Vahagn Tevosyan: The behavior of the bears, their reactions are very disappointing (video)

A few days ago, the bear of El Garden restaurant complex was taken to Urtsadzor Wildlife Rescue Center. We asked Vahagn Tevosyan, Public Relations Coordinator for the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets, what the state of the bears moving from prison to quarantine centers, particularly the El Garden bear was. “The behavior of the bears, their reactions are very disappointing.

Unknowingly, the owners have fed them with food that is contradicts to their organism. As for behavioral anomalies, even non-specialists can notice that in case of some bears. For example, when the bear moved from Aparan, he began to act very aggressively in freedom, most probably he was tortured. And the bear of the El Garden, appearing in a tremendous barrow, walks only in 4 meters. It’s the size of the cage he lived in,” he said in a conversation with us.

Culture: Discovering the Legacy of Zabel Yessayan in Artsakh

The Armenian Weekly
Nov 13 2017

Born in 1878 in Constantinople, Yessayan played an important role in the tumultuous events shaping Armenian history in the first part of the 20th century. The contests are organized by Artsakh Ombudsman (Human Rights Defender) Ruben Melikyan, TUMO Stepanakert’s Korioun Khatchadourian, and Judith Saryan from Cambridge, Mass.

On Nov. 8, TUMO Stepanakert announced the winner of the Graphic Design T-shirt Contest. The winning entry was designed by Astghik Simonyan of Stepanakert. She created a stylized image of Yessayan’s face on the front of the t-shirt. Below it, she printed Yessayan’s quote, “Literature is not an ornament, a pleasant pastime, a pretty flower. Literature is a weapon to struggle against Injustice.” Simonyan designed a geometric pomegranate symbolizing Artsakh to adorn the back of the shirt.

The winners of the Human Rights Essay Contest in honor of Zabel Yessayan will be announced on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day.

Zabel Yessayan attracted a lot of attention during her lifetime, but she disappeared without a trace in a Soviet prison in the 1940s. Starting 15 years ago, her story resurfaced with the works of Lerna Ekmekcioglu and Melissa Bilal and the documentary, “Finding Zabel Yessayan.” Ever since, Yessayan’s books have been translated into English, French, Turkish, and Italian.

Earlier this year, the Mayor of Paris announced that a street was recently named after Yessayan, a group of women Turkey recently created a play about her life and works, and researchers are combing through her archives in Yerevan to learn more about this brilliant and courageous woman.

The Zabel Yessayan Human Rights Essay Contest is co-sponsored Tufenkian Foundation and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR).

Sports: Man United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan might be about to regain form

Man United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan might be about to regain form: MEN

Manchester United playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s form has plummeted but he might be about to regain it under boss Jose Mourinho, The Manchester Evening News said in an article on Monday, November 13.

Manchester United supporters might have wondered whether Paul Pogba had defected to France after seeing Armenia had battered Belarus 4-1 last week and that Henrikh Mkhitaryan had made the goals and assists columns.

Mkhitaryan’s form has plummeted in recent weeks yet it is a measure of his significance that a player who could not get in the team a year ago now cannot get out of it. His bench berth at Huddersfield was more of a rest than a demotion and in a squad which, by Jose Mourinho’s reckoning, is short of creativity Mkhitaryan remains indispensable, MEN says.

There are mitigating factors behind Mkhitaryan’s forlorn form. He does not look quite himself without Pogba and the Frenchman’s absence has been compounded by Mourinho placing grit ahead of guile in United’s recent fixtures. United played their best football in a settled set-up in the first months and in the seven matches between the October internationals they played in 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2 and 3-4-1-2.

It would be inaccurate to determine Mkhitaryan is the problem when he was not on the pitch for that first-half horror show at Huddersfield. Mourinho’s preference for two strikers against Tottenham and Chelsea left Mkhitaryan – detached from the wing-backs – isolated and overwhelmed by Cesc Fabregas, N’Golo Kante and Tieumoue Bakayoko, just as he was by Liverpool’s midfield trio.

Only Pogba has a higher dispossessed average than Mkhitaryan in the United squad and that is a consequence of risk-taking.

“Mourinho has invested more faith in Mkhitaryan than he would have liked. For a manager who privately bemoaned his squad’s lack of innovation at the beginning of last tenure, an impotent attack has only been enhanced with Lukaku at the expense of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Antoine Griezmann and Ivan Perisic eluded United, so the pressure has increased on the creative pairing of Pogba and Mkhitaryan. The latter has become exposed without the former and the spell has coincided with United facing three of their big six competitors, showpieces Mkhitaryan has struggled to perform in,” the article says.

“And that might be why United have not ended their interest in Griezmann and are monitoring Mesut Ozil’s situation at Arsenal. The German is eager to reunite with Mourinho after they worked together for three years at Real Madrid and that might be the additional stimulus Mkhitaryan needs to regain his form.”

YEREVAN, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — Armenia beat Cyprus 3-2 in a friendly match at the Vazgen Sargsyan Stadium here on Monday.

Armenia’s Haik Ishkhanyan scored the opener in the 17th minute for his first goal for the national squad in his only second appearance for Armenia.

Varazadat Haroyan doubled the score with a spectacular header in the 38th minute before the Cypriots pulled one back on Konstantinos Laifis in the 50th minute.

Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a flawless penalty after Armenia’s Tigran Barseghyan was fouled in the 63rd minute to make it 3-1.

Cyprus managed to close it again but were not good enough to stop Armenia from nailing down another win after crushing Belarus 4-1 last Thursday. Enditem

Rutgers receives $34M collection of Soviet-era art

Rutgers receives $34M collection of Soviet-era art
Emerson I. Max
Rutgers University has received what it says is its largest-ever
single donation, a huge collection of Soviet nonconformist art valued
at more than $34 million.
Nancy Dodge, widow of famed economist and art collector Norton Dodge,
is the donor of the collection, which contains over 17,300 artworks,
the university said in a statement Thursday. The works will join the
body of over 4,000 pieces of Soviet nonconformist art the Dodges
donated in 1991 to Rutgers Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in New
Brunswick, N.J.
It is staggering to have the entire collection brought together at
last, said Thomas Sokolowski, director of the Zimmerli. Rutgers
University No. 2, Sacralizators for a Friendly Party (1979) by Viktor
Pivovarov. Graphite and colored pencil on paper.
The Dodge family-related Avenir Foundation also will provide an
endowment of $10 million for exhibiting and conserving the art and for
scholarships.
The joined collections contain the work of more than 1,000 artists who
were active between the 1950s and the collapse of the Soviet Union in
the early 1990s.
The newly donated works include paintings on canvas and panel,
sculptures, assemblages, installations, works on paper, photographs,
videos, and artists books.
Besides Russia, the collection includes works produced in the former
Soviet republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and
Uzbekistan, the university said.
My husband, Norton, and I felt it was our mission to bring to light
these remarkable works that had been consigned to obscurity, and to
honor artists of exceptional talent who had been suppressed and
defamed, Dodge said in a statement.
The university said the donation makes the museum the world s
principal site for studying and exhibiting the most vital, diverse,
and daring strains of art produced throughout the USSR over four
decades.
This remarkable gift underscores our university s cultural and
educational value to our global society, said Deba Dutta, chancellor
of Rutgers=New Brunswick.
The largest donation Rutgers had previously received was $27 million
from an anonymous donor in 2011 to fund endowed chair positions.

Yerevan-Tehran Cooperation Poses No Setback for Ties Between Armenia, Israel – Nalbandian

Sputnik News Service, Russia
 Saturday 12:05 AM UTC
Yerevan-Tehran Cooperation Poses No Setback for Ties Between Armenia,
Israel - Nalbandian
YEREVAN, November 11 (Sputnik) - The cooperation between Yerevan and
Tehran poses no obstacles to the bilateral relations between Armenia
and Israel, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said.
"I don’t think this is an obstacle in our bilateral relations with
Israel as the relations of Israel with any neighbouring country of
Armenia is not an obstacle," Nalbandian said in an interview with the
Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, issued on the Foreign
Ministry's website.
Nalbandian added that Iran and Armenia have established good relations
and cooperate in multiple areas. Commenting on the issue of reciprocal
opening of embassies by Israel and Armenia, the foreign minister said
that Yerevan would immediately follow Israel's example.
"Our position was very clear: as soon as Israel will open an embassy
in Armenia, we will reciprocate and open an Embassy in Israel,"
Nalbandian told the broadcaster.
On November 6-7, Nalbandian paid an official visit to Israel at the
invitation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The relations between Israel and Iran have been strained since the
Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s. The ties are overshadowed by a
number of issues, including Tehran's nuclear and missile programs
accompanied by controversial anti-Israeli statements made by
high-ranking Iranian officials, such as former Iranian President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
