“We are few, but they call us Armenians.”  These words by Paruyr Sevak rang true at the FIRST Global youth robotics competition held at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., where Armenia’s TUMO Center for Creative Technologies team took home the bronze medal.

FIRST, an acronym meaning For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, was established in 1989 and has organized local robotics competitions for elementary and high school students for many years.  However, this year marked the first time they held a global competition, with teams representing 150 countries, six continents, and Team Hope, representing refugees.

“I am so proud of them!” exclaimed Hayk Voskanyan, the team’s mentor and TUMO Center robotics workshop leader, as he watched FIRST founder Dean Kamen bestow the medals on his protégés.  The TUMO Center in Yerevan was the home of Team Armenia where they designed, built, and tested their remote-controlled robot in preparation for the competition.

The initiative brought attention to the global challenge of providing clean drinking water.  Robots needed to collect plastic balls from the center of the field, sort the blue ones (representing clean water) from the orange ones (representing contaminants), and deposit them according to color.

Although more students were involved during the preparation stage in Yerevan, seven 15-18-year-olds were selected to travel to Washington for the competition, including Levon Balagyozyan (Team Captain), Lilit Tarumyan (Spokesperson), Maria Ter Minasyan (Spokesperson), Ashot Tarumyan, Tigran Sahakyan, Davit Hovhanisyan, and Aram Madantsyan.  They shared the champions’ podium with Team Europe and Team Poland who won gold and silver respectively.

The event attracted national headlines when President Trump made an exception to the travel ban to ensure that Afghanistan’s all-female team would be admitted to the U.S. and able to participate.  It started with an Olympic-worthy opening ceremony on July 16, as teams entered with their national flags, cheered on by the many ambassadors and even one head of state, Canada’s Governor General-designate Julie Payette, who were in attendance.  The closing ceremony two days later was equally impressive and included a keynote speech delivered by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.

The TUMO students had a local fan club cheering them on, consisting of the staff and interns at the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) D.C. office.  Before the competition, they visited the ANCA headquarters to share their experience and career ambitions.

“It’s incredible what you guys are doing,” said Aram Hamparian, ANCA Executive Director. “When you’re done here, consider how your skills might contribute to the cause of Artsakh’s security by designing gunfire locator robots that can be deployed—as part of the Royce-Engel peace proposal along the border with Azerbaijan.”

The young robotics team took a brief respite from competition preparations for sightseeing, including a U.S. Capitol tour graciously hosted by Rep. Jim Costa (D-Calif.), who had visited the TUMO Center in Yerevan in 2016.  The group was welcomed their first evening in D.C. by families of the local Hamasdegh Armenian School.

The second FIRST Global challenge will be held in the summer of 2018 in Mexico City.

Robots, designed by the children of the children`s center "Tumo", perfectly coped with the task of confronting global dehydration

ArmInfo, Armenia

ArmInfo. The robots designed by the students of the Armenian Center for Creative Technologies “Tumo”, coped well with the task set by the organizers of the  international First Global Olympiad in robotics.

Armenian children succeeded in constructing robots that had been  given to them at the olympiad, who were able to distinguish the blue  balls from the red ones and in a limited time to collect their  specific quantity in a certain place. The animals of “Tumo” cope with  this task perfectly, nevertheless gave way to the team of the united  Europe and Poland, but at the same time left 160 countries behind  them.

“This is at first glance the task set by the organizers of the  Olympiad does not seem too complicated, considering the progress that  such technological direction as robotics is experiencing at the  present stage, but for children – beginning designers it is rather  difficult. We are glad that “Tumo” in the international arena  continues to hold high the flag of Armenia, thereby justifying the  numerous positive assessments that the center receives from the  international expert community,” ArmInfo was told in the center.

To note, the theme of this year on First Global was the problem of  global dehydration and young participants of the Olympiad made their  unusual technological contribution to it.

Armenian center of creative technologies “Tumo” recently entered the  top ten most innovative schools in the world according to the French  magazine We Demain. The center is not limited to working in the  Armenian capital and has branches in Gyumri, Dilijan and the capital  of Artsakh Stepanakert.

Sports: Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s “ties” with LeBron James and Zinedine Zidane

MediaMax, Armenia

The player who is touring in the U.S. with his team said this responding to fans’ questions, collected by UNINTERRUPTED.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan said that Zinedine Zidane had always been his idol in football, while he had not had a chance to meet him yet. The Armenian footballer informed about Manchester United’s matches with Real Madrid on July 23 in the United States, and within the frames of UEFA Super Cup in August, expressing his hope to finally meet Zidane.

Speaking about the most impressive playing field, Mkhitaryan named Dortmund’s home stadium, mentioning the unbelievable support from fans there.

Answering to the question on his “best buddy” in Manchester United, Henrikh did not name anyone. “We have a great atmosphere; we are like a family, so you do not single out anyone in your family.”

The Armenian footballer said that he would have probably become a lawyer, had he not chosen football. “The lawyers always wear good suits, that it why I guess this profession attracts me,” he joked.

By the way, superstar of American basketball LeBron James was the one to share the news about Mkhitaryan’s interview on his Facebook page. Mkhitaryan responded: “Hey LeBron James, I’m a big fan of everything you do, on and off the court.”

Sports: In One Shot: Arsen Julfalakyan’s silver and tears at London Olympics

MediaMax, Armenia

Greco-Roman wrestler Arsen Julfalakyan brought joy to Armenian fans on more than one occasion throughout his career. He won medals in World, European, Olympic competitions and took silver at 2012 London Olympics.

This edition of Mediamax Sport’s In One Shot series presents the moment Julfalakyan received his prize.

Reaching the finals and winning the silver in Olympics is a little like dying. Only one step is between you and the gold medal and the ultimate victory seems so close.

The match on 5 August 2012 was the most important final in Julfalakyan’s career. His opponent was Russian wrestler Roman Vlasov. The Armenian athlete did his best but could only get the silver.

He looked incredibly upset at the award ceremony and couldn’t hold back tears. Vlasov even whispered something to him while they were standing on the platform.

“I regret not winning the gold then, but I can do nothing about it. Vlasov told me on the platform that I was the strongest. I had special training for the Olympics and had a huge desire to win a medal. I can’t say what would be with me if I didn’t,” he said.

Cultural: The Story of a Silver Wreath: An Ethiopian Emperor, and an Armenian Jeweler

Armenian Weekly

Special for the Armenian Weekly

The Museum Resource Center in Washington D.C. hosted a reception on June 15 in honor of my father, Bedros Sevadjian, jeweler and silversmith “By Appointment to His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia” (see “Jeweler to an Emperor: Bedros A. Sevadjian (1918-1977)“).

There, at long last, we saw the beautiful silver wreath he had made for the Emperor in 1963. In October of that year, during a state visit to the United States, Haile Selassie I laid the unique silver wreath at the Lincoln Memorial, on the National Mall in Washington D.C., as a tribute to abolitionist U.S. president Abraham Lincoln.

A year ago, I was introduced to retired Marines Nanci and Eric Visser, who live in Alexandria, Va., outside Washington D.C. They had been posted to Ethiopia in the mid-’70s, and during that time they had formed a deep friendship with my father. The Vissers and I instantly formed a great rapport and bond.

Needless to say, my father was the subject of many conversations between us. In discussions about my father’s work, I mentioned the wreath that was somewhere in the possession of the U.S. government. Nanci immediately volunteered to look for it. Just a few days later, she confirmed that Eric had found it: It was stored at the Museum Resource Center.

Conservation details (Photo: Matt Andrea)

Not only that, but Museum Resource Center Director Bob Sonderman and Museum Curator of the National Mall and Memorial Parks Laura Andersen had immediately invited Nanci and Eric to visit and to see the wreath. Apparently, the silver was a bit tarnished and some of the leaves were bent, but otherwise it was fine. To my surprise and delight, Bob and Laura undertook to restore the wreath so that it could be readied for display in the future.

Of course, I very much wanted to see it for myself, as did my brother and sisters when I told them about it. I suggested we might all travel to Washington to see it, and then decided it would be great to hold a small reception so that others who were interested could also see it.

The project snowballed, and we eventually held our reception. His Imperial Highness Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie Haile Selassie, grandson of the Emperor, honored us with his presence. Friends came from Washington, New York, New Jersey, and Montreal; my cousin Ada Soaper flew in from Los Angeles, my brother Phillip from Hawaii, my sisters Jeanine and Anaïs and I from the U.K.

New friends and old friends came together to admire a remarkable work of art that is so important historically—a symbol of the longstanding ties between the United States and Ethiopia, as well as the ties that bind Ethiopians and the Armenians who were once an important part of their society.

The wreath itself exceeded all expectation. For although I had seen old black and white photos of it, I had no concept of the sheer size and beauty of it. Fully 580 Maria Theresa thalers were melted down to make it. It is about two and a half feet tall and weighs almost 14 kilograms. The wreath is in the form of two long stems of Ethiopian Tsegereda roses (Rosa Abyssinica), tied together at the base in a bow. A plaque bears an inscription in English and Amharic. In English, it reads as follows:

All men who cherish freedom and equality as the most precious of
God’s gifts owe a vast debt to Abraham Lincoln, whose life and deeds
Gave eloquent _expression_ to his belief that men of all races and creeds
Would one day live together in harmony and brotherhood. We express
Our admiration for this great man and pay tribute to him and to the
Principles for which he stood.

The wreath had been displayed for some time at the Lincoln Memorial after the Emperor’s visit, but eventually it was removed for safekeeping. It then disappeared from public consciousness as history took its course. The Kennedy assassination, the tumult of the Civil Rights Movement, and the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974 intervened, and the wreath became a memory, its image surfacing only in old newsreels.

This wonderful artifact has now been preserved and will be kept in top condition for years to come. We hope it will be displayed from time to time. It is an example of how different communities can come together to share a beautiful legacy.
