Whether street culture and trade are “colorful part” of city or disturbance (video)

Chief of Police Valeri Osipyan has to explain why yesterday the police detained two street musicians who were from Ukraine. According to Osipyan, the musicians were not sober, they argued with each other, the passers-by were watching, so they had to intervene. The musicians were released after making the corresponding protocol.

For several days now, street music has been the subject of intense discussions on social networks. The opinions are different. The same image is in our surveys. The passers-by mostly like it, and the residents do not.

At the same time, many people, especially tourists, consider the street musicians as part of the North Avenue.

“Musicians are a good people, they give a unique color to the city and its streets. There will not be interesting without them,” they say.

Citizens offer their own solutions by bringing examples from other countries. There should be a law, according to which, musicians will be allowed to play only one and a half hours in the area.

However, the Chief of Police commend the musicians to sing and play lower and only until 23:00.

Merchants selling children’s toys, balloons and other small items at Republic Square and North Avenue also are in the attention of the police. They are not allowed to sell their goods.

Merchants are ready to even pay taxes in order just to work, as they have no other source of money.

“I have a disability, I do not want to go and steal, they wither should allow me to sell or provide me with job,” says the seller of the balloons.

Toy sellers insist that they will continue to complain untill the issue is resolved.

Konstantin Orbelyan talks about Moscow’s “failed” performance, Hasmik Papyan and Opera’s problems (video)

Konstantin Orbelyan has good relationships with opera singer Hasmik Papyan and the rumors that Mrs. Papyan does not express positively about his work, are unclear and unpleasant for him.

“The Opera, of course, has problems which are primarily based on financial difficulties. 85 million drams have been cut from the budget, “says Orbelyan. For the new performances, for example, the art director has provided his own money. Wages are not high, they have instruments problem, they need to repair the roof. There are a lot of problems and each and every one of them needs an urgent solution. They must be able to fix the conditions, which is not easy.

“Like Swan Lake, which is the brand of the Great Theater, Aram Khachaturian’s Gayane ballet is the brand of our opera. Even the Director General of Moscow’s Great Theater mentioned it. If it were a weak show, Grand Theater would not allow it even to come close at its doors,” says Armen Grigoryan, Honored Art Worker of Armenia and adds, “How can one speak about the ‘failed’ performance based on only the Kommersant newspaper? The newspaper, whose source is Azerbaijan.”

To the question about getting back the position of principal conductor, and the issue of separating artistic director and director positions, Mr. Orbelyan replied that if the artistic director is also a conductor, then the position of the principal conductor is meaningless.

According to Mr. Orbelyan, the agreement of invitation to work in the Opera was like this, so it will work like this. And then, if they want, they can change.

Asbarez: Haytoug Marks 85th Anniversary of AYF

The cover of the upcoming edition of Haytoug

Editor’s Note: Haytoug, the official publication of the Armenian Youth Federation Western United States, has been the voice of its members and the Armenian Cause for decades and continues to be a critical part of the Armenian-American youth, whose aspirations, motivation and drive to advance the Armenian Cause have set the tone and the agenda for our community for generations.

Below is a message from this publication’s editors.

Reflecting on oneself is central to growth. The Armenian Youth Federation celebrated its 85th year of serving the Armenian youth and its community this year, and reflecting on this milestone is the responsibility of every member.

The past 85 years have been a whirlwind of new and evolving ambitions, challenges, and victories for the AYF. A central tenet of our organization continues to be looking honestly and objectively at ourselves and fostering our continued growth. We acknowledge this and prosper.

We are confident this issue of Haytoug Magazine will allow for that reflection for our members, our alumni, as well as the community at large–all who are integral parts of the organization.

As a youth organization with a presence in all corners of the world, our members believe that it is it in their hands, alongside driven entities in the country and abroad, to be the architects of the nation. During the month-long demonstrations in Armenia–popularly known as the Velvet Revolution, toppling Serzh Sarkisian’s regime–the youth proved yet again that they have an integral role in advancing change in Armenia and demonstrated the Armenian people’s verve and courage to question the status quo.

We have found a renewed assurance of Armenian identity, culture, and the importance of participating in nation building.

Armenians today are looking forward to the future more than ever.

The AYF is cognizant that the struggle of achieving a strong nation is not one dimensional. Its members engage in all manners of initiatives: motivate and connect with Armenians of diverse backgrounds; pursue advocacy at all levels of government; organize the masses to fight injustices; raise funds to aid families of fallen soldiers; stay present as a cultural and educational tool for Armenian youth around the globe; and the list continues.

Karekin Njdeh’s mission was to instill the Armenian identity and spirit within Diasporan youth who are not in the homeland. Decades later, his mission still stands with a new generation raised on the conviction that power is within the people, and with the duty to cultivate this new awakening.

Asbarez: Akhtamar Church Set to Reopen for Mass on Sept. 9

Crowds gathered at Akhtamar when it first reopened

VAN—Four years after an annual religious service was cancelled, an iconic Armenian church on an island in Lake Van will host a mass next month with participation of Christians from around the world, reported the Daily Sabah newspaper.

The Holy Cross Church on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van in eastern Turkey, which is usually open to public as museum, will host its first international religious ceremony in four years.
The Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul is organizing the event, which is expected to attract hundreds of Christians from around Turkey and the world. Turkey Culture and Tourism Ministry and local authorities gave the green light for the event to held on Sept. 9.

According to the source, travel agencies and hotels in the Van province where the lake is located have seen a substantial increase in bookings while local businesses are counting on faith tourism dollars.

Added to the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage in 2015, the church was built between 915 and 921 A.D. by architect Bishop Manuel, under the supervision of Gagik I Artsruni, an Armenian king.

Believed to be constructed to house a piece of the “True Cross,” which was used in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the church was restored in 2005 and opened in 2007. The church has been hosting annual international religious ceremonies organized by the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul once a year since 2010.
