Expert: Russia’s weapons sale to Baku is unpleasant, not that important

news.am, Armenia

YEREVAN. – Russia as a sovereign state has right to sell weapons to any country, including Azerbaijan, Karabakh war veteran Gagik Danielyan believes.

Russia is well aware why Azerbaijan purchases so many weapons and where they plan to use it, he emphasized.

“This can lead to serious consequences, at the level of interstate relations,” he added.

At the same time, Danielyan expressed regret concerning Russian weapon sales to Baku, adding that Moscow has its own business interests.

For his part, chairman of Vahagn NGO, Karabakh war veteran Karapet Karapetyan believes the Armenian side has to be strong enough not to complain about the behavior of other parties.

Russia’s weapons sale to Baku is unpleasant, but this is not the most important fact for the Armenian side, Karapetyan said.

“What shall we do? Take offense at the Russians? We must act in a way so that Russians could respect us,” he added

BAKU: External forces won’t hinder strengthening of Baku-Moscow ties

Trend, Azerbaijan

17:59 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 22

By Elmira Tariverdiyeva – Trend:

Yesterday’s meeting between presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia, Ilham Aliyev and Vladimir Putin, in Sochi has once again confirmed the obvious postulate – no external forces can and will be able to hinder strengthening of relations between the two countries. This does not only have to do with Armenia but also certain Western forces who believe that Baku must be turned away from the policy of systematic building of strategic relations with the Kremlin.

This is not surprising as the question “Who Baku is friends with?” is becoming more and more topical for world powers. Over time, Azerbaijan has become an increasingly significant factor of global and regional politics, and this is due in no small part to the presence of internal political stability in the country, developing economy and Baku’s foreign policy. In other words, building relationships with such a strong, predictable and reliable partner is advantageous for everyone, and this is why, the desire to get Baku into one of the political camps is politically quite understandable.

However, the strengthening of strategic relations with Moscow has always been on the agenda of Baku, and therefore, that is unlikely to be changed. Especially, Yerevan, which has numerously tried to spoil Azerbaijani-Russian relations by complaining, whining and using hidden hints and open blackmail, will never manage to do this. Firstly, Moscow hardly listens to Armenia’s whining and secondly, it never fulfills Armenian requests and demands that are contrary to Russian national interests.

And the fact that strengthening of ties with Baku is in the interests of Moscow raises no doubts.

Modern relations between Azerbaijan and Russia represent an excellent example of a strategic partnership, when two countries have identical views on most key issues. Moreover, these relations are even stronger as they are based on mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Azerbaijan and Russia signed more than 200 interstate, intergovernmental and interregional agreements. In addition, there is an important economic factor – Russia is one of Azerbaijan’s main trading partners, and the development of mechanisms for regional cooperation in a trilateral format generally includes the two countries’ similar approaches to many issues.

By the way, the Russian language occupies a special place in the strengthening of relations between Baku and Moscow, as Azerbaijan, unlike neighboring states, treats with respect the preservation and development of the language in the country. This has the most positive impact on the life of the Russian diaspora in Azerbaijan. And, certainly, Baku trusts the Kremlin in the issue of mediation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement for a reason.

Based on Moscow’s actions, Baku pins certain hopes on Russia not only as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group for settling the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the country, which is geographically and historically closely connected with the South Caucasus, but also as a strategic partner with whom the relationship is time-tested.

Israeli political scientist: Erdoğan sometimes resembles an elderly hysteric woman

news.am, Armenia

The recent steps of Turkey towards Germany are apparently of blackmail nature.

Israeli political scientists, political figure Avigdor Eskin told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

In his words, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is known for his mean and non-diplomatic conduct, which is sometimes close to hysterics and even racket. “This way, Erdoğan “grabbed” $5 million dollars from the EU in exchange for stopping sending Syrian refugees to Europe. He will “heat” the atmosphere with Germany till the highest boiling point and then settle for a certain compromise in order to avoid sanctions and tough measures by Germany and EU,” Eskin stressed.

According to him, Turkey displays non-normative conduct in terms of accepted diplomatic ethics. “Erdoğan has never stood out for his courage. He is an impulsive person, who, however, always retreats, when smelling real danger. He sometimes resembles an elderly hysteric woman, who throws hysterics and then collects tribute from neighbors of the house for temporary silence,” Eskin noted.

Referring to the further membership of Turkey in NATO against the backdrop of escalation with Germany, the political scientist said: “Changes should not be expected yet. Erdoğan is not ready for absolute conflict.”

Earlier, German FM Sigmar Gabriel announced that the German Government aims to reconsider its course towards Turkey. The head of the agency noted that the conditions of providing loans and economic support to Turkey, as well as Berlin’s efforts towards preparing Ankara to joining the EU will be reconsidered. The German MFA will also toughen the security recommendations for Germans wishing to leave for Turkey. This decision has already been approved by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The reason behind this was the arrest of German human rights consultant Peter Steudtner. Five of his colleagues, including head of Turkish representation of Amnesty International İdil Eser, were detained together with him.

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 22

Trend:

The meeting of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as part of a working visit shows the trusting relations between the two countries’ leaders, Elkhan Alasgarov, head of Expert Council of the Baku International Policy and Security Network (Baku Network), told Trend July 22.

He made the remarks while commenting on the July 21 meeting of the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents in Sochi.

“Relations between the countries have strategic nature, and the fact of holding this meeting of the presidents in a confidential form gives reason to believe that topical regional and international issues were discussed,” noted Alasgarov.

Naturally, the issues of cooperation in the Caspian Sea, the legal status of the sea were considered, after all, the work on the Convention on the Caspian Sea’s status will be completed soon, said the expert.

Azerbaijan and Russia are linked by a lot of ties: the relations in the political sphere are at a high level, the two countries support each other on international platform, they have close economic, military, political ties and interests, added Alasgarov.

“Of course, consideration of settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is topical for Azerbaijan. Armenia in every possible way hinders the establishment of warm relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, however, the results of the visit indicate that all these efforts are vain and don’t work,” he noted.

The expert added that Russia and Azerbaijan are inclined to develop relations and the two countries’ leaders discussed the issues of deepening cooperation in all spheres, as well as within the framework of regional projects.

The visit took place at a time when the Russian-Turkish relations are developing, said Alasgarov.

Meanwhile, the relations in the formats Azerbaijan-Russia-Turkey, Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran, and, undoubtedly, the meeting of the two leaders will give positive results for the development of cooperation, added the expert.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
