TURKISH MPS, DUTCH MINISTER DISCUSS EU MEMBERSHIP, CYPRUS, ARMENIA

Ankara, 12 June: Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin met
members of Turkish parliament’s EU adjustment and justice committees
in Ankara on Thursday [12 June].

EU adjustment committee’s Chairman Yasar Yakis said during the meeting
that the support, which the Netherlands extended to Turkey’s EU
membership process, increased when compared to previous years.

Yakis also expressed Turkey’s views regarding Cyprus and Armenian
issues. He recalled European Council’s decision to lift pressures on
the [self-declared] Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 2004
and said that this decision bound Greek Cypriot administration,
too. Yakis said that the Netherlands should put pressure on Greek
Cypriot administration to apply the decision.

Yakis said that Turkey was against qualifying 1915 incidents as
genocide. He asked the Netherlands to make Armenia accept Turkey’s
conciliatory proposal about the issue.

Justice committee Acting Chairman Hakki Koylu also said that although
PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] and DHKP-C [Revolutionary People’s
Liberation Party – Front] were accepted as terrorist organizations in
the EU, Turkey’s judicial demands against those organizations were not
met by several EU countries and other countries.

Ballin expressed pleasure over contribution of Turkish citizens to the
Netherlands in economy and culture.

Ballin said that the Netherlands supported direct trade between the EU
and TRNC, adding that direct trade between Armenia and Turkey should
be made, too.

BAKU CALLS ON EUROPEAN UNION TO MAKE SHARP STATEMENTS TO ARMENIA

Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan
June 11 2008

Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 June / corr. TrendNews I. Alizade/ The official
Baku believes that the European Union (EU) should issue sharp statement
to Armenia about Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"It would be better for the EU to make open statements to the opposite
party in order to restore peace and stability in the region," Khazar
Ibrahim, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan said
while commenting on France chairmanship in the EU.

Slovenia will hand over the EU chairmanship to France on 1
July. The official Paris will preside over the organization for
six months. France, as one of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen,
is mediating in peace talks for the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. The other co-chairman countries include the United States
and Russia.

Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20% of Azerbaijan including the
Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding districts. The
occupation began in 1988. In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a
ceasefire agreement.

The political experts of Azerbaijan believe that the chairmanship of
France in the EU will not accelerate peace talks and settlement of
the conflict.

"At present, the EU can not be actively be involved in the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process as Russia do not provide
conditions for it," Vafa Guluzade, the political expert and the
former adviser to the president of Azerbaijan for foreign policy,
said to TrendNews on 11 June.

"Neither France, nor European Union have any opportunity to seriously
influence the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Besides,
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has not been solved yet though the
chairmen of OSCE and Council of Europe, and EU representatives on
conflict were changed more than once. Therefore, France chairmanship
in the EU and co-chairmanship in the Minsk Group will not influence
talks on the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Guluzade said.

The political expert Hikmat Hajizade stated that the United States and
Russia should reach to an agreement to solve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"EU does not have any leverage on Russia. Therefore, EU chairmanship
of France will not influence the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. The problems of Russia should be solved first of all for
the settlement of the conflict," the political expert said.

SERGEY MARKEDONOV: THE MEETING OF PRESIDENTS REGISTERED NO SERIOUS PROGRESS

armradio.am

The meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Saint
Petersburg on June 6 did not register any break or serious progress in
the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh issue, Head of the Interethnic
Relations Department at the Institute of Political and Military
Analysis, political scientist Sergey Markedonov said during the
Moscow-Yerevan-Baku space bridge.

According to him, there were two approaches on the issue. One of
them he called journalistic from the perspective of an informational
opportunity.

"The Presidents met, which means that the conflict will be solved
tomorrow or the day after tomorrow," Markedonov noted. The second
approach is that of the political scientists and experts, according
to whom the meeting registered no breakthrough, he said. According
to him, RA President Serzh Sargsyan cannot be considered a "novice"
is the Karabakh issue or in politics. "He is brilliantly familiar
with the situation," Sergey Markedonov mentioned.

According to the political scientist, a great regress has been
registered on the way of settlement during the past 1.5 years. "In
2007 there were more cases of exchange of fire and clashes at the
cease-fire zone, the number of victims was greater than in 2006. The
most serious military clash during the 14 years of armistice was
registered on March 4-5, 2008," said the political scientist, adding
that most of the bellicose rhetoric comes from Azerbaijan, which
views itself as the defeated party. "The main result is that the
meeting took place. It’s better to meet and speak, that is the most
positive result, but speaking about any progress is out of question,
since the parties derive from different assessments of the situation
and philosophy of the conflict," Markedonov noted.

"I do not see 2-3 points, where the parties will be ready for
concessions. Simply, the philosophy and view of the conflict is
different," the political scientist said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Chairman of the Azeri Party of Democratic Reform,
Milli Mejlis member Asim Mollazade is pessimistic about progress in
the Nagorno Karabakh settlement talks.

"The position of the current Armenian authorities is an imitation of
a negotiation process. Azerbaijan works for a peaceful resolution of
the conflict and is willing to continue talks but we fear that Armenia
is not. I should also mention that Russia makes attempts to transfer
the settlement process to the CIS," he said during Yerevan-Moscow-Baku
television space bridge.

"The conflict should be resolved in the framework of Azerbaijan’s
"territorial integrity," he added.

"We would not like to use Azerbaijan’s economic growth as a tool in
armament race. We want the South Caucasus to become the region of
cooperation," the Azeri MP said. "There is a real chance to achieve
peace between Yerevan and Baku."

Turkey Is A Strategical Ally Of Azerbaijan, Aliyev
Published: 6/5/2008

NAKHICHEVAN – Azerbaijan’s President said on Wednesday that Turkey and
his country had similar stances towards all issues. Turkish Premier
Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan held a
joint press conference following their tete-a-tete meeting in
Nakhichevan.

Pointing to the historical and social importance of his meeting with
Erdogan, Aliyev said, "Azerbaijan and Turkey’s opinions on all issues
completely tally with each other".

"Turkey played an important role for Nakhichevan, especially during
the crisis in 1990’s when the region was under siege (of Armenia),"
Aliyev also said.

He said that economic and political issues, as well as joint projects
were discussed during his talks with Erdogan.

Aliyev said they exchanged views regarding the status of oil and
natural gas pipelines and the Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway project during
the meeting.

"Turkey is a strategical ally for Azerbaijan," Aliyev said, adding
that his country was quite pleased with Turkey’s efforts aiming at the
lifting of the embargo over Nakhichevan.

Rock star Serj Tankian talks music, politics

By Nick Meyer – The Arab American News
Friday, 06.06.2008, 03:02pm

As an Armenian-American who was born in Beirut, Serj Tankian never
seems to run out of things to sing and write about. Tankian, the lead
singer, rhythm guitarist, and keyboardist of the multi-platinum
American rock band System of a Down, is currently touring as a solo
artist in support of his album "Elect the Dead," which peaked at #4 on
the Billboard music charts in November 2007.

Tankian is also a co-founder of the Axis of Justice organization,
whose purpose is to bring together musicians, fans of music and
grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice
together.

System of a Down and Tankian are known for their aggressive and
heavy-yet-melodic rock sound, anti-war stances, and lyrics that range
from socially conscious and poetic to dark and bizarre.

Tankian recently sat down for an e-mail interview with The Arab
American News:

Q: How long did you live in Lebanon and have you visited since you
moved away?

A: I was seven years old when we moved to the U.S. at the beginning
of the civil war in Lebanon. I have vivid memories of Beirut and the
beauty and multi-cultural diversity it represented. I have not been
back. I had tickets for my parents to go back in 2006 and had to
cancel them due to the Israeli bombing and invasion.

Q: Do you see many Arabic fans of your music or do you know how the
music has been received by the Arab community?

A: Yes. I’ve had nice long chats with lots of Arab fans from our
shows. I’m not sure how we’ve been received by the Arab
community. Well, I think. It’s hard for anyone to speak for or of a
community, you know.

Q: You play a lot of concerts overseas, have you played in any Middle
Eastern countries or do you have plans to?

A: I would love to play Beirut and the Middle East in general,
yes. We’re trying to set up our first concert in Armenia right now and
it’s a lot of work logistically, because it’s not set up for the type
of concerts that we are accustomed to putting on.

Q: Have you and System of a Down always made political music or did
you start out as more of just a regular rock band?

A: We’ve always made music that speaks honesty from our hearts. Some
of that music is political, some humorous, some romantic, some art for
the sake of art, etc.

Q: You said your next solo album is going to rely less on guitar, but
you still want it to convey the same emotion. How do you plan to
undertake this challenge and what instruments do you plan to use most?

A: A full 67-person orchestra and a jazz quintet. It will sound and
feel more powerful than any rock band anywhere.

Q: You’re known for having one or more so-called "crazy" or
"off-the-wall" songs or song titles on each of your albums. Do you
think that the rest of your more serious or socially conscious songs
are underrated by critics because of these songs? If so does that
bother you at all?

A: Not at all. In fact, people take my music and myself way too
seriously to be honest. Sometimes I sit down with journalists and
they’re nervous in interviewing me, and I laugh because I go out of my
way to make people comfortable.

Q: Will System of a Down get back together after your solo projects
have run their course?

A: I don’t blame you for asking and I’m honored for the interest but
the story has not changed: it’s an indefinite hiatus. If we decide to
do something, the world will know, believe me.

Q: What advice do you have for the Arab world as they continue to
struggle with the issues of our time and a possible war with Iran?

A: Well, I have lots of advice politically. The thing is there is no
such thing as the Arab world first and foremost. Arabs are united in
the U.S. and Europe, but the goals and geo-politics of Arab nations in
the Middle East are anything but united or on the same plane. This is
why other powers take advantage of that rift and are able to keep the
rift going. The West has created and helped keep Arab kingdoms
(post-WWI) in place for its own geo-political interests.

Together those kingdoms and the West have helped put down Arab secular
nationalist movements from the 50s on. This has created the need for
the populace to search elsewhere for democracy and equality (Islam) in
setting up an egalitarian society. The aggression against Iran by the
U.S. should not be encouraged by Saudi Arabia and other Arab
nations. The real war in this world is not political or
religious. It’s a globalist-based class war integrating nations,
cultures and religions. This is not to say there are not other reasons
that people fight, of course.

Q: Do you feel that the world is on a one-way track to destruction
with all the issues facing it like war, global warming, etc.?

A: It depends on what you mean by the world. Civilization is
currently scientifically unsustainable based on the accelerated rate
of destruction of natural resources coupled with the accelerated rate
of population rise. We need to search for a new "life."

Q: If you had to pick one song of yours that you were most proud of as
far as the impact of the lyrics, what would it be and why?

A: I don’t pick favorites. I don’t have a favorite ice cream or color
either.

BAKU WARNS YEREVAN THAT OCCUPATION OF AZERI LAND COULD LEAD TO USE IF FORCE

Interfax News Service
June 4 2008
Russia

The perpetuation of the occupation of Azeri territories by Armenia
could make the use of force in resolving the conflict over Nagorno-
Karabakh inevitable, Azeri Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroglu
said on Wednesday.

"Armenia should liberate the occupied territories, for otherwise the
use of military force would be inevitable," Sabiroglu said at a press
conference on Wednesday.

The Azeri armed forces are prepared to liberate the occupied land,
he said.

"If the occupation of Azeri territories by Armenia continues, this
could lead to undesirable developments in the region," Sabiroglu said.

The Azeri government is making all necessary steps to make the national
armed forces more powerful, he said.

Georgia Started Appropriation Of Armenian Churches In Turkey?

GEORGIA STARTED APPROPRIATION OF ARMENIAN CHURCHES IN TURKEY?

PanARMENIAN.Net

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Georgian government is set to fund efforts to
restore a historical monastery in the Turkish village of Camlyamac,
in the eastern province of Erzurum, a local official said, Today’s
Zaman reports.

The Osvank Monastery was constructed between the years 963 and 973
and was dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

The monastery included a church, a refectory and a scriptorium. It
was one of the most important bishoprics in the region and a center
of culture especially famous for its manuscripts. The church is by
far the largest cruciform-shaped church in the region.

It retained its importance until the end of the 15th century.

"In 1985 the Turkish Ministry of Culture designated it as a monument
to be protected and preserved and included it on the national heritage
list. It remains an important destination among Georgian tourists
visiting Turkey," the newspaper says.

"There were no Georgian churches in Western Armenia, specifically
at the time mentioned," director of the Armenian Genocide Institute
Museum Hayk Demoyan commented to a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

"The monastery belonged to Chalcedonic Armenians. The cross on the
temple was a bit different from a Gregorian. Later it was replaced
by an Orthodox one.

There is an inscription in Asomtavruli (ancient Georgian) above one
of the ornaments in the Church.

That is why Georgia thinks it’s a Georgian temple," Demoyan said.

Erzurum is one of Islamic centers of the Republic of Turkey, where
nothing reminds about the nation which once inhabited this land. Some
10 Armenians temples, including Surb Astvatsatsin and Kyzylvank have
been preserved so far.
