ANKARA:Four released in Hrant Dink murder trial

Daily Sabah, Turkey

Aug 3 2017

n Istanbul court Thursday ordered the release of four men, all gendarmerie officers, in a trial into the 2007 murder of prominent Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink. The officials were arrested as part of an investigation into controversial images of the murderer, Ogün Samast, posing with gendarmes.

Atilla Güçlüoğlu, Murat Bayrak, Birol Ustaoğlu and Yüksel Avan were officers at a gendarmerie headquarters in the northern city of Samsun where Samast, then 17 years old, went after assassinating Dink in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007. Soon after, Samast was taken into custody in Samsun and media outlets released images of the murderer posing with the gendarmes while holding a Turkish flag. The images caused outrage as both the gendarmes and Samast apparently boasted about the murder which was then blamed on having nationalist motives.

The court said in its verdict that the defendants had no links to the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), whose infiltrators in the police and judiciary are accused of covering up intelligence on the murder, and that their testimony showed they did not intend to portray Samast as a nationalist hero. The defendants had claimed they were ordered by their superiors to give the flag to Samast while they were simply taking photos to “make the gendarmerie unit’s success in aiding the capture of Samast evident.” The hearing was adjourned to October.

Eighty-five defendants are being tried in the case, including 10 who remain at large, and 25 defendants who have been jailed pending trial. FETÖ leader Fetullah Gülen, fugitive FETÖ-linked prosecutor Zekeriya Öz and former police chiefs linked to the terrorist group are among the defendants.

FETÖ used the murder to “incite chaos” in Turkey, where the thorny Armenian genocide issue strains Turkish-Armenian relations, according to prosecutors. FETÖ supporters had blamed several prominent figures from military officers to academics of having a role in the murder, and tried to tie it to Ergenekon, a gang concocted by FETÖ-linked prosecutors to imprison its critics.

BAKU: Russian historian-scientist summoned to Investigative Committee on basis of Armenian claims

APA, Azerbaijan

Aug 3 2017
The author of numerous scientific investigations which revealed forgeries of the Armenian history, historian-scientist Oleg Kuznetsov was summoned to the Investigative Committee on the claims which were raised against him by Armenians, Oleg Kuznetsov told APA’s correspondent in Russia.

Kuznetsov is summoned to the Office of the Western Administration of the Investigation Committee in Moscow city within the framework of Armenians’ claim on the monograph “Transnational Armenian Terrorism in the Twentieth Century” on August 4.

“I will be interrogated by the special investigator of the Office of the Western Administration of the Investigation Committee in Moscow city, Andrei Alekseyevich Berlyov. According to the investigator, the group of Armenian citizens has an application about my monograph “The history of transnational Armenian terrorism in the twentieth century” to verify that whether or not there is a violation of Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement to national hatred). I know about this application for a long time. One of the journalists from Moscow told about it to me last Thursday. Such an invitation to conduct an interrogation is entirely legitimate, and it complies with the provisions of the Russian Criminal Procedure Code, which regulates the activities of law enforcement officials,” Kuznetsov said.

Kuznetsov emphasized that everything is legal from formal and legal point of view: “However I do not know how the situation will develop in the Investigative Committee, so I decided to get support from Moscow’s well-known lawyer, Elmar Pashayev. He will be with me during an interview with the investigator. I will be ready to answer the questions of the investigator on Friday,” Kuznetsov added.

The book “The history of transnational Armenian terrorism in the twentieth century” has been written on the basis of materials from USSR’s Committee of State Security and US Central Intelligence Agency, and criminal cases about crimes committed by Armenians in Azerbaijan and Russia.

BAKU: US asking price of Armenia, however, is Russia ready to sell it?

Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan

Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 3

By Elmira Tariverdiyeva – Trend:

After getting acquainted with some recent events and statements, it seems that the US is asking the price of Armenia, trying to reduce not only Russia’s political but also financial influence on Yerevan.

As the Russia-US relations are not so good today, while the Armenia-NATO and the Armenia-West relations, on the contrary, are flourishing, Moscow seems to have something to worry about.

“The Armenia-US economic relations have great potential,” former US ambassador to Armenia John Heffern has recently said.

Heffern said that instead of humanitarian aid, the US intends to develop the trade and economic relations with Armenia, Voice of America reported.

The former US ambassador also added that the US-Armenia trade and investment framework agreement, signed in May 2015, has been already facilitating the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries.

It is clear that there is no real potential for the US relations with a small and poor Armenia. However, it seems that the West has recently decided to outbid Armenia as Yerevan’s relations with Moscow have recently cracked.

The fact that Armenia is dealing with NATO behind Moscow’s back became evident after the trainings in Romania, which Moscow perceived negatively.

Moscow regards holding of such large exercises as a deliberate attempt to influence the geopolitical situation in the region. The participation of the main ally in the South Caucasus in those trainings testifies to the disorder in the Russia-Armenia relations.

Moreover, the US officials also send unambiguous messages to Yerevan, promising it treasure if it escapes the influence of Moscow.

US Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills urged Yerevan in late July to make its own decisions concerning the country’s national interests.

“Armenia may have strong defense ties with both the US and Russia, but it is important for Armenia to make its own decisions on these issues,” Mills told reporters.

Mills’s statement was made immediately after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on ratification of the agreement on combined group of forces with Armenia.

The US plans to beat Russia in the energy field, which is strategically important for Armenia, which has no own energy resources.

The US and Western countries, realizing that they have missed a lot on the Armenian energy market, which makes it politically and economically even more loyal to Russia, are now trying to make Yerevan an offer from which it will be unable to refuse.

“The promises were made at a renewable energy conference in Yerevan, which was attended by seven US companies in May 2017, that the US companies are ready to invest up to $8 billion in Armenia’s power engineering,” Mills said at the conference.

As a condition for investment, Mills mentioned appropriate guarantees from the government.

One can guess about the guarantees. Today 82 percent of Armenia’s power engineering belongs to Russia, namely, the leading energy enterprises – Gazprom-Armenia, Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant, Electric Networks of Armenia, Sevan-Hrazdan Cascade including 7 HPPs.

The US and the West are displeased with such a situation as it is very convenient to manipulate Yerevan due to its dependence on energy.

However, will Russia agree to sell its outpost in the South Caucasus? Will Russia continue to invest money in the energy sector to eclipse the US tempting offers?

TEHRAN – The Hafez Association in the Armenian capital of Yerevan organized a meeting of its learners of the Persian language on Tuesday.

A group of Iranian MPs and diplomats, and some Armenian cultural officials also attended the meeting, the Iranian reported on Wednesday.

“One of Iran’s main concern is to stimulate the development of the Persian language in Armenia,” Iranian Ambassador Seyyed Kazem Sajjadi said at the meeting.

He said that the Iranian Embassy has received numerous requests from Armenian officials to organize Persian language courses in Armenia.

“The embassy has helped establish some educational centers for the Persian language, but due to the lack of funds, the embassy could not meet all the requests,” he added.

George Ebrahimi, the director of the Hafez Association, thanked Sajjadi for organizing a tour of Iranian cities for the students of the center.

The association is a non-governmental organization that was established in 2015 to promote the Persian language in Armenian schools and academic centers.

The director of the Education and Research Committee of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad-Mehdi Zahedi, said that development of the Persian language in Armenia can help the cultural relations between the two countries expand.

He also added that the students can play a key role in the expansion of ties in cultural areas as well as in political and economic fields.

Turkish Parliament’s Human Rights Commission head denied allegations on Wednesday that toilets had been constructed at an Armenian cemetery.

Mustafa Yeneroglu, a lawmaker from the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, called the allegations “a bid by the separatist terrorist organization [PKK] aimed at manipulating the international perception and inciting the Armenian people”.

In a statement, he said: “The artificial claims targets Turkey’s international reputation as well as our peace and unity.”

He said that the mentioned site of newly-opened public beach at Edremit district in eastern Van province already had a primary school, lodgings and toilets — all of which were closed until recently.

“These areas have been cleaned and opened to service to contribute to the city’s social life. So, ‘any new construction’ as claimed by some media outlets is out of question.”

Yeneroglu also refuted the allegations that buried bones had scattered across the area when the beach was opened for public this July, as the cemetery in the region had already been moved in the past.

Art: National Gallery of Armenia to host exhibition dedicated to Aivazovsky’s 200th anniversary

Panorama, Armenia

Aug 2 2017

An exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of prominent Russian-Armenian seascape artist Hovhannes (Ivan) Aivazovsky is set to launch at the National Gallery of Armenia on 15 September, the Gallery administration told Panorama.am.

Earlier, speaking to Panorama.am, Arman Tsaturyan, Director of the National Gallery of Armenia, unveiled plans to organize great events dedicated to the artist’s 200th birthday anniversary, expecting increased interest by both the society and the media outlets.

“We intend to exhibit those works by Aivazovsky which have not been displayed previously. Thus, the exhibition features not only the paintings on permanent display, but also the works kept at the funds of the National Gallery of Armenia,” the director said, adding that  due to the efforts of Armenia’s Minister of Culture Armen Amiryan and the museum famous painting “Chaos” by Hovhannes Aivazovsky kept at Mkhitarian Congregation in Venice has been transferred to Armenia to enter into the exhibition

To note, the 200th birthday anniversary of the prominent marine artist was put on UNESCO Anniversaries 2017.

Ivan (Hovhannes) Aivazovsky (born July 29, 1817 – died May 5, 1900), also known as Haivazovskiy, was a Russian painter of Armenian descent, most famous for his seascapes, which constitute more than half of his paintings. Aivazovskiy was born to a poor Armenian family in the city of Theodosia in the Crimea.

At the age of twenty, he graduates from the Art Academy of St. Petersburg with a gold medal. He goes to Italy to continue his studies and returns as an internationally acclaimed seascape painter. Neither financial security nor life in Palace interests him. He returns to his native land, builds a workplace on the seashore and, until the last days of his life, dedicates himself to the work that he loves. He participates in exhibitions all over the world.

Israeli Minister in Armenia: Damage Control or Something More?

Armenia-Israeli relations have been somewhat distant by the latter’s strong ties with Yerevan’s two biggest foes, Azerbaijan and Turkey. But a senior Israeli official has visited Yerevan amid signs that the politics of the Caucasus in Jerusalem may be shifting.

Tsachi Hanegbi, Israel’s Minister for Regional Cooperation, visited Armenia on July 25-26, for talks with senior Armenian officials. Hanegbi is a key figure in prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party and has held various ministerial positions for the past two decades. Hanegbi said that his visit was intended as a “breakthrough” in relations to make Armenia-Israeli “friendship mutually beneficial in many fields.” It was the first visit by a senior Israeli official to Armenia since 2012.

Relations with Israel have remained distant since Armenia gained independence in 1991, as Jerusalem has prioritized its ties to Turkey and, more recently, Azerbaijan. As early as the 1990s, pro-Israel groups in Washington aided Turkish and Azerbaijani governments in lobbying battles with the Armenian American community, just as Ankara and Baku reached out to Israel for security cooperation. And although Israeli-Turkish relations have soured somewhat under the rule of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Azerbaijan has become the main supplier of crude oil to Israel and has spent billions on Israeli weaponry.

Israeli-supplied arms played a critical role in last year’s “April war” between Armenia and Azerbaijan. After Azerbaijan took several frontline posts in a surprise attack on April 2, 2016, Armenian forces undertook a counteroffensive two days later. But Israeli-supplied Harop suicide drones and Spike anti-tank missiles helped Azerbaijani forces thwart that counterattack. As it happened, an Israeli parliamentary delegation was in Yerevan that same day. Knesset deputy speaker Tali Ploskov, who headed the delegation, reportedly “strongly condemned” the Azerbaijani attack in Karabakh and called for return to the ceasefire.

In subsequent days, Armenian ambassador Armen Melkonyan delivered a formal protest to Israel over the weapons. Another Knesset member, Zehava Gal-On from the opposition Meretz party, called for a halt to Israeli weapons sales to Azerbaijan. Gal-On also claimed that a key proponent of relations with Azerbaijani, current defense minister Avigdor Lieberman, acted as a “foreign agent” on Baku’s behalf and benefited financially from the relationship.

While Israeli leftists, particularly the late Meretz leader Yossi Sarid, have long sympathized with Armenians, centrist and right-wing politicians have been more distant. That has been changing somewhat. Since 2013, the speaker of the Knesset has been Likud’s Yuli Edelstein, who supports recognition of the Armenian genocide. Since 2015, Ze’ev Elkin, who also supported Armenian issues in the Knesset, has emerged as a key figure in the Netanyahu cabinet. In April of that year, the Likud delegated Knesset member Anat Berko to events marking the genocide centenary in Yerevan. And this year, a controversial right-wing figure Avigdor Eskin, who had previously been sympathetic to Azerbaijan, made a surprise visit to Nagorno Karabakh.

Hanegbi also has been a key Israeli interlocutor in contacts with Azerbaijan, meeting Azerbaijan’s deputy foreign minister and a delegation of parliament members on their visits to Israel last year. While in Yerevan he refused to answer questions about weapons sales to Azerbaijan, saying that his “trip is concentrated on positive sides of enhancing the relationship between our countries.”

It remains to be seen if Israel is in fact seeking to strike a more balanced relationship with Armenia or if the talks were merely damage control. According to the Armenian government’s press release, in a meeting with Hanegbi Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan identified information technology, agriculture, healthcare and science as areas where Armenia was eager to study Israel’s experience and find areas of cooperation.

Following Hanegbi’s meeting with foreign minister Eduard Nalbandyan, the latter’s deputy Shavarsh Kocharyan said that “real steps” were being taken to establish closer ties. Asked about Israel’s weapons sales to Azerbaijan, Kocharyan suggested that Israel was ready to sell weapons to Armenia as well.

YEREVAN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) — A gunman opened fire at a funeral on Tuesday in Armenia, killing four people and wounding six others, the Health Ministry said.

The shootout broke out in the Yazidi-populated village of Shamiram, in the northeastern province of Aragatsotn, which has rarely seen such crimes.

The gunman, who is still at large, was motivated by personal grievances, police said, adding that a manhunt is underway in the area.
