The Central Asian country called a trip by the Hawaii representative and other members of Congress to Armenia and Artsakh a “provocation.”

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has been banned from entering Azerbaijan, a formerly Soviet country in the South Caucasus region, adjacent to Russia, Iran and Armenia.

Gabbard went to the conflict-ridden region last week on what was billed as a fact-finding trip with a congressional delegation. The group visited a number of sites in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian-majority enclave that has broken away and now calls itself the Republic of Artsakh.

Azerbaijani officials contend that Armenian forces illegally seized the Nagorno-Karabakh area during a war that ended in 1994.

Azerbaijani officials called the congressional delegation’s visit to these areas a “provocation,” according to regional press reports.

Gabbard, along with colleagues Rep. Frank Pallone, a Democrat from New Jersey, and Rep. David Valadao, a Republican from California, had been added to “a list of undesirable people.”

“Pallone, Valadao, and Gabbard paid an illegal visit to the occupied Azerbaijani territories, thus breaching Azerbaijani law,” said the country’s foreign minister, Hikmet Hajiyev, in an article published by Interfax, an online news site that provides information on Eurasia.

Armenians, however, welcomed the visit.

Armenians are majority Christians and Azerbaijanis are majority Muslims. They have been sparring for a century over who has done the most damage and inflicted the most violence on the other.

On Wednesday, responding to questions from Honolulu Civil Beat, Gabbard’s office issued a press release that described the trip she had taken. The release said the trip occurred “last week.”

The trip, approved by the U.S. State Department under the Mutual Education and Cultural Exchange Act, was funded by the Republic of Armenia, according to Emily Latimer, a spokeswoman for Gabbard.

The press release did not address the ban by Azerbaijan, and Latimer offered no further comment.

Attached to the press release were pictures of Gabbard meeting with the speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, the president of Armenia and Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Members of the congressional delegation, which included Rep. Jackie Speier and Rep. Anna Eshoo, both Democrats from Northern California, also visited a vocational school in Shushi that is supported by donations from Armenians living in other countries.

IWF suspends nine countries for doping violations

IANS | Budapest |

Nine countries have been suspended from weightlifting for a year by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

The decision by the IWF followed the retesting of anti-doping samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Countries with at least three doping offenses from those Olympics were suspended, reports Xinhua news agency.

The member federations identified as such are currently Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.

“We have made it clear that the incidence of doping in some areas is totally unacceptable and that our members have a responsibility to ensure clean sport in their countries,” IWF President Tamas Ajan said in a statement.

“If they do not fulfil their responsibilities to ensure their lifters are clean then they will lose their right to participate.”

The suspensions could mean a drastically weakened world championships, scheduled from November 28 through December 6 in Anaheim, the Untied States.

‘Only gravediggers and dead are left here… what are we rejecting?

Aravot, Armenia
Oct 1 2017

Zaruhi Postanjyan, leader of the “Yerkir Tsirani” party, is in Dilijan. She walks around and calls people for protesting.

She asked Dilijan taxi drivers, whether the rate of migration is high. The drivers replied: “Just sit here for a couple of hours, and you will see how many buses are departing. In fact, only gravediggers and dead are left here”.

Postanjyan said that they had a special mission, they were walking around towns and villages, urging the residents to start rebelling on the same day at the same time to deny these illegalities and to establish new regime: “If we do not rebel, we will lose our homeland”.

Postanjyan said that when communicating with people she understood that there were two poles: one totally has no belief, says that nothing can be done, the other waits for a spark: “Now let’s see how we can convey this spark, so that everyone can stand up and reject these illegal authorities”. One of the Dilijan residents asked, “what are you rejecting? we have no weapons, we have nothing, what can we do?”.

Postanjyan answered, “We do not need weapons, we exceed in number. Their armed 22 thousand policemen will be enough only for Baghramyan 26, if all the towns and villages join us. The “president” and the forces serving and securing him will not be able to exert pressure on everyone”. The resident responded, “I don’t believe anymore. I have two daughters, they have left with my grandchildren, only me and my wife remained here. We have too little money, it’s not enough to pay for the utilities”.

Postanjyan said, “Well, follow the political processes. You don’t need to come to Yerevan. We are all going to block the main streets on the same day at the same time. They are waiting for us to go to Yerevan, so they can put us into a trap, that is why we urge everyone to rebel at the same time. After that we should invite a large pan-Armenian global assembly, where delegates should nominate an interim government from our nation’s cream. After that elections should be held under equal conditions”.

One of the Dilijan residents told in an offended voice that they were giving out barbecues during the adoption of independence, and he heard how someone said, “put Vano Siradeghyan’s share away”, that is initially, there have been chosen ones and everything was unfair. Postanjyan promised to restore justice.

‘Many mistakes in April war’

Aravot, Armenia

Artsakh Defence Army colonel assures that the opponent cannot mislead us anymore as they did in the four-day war

Colonel Victor Arustamyan, Head of Operative Division of the Artsakh Republic Defense Army, made a remarkable statement at the conference titled “The military-political tactics of the opponent and our plans” organized by the ARF.

Head of the “Yelq” faction Nikol Pashinyan, referring to the April war, had asked, how come our actions were not adequate at the moment of the attack, effect of unexpectedness occurred and everyone started to discuss it social network. The Colonel replied, “Periodically aggravating the situation on the front line, through constant penetration attempts by subversive intelligence groups, our attention was focused on counteracting those. Possessing no better intelligence means, we were not able. For example, two tanks were moved to the frontline, the next night we heard noises of departing tanks, they have been able to mislead us with the constant shift military hardware. Then, just after discovering the use of the military hardware, we took an action”.

“Aravot” asked Victor Arustamyan: if before the April war the opponent managed to make a constant shift of military hardware and to mislead us, how much alert we are now to stay away from being misled again, whether it is possible that we are misled again, Arustamyan answered, “No such thing can happen at the moment, since now everything is under control, both the monitoring and the intelligence systems are already operating at full capacity, we are already technically equipped”.

In response to the question, what the lessons are we learned from the April war, whether now we can talk about mistakes, Victor Arustamyan said, “There were a lot of mistakes, but also positive aspects, analysis have been carried out, measures are being taken to correct the mistakes, the positive is being spread by different actions. Now everything is done to eliminate the shortcomings. The most important lesson we have learned and understood from the April war was that no matter what is happening in the political arena, the armed forces should always be alert”.

Media, social networks regularly note a number of problems, that there was no fuel in tanks, fuel was fake. In this regard Mr Arustamyan said, “There is no such thing, as the head of the operative division of the Defence Army, I say that all tanks have been put into operation and reached their combat zones, there was no problem concerning the lack of any substance of any technique”.

To the question, whether now we are ready to solve the problem via military actions, Arustamyan gave such an answer, “We are ready and we will continue to prepare and perform our tasks”.
