Artist Artyom Sargsyan: “The apricot pit symbolizes the enduring quality of Armenians."

17:43, August 26, 2017

By Yeranuhi Soghoyan

The pit of Armenia’s most beloved fruit, the apricot, has become an emblem for painter Artyom Sargsyan from Gyumri. Its images are everywhere – from the entrance door to earrings, leather belts, necklaces and paintings. The avant-garde artist has been in search for his unique style for a long time.

Seven years ago, when he finally decided to make jewelry from brass, bronze and silver, he realized that combining metal, leather and even wood with oil paints, displaying the apricot pit as a constant theme, would become his way to present himself and his country to the world.

Artyom was born in a family of a jeweler and a teacher. He inherited his love of painting from his father, Edik Sargsyan. He says that as a child he covered all the walls of their family house with his paintings. “Now, if we scratch the renovated parts of the walls, you’ll see my “masterpieces” beneath,” Artyom jokes.

At the age of ten, he attended the Merkurov Art School in Gyumri. He’d been a student there for a year when the 1988 earthquake struck. The school had to move to domiks (containers). “I had good teachers, Mirzoyan Sergei, Tsoghik, Ninel and Gasparyan Hovhannes. I also had good teachers in the Academy, and my dad, who was my main teacher,” Artyom says.

Artyom started studying in the Gyumri State Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty of Painting, after returning from military service in 1998. Being qualified as an artist and a teacher, Artyom taught for one year at the National Aesthetics Center in Gyumri, and three years at the Haybusak University.

“It’s not only painting that I like. We always made something at home, with my father, using our hands. From the beginning, I’ve always strived for creating something new and unique,” Artyom says with a smile, arranging the jewelry he’s made on the table.

“If you look closely, you’ll see that there are no duplications in my work. Even the pairs of earrings are different. We know that if there are earrings, they should be symmetrical and resemble each other. All my creations contradict those norms. ”

“I read somewhere that some Japanese made a large laboratory to grow apricots. They spent seven million dollars and even took Armenian soil from here. They considered everything – conditions of cultivation, the sun, the heat, light duration, direction of winds, quantity of water and God knows what else, so that they can get Armenian apricots. Well, they’ve managed to get apricots that look like apricots but don’t taste the same. Metaphorically speaking, the apricot pit symbolizes the enduring quality of Armenians.”

Artyom’s jewelry is mostly in favor with young and middle-aged women. Men can choose among a variety of leather bracelets. Their prices are not affordable for many (they range from 35 to 300 thousand drams).

“My work isn’t intended for a wide range of people. It’s a matter of preference, appreciation, and financial opportunity,” Artyom says. “Somebody might appreciate them but have no money to buy. Those who buy, do it consciously, as this is neither gold nor silver. It’s unusual to our eyes. ”

In the autumn of 2016, Artyom Sargsyan was invited to take part in the Armenian Fashion Days exhibition in Moscow. Designer Edita Grigoryan from Gyumri, who was working in Moscow and was aware of Artyom’s work, had invited him. “After the show, some works were sold, and I also got acquainted with new people. It’s important to be recognized, by your work, outside of your country. It’s a pity that there is no such tendency in the field of painting yet,” Artyom says.

His jewelry is mostly sold online. His sister, living in the U.S., helps him a lot, especially when communicating with English-speaking buyers.

Like many other artists in Gyumri, Artyom also has a problem with selling paintings. Recently, he has participated in three national exhibitions and all six exhibitions of the Real Art project, based in Gyumri. “An artist is recognized and somehow accessible via these exhibitions, but they aren’t frequently organized,” Artyom says.

“To have an individual exhibition, each artist must have at least 30-40 works, and they aren’t created in a day or in a few months. I’ve now got 18 works ready, and I’m working on four or five other things simultaneously. I’m thinking of reaching forty. I don’t know how much time is required for that, especially when I’m making some jewelry as well. I hope I can present myself to the Gyumri public with my own exhibition in a year,” Artyom says.

Being an avant-garde artist, Artyom Sargsyan has participated in international biennales in Gyumri only once. It was in 2000, when the Second International Biennale was held in Gyumri, where students from the Academy of Art, participated. Artyom’s composition, a combination of wood and oil paintings, was called “The Entrance of Christ to Gyumri.”

Artyom and his friends decided to create a group, that would later serve as a basis for a school, where children would learn pottery, painting, make-up, sculpture, design and more.

The group included sculptor Mikayelyan brothers, artist-ceramist Vazgen Gevorgyan and graphic painter Karen Tovmasyan. Artyom was the author of the initiative, and the group was called ARATTA.

The collaboration lasted less than two years. They were all too busy doing other things, Artyom says, but hopes they’ll reunite one day to establish their dream school.

Samvel Babayan to remain in custody: updated (video)

14:40 Judge Arshak Vardanyan rejected the mediation of Samvel Babayan’s advocate on removing the sequestration on Samvel Babayan’s property. According to another decision, the Judge allowed the family and relatives of Samvel Babayan to visit him and have phone calls.

The Court also rejected the mediation on eliminating the precautionary measure of Samvel Babayan. The Judge found that in freedom Babayan may hinder the course of the case.

According to the Court, Samvel Babayan is accused of serious crime and it is necessary to remain in custody.

By the way, defendant Sanasar Gabrielyan refused his advocates. The court hearing will continue next Monday.

12:40 “I don’t accept the charges levied against me, it is an invented story, I am ready to answer all the questions,” said Samvel Babayan today at the Court on the charge levied against him. Charges were levied against Samvel Babayan according to the Criminal Code Article 190 and Article 38-235 Part 2. According to the accusation, Samvel Babayan illegally obtained EUR 5,000, as well as Igla weapon.

Sanasar Gabrielyan also doesn’t accept the charges levied against him. He claimed that the Prosecutor hasn’t fully read the indictment. “We should here add ‘three apples fell from heaven’,” in this way Gabrielyan hinted that the charges levied against him are like a tale. According to the accusation, he supported Babayan to obtain Igla weapon.

Avetis Kalashyan, advocate of Samvel Babayan, mediated to remove the decision on sequestration on Samvel Babayan’s property, “Sequestration on the property isn’t intended in case of Samvel Babayan, please uphold the mediation.” The Prosecutor declined the mediation, noting that the decision on sequestration is necessary for judicial expenses. Avetis Kalashyan answered that until the decision hasn’t entered into force, the property doesn’t need to be in sequestration.

The second mediation of Babayan’s lawyer was on elimination of the ban on meetings with family members. The Prosecutor didn’t oppose to this mediation, “This mediation can be partially upheld.”

The third mediation related to eliminating the precautionary measure, detention, of Samvel Babayan.

The Prosecutor rejected the mediation.

Yerevan’s Nairit Chemical Plant Still Burning

17:14,

Clouds of acrid black smoke continue to plume from Yerevan’s Nairit chemical plant.

The fire was reported at around 2 p.m. today.

Two firefighters, with respiratory problems, have been taken to hospital.

Armenia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations says that the fire is under control.

Authorities on the scene have yet to say what caused the fire at the debt-ridden Soviet-era chemical giant that now stands idle.

1 –    Commentary
Azerbaijan Forces Bulgaria to Fire Reporter
        Who Exposed Arms Shipments
to Terrorists

By Harut Sassounian
Publisher, The California Courier
www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Last month, I wrote about
Bulgarian journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva’s revelations that Azerbaijan’s state-run Silk Way Airlines had
shipped under diplomatic cover 350 planeloads of heavy weapons and ammunition
to terrorist groups in Syria
and many other countries in the last three years.
On Aug. 24, Dilyana tweeted:
“I just got fired for telling the truth about weapons supplies for terrorists
in Syria
on diplomatic flights.”
Dilyana posted on her
facebook page that she was fired due to pressure on the government of Bulgaria
by Azerbaijan, as she was about to leave for Syria to continue her
investigation.
In an interview with
Armenpress, Dilyana said that before her firing she was called by the Bulgarian
Special Security Agency and asked about her sources of information for her
revelations. She replied that her source was the website of the Embassy of
Azerbaijan which was hacked, but she would not provide any further details. Two
hours later, she got a phone call from her newspaper, Trud Daily, telling her
that she was dismissed.
After she published her
article, Dilyana revealed that the Azeri Embassy urged the Bulgarian government
to investigate her; as a result she was fired from her job.
The daring Bulgarian journalist, however,
refuses to remain silent! She told Armenpress that no one can stop her from
continuing her investigation: “They couldn’t stop me two months ago; they
couldn’t stop me yesterday to speak out. I just posted on social media. They
can’t force an independent journalist to keep silent. I’m not obliged to
anybody. I’m obliged to tell the truth to the people, this is my job.”
Dilyana stressed that Bulgaria was well-informed about these illegal
weapons’ shipments since she had all the documents proving that the Bulgarian
government, several European countries, the United States, and many others had
given their approval for this secret and illegal operation!
The Bulgarian journalist
urged the United Nations to launch an investigation against Azerbaijan, Bulgaria,
the United States, Saudi Arabia,
and other countries. In addition, Dilyana appealed for support from independent
journalists and the public at large. She emphasized: “I am not the first and
last journalist to be fired for doing their job. I don’t have high expectations
from the mainstream media, because they have their political agenda, their
objectives and their policy. What I expect is to be able to spread this
information worldwide not by the mainstream media.”
Dilyana also revealed that Azerbaijan paid Bulgarian journalists to publish
articles favorable to Baku.
“I can give you a fact obtained from the leaked documents after the
cyber-attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy. The Azerbaijani Embassy pays money to
journalists for articles in favor of Azerbaijan
or articles ordered to be published by Azerbaijan.”
Dilyana insisted that she is
determined to continue her work: “I’m going to set up my own on-line media,
because no one in Bulgaria
will now agree to publish my investigations. I will not be offered a job in the
Bulgarian media. So I think about establishing my own media; this is the
solution.”
Confirming Dilyana’s
revelations is an article by Thierry Meyssan, in the sott.net website,
reporting that Operation Sycamore involves at least 17 states and represents
several tens of thousands of tons of weapons: “Over the last seven years,
several billion dollars’ worth of armament has been illegally introduced into Syria….
Numerous documents attest to the fact that the traffic was organized by General
David Petraeus, first of all in public, via the CIA, of which he was the
director, then privately, via the financial company KKR with the aid of certain
senior civil servants…. New elements now show the secret of Azerbaijan in the evolution of the war [in Syria]….
While Bulgaria was one of
the main arms exporters to Syria,
it received help from Azerbaijan.”
Meyssan, in his article,
quotes Sibel Edmonds — ex-FBI translator and founder of National Security Whistleblowers
Coalition — revealing that “Azerbaijan,
under Pres. Heydar Aliyev, from 1997 to 2001, hosted in Baku the number 2 of Al-Qaida, Ayman
al-Zawahiri. This was done at the request of the CIA. Although officially
wanted by the FBI, the man who [was] then number 2 of the international
jihadist network travelled regularly in NATO planes to Afghanistan, Albania,
Egypt and Turkey. He also received frequent
visits from Prince Bandar ben Sultan of Saudi Arabia.”
The Armenian-American
community should invite the distinguished Bulgarian journalist Dilyana to the United States in order to publicize through
lectures and press conferences her sensational revelations about Azerbaijan’s
illegal weapons’ shipments to terrorists.

YEREVAN
AccorHotels Group — the world leader in travel industry, modern lifestyle and
digital technologies, announces the opening of ibis Yerevan
Center, the first hotel of the Group
in Armenia.
Ibis Yerevan

Alexis Delaroff.
“Today

I am sure that the appearance of an affordable but comfortable hotel of the

3 –    Armenia Joins Firefighting Efforts in Georgia
YEREVAN
(Azatutyun.am) – Armenia
sent several dozen firefighters to neighboring Georgia on Tuesday to help
authorities there battle a wildfire that erupted in a Georgian nature reserve
at the weekend.
Georgian officials reported that the fire in the
Borjomi-Kharagauli
National Park has
expanded to an area of more than twelve hectares. They said that high winds and
heavy smoke are impeding efforts by Georgian firefighters to contain the blaze.
The steep, rugged landscape also makes it very difficult to use firefighting
machinery, they said.
The scale of the disaster led the Georgian
government to ask neighboring states for assistance. Prime Minister Giorgi
Kvirikashvili told reporters on Tuesday that Azerbaijan and Turkey have sent in
firefighting helicopters and that firefighters from Armenia are “on their way”
to the mountainous area in south-central Georgia.
The Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations
confirmed the information, saying that it has dispatched eight fire engines
along with their crews to the Borjomi reserve. The 57-strong team also includes
medics and other emergency workers, the ministry said in a statement.
According to the Armenpress news agency, the
head of the ministry’s Rescue Service, Mushegh Ghazarian, will personally
coordinate the team’s participation in the firefighting efforts.
The authorities in Yerevan
provided the assistance just days after extinguishing two massive wildfires
that burned hundreds of hectares of woodland in Armenia after weeks of unusually
high temperatures. They had to ask Russia
to send a heavy firefighting aircraft for containing one of those fires that
erupted in the Khosrov Forest State Reserve southeast of Yerevan on August 12.
Large quantities of water dropped by the
Ilyushin-72 plane proved critical in the firefighting operation conducted
there.

4 –    Third Fresno
Medical Mission
to Embark
On Annual Humanitarian Trip to Armenia
FRESNO – On
September 29, the Fresno based Fresno
Medical Mission will embark on its third annual
humanitarian medical mission to Armenia.
This project, unlike other medical groups that are funded by organizations or
general Armenian American funds, is supported by the generosity of the Fresno community.   Mr.
Berj K. Apkarian, who is the brainchild of this project, is heading this
mission.  In October 2014, he was appointed
Honorary Consul in Fresno by the Republic of Armenia.  It must be made clear that the Republic of Armenia is not funding this project.
In
September 2015, the first mission recorded great accomplishments with 27 pro
bono doctors and medical team, many hospitals were visited in the underserved
regions of Armenia including Armavir, Kodayk, Ararat, Lori and numerous
procedures and surgeries performed.  Medical
supplies, equipment (including portable EKG machines, Portable ultrasound
machines, Glucose monitors, pulse oximeters, surgical instruments including
laparoscopic trocars, and many other invasive surgical instruments)
and medicine were distributed to the patients and medical facilities.
In
September 29, 2016, the second year, the mission surpassed the first one with
29 pro bono doctors and medical team.
The contribution doubled during the second mission in terms of equipment
and supplies.
The
upcoming third year mission is going to supersede the previous ones with   40 physicians and their medical surgical,
and dental support team.
It is
only proper to congratulate and thank the organizers, the professionals and the
donors.
Armenians
are well known to be good architects, builders, doers and helpers. It is our
nature to extend our hands to those, who at no fault of their own find
themselves in desperate situations.
If very
cognizant Armenian responds, in whatever way, to the existing needs, often life
threatening, the healing process will be a fast forward victory.  If you wish to contribute to this important
endeavor, please make your tax deductible contribution to:

6 –    Iowa Becomes 47th U.S. State
        To
Recognize Armenian Genocide
DES MOINES, IA – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds
issued a powerful proclamation commemorating the Ottoman Turkish Government’s
murder of over 2.5 million Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and Syriacs, making the
Hawkeye State the 47th U.S. state to properly recognize and condemn the
Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America Eastern
Region (ANCA-ER).
During the official signing ceremony, attended
by ANCA-ER leaders and a coalition of human rights groups, including
representatives of the Iraqi Christian Relief Council, The Philos Project, and
Iowans for Armenia,
Governor Reynolds also declared October, 2017, “Armenia Awareness
Month.”  The ceremony, which was webcast live on the ANCA Facebook page,
concluded with a moving prayer offered by Rev. Fr. Tadeos Barseghyan of St.
Sahag Armenian Church of Minnesota, which is
the closest Armenian church serving the Armenian-American community of Iowa.
“Iowa’s
commemoration and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide strikes a powerful blow
against the hatred and intolerance which contribute to the ongoing vicious
cycle of genocide plaguing society to this day,” said ANCA Eastern Region Board
Member Armen Sahakyan, who spent a portion of his youth in the Hawkeye state.
“We would like to thank Governor Reynolds, Representative Art Staed, and all of
our coalition partners for their principled stance in ensuring that truth
prevails against international attempts to subvert justice for this and all
other crimes against humanity.”
The Philos Project Executive Director Robert
Nicholson noted, “The Ottoman genocide of the Armenian people was one of the
most brutal acts in history and clear evidence that evil still moves in the
world. To deny the genocide is to ignore that evil, and to ignore that evil is
to betray our values as Americans. By recognizing the genocide, the people of Iowa are declaring their
willingness to defend human life, protect minority communities, and preserve
our national heritage. We at The Philos Project thank and congratulate Governor
Reynolds for her boldness and moral clarity. She epitomizes the kind of
principled leader we need more of today.”
Iraqi Christian Relief Council Board Member
Denise Bubeck said, “This is an important step in standing up for the many
Christians who have lost their lives by injustice. As a Christian, I believe
that every life deserves dignity and respect just as God values every human
life so this proclamation gives me an opportunity again to speak for the value
of every life no matter their faith.”
“Mankind must seek justice for those whose lives
are brutally altered for all of history,” said President of the Iraqi Christian
Relief Council and the Senior Fellow for The Philos Project Juliana Taimoorazy.
“This marks a historic step forward towards this sacred endeavor.”
Coordinator for the Iowans for Armenia Charles
Crawley said, “As a civilized humanity, we all should care about the Armenian
Genocide and all other crimes against humanity. ‘Iowans for Armenia’ is proud
to continue the relationship created between the American and Armenian people
that stretches back to the humanitarian assistance provided by the
missionaries and people of good conscience of our great state through the Near
East Relief. Today’s signing of the proclamation was an important step in
securing some measure of justice for the Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek people.”
Noting that the Ottoman Turkish government’s
crime “still requires justice,” Gov. Reynolds’ proclamation cites Adolph Hitler’s
ominous reference to the murder of the Armenian people just days prior to his
invasion of Poland
and the ensuing Holocaust, which claimed the lives of over 6 million Jews, and
resulted in the decimation of other targeted racial and religious minorities.
The document recounts the cycle of subsequent genocides of the 20th and 21st
centuries, specifically mentioning the 2016 Congressional condemnation of the
Islamic State genocide against Middle East Christians, Yezidis and
other minorities.  It concludes with the assertion that by “recognizing
and consistently remembering the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust and all cases
of past and ongoing genocide, we help protect historic memory, ensure that
similar atrocities do not occur again and remain vigilant against
hatred, persecution and tyranny.”
Alabama, Indiana, and Mississippi
are the last three U.S.
states that have not yet properly memorialized and condemned the Armenian
Genocide.

9 –    Azerbaijan Outraged Over Sale of
        Kim
Kardashian Lipstick in Baku
MOSCOW
(EurasiaNet.org) – Azerbaijan
has detected something of a national security breach. And this time it comes
via a lipstick collection carrying Armenian-American television star Kim
Kardashian West’s brand name (KKW) and sold to unsuspecting Azerbaijanis.
For Azerbaijan any product with an
ethnic Armenian connection, whether a lipstick or a rifle, can be
considered an enemy operation. “You put a little bit of Kim Kardashian West
(KKW) on your lips and, boom, you support Azerbaijan’s enemy, one
government-aligned media outlet warned,” Eurasia.net wrote.
“You may say it’s just cosmetics, big deal. What
does it have to do with the Armenian-occupied territories of Azerbaijan?” observed Azeri Today in a Russian-language
article with the sub-title “For the attention of Azerbaijan’s Security Services!”
The story takes the trouble to respond to its own question.
The Kardashian family spends part of its
earnings on “advancing the recognition of ‘the Armenian Genocide,” the
author posited.
The 36-year-old Kardashian West indeed campaigns
for international recognition of the massacre of ethnic Armenians by Ottoman
Turks as genocide.
With her sister Khloé and husband, rapper Kanye
West, in tow, Kardashian West made a grand visit to Armenia in April 2015, drawing
attention to genocide commemorations there. The actress’ own paternal
ancestors barely escaped the killings when they migrated to the US at
the turn of the 20th century.
The fact that neither KKW by Kylie, nor its
distributor,
KylieCosmetics.com, is
Armenian means little or nothing to ethnicity-conscious Azerbaijanis. Earlier
this year, calls were made in Azerbaijan to
ban Yandex and Uber’s joint taxi-hailing service because an ethnic
Armenian is at the helm of the company.

He believes these experiences can be helpful for his children,
grand-children, friends, communities across this world and future
generations.
The memoir begins with the Armenian Genocide of
100 years ago and includes several climactic events, such as his grandfather’s
murder by Turks and Kurds. The memoir takes the reader from Dr. Babajanian’s

investment prospects with US technology companies
Yerevan August 25
Naira Badalyan. For better positioning in the eyes of the US business
circles, as well as engaging in the Armenian economy US investment in
the near future on the initiative of the Armenian Development Fund
(ADF) in the Republic of Armenia will host workshops, which will
feature the creative development of local expertise. "Immediately on

discussions with representatives of the American medium and large
businesses in Los Angeles.
As the press service of the FRA, during his visit to the United States
head of the organization, accompanied by Chairman of the
Armenian-American Business Council Alec Baghdasaryan visited a number
of technology companies, including "Career", "QUETICO", "Cater Truck".
The investment prospects of Armenia were discussed with the heads of
the companies.
Previously, ArmInfo reported that a presentation of investment
opportunities of Armenia was held in the American Los Angeles. Head of
ARF told US investors about the readiness of Yerevan to become an
important platform to enter the Iranian market (from $ 450 billion
GDP) and the EAEC (with $ 3 trillion of GDP). In addition, during the
presentation "Choose Armenia" in the video "Nation of Innovation", the
achievements and opportunities of the republic in the field of IT were
demonstrated. The event was held on the initiative of the Armenian
Genocide in Los Angeles. Head of the Chamber of Commerce of Los
Angeles County and Orange County, and the cities of Los Angeles and
Glendale, representatives of consulting agencies and corporate
executives, attended it.
To note, as of April 1, 2017 accumulated gross investment in Armenia
from the US amounted to 211.1 billion AMD or $ 436.6 million with an
annual growth of 13%. In particular, FDI amounted to 122.6 billion or
$ 253.6 million, with annual growth of 11%. Taking into account
repayments, gross investments amounted to over 99 billion or $ 204.8
million with annual growth of 4%, including FDI 80.5 billion AMD or $
166.5 million with an annual decline of 4%. (The calculated exchange
rate of AMD as of March 31, 2017 was 483.45 AMD).

In the first half of 2017, Armenia increased the volume of polished exports by 92.5% per annum, with imports growing by 52.4%

In the first half of 2017, Armenia increased the volume of polished
exports by 92.5% per annum, with imports growing by 52.4%
Yerevan August 26
Alina Hovhannisyan. In the first half of 2017, Armenia sharply
increased polished exports - by 92.5% per annum, against growth of 2.3
times for the same period in 2016, and by 70% in the same period in
2015. A positive trend was also registered for the import of products
of the lapidary industry, where in quantitative terms the volumes of
supplies increased by 52.4% in the first half of 2017 (against the
growth of 2 times in the same period in 2016, and a decrease of 57% in
the same period of 2015).
According to the data of the RA Customs Service, in the first half of
the year 2017, Armenia exported 133.8 thousand carats of diamonds, the
customs value of which increased by 17.9% per annum to $ 53.1 million.
From Armenia, raw materials are exported mainly to the United Arab
Emirates (38.4%), Russia (24.3%), Belgium (19.5% %), Switzerland
(7.4%), and the rest is in the USA, Canada, and Germany.
Meanwhile, during the reporting period, 244.2 thousand carats of rough
diamonds worth $ 75.3 million (with an annual growth of 28.2%) were
imported to the republic. Primarily, rough diamonds are imported to
Armenia from the United Arab Emirates (53%), Belgium (11.1%), Russia
(8%), Switzerland (7.9%), Canada (6.8%), India (6.7%) and the rest
from Thailand, South Africa, and Hong Kong. By way of comparison, we
note that for the first half of the year in 2016 Armenia exported 69.5
thousand carats of diamonds worth $ 45 million, and imported 160.2
thousand tons of diamonds carat with a total value of $ 59 million.
Armenia does not have its own diamond deposits and imports rough
diamonds for further processing and export of diamonds mainly to the
same countries from which raw materials are imported. Traditionally,
the import of diamonds exceeds exports, which is explained in the
Ministry of Economy by their re-export to third countries. Armenia's
accession to the Eurasian Economic Union has banned the re-export of
rough diamonds.
Many international experts are inclined to believe that for almost the
whole year the precious stones market will be stable. But by the end
of the year the situation can change significantly. This is due to the
fact that recently there is a strong shortage of stones. To this state
of affairs has led to the fact that the existing resources are quite
exhausted. In other words, the resources of mines where stones are
mined are very much depleted. Worldwide, very few diamonds are
currently mined. It is this state of affairs that will lead to the
fact that the demand for these stones will increase significantly. But
the very diamond will be very small in order to fill the market.
According to some experts in the diamond market, the demand for
diamonds will be observed for a long time. Therefore, there is a great
opportunity to invest in diamonds. International experts believe that
the polished market will be quite stable until 2020. The growth in the
value of polished diamonds may be further influenced only by
macroeconomic uncertainty, which will inevitably be combined with
access to financing. But, despite this the minimum cost of precious
stones is not expected.

Karen Karapetyan in Gegharkunik: the process of planning community budgets for 2018 will be held under strict supervision

ARMINFO News Agency, Armenia
 Saturday
Karen Karapetyan in Gegharkunik: the process of planning community
budgets for 2018 will be held under strict supervision
Yerevan August 26
Naira Badalyan. During the first 7 months of 2017, the own incomes of
the Gegharkunik region of Armenia were fulfilled by 88%, the
performance of the regional budget increased by 12.8% compared to the
same period 2016. Karen Botoyan, the head of the regional
administration, reported this to Karen Karapetyan, the Prime Minister
of Armenia. In the city of Gavar, Gegharkunik region of the republic,
on August 25, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of the head of
the government to discuss the progress of development programs of the
region and communities, work carried out and forthcoming plans.
As the RA government press service reports, presenting the social and
economic situation in the region and macroeconomic indicators,
Governor Karen Botoyan noted that the share of Gegharkunik in
Armenia's GDP is 5%, and the GDP per capita in the region is 1 million
64 thousand 900 AMD. The volume of industrial production in 2016
amounted to 31 billion 728 million 800 thousand, per capita - 136
thousand 900 drams.
Mining is the main direction of the region's economy, and agriculture
is a priority area, Botoyan said. The volume of gross agricultural
products for the previous year was 153 billion, per capita - about 660
thousand 100 drams.
According to the head of the regional administration, 9 investment
programs were submitted to the Government from Gegharkunik for a total
of 2 billion 56 600 600 drams. Approval was given to 6 of them. The
development of tourism is also the focus of the region, Karen Botoyan
stressed. The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Development
and the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments, as well as
the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, presented 33 investment programs that
are under discussion. As Botoyan assured, the issue of creating jobs
is at the center of attention of the administration.
With the exception of the Artsvashen community, all the others (91)
have approved development programs. All communities also have
developed digital, which provides information on the socio-economic
situation in a particular community and its investment potential.
Concerning the collection of own incomes, Prime Minister Karen
Karapetyan stressed that in this respect the lowest level in the
region is due to weak discipline. According to him, the envisaged
increase in the region's own revenues is 9%, and in the other 15-20%.
As the head of government noted, the process of planning community
budgets for 2018 will be held under strict control. "All heads of
communities should know that there can not be such that according to
the republican budget the fees were 100% and the deductions to the
communities were according to the plan, and the communities themselves
planned at their discretion," the prime minister said. "We want to
create equal partnership relations, we respect the rights of the heads
of communities, but this does not mean that they should work in the
same regime in our community, and we in the other. We generate budget
revenues as a result of working with the same citizens that the heads
of communities," he said.
The head of the Armenian Cabinet of Ministers was informed about the
progress of work in the spheres of agriculture, health, education,
recycling of garbage.

Hollywood honors French singing legend Charles Aznavour

Hollywood honors French singing legend Charles Aznavour
 Los Angeles, Aug 24 2017
French icon Charles Aznavour, one of the 20th century's most prolific
entertainers who continues to write and perform at 93, was honored
Thursday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
With a career spanning eight decades, the crooner has recorded 1,400
songs -- 1,300 of which he wrote -- and produced over 390 albums in
multiple languages.
The star, who is also credited in more than 60 movies, defied
detractors who pointed to his unconventional looks to become one of
France's most iconic singers, dubbed the country's Frank Sinatra.
"Sinatra once said every song is a one-act play with one character,
and Charles is an extraordinary actor as well as an extraordinary
singer," film director Peter Bogdanovich, a friend of the star, said
at the unveiling ceremony.
Aznavour delivered a brief message thanking well-wishers, explaining
that he rarely speaks publicly in English as he doesn't feel his
command of the language is good enough.
"French is my working language but my family language is always
Armenian," he said, in front of hundreds of fans from both countries,
as well as supporters from across the world gathered outside the
historic Pantages Theater.
"After today, after that star there, I can be somebody that can say
I'm also now a little bit Californian because I have my daughter here
and my grandchildren."
Bogdanovich -- whose movies include "What's Up, Doc" and "The Last
Picture Show" -- went through some of Aznavour's most popular hits,
including "She," which he described as the greatest ever song about
women, and paid tribute to Aznavour's energy and dedication.
"That he does what he does at 93 is an inspiration to all of us. He
doesn't lack anything. He's the best," he added.
- 'An actor who sings' -
Born Shahnour Varinag Aznavourian in Paris to Armenian immigrants on
May 22, 1924, Aznavour has sold more than 100 million records.
Aznavour's parents fled the Turkish-ruled Ottoman empire to escape the
massacres being committed against their compatriots and landed in
Paris, where they were waiting for a visa to head to the United
States.
When the visa never materialized they ended up making their home in
France, producing shows which Aznavour and his sister would take part
in from a very young age.
He said in a recent interview with BBC radio he always saw himself
"more as an actor who sings than a singer who acts."
Aznavour left school early -- and said he was always uncomfortable
about his lack of higher education -- but after World War II he teamed
up with fellow French icon Edith Piaf, who took him to America and a
solo career.
As her manager and songwriter, Aznavour lived with Piaf for eight
years, once remarking he saw many of her lovers come and go but he was
not one of them as "she was not my type."
Either way, Piaf's endless badgering for Aznavour to get a nose job
eventually paid off.
"As for criticism, I have heard it all: They said I was ugly, short,
that the ill should not be allowed to sing," he once told AFP in an
interview.
"I had an exemplary career I never could have dreamed of."

In Gegharkunik, first station of agricultural machinery was launched within agrarian state program of subsidizing leasing framework

ARMINFO News Agency, Armenia
 Saturday
In Gegharkunik, first station of agricultural machinery was launched
within agrarian state program of subsidizing leasing framework
Yerevan August 26
Naira Badalyan. On August 25, the first station of agricultural
machinery was opened in Tsovak community of Gegharkunik region of
Armenia within the framework of the program of state support for the
provision of agricultural machinery in financial lease (leasing).
Minister of Agriculture of Armenia Ignaty Arakelyan stated at the
opening ceremony that the creation of such stations will increase the
efficiency of agriculture.
As the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture informs, the
company "FIAR GROUP" founded the station, the equipment is provided to
UCO "MSP Investments" CJSC, the supplier is "Hrashq Aigi" LLC. At the
station there are 30 units of European modern agricultural machinery,
including combine harvester and tractor, which will be provided to
land users for rent for agricultural work.
According to the minister, the implementation of such projects will
have a long-term nature. The regional manager for the export line of
the leading machine-building company "CLAAS" Thomas Shtigler noted the
importance of the correct choice of agricultural machinery taking into
account the specificity of the relief of Armenia.
Earlier ArmInfo informed, starting from March 27, reception of
applications for participation in the program on provision of
agricultural machinery in leasing started in Armenia. According to the
program approved by the Cabinet, farmers will be able to purchase
agricultural equipment on the following conditions: advance payment -
20%, interest rate - 2% per annum, maturity - 3-10 years, depending on
the type of equipment. Another 7% will be subsidized by the state. As
a result, it is expected that in 2017 about 2.2 billion drams will be
allocated for the purchase of agricultural machinery. Under this state
program, it is possible to purchase tractors of different brands,
combine harvesters, balers, seeders, plows, mowers, potato-sowers,
potato diggers, cultivators, trucks, sprayers and other agricultural
equipment.
On May 18, at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, a plan was
approved for organizing a state-private machine and tractor station
(MTS). As Ignaty Arakelyan noted, earlier, the department started
accepting applications for participation in the program for the
organization of the station. Only one company, Idas LLC, responded to
the state's proposal. In this regard, the minister suggested 700
million drams from the government's reserve fund in the first half of
2017 for the implementation of the program and the purchase of the
necessary agricultural machinery. The Ministry of Agriculture will
provide this equipment on a gratuitous basis to the Agricultural
Development Fund for further allocation to farmers. For their part,
private traders will invest 242 million drams. After 4 years, the
minister said, the funds will be returned with interest, in the amount
of 926 million.
According to the Financial Rating of Banks and Credit Companies of
Armenia as of June 30, 2017, prepared by NA ArmInfo, the total volume
of leasing operations amounted to 15.6 billion, the lion's share of
which falls on ACBA Leasing - 12.3 billion drams. A year ago, as of
June 30, 2016, the total volume of leasing operations was higher -
16.5 billion drams, of which ACBA Leasing accounted for 12.6 billion
drams. As of January 1, 2017, the total volume of leasing operations
was 16.7 bln drams, incl. ACBA Leasing - 13.1 billion drams. In 2016,
the total volume of leasing operations grew by 10%, and only the ACBA
Leasing portfolio increased by 11%. From Armenian banks, leasing
operations are carried out by Ameriabank, Araratbank, Converse Bank
and VTB Bank (Armenia), and there are three leasing companies - ACBA
Leasing, Agroleasing and Unileasing. The volume of leasing operations
ACBA Leasing is reflected in the consolidated balance sheet of
ACBA-Credit Agricole.
