Supreme Commander-in-Chief of RA Armed Forces, President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan joined today the country’s top leadership to attend the graduation ceremony of 2016-2017 academic year graduates of military-educational institutions at Sardarapat memorial complex.

As the press department at the President’s Office reported, the President welcomed the participants, congratulated the graduates of military-educational institutions on the graduation ceremony, wishing them good service and every success.

In accordance with the order signed by the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, 279 graduates have been awarded the first commissioned officer title of Lieutenant. Within the framework of the event, the graduates of military educational institutions received their graduation documents and daggers, which were handed in by the President of the Republic and the National Security Council members. The President of Armenia delivered a speech on that occasion.

The event ended with a farewell ceremony to combat flags and a ceremonious military march.

Below is the statement by President Serzh Sargsyan in its entirety at the graduation ceremony of 2016-2017 academic year graduates of military-educational institutions

“Dear Graduates,

Dear Servicemen,

I sincerely congratulate you on completion of this important stage in your life. You have successfully completed your studies and will depart from here to serve your dedicated mission.

You will be at the frontline, at the military units, at the headquarters and in the rear. Wherever you may go, you will assume the role of a commander followed by our courageous soldiers.

I have no doubt that first of all you will be exacting with yourself that will entitle you to be as much exacting towards your subordinates who are supposed to follow your example, your moral image. You will become a family member, elder brother and a counselor for them.

I am confident that either your superiors will act as such senior brothers and experienced advisors. They have already passed that same path. They should help you avoid the mistakes they have made, they must rely on and support you.

The Armenian army is just such a large family. Our country is just such a large family. Movses Khorenatsi used to say, “We are a small nation.” Yes, we are small, yet powerful, strong with unity characteristics of a [powerful nation and family.

We must remember that the primary meaning of the word “nation” is family and dynasty. The purpose of your service is to ensure the safety and peace of your family, your dynasty, your nation.

Dear Servicemen,
he “One for all and all for one” slogan is at the heart of our armed forces, which became the people’s army uniting the countrymen and the writers, the drivers and the software developers, the jewelers and the musicians. It was just that national effort that defended Artsakh and continues to guarantee its security.

The military service brings up a new type of Armenian citizen – firmly standing on the ground, confident in their strength, supporting their companions, confident about the strength of the rear. This type is brought up by your parents in the family, and the same will be handed down to your children. This type is trained in our schools, learning from teachers to distinguish between good and bad, good, evil, and injustice.

On these positive values and freedom we build our country, defend our cause and our land. That is why we won in the battlefield and are strong in our positions. Dear servicemen, you are just the leaders in those positions: you are the guardians of our frontiers.

The staff of commissioned officers of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia features a new type of Armenian intellectuals thanks to Armenia’s independent statehood. And our State will do its utmost to solve the problems of its glorious soldiers.

Here, where the spirit of the Sardarapat heroes flies, we all have to understand the burden of historical responsibility that we have on our shoulders. It is not only the security of today’s Armenia, but also the responsibility to ensure the continuity of our statehood.

Dear Graduates,

Dear Servicemen,

Reiterating my congratulations, I wish you all good service and great achievements that will undoubtedly be the success of the whole nation.

Thank you.”

Azerbaijan outraged over the sale of Kim Kardashian lipstick sale in Baku

Public Radio of Armenia

Azerbaijan has detected something of a national security breach. And this time it comes via a lipstick collection carrying Armenian-American television star Kim Kardashian West’s brand name (KKW) and sold to unsuspecting Azerbaijanis, EurasiaNet.org writes.

For Azerbaijan any product with an ethnic Armenian connection, whether a lipstick or a rifle, can be considered an enemy operation. “You put a little bit of Kim Kardashian West (KKW) on your lips and, boom, you support Azerbaijan’s enemy, one government-aligned media outlet warned,” the article reads.

“You may say it’s just cosmetics, big deal. What does it have to do with the Armenian-occupied territories of Azerbaijan?” observed Azeri Today in a Russian-language article with the sub-title “For the attention of Azerbaijan’s Security Services!” The story takes the trouble to respond to its own question.

The Kardashian family spends part of its earnings on “advancing the recognition of ‘the Armenian Genocide’,” the author posited.

The 36-year-old Kardashian West indeed campaigns for international recognition of the massacre of ethnic Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

EurasiaNet.org reminds that with her sister Khloé and husband, rapper Kanye West, in tow, Kardashian West made a grand visit to Armenia in April 2015, drawing attention to genocide commemorations there. The actress’ own paternal ancestors barely escaped the killings when they migrated to the US at the turn of the 20th century.

The fact that neither KKW by Kylie, nor its distributor, KylieCosmetics.com, is Armenian means little or nothing to ethnicity-conscious Azerbaijanis. Earlier this year, calls were made in Azerbaijan to ban Yandex and Uber’s joint taxi-hailing service because an ethnic Armenian is at the helm of the company, EurasiaNet.org writes.

Ismail Serageldin: "We do not need Karabakh war – we need peace"

Vestnik Kavkaza

The Global Young Leaders Forum, held in Baku with the support of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, was attended by many influential politicians from all over the world. The director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center Ismail Serageldin told Vestnik Kavkaza about the results of the forum and modern processes in the East.

– How do you assess the results of the Baku Global Young Leaders Forum?

– The Nizami Ganjavi International Center has a tradition to organize large conferences with participation of high-ranking people from all over the world, including current and former presidents of different countries. This time a very interesting event was held: we tried to establish contact with the leaders of the future, young people from different countries, whom we consider to be global leaders in their areas of activity. It was a dialogue between generations – between experienced but young in their hearts people and young people, who will gain experience and become global leaders. And this event was very successful. I believe that those young people with whom we have been communicating these days have a very promising future: they can go into business, to the government, to any sphere of life.

– Can the young leaders become those who finally solve world problems?

– I hope most of these problems will be resolved much earlier. We should not leave all the problems to the next generation.

– Do you agree with the opinion of some experts that now there is a war in the Middle East between the civilizations of the East and the West?

– I totally disagree. The is a war going on between Muslims and extremists. At the moment, most of the victims of terrorists in the Middle East are Muslims, and almost 100% of those who fight on the ground against militants in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere are also Muslims. The extremely turbulent situation has spread to the West as well, but if we look at at the scale of the ongoing battles objectively, these are battles between Muslims and extremists. So there is no question of any confrontation between the West and the East. Yes, some say, “You are an ally of the West, you are not a real Muslim,” but that’s just rhetoric. In fact, there are much more important problems in the Middle East now than the discourse about the East-West confrontation.

– Which of these problems, in your estimation, should be solved in the first place?

– I think that all global players must recognize that we should work with the population and should not ignore the fact that up to 50% of the population in a number of countries have become internally displaced persons. We must strive to find a solution that would bring peace and security to these countries. It will not be easy. Last year I published an article in Newsweek titled ‘Crafting Stability in the Middle East’, where I proposed a negotiating model and other conditions, which would help us to achieve, if not the best solution, then at least a stable one that will allow people to return to their homes and become ordinary citizens.

– Is this approach applicable to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?

– I am convinced that problems like the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be resolved through diplomacy and international laws, especially since there are a number of UN Security Council resolutions on this issue. We do not need wars – we need peace, because there is no development without peace, there is no happiness and well-being of people. Security cannot exist without peace, peace cannot exist without judicature, and judicature cannot exist without justice. The best way to achieve this is to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.
