ANKARA: A Faulty Description Of Ignatius

A FAULTY DESCRIPTION OF IGNATIUS

Turkey

ISTANBUL – The prime ministerial walkout from the Davos summit
last Thursday generated a lot of blame, directed explicitly at the
moderator, David Ignatius, and implicitly at his identity, Jewish
and Armenian. Except that Ignatius is not.

Many Turkish newspapers, including the Hurriyet Daily News &
Economic Review, reported over the weekend that Ignatius was of
Jewish and Armenian origins, based on a Wikipedia entry: "Ignatius,
(born to a Jewish family May, 26 1950) an American journalist and
novelist of Armenian descent." Later, however, Wikipedia modified
content on Ignatius’profile page to say he "is of Armenian descent
with ancestors from Nor Kharberd." Ignatius is not Jewish. How the
mistake occurred is unknown but it was soon corrected in the Internet
encyclopedia early Saturday.

The origins of the moderator was reported in Turkish media for
different reasons. Some conservative newspapers tried to show his
ancestry as proof of his "biased" stance. For others, his origin was
provided only as an informative detail for people who had not heard
of him.

The daily Radikal, wrote in one of its captions "Jewish Journalist"
for Ignatius last Friday while reporting the heated debate between
Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
in Davos.

"The first lesson of this, is of course, that journalists should eye
Wikipedia warily," said David Judson, Daily News editor-in-chief. "It’s
a great resource, but it is assembled by volunteers and we need to
remember that.

The second is that in a highly combustible story such as this one,
extra care needs to be given to ethnic monikers as they can easily
become the tool of demagogues.

And it’s hard to escape the conclusion that there was some demagogic
tampering with Wikipedia in the midst of this dust-up."

Judson regrets contribution of paper to misunderstanding Judson said
this represented a failure of standards at the Daily News and added he
apologized to readers and Ignatius for any contribution the newspaper
may have made to the misunderstanding.

Ceyda Karan, the foreign news editor of daily Radikal blamed that
newspaper’s error on an intern downloading of information from
Wikipedia. After the newspaper was published, she said, they noticed
the mistake and corrected it in Radikal’s Internet version.

According to Karan, Wikipedia had lost credibility as a result. "They
claim to offer accurate information. They should have been more
careful," she said.

Although there should be no problem citing the origin of a person,
it can become controversial in cases such as this and it is better
not to mention it, Karan said. "We talked about that later in our
editorial meeting. We believe it is not necessary to mention his ethnic
origins. He is an American journalist and that’s all," said Karan. She
also said it’s been a good lesson for their intern too about Wikipedia.

Ignatius identified himself as an Armenian-American in an Oct. 14, 2007
Washington Post article discussing the history of Turkish-Armenian
relations. He said in that article that some of his own relatives
perished in the events of 1915. He has been variously described in
the Turkish press as having roots in the Anatolian city of Harput
and also as having roots in Armenia.

A colleague and friend of Ignatius, CNNTurk correspondent Ahu Ozyurt,
said underlining Ignatius’ ethnic or religious origins in the Turkish
media did not do any good but only served to increase racism in Turkey.

Islamist media, especially television, uses people’s origins too
extensively to target people, such as Ignatius, even though he is
not part of any kind of anti-Turkey lobby, said Ozyurt, who reports
for daily Milliyet as well as CNNTurk.

"Ignatius joined in all the editorial board meetings at the Washington
Post that occur with a Turkish representative," said Ozyurt Ignatius
is a good journalist who really knows about the Middle East and has
a great respect for Ottoman heritage, "He uses the Ottoman term Pasha
in his novels for strong characters."

Referring to the false information in Wikipedia, Ozyurt said it could
have been a mistaken entry or there may be another reason. She said
it was carelessness by Turkish journalists, however, who published
this information from Wikipedia. "Wikipedia is not a primary source,
especially for journalists.

I know it was late at night when newspapers in Turkey went to print
that day, but they should still check this," said Ozyurt. Moreover,
Ignatius is not an unknown person in Turkey and Turkish media. He
was in Turkey to promote his recent movie "Body of Lies" around two
months ago, said Ozyurt.

Despite repeated calls and emails to Ignatius, the Daily News could
not reach him. He had said to friends that he would not talk about
the issue. "I think he believes he has been pulled into a fight in
Davos that he is not a part of," said Ozyurt.

Wikipedia had not responded to the Daily News questions when the
newspaper went to press.

Vic Darchinyan Unleashes A Tidal Wave Of Trash Talk

VIC DARCHINYAN UNLEASHES A TIDAL WAVE OF TRASH TALK
Tim Starks

The Queensberry Rules, MA
Jan 3 2009

At least 50% of the awesomeness of this Saturday’s bout pitting Vic
Darchinyan against Jorge Arce has been the pre-fight trash talk. And
while it’s not that Arce hasn’t had plenty interesting to say —
"When I am cut, I am content. My blood pleases me" — Darchinyan has
spit out so many nasty things toward Arce that it’s been a rather
one-sided affair. The above video is but one example. He’s insulted
Arce’s trademark lollipop; he’s had about a billion quips involving
Arce’s name, some obvious and some not ("Chicken a la Arce"); and
he’s threatened to knock out members of Arce’s management team. All
while saying Arce has "a big mouth." And we still have a little less
than a week to go.

So before we hit the official preview later in the week for this
junior bantamweight (115 lbs.) showdown, I figured we’d hit the high
points of the Darchinyan smack, which is too voluminous to compile
in toto without the aid of an encyclopedia manufacturer.

One note — several of Darchinyan’s quotes come via news release, and
there’s a strong chance Vic got a little, shall we say, assistance
massaging the language of his attack. Most likely from Gary Shaw
Productions PR man Fred Sternburg, a punsmith if there ever was
one. Whatever. It’s all entertaining, and Vic’s name is on all
of it. Therefore, here we go: in no particular order, the best of
Darchinyan verbal assaults over the last couple months.

Concise: "I am going to demolish him, destroy him and knock him out.

He is going to remember me all his life." (news conference transcript)

Extracurricular: "I am upset with Beltran – the manager of
Arce… He should keep his mouth shut and let Arce and myself do
the talking. After I knockout Arce I will go to his corner and
thank him for fighting me but then I might knock out Fernando
Beltran." (FightNews)

When Arce missed a mandatory weigh-in, Darchinyan dropped a
reference to a serial weigh-in offender: "Do you know the weigh
to San Jorge? Maybe he should switch to sugar-free lollipops to
facilitate his weight loss? I just hope Jose Luis Castillo isn’t
his nutritionist!" (news release)

If Arce is from Mexico, then there’s an opportunity for Vic to raise
comparisons… and Toy Story references?: "I can’t get enough of
Mexican fighters. They bounce real good off the canvas when I hit
them. Let’s see, I’ve stopped Cristian Mijares, Victor Burgos and
Luis Maldonado over the past two years. Unlike Jorge Arce, those
three fighters were very tough hombres. Defeating Arce won’t take much
training. It won’t even be a fight for me — more like pest control.

I’m going to swat that Spanish Fly. How do you take a guy like
Arce seriously? He sucks on lollipops and wears a cowboy hat from
a toy store. He looks like ‘Woody’ from the movie ‘Toy Story.’ I
can picture him running around his house on a broom pretending he’s
riding a horse. He’s a regular Schlepalong Cassidy. When I finally
meet him at the press conference do I say ‘Hola Jorge’ or ‘Howdy,
Doody?’" (news release)

"The Raging Bull" throws some more Mexican-oriented quips in there:
"If Arce thinks he has a snowball’s chance in hell of beating me
than he’s a bigger sucker than those lollipops he chews on. Arce
shouldn’t be worrying about me running for the hills. He should be
worrying about me running him out of boxing! The last real ring test
he had was against Cristian Mijares in 2007 and we all know how that
ended. It was a murderous unanimous decision victory for Mijares,
scored 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111. And everyone saw what I did to
Mijares on November 1. Arce is going to be my human piata. It will be
like a Chihuahua going against a bull…a raging bull!" (news release)

A lengthy screed following welterweight (147 lbs.) Shane Mosley’s
defeat of Antonio Margarito: "If Arce watched the fight, then he
knows his future, which will come to pass when we meet on February
7. If I were Arce’s team, I’d MapQuest the quickest routes from
the Honda Center to John Wayne Airport so he can get out of town
fast. Unlike Mosley I am not waiting until the ninth round for the
knockout. I am going to stop Farce quickly so he can take his black
eyes on the red-eye out that same night. Whether Mexico allows him
back in, well that is another issue. I was looking forward to facing
him last Saturday at our press conference in Los Angeles, but he
did not show. As my promoter Gary Shaw said, they decided to serve
‘Chicken a la Arce’ two weeks early. What a shock. Mexicans are great
fighters. Arce is a disgrace to all of them. He is a clown. He should
change his ring name from ‘Travieso’ to ‘Travesty’ because that’s
what he is. I promise that I will demolish him just like I demolished
Mijares. I will let him be a coward for the first two rounds where he
can run around the ring. He can even wear his stupid cowboy hat. But
after that, I am going to be on him like a mongoose on a cobra. He
does not stand a chance. Interim champion is the perfect description
of his so-called title reign." (news release)

He’d earlier bragged about this being the "year of the bull," but
why not switch it up and send it the other way and then keep mocking
the "interim" titlist designation?: "It’s the Year of the Ox, how
appropriate that I’m fighting Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce, who is as dumb
as one. I’m going to blow him away like a Santa Ana wind.

On February 7, I’m going to teach Arce just how interim his title
really is. What’s black and blue and red all over? Jorge Arce by
round three — assuming he lasts that long." (news release)

Darchinyan really wants you to know that he thinks Arce has a low
IQ: "He’s been hit in the head so much. He is not very smart for a
boxer. He is dumb." (news conference)

You can practically hear the Armenian accent: "Arce is a good puncher;
he’s had good knockouts. But I am going to play him like baby." (news
conference)

A lot is going to happen afterward, first to Arce: "He’s just going
for a big punch. He’s not a big puncher. I’m going to punish him. I
want to thank his management because they don’t want him anymore. They
just want to write him off after this loss." (news conference)

Then to the entire division: "After this fight, I don’t think anyone
(in the super flyweights) is going to fight me because they are going
to see what I am going to do with Arce," he said. "I’m not going to
wait for them. I’m going to move up to bantamweight. If they can move
up to bantamweight [118] and win any title, the door is open for them
any time." (The Age)

Since Arce is the one with a "big mouth," I suppose I’ll throw Arce’s
best attacks line in there, from a news conference: "He has said things
I don’t appreciate and it makes me work a little harder, but when we
get in the ring I am going to hurt him. I hope he stands there and
fights for a while so I can really hurt him. I hope he doesn’t fall
early because I want to give him a lot of punches. I know he can take
a lot of punches, so I hope he is ready for them… I’ve been watching
his videos. He’s just a one-handed fighter. All he has is the left
hand. He’s fast and he’s strong, but once you take the left hand away
he’s done. Nonito Donaire proved that. He can also be knocked out in
one punch. But not me. I’m not moving up in weight. I’m moving down."

And lastly, an exchange… Arce: "He thinks he is an intimidator. He
always tells people what he will do and they get intimidated. But, I’m
not that type of guy. His words won’t affect me. He can say and talk
about what he is going to do to me in the ring, but I’m not going to
fold. I’m a bigger guy than him. He won’t intimidate me." Darchinyan,
asked about Arce’s claim that he wouldn’t be intimidated: "I don’t
care. I’m going to knock him out." (news conference)

Armenia Able To Join EU, But Public Efforts Necessary, Polish Ambass

ARMENIA ABLE TO JOIN EU, BUT PUBLIC EFFORTS NECESSARY, POLISH AMBASSADOR SAYS

ARKA
Feb 2, 2009

YEREVAN, February 2. /ARKA/. Armenia can become an EU-member if public
puts forth necessary efforts, Ambassador of Poland to Armenia Tomasz
Knothe said during Monday discussions on the Eastern Partnership
program.

"Public involvement is essential, as tremendous efforts are necessary
to become an EU member-state," he said. "Poland has passed this
difficult test," the ambassador continued.

He emphasized the role of bringing laws in line with European criteria,
as well as economic and political reforms in achieving this goal.

Everything seems to go smooth when joining EU is just a political
objective, Ambassador Knothe said, adding the most compacted task is
"to study many volumes."

He urged Armenia to revise laws and bring economic standards in line
with European criteria to be able to join EU.

Citing public polls in Poland, the ambassador said over 70 percent
of the respondents are content with Poland’s integration into EU.

No wonder Poland aspired to join EU, taking into account many positive
sides of this integration, Ambassador Knothe concluded.

Within the framework of his visit to Davos the President of the
Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, had a meeting with the President
of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus. The Presidents discussed a broad framework
of issues targeted at the deepening of Armenian-Lithuanian relations.

President Sargsyan said the successful experience Lithuania and other
Baltic states in the direction of European integration could be useful
for Armenia. Valdas Adamkus, in turn, expressed willingness to
cooperate, support and exchange experience on the path of Armenia’s
European integration.

At the request of the President of Lithuania, Serzh Sargsyan presented
the approaches of official Yerevan on the negotiations on Karabakh
settlement and the current stage of Armenian-Turkish dialogue.

President Sargsyan thanked Valdas Adamkus for the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide by the Lithuanian Seim, noting that `what happened in
1915 was a national and universal tragedy and a very sensitive issue
for every Armenian.’

President Sargsyan informed Valdas Adamkus about the intention of the
Armenian side to open a diplomatic representation of Armenia in
Lithuania.

Valdas Adamkus invited Serzh Sargsyan to visit Lithuania.

State Minister Jean Ogassapian on Tuesday denounced the pre-dawn
attack on Harak Okian, a founder of the Free Lebanese Armenian Movement
(FLAM) and said identity of the assailants is known.

Ogassapian also urged police to arrest the assailants who opened fire
at Okian in Beirut’s predominantly Armenian district of Burj Hammoud.

FLAM sources said Okian was hit by a bullet in the spinal cord which
totally paralyzed him.

Ogassapian did not disclose identity of the assailants, but blamed
the attack on "some factions within the opposition."

But FLAM sources blamed the killing on a "local official of an Armenian
political party in Burj Hammoud."

Is British Petroleum To Regulate The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict?

IS BRITISH PETROLEUM TO REGULATE THE NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT?
Karine Ter-Sahakyan

PanARMENIAN.Net
24.01.2009 GMT+04:00

Not participating in the OSCE Minsk Group efforts to regulate the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Great Britain is trying to force her
interests through various organizations.

The desire to please the client at all costs very often has a dismal
end. It becomes especially apparent in people who, to the best of
their ability, try to give the black for the white and when settling
conflicts are reluctant to consider others’ viewpoints. Moreover,
when discussing a conflict, for some reason they Â"do not noticeÂ"
the public, at the same time taking refuge in democracy.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Another Â"recipeÂ" for regulating the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been published by Thomas de Vaal:
"The Karabakh Trap. Threats and Dilemmas of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Conflict. Rough Draft for Discussion." It was published in the
notorious website Mediaforum.az, which Â"hit the big timeÂ" as the
spreader of the fabricated story of "selling Russian military hardware
to Armenia".

It is boring and unpleasant to read the whole material that counts
to 20 pages, especially when behind it distinctly show the ears
of British Petroleum and those of many other organizations that,
roughly speaking, have been living on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
for 20 years already. The report is so pro-Azerbaijani that it gives
the impression it was written in Baku, not in London. By the way,
it may in fact be so. Judge yourselves.

Â"Today the defeated party feels more and more confident and
is impatiently waiting for the change of status-quo in their
favour. The present situation, in which in addition to the disputed
Nagorno-Karabakh region there are seven more Azerbaijani regions fully
or partially occupied by the Armenian troops, cannot last endlessly. "I
don’t want my son to inherit this problem, that is why I am for the
war," said an educated Azeri of 30, and the number of advocates of
this view is rapidly risingÂ". By the way, this kind of references
to certain Armenians and Azeri are typical examples of this sort of
journalism which we mistakenly call western style.

But let us go on. Â"Armenians take Nagorno-Karabakh as an Armenian
territory liberated from Azerbaijan. The young generation that grows
up in NKR and in Armenia does not know any other NK region and always
hears various statements claiming that the seven occupied Azerbaijani
territories are in reality Â"liberated territoriesÂ" that on no account
should be given away. But Armenia keeps on suffering economically and
the international community criticizes her for the conflict. "Karabakh
is a stick with which we are always hit on the face," noted an Armenian
officialÂ". Even if we do not pay attention to the writing style, in
fact we have been hearing and reading it all for more than a year. In
this connection one of the joint round tables can be recalled, when
the representatives of Azerbaijan dwelt on their oil for so long that
Armenians could not stand it any longer and asked quite reasonably:
"Do you have anything else except oil?"

Yet, let us continue with the citations from de Vaal. Â"It is an
undisputable fact that Azerbaijan is growing thanks to its rich oil
reserves. But no one knows what future the country awaits with such
dynamic changes in view. Its international reputation is much weighty
today than it used to be about ten years ago, and public figures
of Azerbaijan today compensate the deficiency of respect which,
in their opinion, they used to feel for years. In the words of an
international representative that now lives in Baku "At the meetings
with diplomats, foreign parliamentarians and NGO representatives Azeri
officials make statements like "You need us more than we need you"
or "Don’t use that tone of voice when talking to us"Â". On June 26
a grandiose military parade was organized in Baku. It was the first
parade since 1992 and gave Azerbaijan an opportunity to show the
whole world its newly-obtained military equipment.

After the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline was put into operation in
2006 Azerbaijani oil profits rapidly rose. According to the latest
forecasts of British Petroleum, if additional investments are made in
Azeri-Chirag-Gyuneshli "the peak of oil production will be reached
not in 2012 as it was forecasted before, but in six-seven years’
time." But the interesting point is that the author also notes drop
of oil price and world crisis. Thus, Azerbaijan is either on another
planet or it does not really make out anything it writes about.

The situation in Armenia is bad and we know it ourselves. Â"Armenia
spent most of 2008 in the clutches of political crisis. The ongoing
negative echoes of the Presidential Elections held in February and the
tragic violence of March 1 in Yerevan led to a split in the society
and still remain a problem for the new President Serzh SargsyanÂ". It
comes out that it is democracy to disperse and prohibit demonstrations
in Baku, ban foreign radio stations, arrest and beat journalists,
whereas dispersal of protesters who had become unruly after the ten-day
tolerance of the authorities is considered to be violence. If it is
so, de Vaal is right. Unfortunately, human rights advocates use the
victims of March 1 in their own favour, overlooking the chief offender
of the occurrence. However, all this is only indirectly related to
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Let us refer to another citation from the British Â"expertÂ". Â"During
the year of 2008 universal support of territorial integrity of
Azerbaijan has become a signal indicating that unlike Kosovo NKR
cannot receive recognition and her status will remain fragile until
a peaceful agreement is signedÂ", writes de Vaal.

As a matter of principle, in our opinion de Vaal should have begun
his publication exactly with this statement. Such kind of experts
are unable to realize or acknowledge that NKR is a fully sovereign
state. NKR is a reality; it is the Artsakh community which has its
own world outlook – tough and appropriate. How is it possible to deal
with the region for years and not understand most obvious things or
at least study the history? According to Karabakh experts not one
empire was overthrown because of having underestimated Artsakh. So,
why there should be made an exception for the West? Other countries
at least had flair to recognize that Artsakh is a subject and it
has its say. Even the USSR, whose power and potential was beyond
all comparison with other Â"pretendersÂ", realized that and created
an autonomous region. Thus, it must be admitted that the attempt of
British Petroleum failed and it was quite predictable.

We should only add that not taking part in the OSCE Minsk Group
efforts to regulate the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Great Britain is
trying to force her interests through various organizations whose
alleged aim is peacekeeping.

ANKARA: There Are 25 Different Ergenekons In Turkey

‘THERE ARE 25 DIFFERENT ERGENEKONS IN TURKEY’

Today’s Zaman
Jan 26 2009
Turkey

The Ergenekon investigation presents clues pointing to the perpetrators
of unsolved murders in Turkey and the figures who orchestrated social
upheaval.

Documents seized in the houses of suspected Ergenekon members provide
answers to the sensational murders and show the motives behind such
incidents. One document found in retired Brig. Gen. Veli Kucuk’s house
provides a great deal of evidence on the assassinations of Ugur Mumcu,
Ozdemir Sabancı and Uzeyir Garih, as well as a helicopter accident
in which former Gendarmerie Commander Gen. EÅ~_ref Bitlis died.

The document indicates that Mumcu was assassinated because he possessed
sensitive documentation on 100,000 weapons allegedly sent from Turkey
to Jalal Talabani in January 1991.

The same document stresses that Bitlis was killed 25 days later
because he also had information on the weapons.

Council of State attack

The Ergenekon investigation further sheds lights on the Council of
State attack perpetrated by Alparslan Arslan on May 17, 2006. Council
member Mustafa Yucel Ozbilgin died in the attack and three other
members were injured. It was argued that the attack was staged
because of the Council of State’s recent decision on the headscarf
issue. The funeral held for Ozbilgin was turned into a demonstration
against the government. The military appeared at the funeral with a
large delegation. Even former Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit attended
despite health problems. Shortly after the funeral, Ecevit had a
brain hemorrhage and died while in a coma without actually knowing
the real motive behind the attack.

The Ergenekon investigation further sheds lights on the Council of
State attack perpetrated by Alparslan Arslan on May 17, 2006.

The case was subsequently resolved because the executioner was
apprehended at the scene of the crime. It has become evident that
the hand grenades Arslan had previously used in an attack against the
Cumhuriyet daily were from the same series seized in a shanty house in
Umraniye. Osman Yıldırım, arrested in connection with the Council
of State attack, told Ergenekon prosecutor Zekeriya Oz that Kucuk
gave him the grenades at a meeting in AtaÅ~_ehir on April 27, 2006.

It also became clear that Arslan was serving as the legal counsel
of DoguÅ~_ Factoring, owned by retired Captain Muzaffer Tekin,
who is currently under arrest in connection with the Ergenekon
investigation, and that he had a badge from Ulusal TV, run by Dogu
Perincek, another suspect currently in custody. The Supreme Court
of Appeals, considering these developments, has decided to merge the
Ergenekon and the Council of State cases.

Uzeyir Garih murder resolved

The murder of Garih, a Jewish-Turkish businessman, has also been
illuminated by the Ergenekon investigation. The perpetrator of the
murder, Yener Yermez, was caught and told the police that he murdered
Garih for money. However, this raised suspicions because the murderer
did not steal Garih’s Rolex watch. Yermez had also been serving in
the military as an enlisted private.

In a letter he sent from prison to Fehmi Koru, a columnist for the
YeniÅ~_afak daily, Yermez claimed that he had taken responsibility
for the murder in return for a payment in the amount of $1.5
million. However, this allegation was not considered at that time. The
Ergenekon investigation revealed that retired Col. Fikri Karadag,
also under arrest in connection with the Ergenekon case, was the
commander of the military unit where Yermez was serving as a private.

This military quarter also rose to prominence in the past when it
became evident that retired Gen. Habil Kucuk had contact with Osman
Gurbuz, also known as YeÅ~_il, the notorious executioner of the deep
state. Kucuk served when the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attempted
to assassinate Chief of General Staff Gen. Dogan GureÅ~_. At the time
of Garih’s murder, Oktay Yıldırım was a noncommissioned officer
in the Hasdal military unit. In consideration of these findings,
the Ergenekon prosecutors decided to interrogate Yermez. According
to the allegations, Kucuk ordered the execution of Garih because
he refused to provide financial support for a coup attempt led by
Ergenekon in Azerbaijan.

Gazi incidents

Ersönmez Yarbay(L.) The statement by an anonymous witness testifying
in the Ergenekon investigation gives detailed information on
a coffeehouse raid in the Gazi neighborhood, where 17 people were
killed in 1995.

The statement by an anonymous witness testifying in the Ergenekon
investigation gives detailed information on a coffeehouse raid in the
Gazi neighborhood, where 17 people were killed in 1995. The witness
argues that Kucuk and Osman Gurbuz sponsored the whole event and
that mob leader Sedat Peker and his men carried out the attacks in
an attempt to escalate tension between Alevis and Sunnis. It was also
noticed that Kucuk played role in making sure that Peker was exempted
from military service with a fake health report.

Tuncay Guney’s confessions

In 2001 a great deal of information was obtained about the Ergenekon
organization. A former journalist, Tuncay Guney, provided extensive
information in his statement to a former head of the intelligence
unit at the İstanbul Police Department, Adil Serdar Sacan, about
Ergenekon. Interestingly, Sacan was also arrested in connection with
the Ergenekon case. It turns out he hid the information provided
by Guney. The relevant question here is why effective action was
not taken against this organization despite the massive amount of
information obtained in 2001.

Guney, who has since converted to Judaism and currently lives in
Canada, argued that Turkey sent 24,000 weapons to Talabani for use
against the PKK, whereas 6,000 of these 24,000 were delivered to
Cemil Bayık, one of the top leaders of the PKK.

Guney further argued that Bitlis was murdered because he was aware
of the delivery to Bayık. Guney was a prolific source for the
Ergenekon investigation; however, there were concerns and doubts
about his reliability.

Yarbay: There are more Ergenekon-like organizations

Former Ankara deputy Ersönmez Yarbay, the chairman of the
parliamentary commission set up to investigate the murder of Ugur
Mumcu, says there are 25 Ergenekon-like organizations in Turkey. Yarbay
further states that Ergenekon was eliminated because it pushed the
boundaries of the current system and that Mumcu was murdered to
escalate tension among secular circles.

Noting that the visible increase in the number of unresolved murders
during the period between 1991 and 1995 shows a change in the strategy
for combating terrorism, Yarbay argues that this change was the
introduction of terror strategies to deal with terror.

"Because of this policy change, thousands of unresolved murders
have been committed. The number of criminals within the state also
increased. As a result of this, those who were forced to commit crimes
back then have continued to do so until now."

Recalling that one of the 20 possible scenarios regarding the Mumcu
murder fits well with the arguments of Tuncay Guney, Yarbay also
says they have found no evidence showing that Mumcu was murdered by
Israeli secret service agents.

"Secular circles were provoked by secular institutions back then
in Turkey in an attempt to exploit their sensitivity and to make
sure that they would become harsher in their stance. People like
Mumcu were actually killed by people with similar worldviews. He was
murdered to stir up secular sentiments. The murder of Ugur Mumcu,
Bahriye Ucok and Muammer Aksoy and the Madımak fire in Sivas are all
linked. These murders and events were organized to draw attention to
a danger of Islamism," states Yarbay.

Project staged to cause secularists to take to the streets

Noting that a project was staged in the aftermath of the Feb. 28, 1997
process to provoke secular circles, Yarbay argues that the murder
of Professor Ahmet Taner KıÅ~_lalı was the final step of this
project. Yarbay’s explanation also sheds light on anti-government
rallies held before and after the presidential elections in 2007. A
substantial number of the rallies’ organizers are currently in
custody in connection with the Ergenekon case. Yarbay stresses that
the visible increase in the number of unresolved murders during the
eras when leftist parties were in office is not a coincidence.

"There are at least 25 other organizations even bigger than
Ergenekon. Ergenekon conducted activities that the current system
cannot handle. It pushed the limits of the existing system. Were it
to remain within the limits of the system, there would not be any
problem at all. For this reason, it is being eliminated."

Noting that secret organizations should be eliminated for a more
democratic and stable regime and that further measures should
be taken to make sure that similar organizations do not emerge
again, Yarbay says: "The Ergenekon investigation is a his toric
opportunity. Preparation of the Ergenekon indictment and the
prosecution of its members is a great opportunity for Turkey’s future."

What would have happened if Ergenekon were not identified and
prosecuted? The documents and information seized in previously
identified locations and statements by Ergenekon members show that the
organization was ready to carry out a number of sensational actions
if the investigation had not been initiated. It is interesting to
note that the planned actions were similar to those committed in the
past. For instance, Ergenekon considered murdering Alevi leader Kazım
Genc with a package bomb. This method was employed in the murders of
Bahriye Ucok and Hamid Fendoglu. Tension was to be escalated between
Alevis and Sunnis by killing Alevi leader Ali Balkız with a car
bomb. This method was also employed in the assassinations of Mumcu
and KıÅ~_lalı.

Ergenekon also planned to kill Armenian community leader Minas Durmaz
Guler in front of his home. Muammer Aksoy, Hrant Dink, Turan Durdun
and Necip Hablemitoglu were all killed by the same method. The
investigation also revealed that Ergenekon considered killing the
Armenian patriarch using a shoulder-fired missile. The same type of
weapon was used in the assassination attempt against businessman Jak
Kamhi in 1993.
