“Peace” Through Anti-Semitism
By Joseph D’Hippolito
FrontPageMagazine.com | February 9, 2005

If Israelis and Palestinians ever achieve peace, it likely will not
result from the efforts of the Holy Land’s most prestigious Christian
prelates.

In “Patriarch of Terror,” Front Page Magazine exposed the
anti-Semitism of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah, and
his collaborationist relationship with Yasser Arafat. Sabbah,
however, is not alone.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Irineos I, and his former
spokesman, Father Atallah Hanna, have used even more virulent
rhetoric in their own collaborationist campaign. That rhetoric
includes supporting suicide bombing, charging the Jews with deicide
and advocating their expulsion from the Holy Land.

Irineos originally was appointed as the Greek Orthodox patriarch in
September 2001 but did not officially take office until this January.
According to Greek Orthodox procedures, local governments must
approve the appointment. Jordan and the Palestinian Authority — two
of the three areas encompassing the patriarchate — approved Irineos.
Israel withheld approval because of his suspected support for Arafat.

Israeli suspicions were confirmed by a July 2001 letter that Irineos
sent to Arafat and the Palestinian Authority’s diplomatic
representative to Greece, Abdullah Abdullah. Irineos, the
patriarchate’s diplomatic representative to Athens at the time, was
one of five candidates rejected by Israel’s justice minister, Meir
Sheetrit. So Irineos asked Arafat to use his influence among Arabs
world to pressure Israel to reconsider.

Although Irineos’ English is awkward, his message is clear:

“You are aware of my opinions regarding the Holy City of Jerusalem,
as well as the support that consecutively I offered in the past in
the fight of your people and your nation.

“You are aware of my multiple interventions towards the late
Patriarch Diodoros and the Greek Government and the international
forums for the rights of the Palestinian (sic) to have their
independent state with its capital Jerusalem.”

But this is the letter’s most damning evidence:

“You are finally aware of the sentiments of disgust and disrespect
that all the Holy Sepulcher Fathers are feeling for the descendants
of the crucifiers of our Lord Jesus Christ, actual crucifiers of your
people, Sionists (sic) Jewish conquerors of the Holy Land of
Palestine. (emphasis added).”

Should Arafat’s influence prove successful, Irineos continued, “Rest
assured, Mr. President, that the rights of the most beloved
Palestinian people on the Holy City of Jerusalem will find their most
‘hot’ supporter. Our beloved Mr. Chouri (Arafat’s personal secretary)
will inform you accordingly regarding what we have discussed of the
real estate of our Patriarchate within the boundaries of the Old
City.”

Irineos suggests more than a quid pro quo. He suggests a combined
effort to remove any Jewish presence from Jerusalem — and,
eventually, from all of Israel.

A 1998 security report presented to the Israeli cabinet stated that
the Palestinian Authority seeks to control church-owned property,
particularly in Jerusalem. The Palestinians’ big target is the Greek
Orthodox patriarchate, the largest and wealthiest church in the Holy
Land. The patriarchate derives its wealth from extensive land
holdings throughout Israel that it accumulated through the centuries
— including the land on which the Knesset, the Israeli parliament,
and the president’s and prime minister’s official residences sit.

The report also stated that “Chouri,” Irineos’ misspelling of Ramzi
Khouri, was working with Fatah’s Marwan Barghouti to create a union
of Orthodox Palestinian Christians that would act as a pressure group
for the Palestinian Authority.

“The PA realizes that control over the Christian holy places in
Jerusalem can be used as a powerful lever to gain international
political influence in the Christian world,” the report stated. “The
PA has used its indirect control over the Church of the Nativity in
Bethlehem as a means of influencing the Greek Orthodox and Armenian
Patriarchates, through which it impacts the political positions of
the Greek government and the European Union.”

The ultimate goal is conquest though land purchase and lease
revocation, if violence fails.

“The fear in the (Israeli) government is that in a few years Israel
will find itself with a patriarchate of Arabs that will in theory
hold 50 percent of the land downtown,” stated an investment report
from Capital Property Consultants, a Jerusalem real estate firm.
“Israel was always wary of the Greek Church, the oldest and most
powerful church in Jerusalem, coming under the rule of a
pro-Palestinian patriarch, fearing it could result in land disputes
when long-term leases began expiring.”

Irineos also expressed his anti-Israeli stance in a letter on
patriarchate letterhead to Arafat and Abdullah during the 2002 siege
of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, which began when Palestinian
gunmen attacked the church and barricaded themselves inside. Irineos’
awkward English does not disguise his attitude, as these excerpts
demonstrate:

“With extreme anger we see the aggression against your headquarters
in Ramallah, (a) fact that proves the humiliation in which the
Israeli government suppresses the legal leadership of the Palestinian
people but also proves their indifference for the peace process and
the international community. The siege of the Holiest among the
shrines the Nativity Church in Bethlehem makes even clearer their
intentions.

“We wish to assure you, Dear Mr. President, that the Greek Orthodox
Patriarchate of Jerusalem and myself stand side by side with your
people in this fight for freedom and justice.

“We pray to the Almighty God of Love to give you success and victory
in this holy struggle, and also help to establish His peace in the
Holy Land.”

Both letters were made public by the Israeli daily Ma’ariv as part of
a series of articles between December 2002 and January 2004 on
Irineos’ pro-Palestinian attitude. Irineos responded with a libel
suit but withdrew it in December. He even paid 10,000 Israeli shekels
plus value-added tax — a total of roughly more than $2,000 — to
cover Ma’ariv’s legal expenses.

Despite Irineos’ letters and the public opposition of such cabinet
ministers as Natan Sharansky and Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon successfully argued for Irineos’ confirmation. The
reasons involve internal party politics, pressure from real estate
interests and — as Sharon aide Dov Weisglass told Israel’s Arutz
Sheva news service in 2002 — pressure from the United States.

Hanna, an Arab born in Haifa, was serving as the patriarchate’s
spokesman when he subtly advocated suicide bombing as part of the
Palestinian intifada in June 2002 during an address in Abu Dhabi to a
think tank run by the Arab League.

“Some freedom fighters adopt martyrdom or suicide bombings, while
others opt for other measures,” the Gulf News quoted Hanna as saying.
“Don’t expect us to keep distance and watch. We are in the struggle
whether it is martyrdom or any other means. The Muslims and the
Christians are one and cannot be separated from the struggle for the
liberation of Palestine.”

Irineos, who had yet to be confirmed and did not need adverse
publicity, fired Hanna that July. One month later, Israeli police
arrested and questioned Hanna on suspicion of inciting violence,
having relations with terrorist groups and illegally visiting Syria
and Lebanon, which remain in a state of war with Israel. Hanna left
the country to meet with Hezbollah’s leader, Sheikh Hassan Narallah,
so police placed Hanna under house arrest and confiscated his
passports.

Nevertheless, Hanna has since used even more vituperative rhetoric
without any apparent public protest from Irineos. At a reception in
Haifa on January 11, 2003, Hanna expressed emphatic support for
suicide bombers:

“The fidaiyin are the heroes of this nation. We are proud of them and
resolutely refuse any attempt to defame their deeds. They are not
committing suicide, as some claim, and they are not terrorists, as
others claim — they are resisting the occupation. We unreservedly
support the martyrdom operations.”

Six days later, in a rally at Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy
Sepulcher, Hanna was even more enthusiastic:

“Martyrdom operations are an excellent and good way to resist the
Zionist invasion of the Palestinian land. In front of the Church of
the Holy Sepulcher, we bless the souls of the heroic shahids
(martyrs) and the families of the shahids.

“The names of the fidaiyi shahids will be inscribed in the history of
our Palestinian and Arab people in holy white letters. The voices of
those who defame these acts of heroism and honor are nothing more
than anomalous voices that do not represent Arab and Palestinian
public opinion.”

But Hanna saved his most extreme rhetoric for his sermon of January
19, 2003 — the Orthodox Epiphany:

“Palestine is from the (Mediterranean) sea to the (Jordan) river. We
emphatically refuse any concession on (even) a grain of the land of
our precious homeland. Just as Ramallah, Gaza, Nablus, and Jenin are
Palestinian cities, so are Haifa, Nazareth, Jaffa, Ramle, Lod,
Beersheba, Safed, and others Palestinian cities.

“We do not believe in so-called ‘peace with Israel’ because peace
cannot be made with Satan. Israel is the greatest Satan. No
concession and no truce must be made. The Palestinians’ rights will
be restored only by resistance. What was taken by force will be
restored only by force.

“The Zionist Jews are foreigners in this land. They have no right to
live or settle in it. They should go somewhere else in the world to
establish their state and their false entity. Jerusalem is an Arab
city and the Jews must not settle in it, be masters over it, or carry
out any type of religious ritual or ceremony in it. They must leave
their homes. They have no right to live on land, cities or villages
that are not theirs.”

Sixty years after the liberation of Auschwitz’s prisoners, it is an
ironic obscenity for alleged men of God to promote the most
pernicious forms of anti-Semitism.

Parliament rejects debates on return of soviet-time bank deposits

PARLIAMENT REJECTS DEBATES ON RETURN OF SOVIET-TIME BANK DEPOSITS

ArmenPress
Feb 8 2005

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 7, ARMENPRESS: Members of the Armenian
parliament, back from a winter recess, have turned down today a
motion by the opposition Ardarutyun alliance that calls for
parliament debates on returning the populations’ depreciated
Soviet-time bank accounts.
The bill was authored by Viktor Dalakian, the secretary of the
alliance and suggested that the motion be put on the agenda of the
regular three-day session. Talking to reporters, Dalakian said his
bill asks the government to announce publicly that it will pay
compensations and will draft special mechanisms for it.
But the Republican Party of prime minister Margarian and Orinats
Yerkir of parliament chairman Baghdasarian argued in favor of
postponing the issue to give time to a special task force, set up by
the president, to investigate the problem and present its own
conclusion.

Big bands make it a big day

by SIMON COLLINS

Techno, hip-hop and good old rock’n’roll – there was something for
every one of the 36,000 music lovers

More than 36,000 fans rocked into Claremont Showground yesterday for
Perth’s sell-out instalment of the Big Day Out.

They flocked to hear a big range of acts from the hip-hop of Beastie
Boys, the Streets and Scribe, and techno of Chemical Brothers, to
straight-up rock’n’roll from Powderfinger, Spiderbait and the Donnas.

There was something for just about everyone – if you didn’t like the
Aussie hip-hop of Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods, you could squeeze through
the huge crowd to catch almost veteran rockers Grinspoon.

Punters turned to one another to comment how much Melbourne act
Dallas Crane rocked on the green stage. Or agreed to disagree about
Leeds dance rock act The Music. Or asked the quickest way to the beer
ticket stall.

The Big Day Out is also the ultimate opportunity for self-expression,
with hairstyles designed to turn heads and shock mothers, or bodies
painted head-to-toe in blue paint.

Many simply declared their allegiance by wearing their favourite
band’s T-shirt, usually black.

One of the biggest acts were Iowa hardcore band Slipknot, whose
unrelenting barrage of drums, guitars and guttural roars nearly shook
the Showground into rubble.

The nine-piece act took the stage in their trademark fright-masks,
welcomed by their legion of fans whom the band refer to as Maggots.

Based on the tried and true method of determining a band’s popularity
by the number of T-shirts worn by punters, Slipknot seemed streets
ahead – and the screams of the Maggots confirmed it.

Slipknot and Armenian-American hard rockers System of a Down
delivered the most intense effort segment of the day, prompting mass
moshing and headbanging.

Stage announcers asked for calm in the crowd as the testosterone
flowed as thick and mean as the dense noise.

Decked out in matching Aussie green-and-gold tracksuits,
forty-something rap veterans Beastie Boys busted out some fly hip-hop
jams – that means they were good – to complete 11 hours of action on
the main stages.

There were seven stages in all, including the Local Produce stage
where Screwtop Detonators rocked as if their lives depended on it.

Ten Perth bands performed on this comparatively tiny stage, nestled
in a nook of the venue between the bastion of dance music, the Boiler
Room, and the smaller green and essential stages.

Many local acts have moved beyond this stage in their careers, with
Eskimo Joe and the John Butler Trio earning their spots in the main
arena, while Little Birdy followed Jebediah on the back stages.

And if you felt overwhelmed by the musical smorgasbord, you could
take it easy in a chill-out tent.

his trio earned a spot in the main arena of the Big Day Out.

rock’n’roll.; Surf’s up: Some of the more adventurous fans had a go
at crowd surfing, seen here during Grinspoon’s performance.

Pilibos Armenian School: Kicking off the 35th Anniversary With Music
and Martinis

Los Angeles, CA — On January 29th members of the Rose and Alex Pilibos
Armenian School community gathered together to kick off the school’s
thirty-fifth anniversary celebrations at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Takvor
and Armine Bedrossian. With over two hundred parents, alumni, and
supporters enjoying live music and martinis, the evening was a
celebration of 35 years of growth and success in the heart of the
Armenian community of Los Angeles.

The evening began with a blessing and well-wishes from Reverend Father
Viken Vassilian of Saint Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church and continued
with Dr. Maral Babian, the school counselor, welcoming and thanking the
guests for their continued support. Dr. Babian also gave the audience a
sneak preview of the 35th Anniversary Gala which will be held on May
1st, 2005 at Universal Studios with a special red-carpet entrance for
members of the Pilibos community.

The evening continued with the school principal, Dr. Viken Yacoubian,
thanking parents and alumni for their continued support towards
realizing the dream of building a school. “The 35th anniversary is a
time to celebrate the small school that started with a handful of
students and grew to become one of the best schools in the Armenian
Diaspora” noted Dr. Yacoubian. “Today, with your support, our students
are amongst the best, brightest, and most competitive students in the
United States. However, the 35th anniversary presents an opportunity
for our community to dream again and begin a new phase of Armenian
education in America” stated Dr. Yacoubian.

Throughout the evening recent graduates and alumni reconnected with
long-time members of the faculty while remembering the hopeful early
years of attending classes in a small home on Garfield Street. The
gracious hosts and members of the alumni, Mr. and Mrs. Bedrossian
recalled that “the difficulties in the early years, such as classes in
bungalows, strengthened our friendships with classmates and teachers
alike, particularly, our Armenian language and history teacher Mr.
Haigaz Terterian. We’re proud to be part of the Pilibos dream that has
become a reality.”

With an enrollment of over 750 students from kindergarten through 12th
grade, the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School serves children and
families throughout the Hollywood and greater Los Angeles community.

ASSEMBLY REACHES OUT TO ARMENIAN YOUTH AT OPPORTUNITY FAIRS
Birthright Armenia Promotes Work, Study Abroad

Washington, DC – In an effort to encourage college students to intern
in Armenia, the Assembly last week participated in a series of unique
opportunity fairs sponsored by Birthright Armenia and aimed at
promoting the importance of work, study and volunteerism in the
homeland.

The fairs, which took place in several major cities across the
U.S. and Canada, brought together for the first time a broad-based
network of organizations and young adults to discuss the plethora of
opportunity available in Armenia. Presenters included the ACYOA, the
Armenia Tree Project, the Armenian Volunteer Corps, the Armenian Youth
Federation, the Fund for Armenian Relief, Habitat for Humanity and
Land and Culture Organization.

“Our objective was to serve as the catalyst for these fairs in the
hopes that together, we can create a sustainable bridge between the
Diasporan youth and Armenia,” said Edele Hovnanian, Birthright Armenia
founder and Assembly Board of Directors Member. “By supporting those
organizations that offer youth programs in Armenia, we hope to make it
easier for even greater numbers of Diasporans to experience Armenia
and participate in its development.”

Intern Program Manager Alex Karapetian, who represented the Assembly
at fairs in Boston, New York and Washington, discussed the benefits of
interning in Armenia through the Assembly. The program, now in its
sixth year, offers college-aged students the chance to work in
Armenian government agencies, such as the Ministries of Finance and
Foreign Affairs. The eight-week summer internship is also designed to
include meetings with government and non-governmental officials, as
well as cultural and social opportunities.

Those applicants who are accepted to the Assembly’s internship program
in Armenia can apply to Birthright Armenia to have their travel
expenses covered in exchange for community service and other
requirements as determined by Birthright Armenia.

The Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based
nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness
of Armenian issues. It is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt membership
organization.

RELIGIOUS PROCESSION ON OCCASION OF VARDANANTS DAY TO TAKE PLACE IN
YEREVAN

02.02.2005 15:44

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ As reported by the press service of the Armenian
Diocese, tomorrow the youth of the Diocese are to march in a
religious procession along the central streets of Yerevan. The
procession is dedicated to the Day of Commander Vardan (Mamikonian)
and his 1036 fellow-fighters celebrated by the Armenian Apostolic
Church tomorrow. They were killed by the Persian soldiers in the
battlefield in year 451, during the period when the Persian governors
tried to force Armenians to renounce Christianity. The Armenian
clergy blessed the soldiers just on the battlefield during the war of
450-451. The procession is to start February 3 at 12.30 local time,
after the saint liturgy in the Zoravar Church where the St. Vardan
icon is placed. On their way the marchers will deliver booklets
describing the meaning of the holiday to the passers-by.

Armenia CB Head on Main Tasks and Objects of Development of Banking

HEAD OF CENTRAL BANK OF ARMENIA ON MAIN TASKS AND OBJECTS OF
DEVELOPMENT OF BANKING SYSTEM

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 2. ARMINFO. The main reforms in the banking system
of Armenia, being implemented during the last 5 years, were aimed at
implementation of 4 main tasks: to ensure growth and competitiveness
of banks, support for their liquidity and stability, perfection of the
mechanisms of management of risks, increase of the quality of produces
and services. Head of the Central Bank of Armenia Tigran Sargsian
stated during the 15th Conference of regional Group of Basle Committee
for Banking Supervision of the states of TransCaucasus, Central Asia
and Russia.

According to the main banker, high level of competition in the banking
system is seen during the last 2-3 years, especially in the market of
crediting and in particular in the segment of consumer crediting. Only
during 2004 the growth level of the portfolio of the consumer credits
in the banking system of the country increased by 60%. This process
accompanied by quite high rates of capitalization and general growth
of provision of crediting in the economy, which increased by 29% (64.7
bln drams) and by 37% (139.7 bln drams) respectively. The ration of
the assets of the banking system (363.6 bln drams) to the GDP makes up
19%.

Tigran Sargsian stressed that qualitative changes took place in the
sphere of liquidity control during the last years. Today the liquidity
level of the commercial banks is rather high (20-25%) and there are
serious problems with management of liquid assets, as the real sector
of the economy is not ready <for example> for large volume of credit
resources. He stressed that the Central Bank has introduced quite
effective methods of risk management. He said that the CB Board has
made a conceptual decision on gradual switchover to new stricter
standards of banking supervision, based on the principles
“Basle-2”. He mentioned that one should not blame only the real sector
for the low level of mediation. The real sector is not regulated
enough and is working in the shadow. The problem is also in the
spectrum of products and services, which the banking system may offer.

First of all, the problem often concerns the insufficient level of
management in the banks. “We have elaborated indices which allow to
estimate impartially the fact how the commercial banks manage this
problem. The necessity of introduction of rules of corporative
management is considered as a strategic direction”, Tigran Sargsian
stressed.

Stop gift of Indian Elephant to Armenia: Born Free Foundation:

Stop gift of Indian Elephant to Armenia: Born Free Foundation:
[World News]: London, Feb 1 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention
has been sought by an international wildlife and animal welfare charity to
prevent transfer of a Bangalore based elephant to Armenia.

“The Born Free Foundation urges the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh
to reconsider this gift and to call the move off,” its CEO Will Travers said
here last night.

He said the Foundation, founded by actors Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers,
believed that there were many other ways of improving relations between New
Delhi and Yerevan which would not involve the potential suffering and
possible demise of animals.

Virginia McKenna, OBE, who starred in the classic 1966 movie “Born Free”,
said “It is deeply disheartening that the custom of using animals as
diplomatic gifts still continues. Animals are not inanimate objects and
certainly deserve to be treated with due respect for their nature and needs.

“The proposed removal of an elephant from Bangalore to Yerevan Zoo
highlights the urgent need for this issue to be addressed on an
international basis, and I can only hope that it is not too late to change
hearts and minds. Not only for this elephant, but in future no more animals
should be used in this way.”

According to information received by the Foundation, the Elephant is due to
leave Bangalore and is destined for Yerevan. The exchange is in the form of
a diplomatic gift consigned by the Indian Prime Minister to his counterpart
in Armenia, the foundation cliamed. PTI

Iran Advocates Armenian-Azeri Cooperation

IRAN ADVOCATES ARMENIAN-AZERI COOPERATION

YEREVAN, JANUARY 31. ARMINFO. Iran’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Afshar
Sumeymani has supported the statement by his counterpart to Russia
Gulam Rza Shafai that the involvement of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the
North-South transport corridor will promote Azeri-Armenian
rapprochement.

Suleymani says that the restoration of the railroad communication
between Iran and Russia via Julfa, Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic,
will play an important role for ensuring the region’s secure economic
development. Iran advocates peace and cooperation in the region and
the Kazvin-Resht-Astara section of the North-South transport corridor
will give wider transit opportunities to Azerbaijan and Armenia while
the whole project will promote the development of their transport
infrastructures.

To remind, the Yerevan (Armenia)-Julfa (Azerbaijan)-Tebriz (Iran)
railroad was stalled in 1992 because of the Karabakh conflict. In the
Soviet times it carried 5 mln tons of cargo a year.
