Robert Lewandowski scored a hat trick on Thursday night as Poland routed Armenia 6-1 to move to the the brink of qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 29-year-old Bayern Munich star started the game with 47 international goals, one behind the record of 48 held since 1980 by Wlodzimierz Lubanski.

Kamil Grosicki scored Poland’s opener after just two minutes at the Hanrapetakan Stadium in Yerevan with a near-post finish from Lukasz Piszczek’s cross.

Fifteen minutes later Lewandowski curled in a free-kick to make it 2-0 and draw level with Lubanski.

Lewandowski claimed the record when he blasted home an indirect free-kick on 25 minutes and he completed his treble in the second half to make it 50 goals in 90 appearances. Jakub Blaszczykowski and Rafal Wolski were also on the scoresheet for Poland.

Lubanski, who played for the majority of his career at Górnik Zabrze in Poland and Lokeren in Belgium, set his tally in 75 internationals between 1963 and 1980.

Poland require just a point from their final qualifier at home to Montenegro on Sunday to clinch their place in the finals.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has taken ‘all responsibility’ for Armenia’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat at the hands of Poland in Yerevan on Thursday night.

Armenia have endured a difficult World Cup qualifying campaign and currently lie in fifth place in Group E ahead of basement boys Kazakhstan.

Artur Petrosyan’s side have failed to win a qualifier since March and were put to the sword by Robert Lewandowski, who became Poland’s all-time top scorer after bagging a hat-trick.

Mkhitaryan, Armenia’s captain and all-time top scorer, was at a loss to explain how his side were so comprehensively outclassed.

“Problems are everywhere,” he said after the humiliating defeat.

“We must do everything to ensure that this does not happen again in the match against Kazakhstan. There are no words.

“It was a shameful defeat. I am the captain of the team, and I undertake all responsibility for defeat from Poland.”

Armenia, who are condemned to finish in fifth place in the group, head to Kazakhstan for their final World Cup qualifier on Sunday as they look to salvage some pride.

Mkhitaryan scored his only goal of the qualification campaign against Kazakhstan in a 2-0 win seven months ago.

Azerbaijani Press: Construction of Church in Jabrail Armenia’s Provocation

Turan Information Agency, Azerbaijan

Construction of Church in Jabrail Armenia's Provocation
Baku / 05.10.17 / Turan: Armenia violates the norms of humanitarian
law, and its actions contradict the basic principles of Christianity
and the teachings of the Gospel. This was stated by the official
representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Hikmet
Hajiyev, commenting on the construction of a Christian church by
Armenia in the Jabrail district of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia.
As Hajiyev noted, the construction of a church in Jabrail, where
Armenians never lived, is an attempt to deliberately add a religious
color to the conflict.
"The special diligence of Armenian religious figures in this process,
which is illegal and far from religious values, is deeply regrettable.
Such actions carried out by Armenia and the Armenian Church not only
contradict international humanitarian law, but also do not correspond
to the Gospel and the basic principles of Christianity, which like
other celestial religions teaches peace, respect for the property of
others and avoidance of aggressive actions," Hajiyev said.
He stressed that the issue in connection with this provocative action
of Armenia will be raised in the framework of international
organizations. -05D06--

Azerbaijani Press: Armenian MPs urged not to make provocative statements

By Rashid Shirinov

Vice Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Bahar Muradova has urged Armenian MPs to refrain from making provocative statements.

Muradova, who spoke on the last day of the Assembly’s session in Andorra on October 6, said that every such provocation has been adequately retaliated: “This does not happen for the first time and such statements have not yielded any results so far.”

“This is why I urged my Armenian colleagues to refrain from making provocative statements that can complicate the situation,” she noted.

Muradova also said that Armenia is permanently doing this in the occupied Azerbaijani territory that it controls and on the troops’ contact line.

“If we can’t do anything at the parliamentary level to ensure that common efforts yield expected results, we should not cause problems,” she added.

Azerbaijan and Armenia for over two decades have been locked in a conflict, which emerged over Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since the war, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

Today, Armenia still ignores four UN Security Council resolutions on immediate withdrawal from the occupied territory of Azerbaijan, thus keeping tension high in the region.
