Aznavour: French singer defied odds to command global stage
CHARLES AZNAVOUR, 1924 – 2018;
French singer defied odds to command global stage
by Kim Willsher
Charles Aznavour’s start in showbiz was unpromising: He was small, measuring just 5-foot-3; made nervous gestures on stage; and was told by voice coaches that he had no charisma and could not sing.
Aznavour sang anyway. A young protege of the legendary Edith Piaf, for whom he was a warm-up act at Paris’ Moulin Rouge, he went on to such global acclaim that his fans deemed him France’s Frank Sinatra.
On Monday, after a career spanning more than eight decades, the French Armenian singer died, at age 94, at his home in Provence in southeast France. The news brought an outpouring of grief and tributes across France.
President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: “Charles Aznavour was profoundly French, deeply attached to his Armenian roots and recognized throughout the world. He has accompanied the joys and sorrows of three generations. His masterpieces, the tone of his voice, his unique radiance will long survive him.”
Former French leader Francois Hollande also weighed in, tweeting: “From Yerevan to Paris he sang for love and liberty in all cities of the world. Aznavour has just said adieu, but for us he will always be on stage.”
Aznavour was born in Paris to Armenian immigrants in 1924. At 9, he had roles in a Paris stage play and a film, and left school early to begin a career dancing and singing.
During the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, the Aznavour family hid Jews and others facing persecution from the Gestapo, actions that in 2017 prompted Israeli President Reuven Rivlin to present Aznavour and his older sister, Aida, with the Raoul Wallenberg Award for their wartime activities.
Aznavour recorded more than 1,200 songs in eight languages and sold more than 180 million records. His lyrics were mostly about love, but also about marriage and — ahead of his time — homosexuality and men showing their emotions.
He performed around the world, including at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, and penned songs interpreted by Fred Astaire, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, Elton John and Bob Dylan, among many others.
In 1998, CNN named him the Entertainer of the Century, beating out Dylan and Elvis Presley. In August 2017, he was awarded the 2,618th star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
He also appeared in more than 60 films, most notably Francois Truffaut’s “Tirez sur le Pianiste” (“Shoot the Piano Player”) released in 1960, which shot him to international fame. He also had starring roles in 1974’s “And Then There Were None” (better known as “Ten Little Indians”) and 1979’s “The Tin Drum,” which won the Academy Award for best foreign-language film.
His support for Armenia was another constant in his long life: He raised money after the devastating 1988 earthquake and campaigned for the 1915 massacre of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire to be formally declared a genocide, a move that Turkey vehemently opposed.
Aznavour was on the road right up until his death. His “farewell tour” began in 2006 and was supposed to go on for four years. In the end, it continued for more than a decade. His last concert was in Tokyo two weeks ago.
To give it all up would be the death of him, he told a French journalist in a broadcast interview Friday. Besides, he said, he and sister Aida, 95, had vowed to celebrate their centenary.
“My sister and I decided we’re going to see 100 years. It’s on the record. She doesn’t have the right to go back on it, and neither do I,” he said.
Despite his fame and ability to sell out concert halls, Aznavour remained self-deprecating.
In his autobiography, “Aznavour by Aznavour,” published in English in 1972, he wrote: “What were my faults? My voice, my size, my gestures, my lack of culture and education, my honesty, or my lack of personality. My voice? I cannot change it. The teachers I consulted all agreed I shouldn’t sing, but nevertheless I continued to sing until my throat was sore.”
Aznavour is survived by his third wife, Ulla Thorsell, his sister and five of his six children.

VERELQ presents the most notable publications of the Armenian press.
“time” the daily writes. “Prosperous Armenia” party is on the verge of liquidation. Many members of that party are going to announce tomorrow that they will leave the party in order not to share the responsibility for the disgraceful behavior of the “Tsarukyan” alliance. In the local government elections to be held on October 21, candidates nominated by PAP or supported by PAP will withdraw in the coming days, realizing that they have no chance of winning.”
“Publication” the newspaper writes. “Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan– Head of the National Assembly RPA faction Vahram Baghdasaryan the negotiations were quite monotonous, although at the beginning Pashinyan made his demand: elections in two to three months, he does not see any other topic of negotiation. Vahram Baghdasaryan said: Well, you could have said that over the phone, what was the point of meeting? After which a conversation started. Pashinyan presented his arguments, to which Vahram Baghdasaryan objected, regarding the time-consuming processes of the Electoral Code and constitutional amendments. The RPA is of the opinion that it should be put “dry” until 2022. the option of the parliament to work so that during the negotiations they “receive” at least the May deadline of next year. “And if we are honest, we are ready for all options, we do not rule out any option. we have to wait for the negotiation results of the other factions-forces, I think several rounds of negotiations will be needed.”
“People” the newspaper writes. “According to the information of “Zhoghovurd” daily, the second president of RA, Robert Kocharyan, has started active contacts with RPA members and Serzh Sargsyan with Moreover, according to our sources, yesterday he attended the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan’s brother-in-law May Khachatryan at the funeral. Kocharyan mainly communicated with Serzh Sargsyan, and was quite active. They talked for a long time about what, it was not possible to find out. At the same time, according to the circulating news, Kocharyan was in the party’s office on the day of the session of the General Assembly of the RPA. It should be noted that for a long time, the relations between Kocharyan and Sargsyan were almost frozen. in one of his last interviews, Kocharyan said that he had seen Serzh Sargsyan twice in the last five years. “Zhoghovurd” daily newspaper tried to find out whether Kocharyan participated in the session of the General Assembly of the RPA or not, the RPA spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov gave a negative answer, saying. “Non-party Kocharyan participates in the RPA session in what capacity? There’s nothing like it.”
“People” the newspaper writes. “The second president of RA in the Court of Cassation Robert KocharyanIn the case of the examination of the cassation complaint submitted by the RA General Prosecutor’s Office, a hopeless situation may arise. According to the information of “Zhoghovurd” daily, the judges of the court of cassation previously examined the criminal cases initiated against the political prisoners of March 1, 2008, passing guilty verdicts against the opposition figures. And that means that they cannot be impartial now in the matter of the restraining order against Kocharyan. And now, as the sources of “Zhoghovurd” daily claim, if the judges of the Court of Cassation recuse themselves, there will be no one left. This is perhaps another proof that Armenia needs a serious transformation it also has the judicial system.”
“Publication” the daily writes. “After eavesdropping on the conversation of the heads of the National Security Service and the National Security Service, the high-ranking officials in the government decided to change their mobile phone numbers, so that the “covenant” does not knock on their door one day. However, member of the “Civil Contract” party, deputy Hrachya Hakobyan assured our journalist that he personally did not change the number, there is no such thing. By the way, the publication of the wiretapping and the formation of the PACE monitoring commission for the purpose of studying human rights in Armenia have introduced certain corrections in the actions of law enforcement structures. they have become more careful and try to maintain legality when filing cases.”

Pashinyan’s resignation may be the most fatal mistake in Armenian history. political scientist

The Prime Minister asked the people’s opinion on every issue, asked for a mandate every time he had that mandate. Now with what mandate does he ignore the demand of the people not to resign? Political scientist Hayk Martirosyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
“Why does he silence the people? Where is that mandate? And if he doesn’t get it, by what right does he put the vote of the people who elected him at risk?
Why did you suddenly stop consulting and go against the will of the people? The people are against that resignation. It could be the most fatal mistake in Armenian history, because it could cost us our homeland and his life,” he wrote.
Nikol Pashinyan will resign from the post of Prime Minister and if the National Assembly fails to elect a new Prime Minister twice, then the Parliament will be dissolved. This is the plan he presented at the rally. Before that, a bill was passed in the National Assembly, which significantly complicates the government’s initiative to dissolve the National Assembly.
Political scientist Styopa Safaryan has a different opinion. On October 2, Prime Minister Pashinyan showed a master class in managing the political situation. RPA, PAP, ARF did not even understand how they brought the NA elections into the yard of the parliament. This is the opinion of a political scientist Styopa Safaryan:
According to him, the extraordinary NA elections are already knocking on the door of the NA. “Releasing PAP and ARF ministers from their positions directly on the street has a name that I will not give here because of the presence of women and girls. It was self-destruction for those parties. But the master class technology did not end there. Nikol Pashinyan stated that he had the impression from his meetings with the Tsarukyan Alliance and the ARF that they would not nominate a candidate for prime minister, and if he misunderstood, let them deny or confirm it. After the public judgment, PAP and ARF have two ways. either they declare that Nikol got it right, I mean, they should announce that Nikol is right, in line with Serzh Sargsyan, and thus indirectly announce that they were wrong and were going to be publicly humiliated, or announce that they are black and will nominate a candidate against the people, that is, take the banner of the counter-revolution,” he says.
According to him, Nikol Pashinyan has already insured that he may have misunderstood, and those forces should talk about what they will do. Both options are beneficial to Pashinyan. if they do not nominate a candidate, the RPA remains alone under the pressure of the people, the election of the prime minister will fail in three sessions, not two. If they join the RPA, the field is catastrophically cleared and these parties leave politics under popular disgust.
“Today, even the small percentages of their authority have been reduced to zero, and they are already literally shaking the margin between this and that side. Pashinyan also announced that President Armen Sargsyan will play for the people, therefore he becomes a part of the process of bringing the revolution to its logical end. Applause to the police, the National Security Service, the National Security Service, the soldiers meant that the forces are with the people. And it is unnecessary to talk about the road map announced by Pashinyan,” he notes. he
“Dramatic night”. conflict of interest was inevitable, two possible scenarios remain
- 03.10.2018
- Armenia:

Public figure Avetik Chalabyan spoke on his Facebook page about yesterday’s “dramatic night” and analyzed what happened yesterday and why.
We present the entire post below. “After a dramatic night, a new morning is dawning, and many of you are probably asking yourself what will happen now. In order to answer that question, we must first understand what happened yesterday and why.
During the Yerevan elections, it became obvious that Nikol Pashinyan, and the revolutionary movement led by him, will try to capitalize on the results of the elections and go for the accelerated dissolution of the National Assembly, although the same Nikol Pashinyan had announced before that that he is inclined to organize the extraordinary elections of the National Assembly in May-June next year. It also became obvious that in those elections the forces representing the previous political system have at best a small chance to overcome the threshold, and in the worst case they may not overcome it and remain on the political sidelines, and Nikol Pashinyan will get not only a constitutional majority in the National Assembly, but also de facto, unlimited power for the next five years. This obvious conflict of interests should lead to a clash, which happened yesterday.
However, unlike almost all previous clashes, this time it escalated the defensive side, and the consolidated vote of all three factions showed that it was a pre-organized and well-calculated move, the meaning of which was to escalate the political crisis and bring it to an accelerated conclusion. Part of that resolution already happened yesterday, when Nikol Pashinyan de facto resigned from the coalition government that has existed since May 8, dismissing the ministers representing them from their positions, and henceforth remained alone in the government (as well as being deprived of even the theoretical support of the National Assembly). The other step in the dissolution was Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement of his imminent resignation, with which he actually starts the process of dissolution of the National Assembly. With that, the events entered an accelerated phase, and now, if the resignation happens, there are only two possible scenarios.
The first scenario is understandable: the National Assembly does not elect a new prime minister, it is dissolved by force of law, and the country goes to new elections. In the second case, the three NA factions create a new parliamentary coalition, I elect a new prime minister, and he tries to pacify the street, with an absolutely unpredictable result, because as much as he can pacify, he can lead to bloodshed and chaos. It is clear that the first scenario is beneficial for the country, but in order for it to happen, the parties must come to an agreement and make mutual concessions. ARF Armen Rustamyan has already talked about the possible logic of concessions: to hold the elections next year, but within the agreed and fixed period of the memorandum, and turn the police into the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and place it under a politically neutral leader acceptable to all. It is clear that RPA and PAP have their own logic of concessions, although they have not formulated it clearly yet. Theoretically, the third scenario is also possible, when after the resignation of Nikol Pashinyan, the parties elect a politically neutral and mutually acceptable, technical prime minister by mutual agreement, who in a short time carries out the preparations for the elections in peaceful conditions, but the probability of this scenario is unclear for now.
In this situation, it would be reasonable for the revolutionary force and Nikol Pashinyan to withdraw from the accelerated resolution and sit down at the negotiating table. It is in the interests of all of us that this National Assembly be dissolved, new, democratic and fair elections take place, and a new political majority is formed, which will represent the country’s population and take full political responsibility for its future development. It is also in the interests of all of us that this process takes place smoothly and even more bloodlessly, and that there is no violation of legitimacy at any stage, which can instantly lead to the intervention of external forces.
This is possible if the revolutionary force realizes that, unlike in May, now an asymmetric balance of forces has been formed, and only force pressure on the street is no longer enough to disperse the National Assembly, and the arsenal of offensive actions in the legal field is actually exhausted. The defending party, no matter how politically weakened and discredited it is, is protected by the existing constitution, and by controlling the National Assembly, which is the highest body of power, it has a significant field of maneuver, which it will not give up just like that.
If we want the revolution to reach its logical conclusion, but at the same time without irretrievable losses, we must find a reasonable compromise that will provide the defending party with sufficient guarantees and incentives to abandon the National Assembly, which is the last bastion of its own legitimacy, and will pave the way for new elections. I think that the defense side is now waiting for such a proposal, and I hope that further developments will go in that direction.”

Pashinyan: Revolutionary euphoria will not pass in Armenia in the next 15 years
The post-revolutionary euphoria will not pass in Armenia in the next 15 years but it does not mean that 15 years elections will not be conducted in the country, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told reporters n Wednesday.
“Those who think that this political crisis must continue until May rate their narrow group interests higher than the state interests,” the premier stated.
Asked whether the president will sign the bill into law or not, the PM said that he does not think Armenia’s president will do anything against Armenia’s people.
He also convinced that after his resignation no uncontrollable situation will be created in the country but if so he did not exclude the conduction of all day rallies.
