Culture: “Vardavar” to be celebrated in Armenia on Sunday

Panorama, Armenia

On July 23, the Armenian Church will mark the day of Christ’s Transfiguration – Vardavar, which is one of the five cardinal feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Church the history of which comes from pagan times. In the Armenian Church, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated 98 days following Easter.

The fest is traditionally associated with water, love, beauty, fertility and Astghik – the goddess of beauty. On the day people offered her roses, flew doves into the sky and sprinkled water on each other. The tradition of pouring water has been preserved till our days.

Early in the morning everybody – both adults and children – familiar or unfamiliar people come out to the yard and spray each other with great amount of water. Thus, they remember the tradition of presenting roses and spraying water by Goddess Astghik. This holiday is not only a perfect way of being refreshed on a hot summer day but also it changes into a real holiday of water and entertainment when all around you can see many children in wet cloths but in good mood and happy. Besides, water of Vardavar considers to be healing, and everybody should get at least several drops of water during spraying each other.

The Monday following the Feast is a Memorial Day.

Germany Declared War on Turkey: Who’s Next?

The German foreign minister Zigmar Gabriel has announced about change in Germany’s attitude to Turkey. This decision was made after the meeting of Angela Merkel with the president of the Social Democratic Party Martin Shultz, Gabriel announced on July 20. That day may remain in history as the beginning of initiation of a new structure of the region of the Greater Near East. Germany may be followed by other countries, such as Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden which have recently banned the entry of Turkish ministers. And this process may end up in signing another “Treaty of Lausanne”.According to Gabriel, the conditions under which Germany provides loans and economic assistance to Turkey, as well as the EU support to prepare Turkey’s membership are going to be reviewed. Besides, the German ministry of foreign affairs has given a stronger warning to its citizens visiting Turkey on danger to their security. The relations with Turkey cannot be developed in the former way, Gabriel announced. A consequence of such change could be not only the refusal of the current level of cooperation but also sanctions on Turkey which may be a catastrophe for Ankara. Turkey lacks resources to tackle the sanctions. Note that recently the European Parliament has called on the European Commission to bring to a halt the negotiations with Turkey on its membership to the EU and support to reforms. And the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker announced that the doors of the EU will be closed to Turkey if Turkey restores the capital punishment. Besides, the international press writes that Turkey’s intention to buy C400 air defense systems from Russia and several other steps question its membership. Turkey seems to be provoking Germany and the European Union into a conflict to appear in a setting of a conflict which will favor itself the most. Turkey is not used to equal competitions and sustainable relations. Fighting, expansion, invasions is closer to its spirit. In fact, a process of an open German-Turkish conflict is starting which may end up in an open conflict between the west and Turkey. Apparently, the start of the conflict was June 2015 when Bundestag adopted the resolution on recognition of the Armenian genocide. Germany has declassified documents relating to the Genocide this year.

Armenian Eagles Foundation from USA supports bordering villages with business financing

Armenian Eagles Foundation from USA supports bordering villages with
business financing
YEREVAN, JULY 19, ARMENPRESS. A group of American-Armenian youth have
financed business programs in Armenia’s bordering regions.
After the 4-day War of April in 2016, the Armenian Eagles Foundation
came up with the idea to somehow support Armenia.
They discussed possible options of assistance and concluded that they
must provide families of the bordering communities with such
assistance which will enable them to work afterwards, take care of
themselves and make a living.
Andranik Baloyan, the Glendale-based founder of Armenian Eagles, told
ARMENPRESS they wanted to create an opportunity to work for the locals
of Armenia’s bordering villages.
“This will contribute for the villagers to stand firmly on their land,
to continue living on the border and support the soldiers. After all,
it is at the border where Armenia starts. In order to bring this idea
to life, we decided to cooperate with the Border NGO. Prior to this I
was aware to some extent about their activities. We contacted the
organization and began to work. We raised money in Glendale, and
financed the business ideas of the families of the bordering Baghanis
village”, Andranik Baloyan said.
Baloyan and Vahram Shalvardzyan, another member of the Armenian
Eagles, arrived in Armenia and visited the bordering villages of the
country to review the work on spot.
Anahit Nazaryan from the Border NGO said they are engaged in various
programs in Tavush’s bordering villages, ranging from agriculture to
culture and education. The main directions are villages on the
Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“We mostly work with families, we began the works by establishing
greenhouse businesses, implementing beekeeping programs, and now the
model of small family business support is in use. Small businesses are
being financed, which will provide the families with income”, Nazaryan
said.
The organization began works in the Berkaber community.
In Baghanis community, five business programs are being implemented
with the Armenian Eagles Foundation.
Currently a sewing workshop has been established, with the idea of a
young girl. Her business is operating successfully, she already has
orders. Service businesses have also been financed. Nazaryan said the
service businesses relate to land cultivation, since the bordering
villages have a problem in cultivation, since they are under fire.
“That’s why it is important for them to cultivate their lands. Lands
which are on slopes are difficult to be cultivated by the usual
mechanism. That’s why they have been provided with relevant
equipment”, she said.
Nazaryan said all business ideas are being assisted with equipment
only, they do not provide money. If the given person works properly,
then the equipment is donated to him.
Andranik Baloyan said they’ve just returned from Baghanis. “We are
very impressed, from talking to the villagers it became clear that
they have hope for tomorrow, that they can work and have their job.
Their excitement inspired us. We understand that if many such programs
exist the situation will change. Opportunity must be created for
working people”, he said.
Baloyan said they are planning to continue cooperation with Border NGO.
Upon returning to Glendale, they are planning to present the results there.

weapons, Armenian Finance Minister Vardan Aramyan said on Wednesday.
YEREVAN, July 19. /TASS/. Armenia is in talks with Russia on a new
loan to buy Russian-made weapons, Armenian Finance Minister Vardan
Aramyan said on Wednesday.
"Discussion of the issue of a new defense-related loan started with
Russia this year and will go along for quite a time," he said, adding
that the two countries had earlier reached a top-level agreement on
buying Russian-made defense-related products at Russia’s domestic
prices. "As a strategic partner, Russia agreed. Negotiations are now
underway," he noted.
According to the Armenian finance minister, his country is having such
talks only with Russia from among other countries of the Collective

avoid problems linked with the loan repayment," Aramyan said.
In his words, Armenia has not yet completely used the first export
loan of 200 million U.S. dollars meant to buy Russia-made
defense-related products. "We have 30 million U.S. dollars left," he
said.
The two countries signed an agreement on that loan on June 25, 2015.
It came into effect on February 10, 2016.
