Baku discusses the possibility of the arrival of Armenian football players for the League of Europe matches.

Yerevan September 1

Alexander Avanesov. “We would not want to get ahead of football processes. Let the teams determine their own applications for matches against “Garabagh”. After that it will be possible to return to this issue. If we receive an appeal on this matter, it will be considered, “said the head of the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Hikmet Hajiyev, 1news.az, commenting on the possibility of refusing the arrival of the London Arsenal player in Baku for the Europa League match against Azeri” Garabagh ” the national team of Armenia Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

As is known, “Arsenal” was in group E, in which, besides “Garabagh”, there were also Lisbon “Sporting” and Ukrainian “Vorskla”. In the latter, by the way, is another Armenian football player – Gegham Kadimyan. After the two clubs got into one group with “Karabakh“, the question arose whether the Armenian footballers will come to the matches of the Europa League in Baku. Moreover, the final of the Europa League this season will also take place in Baku. And “Arsenal”, in the opinion of bookmakers, is one of the main favorites of the tournament. The fan page of the London club on Twitter “Afcstuff” announced immediately after the draw that Heinrich Mkhitaryan will miss the Baku game against “Garabagh”, as “Azerbaijan prohibits entry for citizens of this country because of strained relations with Armenia“, and there it is added that for these reasons, Mkhitaryan will also miss the final if Arsenal breaks in there.

Let’s remind that in October 2015 Henrikh Mkhitaryan did not come to the Europa League match against Gabala as part of his former club – the German “Borussia”.

The Blue Diamond Geroskipou beach in Paphos will offer the chance to enjoy the moonlight, the majestic feel of last nights by the sea, while providing a truly international musical affair next Saturday.

Under Music in the Moonlight, soprano Anoki Von Arx, singer Gore Melian and pianist Zara Barkhoudarian will present a very diverse programme. Together, the three artists will set the tone for the night with pop and opera songs in English, German, Russian, Armenian, Italian, French and Czech.

Arx brings a fun element to the Opera. She gives the audience an explanation about the songs on the programme to get closer to the people she is singing to and also to bring more people close to opera.

After an international dancing career, Arx devoted herself to opera singing. Her voice covers the entire spectrum from high and dramatic soprano to mezzo. In 2010, she started to combine opera singing with break dance and hip hop. It may sound like a clash of artistic forms that should not blend together, but Arx creates a productive contrast that leaves you wondering why it was not done before.

Melian, from Armenia, grew up in a musical family and was greatly inspired by his mother Zara Barkhoudarian. Since the age of three he sung and performed on local and international stages. He studied Rock and Pop Grade eight at Trinity College London and has been composing music and lyrics since he was 15 years old.

He sings in English, Greek and Armenian. His music covers a broad spectrum from R ‘n’ B, soul, pop and the classics. He also deals with music production.

Among his many achievements is his digital single Suddenly which he wrote, produced and performed. The song made it through to the semi-finals in the Love Songs category of a UK song writing contest in 2011. It has been played consistently on Cypriot radio stations such as KissFM, Deejay radio and Ant1. In 2016 he wrote, produced and performed his digital single Fear vs Love which has received lots of media attention and has also been broadcast on local radio stations. He also came first in a competition to represent us at the Eurovision Song Contest with his song I Wanna Thank You. Although he didn’t represent us at the Eurovision, he did do so at the Malta International Hit Song Festival with the song. His first album was released in 2009 and he has recently had the honour of being successfully involved in the Berlin Eurovision Song Contest in Berlin.

Soprano and concert pianist, Barkhoudarian started piano lessons at the age of six at the Armenian Music School Tchaikovsky. She continued her studies at the Conservator of Yerevan. At 18 she became the soloist of the Armenian State Tele Radio Choir, with which she toured all over Europe and won numerous prizes and awards. She moved to Cyprus in 1995 and regularly performs all over the island. She also performs abroad and organises a number of charity-concerts every year. Barkoudarian also teaches piano, vocal and music theory at the European Conservatory of Music of Litsa Koutalari-Iaonnou.

BEIRUT: Two people were killed and a further three injured in a fight between a Syrian-Lebanese man and Armenian Lebanese residents of Burj Hammoud in Metn Friday that included a Lebanese Army officer, multiple sources told The Daily Star. A security source confirmed to The Daily Star the numbers of killed and wounded, while an Army source said that the issue was under investigation and that he could not yet divulge details.

The state-run National News Agency reported that several people had been injured.

A large security presence took over streets in the area Friday night as the Army and the Internal Security Forces worked to secure the area and prevent the outbreak of further clashes.

Metn MP Hagop Pakradounian told The Daily Star Friday’s deadly fight was just the latest in a series of violent incidents in the area, at least one of which had involved the same Syrian-Lebanese man, who he said was originally Kurdish.

According to Pakradounian, the Syrian-Lebanese man had begun cursing Armenians and the Armenian Tashnag party that is prominent locally – and to which Pakradounian belongs – while sitting on his balcony Friday evening. Burj Hammoud is an area populated largely by Lebanese Armenians.

Following the Syrian-Lebanese man’s verbal attacks on the locals, a number of them went up to his apartment to intervene.

“He pulled out a knife,” attacking the group of men and killing one, while injuring several others, including the reportedly off-duty Army officer.

“Then he [the Syrian-Lebanese man] got what he deserved,” Pakradounian said.

Local news website LBCI reported that one of the Lebanese Armenian men – whom multiple outlets reported to be 50 years old, but who the NNA said was 70 – died as a result of a knife injury, while the Syrian-Lebanese man died as the result of a bullet wound.

“We ask locals not to retaliate for what happened, and we have contacted all the relevant persons and security agencies,” MP Pakradounian said.

FARS News Agency, Iran
September 1, 2018 Saturday
Official Calls for Expediting Completion of Iran-Armenia Electricity
Transfer Line
TEHRAN (FNA)- Chairman of Iran-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group
Ramezanali Sobhanifar urged speeding up the implementation of the
third power transfer line between the two countries.
"We call for implementation of the third electricity transfer line,
investment in Meghri Free Economic Zone and mutual cooperation in
establishing hydro, wind, and solar power plants in Armenia,"
Sobhanifar said in a meeting with Armenian National Assembly President
Ara Babloyan.
He underlined that Tehran and Yerevan have had strong ties and have
stood by each other in hardships.
"The parliaments of Iran and Armenia can contribute to cement
bilateral ties in customs, investment, energy, transportation and
commerce," he added.
Babloyan, for his part, pointed to his country's close relations with
Iran, and said, "Relations with Iran have always been of great
importance and have not been affected by any regional issues."
He reiterated that the two countries' relations have always been
stable and will not be subject to any changes.
"The two countries' parliaments can have collaborations in expanding
energy infrastructure as well as trade cooperation," Babloyan said,
while underlining the crucial importance of transportation, transit
and customs for Iran and Armenia.
He further said that Iran can make use of the Eurasian Economic Union
(EAEU) opportunities and strengthen relationships with EAEU and
European Union (EU) through Armenia.
In relevant remarks in late July, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister
Homayoun Haeri announced that Tehran and Yerevan are currently working
hard to finalize implementation of the third power transmission line
from Iran to Armenia.
"Taking timely measures for implementation of the third power
transmission line from Iran to Armenia is one of the most important
parts of Iran-Armenia bilateral and multilateral cooperation," Haeri
said after his meeting with Armenian Minister of Energy
Infrastructures and Natural Resources Artur Grigoryan in Yerevan.
The Iranian deputy energy minister said that during his meeting with
Grigoryan, the Armenian minister underlined that the importance of
finalizing the project of construction of the third high-voltage
Iran-Armenia power transmission line.
Grigoryan, who serves also as a co-chairman of the Armenian-Iranian
intergovernmental commission, noted that in the context of
intensification of economic cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan,
construction of a high-voltage power transmission line between Armenia
and Georgia can play a serious role.
The sides also exchanged views on the agreements reached at the 15th
meeting of the Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission held in
Yerevan in 2018. It was stressed that the intergovernmental commission
has a special mission in deepening and expanding trade and economic
relations between the countries.
Both sides stressed the importance of the need to intensify mutual
visits, which help find effective solutions to problems arising in the
implementation of joint projects.
Iran and Armenia signed four agreements in the fields of economy,
customs and sports agreements in February.
The four cooperation agreements in the fields of economy, customs and
sports were inked at the closing ceremony of 15th Summit of Joint
Commission of Iran and Armenia Cooperation.
Earlier this year, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian had placed
special emphasis on the necessity of steering public and private
sectors to increase transaction volume and joint investment.
"Fortunately, the 15th meeting of Joint Technical, Economic and
Cultural Commission between Iran and Armenia was held in an amicable
and peaceful environment," he said, adding, "I hope that mutual
cooperation would be boosted between the two countries in the best
possible form in future."

Sports: Why Mkhitaryan could miss match against Qarabag & Europa League final

 The Independent - Daily Edition
September 1, 2018 Saturday
Why Mkhitaryan could miss match against Qarabag & Europa League final
by LUKE BROWN
Unai Emery faces a possible selection headache over Armenian
international Henrikh Mkhitaryan, after Arsenal were drawn in the same
Europa League group as Azerbaijani side FK Qarabag.
Mkhitaryan was forced to miss a previous European trip to the country
while at Borussia Dortmund in 2015, because of 'safety concerns'
relating to a conflict between Azerbaijan and his native Armenia.
Arsenal are due to meet Qarabag in Baku on 4 November. The 2018/19
Europa League final is also due to be staged in the city, which could
pose further problems for Arsenal should they qualify.
On Friday, Emery said he had not yet discussed the situation with
Mkhitaryan, but added that he wants to include the 29-year-old in his
squad for the match if possible. Emery has started Mkhitaryan in each
of his three Premier League matches in charge of the club so far.
"Not yet," he replied, when asked if he had met with Mkhitaryan. "But
I would like he stays with us. This problem, if we can together
arrange, I think it is better, but I have not yet spoken with him."
Arsenal later added in a statement: "Safety and security of all our
players and staff is always a top priority. We will be looking into
this situation, talk to the player and make a decision after that."
Uefa meanwhile pledged to support any visa application made on behalf
of the player.
"It is a standard procedure for Uefa to send letters of support to
associations, clubs or embassies in order to obtain visas for players
in order to be able to travel to another country and play in Uefa
matches," a spokesperson told The Independent.
The Independent has contacted the Azerbaijan embassy for comment and
is awaiting a response.
There are currently no diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and
Armenia owing to the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The region,
along with some neighbouring territory, has been under the control of
Armenian soldiers and local ethnic Armenian forces since a 1994
ceasefire ended a bloody six-year war. There have been occasional
outbreaks of violence since.
Arsenal have also been drawn alongside Sporting Lisbon and Ukrainian
side Vorskla Poltava, in a group that involves almost 10,000 miles of
travel. However Emery - who won the tournament three years in a row
while at Sevilla - has pledged to make the Europa League a priority.
"We want to go far in this competition," Emery said. "Each match is
different and each match involves a lot of travel. For some, the
travel is very long but it's like that.
"The adaptation for these three teams needs to be positive and we need
to face them with ambition and our interest to do well in the
competition."
The Arsenal manager also suggested he would be experimenting with his
line-up when Arsenal's squad return from next week's international
break.
"When you play two matches in a week, you have more time to prepare
for the matches, to prepare the players physically," he said.
"When you play three matches in a week, it's hard. There's less time
to prepare for the match and work physically, but we want it like
that. We want to play three matches in a week with the league and the
cups.

Tension between Azerbaijan-Armenia may see Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan miss Europa tie vs Qarabag

Aveek Chakraborty

Bengaluru, September 2: Henrikh Mkhitaryan could miss Arsenal’s important Europa League group stage fixture against Qarabag FK because of some political tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The 29-year-old Armenia international is growing as an important figure under new manager Unai Emery but for the Europa tie, the Spaniard might have to leave Mkhitaryan behind as he would not be given a visa.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are in conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and relations between the countries worsened in 2016 when at least 200 people were killed in clashes for which the Azerbaijan government has prohibited any Armenians from entering the country.

Back in 2015 when Mkhitaryan was with Borussia Dortmund, he had to again stay back in Germany for a Europa League tie against Gabala, another Azerbaijan side, because of security concerns.

And now with Arsenal’s group stage game set to be scheduled for October 4 in Azerbaijan capital Baku, the attacker is expected to remain in London.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery however has now responded to the situation positively suggesting his side will reach out to authorities for a visa approval for the player and hope for a positive outcome.

“I would like that he can (travel) with us,” Emery said.

“And this problem, if we can together arrange (a solution), it’s better. But I have not yet spoken with him.”

Regarding the situation, UEFA has assured the club that they will try to resolve the issue and released an official statement on the matter.

“It is a standard procedure for UEFA to send letters of support to associations, clubs or embassies in order to obtain visa for players in order to be able to travel to another country and play in UEFA competition matches,” the governing body said.

Arsenal will face Qarabag in their second match in this season’s Europa League where Emery and his players will make a 5,000 mile round trip in between Premier League matches against Watford and Fulham.

Armenian national team coach Vardan Minasyan announced the squad list for the upcoming Nations League visit to Skopje where Armenia will match Macedonia in what is supposed to be a clash for the table top.

Unlike the Macedonian coach who called up only 18 players Minasyan summoned 23 of which three goalkeepers. On the list is Tigran Barseghyan, the attacker of Vardar who should be Armenia’s secret weapon. Only Alik Arakelyan is debutant, while there are few foreign players of Armenian origin like Jordy Joao, André Calisir and Ivan Yagan who debuted earlier this year.

Armenia this year played four friendlies, two of them before the World Cup unlike Macedonia who opted to be inactive that period. However, Armenia’s record in those four friendlies is disappointing as they played three draws (0:0 vs. Estonia and Moldova, 1:1 vs. Malta) and a 1:0 defeat by Lithuania with only one goal scored.
