Hurricane Katrina victims are at high risk for PTSD

New York, NY – On Monday, August 29th, the coastal areas of the Gulf
coast were hit by Hurricane Katrina. With wind speeds of up to 140 mph
(225 km/h), Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything in its path. The
hurricane first hit Louisiana and traveled 200 miles from west of New
Orleans to Pensacola in Florida. The states of Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama and Florida were hit. As of today, about 1000
people are reported dead as a result of this disaster.

The victims of Hurricane Katrina have lost their homes, main source of
employment, schools, and hospitals and desperately need basic
necessities. Governor Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana has asked for
federal assistance as the crisis is “beyond the capabilities of the
state and affected local governments”.

In response to this crisis, the Association for Disaster and Mass
Trauma Studies spearheaded by Dr. Anie Kalayjian, is implementing its
Mental Health Outreach Project (MHOP) in the Gulf Coast. The MHOP is
mobilizing teams of mental health volunteers to treat
survivors. Unfortunately, at least 15% of survivors will present
symptoms of PTSD that will require treatment. The MHOP will provide
psychosocial aide to those survivors who have lost their family
members, home and jobs.

The Association for Disaster & Mass Trauma Studies has been working
for the past 16 years providing Mental Health Outreach to disaster
stricken areas such as: Armenia (Post quake, 1988), Florida (Hurricane
Andrew), California (Northridge quake, 1994), Kobe, Japan (Post quake,
1995), Turkey (Post quake, 1999), New York (post 9/11, 2001), and most
recently post SE Asia tsunami in Sri Lanka. Kindly look at our
website for details of these works.

Please help the Mental Health Outreach Project reach out to the
victims of Katrina. You can donate by sending a check to the
Association for Disaster and Mass Trauma Studies, 185 East 85th
Street, Mezz #4, New York, NY 10028. If you are interesting in
volunteering, please go to and fill out an
application or email Dr. Anie Kalayjian at [email protected] .

NOT CONGRATULATED YET

«The court was not subject to pressures», said the newly elected head of the
Qanaqer-Zeytun community Arayik Qotanjyan during the press conference about
the elections in the community today in «Azdak» club.

After the elections were announced invalid, Arayik Qotanjyan did not even
hope that the trial would be held, but when it was, he was sure to win, «In
case of holding the trial there could be no other decision, as the forgery
and the crime were obvious».

The newly elected community head is worried that his opponent has not
congratulated him. Before that he had decided to give them an opportunity to
work with him, but today he said, «How shall we sit around a table and work
together? ».

By the way, the Qanaqer-Zeytun community head has not yet taken up his
responsibilities, but he announced beforehand, «There will be no drastic
steps, we will keep the hard-working officials and change the rest».

described them as “new opportunities for the development and

problems, the presidential press service told Mediamax.

HALONEN: ARMENIA SHOWS SERIOUS APPROACH TO EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Finnish President Tarja Halonen noted Armenian
authorities have done “much work to prepare the Plan of Actions within
the European Neighborhood Policy.” She stated it in the course of a
joint press conference with Armenian President Robert Kocharian. She
expressed hope for the Plan to be ready by the latter half of 2006,
when Finland will assume EU presidency. “Armenia shows very serious
approach to European integration,” she noted. In his turn R. Kocharian
expressed hope for the parties to come to agreement over the Plan
of Actions by the end of the year. The Armenian leader remarked,
“the process has been protracted, however it is not our guilt.” In
R. Kocharian’s words, the Plan of Actions provides for continuing
reforms in all respects and “Yerevan expects Finland to assume 2-3
directions it is most strong in during EU presidency.” The Armenian
and Finnish Presidents noted that the Armenian-Turkish relations and
the Karabakh settlement were discussed in the course of the talks in
Yerevan. T.

Halonen noted she had invited R. Kocharian to visit Finland on an
official call.

UN condemned Turkey’s cancellation of conference on massacre

UN condemned Turkey’s cancellation of conference on massacre of
Armenians during Ottoman Empire

14:46 2005-09-23
The European Commission on Friday condemned a Turkish court ruling
that ordered the cancellation of an academic conference dealing with
the massacre of Armenians during the Ottoman Empire.

Thursday’s ruling reflected badly on Turkey’s attempts to live up to
European democratic norms, just ahead of when it is to open entry
talks with the European Union, officials said.

“We strongly deplore this new attempt to prevent Turkish society from
freely discussing its history,” said EU spokeswoman Krisztina Nagy.

“The timing of this decision the day before the opening of the
conference looks like yet another provocation.” Nagy added that the
cancellation “illustrates the difficulties of Turkey, and in
particular of the judiciary, to ensure effective and uniform
implementation of the reforms in Turkey.”

She said the scrapping of the conference “will be reflected” in the
Commission’s regular progress report on Turkey’s reform plans, which
is to be released Nov. 9.

The conference was scheduled to deal with one of the most sensitive
issues in Turkish politics, the killings of Armenians during the
collapse of the Ottoman Empire around the time of World War I, which
an increasing number of countries have officially recognized as
genocide.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also condemned the
court’s decision.

Nevertheless, Turkey’s government has tried hard to counter an
Armenian campaign to have the killings recognized as genocide.

Turkey says the killings took place during civil unrest, and backing
the genocide claim in Turkey can be a cause for prosecution.

EU officials warn attempts to curb basic human rights such as freedom
of expression would reflect badly on its efforts to join the
25-nation EU. In its negotiating mandate for Turkey, the EU warns it
will freeze entry talks if Turkey backtracks on human rights
commitments.

Earlier this month the EU condemned a legal case against one of the
country’s most acclaimed contemporary writers, novelist Orhan Pamuk.

EU lawmakers at the European Parliament also announced they were
considering sending observers to monitor the trial of Pamuk, who has
been charged with insulting the country’s national character for his
comments on Turkey’s killing of Armenians and Kurds, and could face
up to three years in prison.

Senior EU officials say the case violates the European Convention on
Human Rights.

TARJA HALONEN: ARMENIA MAY HAVE MORE INTEGRATED FUTURE

24.09.2005 04:18

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Owing to democracy and rapid economic development Armenia
may have a much more integrated future, Finnish President Tarja Halonen
stated. «Finland and the EU are interested in all of the region and Armenia
has got a good opportunity to promote relations with Finland and the EU.
Armenia has a European history in many respects,» she stated. «The European
Neighborhood Policy can be a move forward. Each country in the region is an
interesting partner to the EU and it depends on you how this interest is
realized,» T. Halonen remarked. «Armenia has a rich history, you experienced
hardships as well, however you may have a better future if you are active
and strongly develop economy, human rights, rule of law and good
administration. Thus, I call you to examine the opportunities the European
Neighborhood Policy provides for,» she stated. Touching upon the prospects
of settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh issue, T. Halonen remarked, «I
consider the fact that presidential election in Armenia was held in 2003 and
the next will take place in 2008 a very important fact. I hope you will use
the time left till the next election and will try to solve the conflict. You
should inspire yourself to make decisions and move forward,» reported
Mediamax.

TURKISH FM CONDEMNED CANCELLATION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CONFERENCE

23.09.2005 07:56

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul condemned on Friday
the decision by a Turkish court canceling a conference on the Armenian
Genocide. As reported by Yerkir Online, Gul voiced his concern that the
court’s decision would likely weaken Turkey’s position on the eve of the
Turkey-EU talks on Turkey’s accession to the Union. The conference entitled
” Ottoman Armenians During the Decline of the Empire: Issues of Scientific
Responsibility and Democracy’ was scheduled to open today at the Bosphorus
University in Istanbul. The organizers of the conference have called a
meeting to coordinate their further actions, with an aim to hold the
conference at a different university. The Turkish press, in turn, has raised
their voice condemning the court’s ruling, calling it a serious blow to the
country’s image. The decision, however, was welcomed by the members of the
Turkish Retired Officers’ Union, the chairman of the History Society and the
Union of Lawyers, which have already rendered conferences.

Internet. Nabaztag Le Lapin Magique

INTERNET. NABAZTAG LE LAPIN MAGIQUE

Le Telegramme, France
18 septembre 2005

premier objet communicant grand

New York, ou a Tokyo.

nouveaux services. En attendant, Violet prepare la version anglaise,
prevue fin octobre.
