"I AM SURPRISED THAT ISSUE OF COMMON CANDIDATE IS PAID SO MUCH ATTENTION TO," RA PRESIDENT SAYS

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 14, NOYAN TAPAN. "I am a little surprised that the
issue of the common candidate is paid so much attention to by both
politicians and especially by people considering themselves political
scientists. I do not understand what the common candidate means," RA
President Robert Kocharian said this on November 14 in response to the
journalists’ question about opposition’s common candidate. According
to him, for him, it is unintelligible on what basis that union should
be, whether it will be an end in itself or there are ideological
communities and unity of programs.

"We had such a sad example with the Ardarutiun (Justice) bloc, when
people having absolutely different approaches united with each other
for a single purpose, in order to have a seat in the parliament. And
the final fate of that bloc is well known to all of you," R. Kocharian
said. He added that President’s post is not divided and "one person
will receive the prize in these elections." According to R. Kocharian,
by the new Constitution, the President even will have no possibility
to give out portfolios to "political forces and figures" under his
subordination, as the executive power is formed by the parliament,
and the distribution of forces in the parliament is already clear.

According to R. Kocharian, a question also emerges, whether people
considering that Armenia should join NATO and people supporting
deepening relations with Russia can work with each other. "I was
surprised, but some political forces proved to be in Armenia, who
consider that our main partner should be Turkey and Azerbaijan. I
did not expect such pro-Turkish policy even from ANM and did not
think that Armenia can appear in Turkey’s lap in the future. If there
are people, who share those approaches, or there are such political
parties, let them unite, but state what future they see for Armenia,"
R. Kocharian said.

Over 150 students gather to protest US Representative Jane Harman at UCLA
Community outraged at Congresswoman’s retreat on human rights legislation

Los Angeles, CA – The University of California, Los Angeles community
protested Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA 36th district), during her
visit to the university on November 10th, from 6-7 PM.

Over 150 students joined the protest outside the Tom Bradley
International Hall next to campus, filling up the streets with their
large numbers and loud chants.

The Armenian Students’ Association and the Armenian Grad Students’
Association at UCLA hosted the protest and were joined by fellow
students from campus as well as the Armenian Youth Federation, the
Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Shant Student Association, and
members Ferrahian High School’s UCLA Model United Nations team.

`Having the UCLA community together protesting Harman’s hypocritical
actions sent a strong message,’ Chris Khachatryan, President of the
ASA at UCLA, added, `This goes beyond the issue of the Armenian
Genocide, because it is about putting humanity over politics, whether
it is Darfur, Rwanda, or the Jewish Holocaust.’

Nurit Katz, President of the Graduate Student Association at UCLA,
Michelle Lyon of the Undergraduate Student Association at UCLA,
Katrina Garcia of the Darfur Action Committee at UCLA, as well as Arek
Santikian on behalf of the Armenian community at UCLA delivered
remarks in support of the protesters during the evening’s event.

"Our representatives need to have the courage to do the right thing by
voting on this resolution now and not allowing threats to get in the
way of upholding American Values and taking a stand against genocide,"
said Katz in her address.

Harman was visiting UCLA to receive the Jacoby International Award,
given to individuals who have enhanced international and intercultural
understanding through volunteer or professional endeavors.

The UCLA community and constituents of the Congresswoman are outraged
at Harman’s actions regarding House Resolution 106, which seeks to
affirm the United States’ record on the Armenian Genocide.

While publicly endorsing House Resolution 106, the Congresswoman
secretly authored a letter which was released publicly on October 3,
2007 in which she urged the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee to prevent consideration of the legislation.

`Saying that it’s not the right time is an extremely dangerous
argument,’ argued Raffi Kassabian, Executive Officer of the AGSA at
UCLA. `It gives inconsistent allies like Turkey the political muscle
to bully the United States and allows our foreign policy and freedom
of expression to be dictated by foreign powers,’ he added.

The government of Turkey has been engaged in an ongoing campaign of
genocide denial and has remained maliciously opposed to this and
similar resolutions in the past. In its efforts to defeat H.Res.106,
Turkey has spent millions of dollars on high-priced lobbyists and
public relations firms in an attempt to intimidate the US Congress
into avoiding consideration of the resolution.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire is a tragedy
of the world history, Lithuanian Defense Minister Juozas Olekas told

years of soviet occupation in 1940-1948," he said.

"Armenia and Lithuania should protect historical memory to ensure
peace for next generations irrespective of nationality," he added.

"I am glad that Armenia and Lithuania can be full-grown members of
the international community. We can create and face up the future,"
the Minister said, Novosti Armenia reports.

Moscow, 7 November: Russia will withdraw its last military base from
Georgia ahead of schedule, the commander of the Russian Ground Troops,
Army Gen Aleksey Maslov said on Wednesday [7 November].

"Russia plans to complete the withdrawal of the last, 12th military
base stationed in the Georgian city of Batumi ahead of schedule,"
Maslov said.

"Since military hardware, arms and our property from the 12th military
base in Batumi have been practically withdrawn to Russia and the 102nd
military base in Gyumri (Armenia), we plan to start the transfer of
the Batumi base’s infrastructure to the Georgian side before the end
of 2007," the general said.

The last train with arms and property from Russia’s 12th military
base in Batumi will leave Georgia for Russia on 8 November, an aide
to commander of the Russian Ground Troops, Col Igor Konashenkov,
said earlier in the day.

"We are finishing the preparation for the departure of the last
military train with military hardware and property from the 12th
Russian military base in Batumi," he said,

"The train will leave for Russia on Thursday morning. It will take
12 vehicles and property of about 55 tonnes," Konashenkov said.

"All hardware has already been loaded on the platforms and been
examined by the Georgian side. This is the last train to leave
Georgia for Russia with military hardware and property from the
Russian military bases in Georgia," he said.

Another train will leave Batumi in the middle of November to bring
additional supplies for the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri,
Armenia. "That will complete the withdrawal of military property
and hardware from the Russian military bases in Georgia to Russia,"
Konashenkov said.

Russia has withdrawn over 500 pieces of military hardware (about 350
motor vehicles and over 150 armoured vehicles) and almost 2,000 tonnes
of other property from the Russian military bases in Georgia in 2007.

Four trains were dispatched to Armenia for the 102nd military base
in Gyumri.
