Expert: Armenia is among leaders according to cancer mortality
YEREVAN. – Armenia is among leaders according to cancer mortality, environmentalist and former Minister of Nature Preservation of Armenia, Karine Danielyan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am.
In her words, when the World Health Organization (WHO) published information according to which Armenia was on the lead, the Ministry of Health stated that the conclusion was based on wrong data. “Well, I took the data of the Ministry of Health. We turned out to be between first and second places, which is not good either. But this depends on how we count. If we count for a 3 million population, we again come first. This year we rank the second after Zambia according to the WHO data. Nobody is concerned about this and asks what’s wrong. When I am raising an issue, I am told that the WHO is wrong and that everything is fine in our country, there being no need to raise such bad issues. I think, first of all, the environment is to be blamed for,” Danielyan noted.
According to the environmentalist, lots of studies were conducted on the impact of the environment and climate change on the health of children. “Obviously, the most polluted territories were observed–territories polluted with heavy metals. The interconnection between the environment and health can be clearly seen. Town of Lori ranks first, being followed by Syunik and Yerevan,” she added.

Environmentalist: Armenia needs environmental police
The environmental culture is very weakly expressed in Armenia, environmentalist and former Minister of Nature Preservation of Armenia, Karine Danielyan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am.
In her words, environmental education is very important from that standpoint. “That is our constant struggle with the Ministry of Education, which sees no special need in this,” the expert added.
According to Danielyan, creation of an environmental policy would favor Armenia. In this connection, she recalled her experience of work as a Deputy Mayor and establishment of such a subunit upon her initiative during that period.
“The humanity has entered a stage, when the planet suffers harm due to its activity. Each year is announced as record-breaking by its warmth, cold, extreme weather phenomena and anomalies. The number of disasters is growing each year, causing greater economic harm and casualties. But the humanity—I’m not talking about experts—doesn’t understand what is going on,” the expert noted.
In her words, on this occasion the UN Secretary-General has sent a letter to the leaders of all countries, in which it is stressed that each citizen should know about the principles and objectives of sustainable development and take part in these processes. Thus, it is necessary to pay more attention to the education, she added.
State Senator Backs Armenian Group’s Call for Glendale Mall to Allow Billboard Advertising Documentary on Genocide
After the Americana at Brand rejected billboard space for a film about genocide, state Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has joined a local Armenian group in asking mall officials to reverse their decision.
Last week, the Glendale chapter of the Armenian National Committee of America requested that the Americana reconsider its denial of billboard space for “Architects of Denial,” a documentary that examines genocides, including the Armenian genocide, through survivor accounts.
In a statement on Thursday, Portantino said he supported the committee’s request.
“I thought to myself that Hollywood has long-celebrated thought-provoking and hard-edged filmmaking that stimulates conversations about historical events,” Portantino said. “It seems like labeling art as ‘too political’ was an odd reason to deny the appropriate free _expression_ of a historical documentary.”
Environmentalist: It is necessary to save Armenia’s Lake Parz
YEREVAN. – The situation round Lake Parz is an indication of what should not be, environmentalist and former Minister of Nature Preservation of Armenia, Karine Danielyan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am.
“Look at how it is called (‘parz’ in Armenian means ‘pure’) and how it looks now! In my student years we went to the lake to pass our internship. It was apparent then that the lake received its name not coincidentally: it was indeed pure and transparent. The water was absolutely transparent. The sky and the forest were reflected in it. You could see yourself like in the mirror,” Danielyan said.
According to the environmentalist, the lake should be used but without causing harm to it. The increase in the amount of seaweed in the lake is the first stage of bogging-up. “This happens because of the saturation of the lake with various organic compounds, which contribute to the growth of seaweed,” she noted.

Sports: Madoian Returns to Armenian National Team
Saturday
My Summer Experience: Madoian Returns to Armenian National Team
Providence: Johnson & Wales University has issued the following news release:
Last summer, Johnson & Wales University junior Matt Madoian had the opportunity to play in the FIBA U20 European championships for Armenia. He returned to play with the U20 team this summer as well as the men’s national team.
A native of North Kingstown, R.I., Madoian is eligible to play for Armenia because his paternal grandfather, John Madoian, was born in Armenia. For the second year in a row, the team went 3-3 and finish 17th, but this year scored a major victory for the country.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been embroiled in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since the late 1980s. While a cease fire was reached in 1994, over the last few years there has been increased fighting, including a major clash in 2016.
Before the first basket was made, the two basketball teams came face-to-face as they were assigned to the same hotel in the host city of Oradea, Romania. Despite an effort by both countries, the two teams were forced to stay in the same hotel for the duration of the tournament. As fate would have it, the two teams ended up meeting on the basketball court during the classification round.
“That game meant more to our team than a gold medal,” Madoian said. “Everything got tense from the time we found out we had to play them. We all felt that this game was for the people of Armenia and it would be a huge victory for those who have lost their lives and loved ones. I got goosebumps when they played the Armenian national anthem before the game because I know how much it meant to our country.”
An already intense game was amped up even more as Armenia gave up a 15-point lead then rallied in the fourth quarter for an 82-80 victory. Madoian scored a team-high 20 points and handed out a game-high eight assists.
When the final buzzer sounded there was great joy on the part of the Armenian team. The head of the delegation jumped into the head coach’s arms and Haykaz Grigorian, the lone player on the team who was born in Armenia, was crying and hugging his teammates. After the tournament, Grigorian will serve in the Armenian army and once again clash with Azerbaijan, but this time the stakes are much higher.

Of the 10-man roster, seven are from the United States, but have Armenian heritage. Many of them were on the team during the 2016 FIBA Championships. Madoian flew over to Armenia with Michael Hagopian, who is going into his junior year at Suffolk.
To get ready for the games, the team spent four weeks in training camp at Yerevan, Armenia. Madoian said language barrier caused some issues on the court, but away from basketball the team came together very quickly and have become life-long friends. One person Madoian particularly grew close to was Grigorian.
“Even though I don’t speak Armenian and he doesn’t speak much English, he was awesome to be around,” Madoian said. “He’s funny, energetic and just a caring guy that never fails to make you laugh. Coming from where Haykaz comes from, it felt like there was so much bottled up inside him and that being with us allowed him to let it out and make the trip memorable.”
Selected as team captain, Madoian was third on the squad at 12.7 points per game – a five-point increase from a year ago – while averaging 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He was the tournament’s top three-point shooter at 56 percent.
Madoian is currently in Armenia where he has joined the men’s national team for the World Cup qualifying round. Armenia is currently 2-1 after its first round of games against Bosnia, Sweden and Slovakia and will play each country one more time during pool play.
When he returns to campus this fall, Madoian will try to lead the Wildcats back to the GNAC Championship. Last year he was fifth on the team at 7.6 ppg and shot 39.8 percent from behind the arc.
