Fuller Center Armenia builds 600th home with help of Christian Youth Mission to Armenia

For The Fuller Center for Housing of Armenia, each year seems to bring another milestone. That’s what happens when you’re the busiest Fuller Center partner in the world.

Earlier today, the Christian Youth Mission to Armenia (CYMA) helped mark the construction of the 600th Fuller Center home by working with our Armenian partners to help the Miinasyan family of Dvin Village in the Arara region build a simple, decent and safe new home.

Nearly three decades since a devastating earthquake struck the historic country, many families are still dealing with the lingering effects of that disaster and the collapse of the Soviet Union, which ruled the country at the time of the quake but soon fell apart, leaving many broken promises of rebuilding.

Until now, the Minasyan family has been living with family father Arsen’s parents and brothers with 16 members total crammed into one small house. Soon, they will be moving into this nearly complete home.

“The Fuller Center for Housing Armenia has crossed another milestone building their 600th house,” Fuller Center President David Snell said today. “This shows what can happen when a dedicated leadership team develops a phenomenal support base and gets to work! Congratulations to the Armenia staff and to all of the volunteers and donors who have made this possible.”

The Fuller Center of Armenia has a strong leadership team on the ground that has cultivated numerous partnerships to support its work. It also receives consistent support from Armenian-Americans and is a popular destination for Fuller Center Global Builders volunteer experiences.

“Fuller Center Armenia continues to show why they’re a leader among all the Fuller Centers around the world, constantly seeking and finding ways to partner with more and more families,” said Ryan Iafigliola, Fuller Center Director of Field Operations, who joined President Snell and others in Armenia last year for the international Millard Fuller Legacy Build shortly after Armenia dedicated its 500th home. “We’re so proud of all that they have accomplished.”

A volunteer’s perspective

Jackie El Chemmas recently returned from a Global Builders trip to Armenia with a group from her church, St. John Armenian Church of Greater Detroit. Volunteer groups from the church have built 21 of those 600 homes, including the milestone 500th home last year.

“They need the help, and I’m doing my part — my itsy-bitsy part — but we’re building a home every year,” she said, adding that the Armenian Fuller Center’s leadership makes the experience productive. “They’re fantastic. The whole setup is just fantastic. If there’s ever a problem, they handle it.”

She also sees how the week of serving others in their homeland makes her church stronger and builds faith — something church groups always report from such faith-in-action service opportunities in Armenia and elsewhere with The Fuller Center.

“It makes us stronger, and it makes them have a stronger sense of identity with other Armenians, she said. “We definitely have ties to our heritage, no doubt about it. When we go, we don’t feel like we’re in a strange place. It’s ours. We take ownership of Armenia.”

And those ties do not fade. In fact, she already has made plans for next year. Moments before she spoke with The Fuller Center today, El Chemmas said she received a call from a friend wanting to know about next year’s trip.

“She said, ‘I already have 12 people who want to go, so don’t take any more people with you next year,’” El Chemmas said with a laugh. “Plus, my husband will go, and one other person is going, so I’m already booked up for next year.

“The Fuller Center really does good, and we thank you.”

And The Fuller Center, of course, thanks all of the volunteers, supporters and leaders who make these success stories possible.

The World Swimming Championships have kicked off in Budapest, Hungary, with four swimmers representing Armenia in the tournament, the Armenian National Olympic Committee told Panorama.am.

According to the source, Armenian swimmer Ani Poghosyan clocked 59.27 sec in 100m freestyle event, breaking the record set by young Armenian swimmer Varsenik Manucharyan at the 14th European Youth Olympic Summer Festival (EYOF) a few days ago.

Ani Poghosyan and Artur Barseghyan, a EYOF participant, have also been qualified for Class B of the Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games.

L’équipe d’Arménie de basket (-16 ans) a battu l’Azerbaïdjan 88-76 et dispute ce soir la finale de division C européenne

A Andorre, l’équipe d’Arménie de basket des cadets (-16 ans) est parvenue en finale du de division C européenne. L’Arménie a battu l’Azerbaïdjan samedi 29 juillet sur le score de 88-76.

Le joueur Arménien Georgui Chakhnazarov a marqué à lui seul 36 points. L’Arménie sera affrontera en finale aujourd’hui 30 juin, le vainqueur du match Andorre-Gibraltar. Saluons l’Arménie qui s’est imposée sur l’Azerbaïdjan avec 12 points d’écart et souhaitons bonne chance à nos jeunes basketteurs de l’équipe d’Arménie des -16 ans pour cette finale d’aujourd’hui.

ANDORRA LA VELLA (FIBA U16 European Championship 2017, Division C) – Armenia and Gibraltar opened up the tournament with a Group A duel. The same teams will play the very last game, facing off in the Final.

Armenia overturned a 15-point deficit to hand Azerbaijan an 88-76 defeat in the Semi-Finals. A massive 34-16 fourth quarter was the key, as Georgii Shakhnazarov exploded for 36 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Nikita Galtsev was equally impressive, a 16-point, 19-rebound double-double, with 5 blocks to his name.

Aleksey Chizhenok contributed with 12 points and 14 boards, and Mikia Avedian was the last man in double digits with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Papuna Kirtadze’s 35-point performance went to waste for Azerbaijan, who will play the Third-Place Game on the final day of competition.

The other Semi-Final was a much closer encounter, with no double digit lead for either team. Gibraltar closed the door on Andorra in the final stanza, holding the hosts to just 10 fourth-quarter points en route to a 61-56 win.

Alejandro Garcia Tejon led Gibraltar with 24 points and 21 rebounds. Rafael Aradas Garces shot 7-of-11 to finish with 16 points and a team-high four steals, while Mohamed El Yettefti had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side.

When the finalists met for the first time in Group A, Armenia took home a 66-59 win.

In the Classification Games, Monaco defeated Moldova 98-59, and Albania beat Wales 58-47. The stage is set for the final day – Malta and San Marino open up the program with a battle for 9th spot, followed by Moldova and Wales in their 7th place game. Monaco and Albania are dueling for fifth. Azerbaijan and Andorra will decide who are the final podium spot owners, and Armenia and Gibraltar take the court in the Final at 19:15 CET.

Le championnat 2017 de bodybuilding Franco Columbu s’est déroulé du 16 au 18 juin au Théâtre Massimo de Cagliari en Sardaigne. Lors de ces compétitions internationales, une arménienne est montée sur le podium dans la catégorie « Miss Bikini ».

Blancpain Endurance Series – 2e manche

Le pilote libanais avait remporté, à Monza en Italie, la première manche de la célèbre compétition automobile.

Le pilote libanais Alex Démirdjian remet son casque et court de nouveau sur les circuits où il s’était tant distingué durant cette saison, lors de la célèbre Blancpain Endurance Series, qu’il avait entamée de manière exceptionnelle en remportant la victoire lors de la première manche, qui s’était déroulée sur le circuit italien de Monza.

Cette fois, c’est sur le circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, en Belgique, qu’il disputera la célèbre course des 24 Heures au volant d’une Ferrari 488 GT3, affiliée à l’écurie AF Corse (Ferrari). Lors de cette course, la voiture de Démirdjian portera les couleurs du Liban et de l’Arménie, sous le slogan Drive for Life. Une démarche exceptionnelle qui s’inscrit dans la continuité de la campagne nationale qu’il avait lancée et qui avait propulsé le Liban au-devant de la scène mondiale.

Cette nouvelle campagne ne fait que renforcer les liens entre le Liban et les pays avec lesquels il entretient de profondes relations historiques. Pour cette raison, Démirdjian a choisi l’ancien pilote français de F1 Nicolas Minassian, d’origine arménienne lui aussi, comme coéquipier. Seront également de l’aventure le pilote finlandais Toni Vilander, qui détient le record de rapidité des voitures Ferrari GT et représentant officiel de la marque italienne, ainsi que le pilote italien Davide Rizzo, qui était le coéquipier de Démirdjian lors de sa grande victoire à Monza. L’équipe est en compétition dans la catégorie Pro-AM, qui regroupe un grand nombre de pilotes d’expérience. Elle possède de sérieuses chances de réaliser des résultats positifs et aspire à se retrouver sur le podium à l’issue de cette course, qui débutera aujourd’hui pour s’achever demain après-midi.

 

Message de vie
Ce n’est pas la première fois qu’Alex Démirdjian dispute les 24 Heures de Spa : il y a trois ans, il avait participé à cette course au volant d’une McLaren. Fort donc de son expérience du circuit, il a désormais plus de chance de remporter la victoire en raison de la constitution solide de l’écurie AF Corse, acclamée comme la meilleure dans ce domaine.

Commentant cet événement tant attendu, Alex Démirdjian nous a confié : « Nous voilà devant un nouveau défi, porteurs d’un nouveau message national. Les couleurs de la voiture ont été légèrement modifiées, cependant notre ambition de porter le Liban au-devant de la scène internationale n’a jamais changé. Comme vous le constaterez, nous serons aux commandes d’une voiture qui portera deux drapeaux et un message de vie. Les liens forts entre l’Arménie et le Liban représentent l’esprit paisible et harmonieux dans lequel ces deux peuples cohabitent. » Et d’ajouter : « Après notre victoire à Monza, nous avons décidé, mon équipe et moi-même, de passer à la catégorie supérieure, la Pro-AM, lors de la course de Spa-Francorchamps. C’est un long circuit et tout peut arriver. Mais notre stratégie est solide et notre but est de nous retrouver sur la plus haute marche du podium. » En conclusion, il précise : « C’est la seconde fois que je participe à cette course, mais être au volant d’une Ferrari change toute la donne. Je suis donc impatient de voir le feu vert du départ s’allumer samedi ! J’ai un bon pressentiment envers l’équipe et la voiture. Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps ensemble et nous sommes familiers avec tous les éléments qui nous permettront d’arriver à la victoire. »

Krikor Amirzayan récompensé par l’Arménie pour la « Défense de la langue arménienne »

Le 7 juillet à Erévan, le ministère arménien de la Diaspora a décerné des prix pour la « Défense de la langue arménienne » à des personnalités arméniennes de la diaspora pour leur action en faveur de l’Arménie et de l’arménité. Cette initiative du ministère arménien de la Diaspora était soutenue par le Congrès Arménien Mondial et l’Union des Arméniens de Russie.

Pour son engagement associatif en France (président de l’association « Arménia », coprésident du C24 Comité du 24 Avril Drôme-Ardèche) ainsi que ses milliers d’articles et caricatures liés à la diffusion de l’information arménienne d’Arménie et de l’Artsakh, Krikor Amirzayan -qui avait été honoré en 2014 de la médaille d’Or du Ministère de la diaspora, la plus haute distinction de ce ministère- a reçu le Premier Prix pour la « Défense de la langue arménienne ». Outre Krikor Amirzayan, quatre Arméniens de la diaspora ont été honorés de ce prix. Il s’agit de Vahik Satoorian (Etats-Unis), Aelita Mirakyan (Russie), Suren Bayramian (Egypte) et Vachagan Rstakyan (Géorgie).

Krikor Amirzayan se rendra en Arménie où du 18 au 20 septembre il prendra part à Erévan à la 6ème conférence Arménie-Diaspora.

US sanctions against Russia will ‘hamper’ Armenia’s economy

The US Senate has decided to impose economic sanctions against Russia. How will those affect Armenia, since Russian is one of the main partners of Armenia, and a member of the EAEU? Answering the journalists’ question, politician Stepan Grigoryan said, that formally, the restrictions are not against the EAEU, but if Russia’s economy is going to further regress, as most of the restrictions refer to not providing new technologies to Russia, of course, it will also affect the economy of Armenia.

The politician draws attention to the fact that the EU is against the US sanctions on Russia too, particularly Germany, as the restriction on technology transfer to Russia will directly affect the German economy.

“I’m not a specialist, to tell in detail what impact this will have on the Armenian economy, but we cannot trade freely with Iran, Georgia and the EU, as we are a member of the EAEU, so these products will be taxed”, said the politician.

In response to the question of Aravot.am: the EU agreement is scheduled to be signed in November. The Armenian authorities, like in 2013, promise that the agreement will be signed, it’s clear that Russia will not “sit in idleness”, what developments are expected? Stepan Grigoryan noticed, that, first, the new framework agreement does not hinder the commitments undertaken within the EAEU, then, if Armenia for the second time withdraws from its commitment and does not sign its initial agreement, it will seriously spoil the image of the country.

Armenia liberalizing domestic electric energy market

YEREVAN, July 28. /ARKA/. On Thursday, the Armenian government gave its approval to the package of the measures to be taken to liberalize the domestic electricity market and to spur the development of interstate trade. 

Ashot Manukyan, Armenian minister of energy infrastructures and natural resources, said the necessity of transition to a new modern energy market is due to demand at the domestic market and the opportunity to use the organization of trans-border electricity trade.     

Since Armenia declared its independence in 1991, he said, it has been remaining stuck to the market liberalization principle, and now only electric energy market remains not liberalized.

Armenia must determine extent of cooperation with West: U.S., UK

PanARMENIAN.Net – Ambassadors of the United States and the United Kingdom to Armenia believe that Yerevan should determine itself to what extent it wants to deepen relations with the West.

“A CSTO member, Armenia is closely cooperating with the United States and NATO,” RFE/RL Armenian Service cited U.S. ambassador Richard M. Mills as saying.

“It is important for Armenia to make its own decision as to whom it wants to cooperate with in security and defense sectors.”

According to Mills, Yerevan’s political and military ties with Moscow are no obstacle to its cooperation with the U.S.

Mills, British ambassador Judith Margaret Farnworth and minister of emergency situations Davit Tonoyan were participating in military drills, held by the armies of the three countries.

Farnworth too agreed that Armenia is the one to decide the extent of its cooperation with the West.
