Interim committee’s report called into question again

Interim committee’s report called into question again
24.09.2009 18:34 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ «Interim parliamentary committee investigating
March 1-2, 2008 incidents did really do certain work, but that cannot
be considered enough,» NDU member Artavazd Vardanyan told today a
news conference in Yerevan.

Committee’s task, in his opinion, was to disclose circumstances in
which people died, assess the legitimacy of authorities’ activities
and take relevant measures to avoid such tragedies in future.

Authorities set up the Committee in an attempt to conceal the real
causes of deaths, Vardanyan finds. «When the committee started its
work, we thought our report would lead to the resignation of certain
senior officials. But all that proved untrue, as we saw several month
ago,» he explained.

Besides, considering that inquest bodies took away all video records
committee had received from fact-finding group, «it’s unclear what
served as basis for its conclusions,» the speaker added.

To journalists’ question why he touched upon negative aspects now,
Vardanyan answered he hadn’t been familiar with the document before it
was distributed among parliament members. «I’d like to add that I
have drawn up my own report, introducing many developments in a
different manner,» Vardanyan noted.

He also said that his report thoroughly described how police
operations resulted in Zakar Hovhannisyan’s death.

Ansswering a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter’s question concerning Republican
Party’s allegations on not being entitled to investigate death causes,
he noted, «After reading the report you are under the impression
that committee attempted to justify inquest bodies and wrote the
report based on their conclusions.»

Be a Citizen Ambassador to the United Nations:
Speak to World Leaders through YouTube

As world leaders from 192 United Nations Member States converge on New
York for the 64th session of the General Assembly, the Department of
Public Information is launching a groundbreaking campaign entitled
"Citizen Ambassadors to the United Nations", which encourages people
everywhere to directly engage with decision makers by uploading video
messages on the UN YouTube channel.

The innovative "Citizen Ambassadors" campaign will take place from 23
September through 10 October 2009, coinciding with the General Debate
part of the General Assembly. It harnesses the power of online
video-sharing and offers a unique opportunity for world citizens –
youth in particular – to make their voices heard during the United
Nations General Assembly by responding to the question: "If you had
the opportunity to speak to the world leaders, what would you say?"

Videos featuring Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and high-profile
celebrities, including UN Messenger of Peace George Clooney, will be
posted on the UN YouTube channel beginning 23 September 2009. It will
ask online users to reply with their own video messages on how to
create "a better, safer, world" by 10 October 2009.

The United Nations will select the best five video entries. The
finalists will be designated "Citizen Ambassadors," and will be
invited to United Nations Headquarters on the occasion of the 64th UN
Day. There, they will take a special guided tour of UN Headquarters,
have their photo taken with Secretary-General Ban and receive VIP
seating at the UN Day Concert, to be held on Friday 23 October 2009.

The campaign is the latest in a series of initiatives by
Secretary-General Ban, which seek to utilize the power of the Internet
and online social networking to increase awareness of the work of the
UN and to engage a new generation of world citizens in the importance
of international diplomacy. These initiatives include the "We Must
Disarm" campaign, which utilizes the online social networking sites,
Twitter and Facebook, to actively disseminate information about
nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

countries and end of Armenia’s blockade. Academy will keep supporting
the policy by means of the scientific institutions’ research.

It is worth mentioning that the general meeting was closed for the

NKR Neutral To Armenian-Turkish Dialogue

NKR NEUTRAL TO ARMENIAN-TURKISH DIALOGUE

Stepanakert will not interfere in the Armenian-Turkish dialogue or in
the positions the Armenian authorities and people are taking, Georgy
Petrosyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
(NKR), stated in his interview with the Turkish NTV channel.

"Our position is quite clear: we have never interfered in Armenia’s
life despite issues of pan-Armenian importance we are concerned over
in the context of the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement," Petrosyan
said. He expressed a wish that Turkey show a similar attitude to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, without linking it with the Armenian-Turkish
dialogue.

"We would like the two issues be separated from each other. Attempts
to link them will hardly contribute to the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Turkey is obviously hostage to its
own promises to Azerbaijan – it gave the promises and has to keep
them now," Petrosyan said. According to him, Turkey is becoming an
interested party in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. "It is being
perceived as a kind of pressure, but positive results can hardly be
attained by means of pressure," Petrosyan said.

Saint Minas Church In Kashatagh Reconsecrated After Tufenkian Founda

SAINT MINAS CHURCH IN KASHATAGH RECONSECRATED AFTER TUFENKIAN FOUNDATION RENOVATION

Nagorno Karabakh

On September 17, the reconsecration of the newly renovated Saint Minas
Church in the village of Hak in the NKR district of Kashatagh took
place. Inscriptions on the church walls date the edifice to 1675 A.D.

In attendance for the historic occasion, carried out by the Tufenkian
Foundation, with the sponsorship of Virginia Davis, were NKR President
Bako Sahakyan, NKR Speaker of the Parliament Ashot Ghoulyan and other
top officials.

The church was reconsecrated by a retinue of clergy lead by Artsakh
Diocese Primate, Archbishop Bargev Martirosyan. The Primate, in his
address to Ms. Davis, said that the Turks had also tried to carry
out genocide on Artsakh soil as well but that luckily this time
their effort failed due to the organized and unified efforts of the
people. "Not only did we overcome the challenge but, as a result of
our heroic efforts, we obtained two independent Armenian states,"
stated Archbishop Martisosyan.

Virginia Davis donated the renovations funds in memory of her family
members that perished in the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

Tufenkian Foundation Country Director Maro Matosian noted that more
than 50% of the foundation’s activities are directed to the liberated
district of Kashatagh. Ms. Matosian stated that historical records
attest to the fact that Hak was once a large community and that
in 1918 the Ottoman Army succeeded in cleaning the area of native
Armenians. In 1921, the area was ceded to Soviet Azerbaijan. Today,
the community has 45 inhabitants.

Ms. Matosian singled out Hak Mayor Volodya Sahakyan as a mover and
shaker; a person that gets things done. The villagers worked long
hours assisting with the church renovation and take great pride in
the accomplishment.

Maro Matosian said that it was high time for Armenians to realize that
the nation has lost enough land already, Western Armenia, Javakhk,
Nakhijevan, and that Kashatagh and the liberated territories aren’t
for sale or barter.

"Today, we constantly hear about negotiation, documents and treaties,
but all of us here, residents, government officials, Diaspora
-Armenians, fully realize that no one from these lands will leave. No
one is ready to forsake what we liberated at a very high price,"
she stressed.

Ms. Matosian gave the example of the 1,500 Jewish settlers who moved to
the West Bank after it was captured in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. The
United Nations and other international bodies reprimanded the Jewish
settlers and still call on Israel to stop the settlements. She
rhetorically asked where all those resolutions are now that those
1,500 original settlers have reached 225,000.

"Those settlers are living on occupied Palestinian land, but no one
can tell them today that they must pack up their bags and leave," she
argued, adding that, contrary to the Jews, Armenians have liberated
and settled historic Armenian lands and have every right to stay.

Ms. Matosian continued by saying that in this context the Tufenkian
Foundation, with the backing of Virginia Davis, wants to renovate as
many churches and other Armenian monuments in the area as possible.

Ms. Davis told the assembled crowd that the Holy Mother of God Church
in the village of Mirik and Saint Stepanos Church in Hochants were
next on their list.

Village resident Varsik Abgaryan and Mrs. Varsik relocated to Kashatagh
from Sisian ten years ago. Both were present at the ceremony.

Regarding the possible return of lands to Azerbaijan, Mrs. Varsik
minced no words. "It is totally out of the question. No one would
allow even an inch of this land to be returned. It will not happen;
never. All of here, from the elderly to the kids are guardians of
this land."

Erdogan Must Persuade Not Only The Opposition, But Also His Party Me

ERDOGAN MUST PERSUADE NOT ONLY THE OPPOSITION, BUT ALSO HIS PARTY MEMBERS: TURKISH COLUMNIST

Tert

Armenia

Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet columnist Semih Idiz, in an article
published yesterday, attempted to compare Armenian and Turkish
positions in light of recent developments in Armenian-Turkish
relations.

Idiz states that ultra-nationalists in the two countries speak in the
same tongue: "we have given up on Nagorno-Karabakh" and "the document
includes only concessions for our country," Idiz says.

"This odd dichotomy — which indicates both nations carry similar
masochistic tendencies — is enough to show that hardliners in the two
countries are not concerned with the actual texts of the Protocols,"
he states.

Referring to developments in Turkey, the columnist states that
Erdogan’s government will try to persuade not only the opposition,
but also representatives of his own Justice and Development Party
that "this process with Armenia does not entail a sell-out, but is
advantageous for the two countries and the whole region."

Idiz also states that if the Protocols are not ratified by either of
the two parliaments, it will mean that ultra-nationalistic movement
representatives are "spoilers" of the negotiation process.

"Failure in this process will have dire consequences for the
two countries and the two nations, and will represent a historic
opportunity missed," Idiz concludes.
