemical and biological weapons. In March former Russian spy Sergey Skripal and his daughter, Yulia Skripal, were poisoned with a Soviet-designed nerve agent known as Novichok. The poison was smeared onto the front door of Skripal’s home in Salisbury, England, and U.K. authorities have blamed the assassination attempt on the Kremlin.

The new U.S. sanctions ban the export of any national security-sensitive goods or technology to Russia and will affect such products as gas turbine engines, electronic devices and equipment, circuits and calibration equipment. A senior State Department official estimated the sanctions could affect hundreds of millions of dollars in trade with Russia

Mari Manoogian flanked by supporters from the Armenian community in Michigan

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (Armenian Weekly)—Mari Manoogian has won the Democratic primary for the Michigan State House of Representatives’ 40th District. Manoogian defeated Nicole Bedi with 53% of the vote. “I’m so thrilled about the way our team performed over the past few weeks,” Manoogian said. “We turned up door knocking to reach all the voters in our district. We knocked on over 16,500 doors and reached thousands of voters. I’m so incredibly proud. It’s an honor to be the Democratic nominee.”

Manoogian will face off against fellow Birmingham resident and Republican candidate David Wolkinson in the November general election for the state’s 40th House District seat held by outgoing Rep. Mike McCready (R-Birmingham), who is term-limited.

“The Armenian National Committee of Michigan and the Michigan Armenian community are so very proud of Mari and look forward to continuing our support for her bid for State Representative,” said ANC MI chair Lara Nercessian. “She is an inspiration to young Armenians looking to run for office and an example of what hard work and dedication can lead to.”

Manoogian is a native of Birmingham, Michigan and graduate of George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. While in college, she interned for then-Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.) and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power. After graduation, Mari worked in the Office of English Language Programs at the U.S. Department of State.

Manoogian is a great-grandchild of survivors of the Armenian Genocide from Sepastia and Keghi on her mother’s side, and Yerzinga and Keghi on her father’s side. Manoogian attended the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Zavarian Armenian language school in Troy, Mich. for 10 years.
