ANGELA MERKEL CALL FOR A SUMMIT OF GEORGIA’S NEIGHBORS

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a summit of Georgia’s
neighbors following the country’s recent conflict with Russia,
independent French correspondent Jean Eckian informed referring to
the Deutsche Welle.

Russia itself was not on the list of countries envisaged by Merkel –
which included Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan – but no country
should be excluded from participation, the spokesman said.

"It’s up to the French presidency of the EU to decide if this
conference will take place, as well as when and who will be invited,"
spokesman Thomas Steg said.

Berlin reckons the theme of the summit should be "reconstruction
and stability in Georgia and the region," the German government
spokesman said.

Istanbul, 20 August: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan left
Istanbul for Azerbaijan on Wednesday [20 August].

Erdogan will assess the recent developments in the region with
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Holding a press conference at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport prior to his
departure, Erdogan said that he would discuss Caucasus stability and
cooperation platform, which was a project he proposed to find solution
to the problems in the region.

The recent situation in Georgia showed the necessity to restore peace,
stability and security in Caucasus, Erdogan said.

"Turkey also has a vital interest in this issue. I believe that
implementation of a mechanism which contributes to the common interests
of the region is important," he said.

Regarding his visits to Moscow and Tbilisi, Erdogan said that he
conveyed his views to officials that Caucasus stability and cooperation
platform was a project that could fully settle sustainable peace,
security and stability. Erdogan said that both Russian and Georgian
officials told him that they could take part in such a platform.

Upon a question, Erdogan said that they would also hold meetings
with Armenian officials regarding Caucasus stability and cooperation
platform. He added that Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan would
also meet with the Russian foreign minister this week regarding the
issue. Erdogan said that after Babacan’s meeting, the details of the
visit to Armenia would be shaped up.

Regarding energy issue, Erdogan said that initiatives were launched for
transfer of natural gas to Turkey from south to eliminate difficulties
which sometimes emerged between Turkey and Iran in winter.

When asked about news reports claiming that two US vessels, which
wanted to go to Georgia, were not permitted to pass from the
Straits, Erdogan said that no request had been made to Turkey so
far regarding the issue. He added that if such a request was made,
relevant institutions and the government discussed it in a detailed
way, and then made a decision.

Foreign Minister Babacan is accompanying Erdogan.

BIBLE READING SESSIONS ARE HELD IN BIKFAYA

The Feast of Saint Mary was uniquely celebrated by the Catholicosate of
Cilicia this year. In addition to the traditional blessing of the grapes
service, the Catholicosate’s Christian Education department organized Bible
reading sessions in the Saint Asdvadzadzine Chapel in Bikfaya under the
auspices of His Holiness Aram I.

Under the title "The Theotokos and the Holy Bible", the Cilician Brotherhood
members presented the following topics to believers over a period of five
days:

"Mary visits Elizabeth"- Father Sdepanos Pashayian (Monday, August 11th)
"The birth of Christ"- Father Mesrob Sarkissian (Tuesday, August 12th)
"The wedding of Gana"- Father Sahag Yemishian (Wednesday, August 13th)
"The Crusification of Christ"- Father Ghevont Pentezian (Thursday, August
14th)
"The use of the Eastern door"- Father Torkom Donoyian (Friday, August 15th)

The Bible readings inspired some 150 Christian Armenian women from the
different parts of Lebanon to follow the path of St. Mary in three respects
in particular: to obey God through the Church; to have a spirit of
dedication to their environment; to have the courage to preach about God
through their lifestyle.

In addition to the Bible readings, the faithful recited prayers and hymns in
praise of the Virgin Mary, as an eternal mediator between God and people.

"In current conditions the issue of holding a dialogue between
Azerbaijani powers and opposition", said Mirmahmood Miralioghlu.

He said the cooperation between the two powers is always necessary
for the resolution of national problems.

"If the powers want to arrange a dialogue, they can initiate it
anytime. Moreover, along with the Karabakh problem, there can also
be a sociopolitical situation in the country and problems between
opposition and powers.

The political situation in the country has changed so much that the
unknowns can even explode two grenades in the Abu Bekir mosque.

Powers and opposition should find common grounds", said Miralioghlu.

Divided They Stand: Nato Searches For A Strategy To Confront Russia

DIVIDED THEY STAND: NATO SEARCHES FOR A STRATEGY TO CONFRONT RUSSIA

The Times
August 19, 2008
UK

Tony Halpin in Gori and Charles Bremner in Paris

The Russian Army continued to occupy Georgia in defiance of the West
yesterday as Nato leaders gathered to hammer out a united response
to the new military threat from Moscow.

There was no sign of a withdrawal from Georgian soil despite a
declaration from Moscow that a pullout had begun. The Georgian
Government in Tbilisi countered that Russian forces were still trying
to take more territory.

Nato foreign ministers will meet in Brussels today to try to overcome
deep-seated divisions on the best way to confront the first Russian
invasion of a neighbour since the end of the Cold War. The United
States, Britain and many Eastern European states are pressing for a
tough stance but France, Germany and others are reluctant to alienate
Moscow.

Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian President, told forces veterans in the
city of Kursk, the scene of one of the decisive battles of the Second
World War, that Russia would deliver a "crushing response" to any
attack on its citizens. A Nato spokeswoman said that its 26 foreign
ministers would "reiterate full support for the territorial integrity
of Georgia" and its eventual membership of the alliance. A package
of support measures could include aid to rebuild Georgia’s military
infrastructure, which Tbilisi says has been wrecked by Russian forces.

Dmitri Rogozin, Russia’s Ambassador to Nato, warned the alliance that
its relationship with Moscow would suffer if the foreign ministers
expressed support for Georgia. Bernard Kouchner, the French Foreign
Minister, also disclosed that Russia was "not inclined to accept"
a team of 100 European observers to monitor the ceasefire in Georgia.

The Times witnessed Russian forces continuing to man checkpoints
and defensive positions 40km (25 miles) from Georgia’s capital,
Tbilisi, yesterday. Troops controlled the road to the city of Gori,
which remained under Russian control.

Hundreds of Georgian soldiers sat in pick-up trucks about five miles
from the first Russian checkpoint, waiting to reclaim control of
Gori. After some hours, however, they retreated towards Tbilisi when
it became clear that the Russians were not leaving.

Russian troops blocked access to Gori, although humanitarian aid
was allowed in, and a series of explosions could be heard in the
city. Several blasts were also heard in the town of Senaki, where
Russian troops also barred reporters from entering.

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said that there was "not even a sign"
of a Russian withdrawal, adding that police had deterred a Russian
advance into the town of Sachkere and the spa resort of Borjomi in
central Georgia.

The deputy head of the general staff in Moscow announced the start of a
pullout from Georgia but gave no indication of when Russia would comply
with US and European demands for a complete withdrawal. Colonel-General
Anatoly Nogovitsyn said: "I can only say that we will not be leaving
as fast as we came."

The White House repeated its demand for a withdrawal "without
delay". US Defence Department officials said that Russia had moved
SS-21 missile launchers into South Ossetia that are capable of
hitting Tbilisi.

EU leaders have been hardening their attitude as patience over Kremlin
intransigence runs out. President Sarkozy of France, the EU’s current
chairman, said he would call an emergency summit "to decide what
consequences to draw" if Russian forces were not pulled out.

President Sarkozy, who brokered the ceasefire deal with Russia last
week, warned President Medvedev on Sunday that there would be "serious
consequences" for relations with the EU if Russia did not comply with
the accord.

Germany is working on a proposal for a reconstruction conference for
Georgia involving the EU and Georgia’s neighbours in the Caucasus,
Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Before flying to the Nato meeting, Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary
of State, said that Russia’s reputation lay in tatters. She said:
"We are going to help rebuild Georgia into a strong Georgian state. The
Russians will have failed in their effort to undermine Georgia."

A President Saakashvili’s future seemed less certain in Georgia as
criticism emerged of his decision to send troops into South Ossetia
on August 7.

Opposition leaders said that he would face hard questions once Russian
tanks had left Georgia.

Nino Burjanadze, a former ally in the 2003 Rose Revolution that swept
Mr Saakashvili to power, is emerging as a potential challenger. She
told Reuters: "Georgian mothers are very brave and they are ready to
send their children, their sons, to fight to defend their country. But
Georgian mothers, as all mothers in the world, have a right to know
why they are doing this."

Swedish wrestler stripped of medal

BEIJING — A Swedish wrestler was disqualified and stripped of his
bronze medal yesterday for dropping his medal in protest after a
disputed loss at the Beijing Olympics.

Ara Abrahamian was punished by the International Olympic Committee for
violating the spirit of fair play during the medal ceremony, becoming
the fourth athlete kicked out of the Games and bringing the number of
medals removed so far to three.

The 28-year-old Abrahamian became incensed when a disputed penalty
call decided his semifinal match against Italian Andrea Minguzzi, who
went on to win the gold medal in the Greco-Roman 84-kilogram division
on Thursday.

During the medal ceremony, the Armenian-born Abrahamian took the
bronze from around his neck and angrily dropped it on the mat as he
walked away. He did not take part in the rest of the medal ceremony.

COURTING ETIQUETTE

BEIJING — Chinese state media appealed to fans to stop cheering
inappropriately at tennis matches, urging them to present a good image
to the world.

Enthusiastic Chinese fans have often clapped at wrong moments during
Olympics tennis matches, including during rallies, breaking with the
usual etiquette with which tennis is watched.

Some players have said it was affecting their concentration.

RACES BLOWN AWAY

QINGDAO, China — A showdown between British star Ben Ainslie and
American Zach Railey in the first ever medal race in Olympic sailing
was postponed by a day after winds failed the racers in the Finn
class.

Yesterday’s fickle winds also prevented a British-Dutch battle for
gold in the women’s Yngling class.

That means three medal races are scheduled for today, including the
49er skiffs, where Denmark had the lead after 12 races over Italy and
Spain.

ANKARA: German Efforts for Georgia

Journal of Turkish Weekly, Turkey

German Efforts for Georgia

Cenk Alican
Saturday , 16 August 2008

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her deep concerns regarding
the conflict in the separatist pro-Russian enclaves of Abkhazia and
South Ossetia in the run-up to her meeting with Russian President
Dmitry Medvedev in the Black Sea City of Sotchi ` a place just 35
kilometres far to the Georgian border and the expected venue of the
2014 Winter Olympic Games. It will be Medvedev`s 100th day in office
when Merkel arrives on Friday.

Some topics on the meeting agenda changed at a short term and most of
them will focus on the heavy fighting between Russian and Georgian
forces since late last week and will try to find satisfying
solutions. Chancellery Spokesman Thomas Steg said that Merkel called
for an end of the violence, the proper and unconditional withdrawal of
all forces from the crisis area and the search for a political
solution during a phone conversation with Georgian President Mikhail
Saakashvili on Monday.

Actually Merkel`s visit to Russia and her meeting with Medvedev were
planned to shape the frame of a relaxed and trustful friendship that
would deepen mutual relations and give Merkel the opportunity to
sightsee the Olympic sites. The chilled and smooth atmosphere between
both sides` predecessors Putin and Schröder was expected to
create an exemplary and fruitful basis for this meeting. But now, with
a crisis next door, international criticism on Russia’s
disproportionate military response and the fear of oil and gas
shortages through Georgian pipelines, Merkel will need to line up
intensive diplomacy in Sotchi. She already emphasized her respect for
Georgia’s territorial integrity.

Also, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier made diplomatic
efforts this weekend. He had presented some solution proposals to the
Georgian Government and to the internationally not recognized
authority of the Abkhaz Region during his two-day journey to Georgia
in July. Steinmeier held talks regarding a 3-step-plan with Medvedev
and his Russian counterpart Sergej Lawrow at that time. Germany is
coordinator of a Friendship Group under the umbrella of the UN
Secretary and it participates the United Nations Observer Mission in
Georgia (UNOMIG) with military observers and sanitary troops. UNOMIG
has been monitoring the ceasefire between the conflict parties since
2003. Steinmeier`s efforts yielded fruits and he was able to establish
two direct contacts between Georgian Foreign Minister Eka
Tkeshelashvili and Lawrow at the weekend. Besides, the German Foreign
Ministry provided an immediate 1-Million-Euro humanitarian aid package
and enabled its supply to the civil population through two
humanitarian corridors. In the meanwhile, the German Embassy in
Tbilisi organized busses to transport its citizens out of the
country. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jens Ploetner made clear that this
action is not part of an evacuation plan, but helps Germans to leave
Georgia and to head for the Armenian capital of Yerevan voluntarily.

U.S.-backed Georgia called for ceasefire and signed unilaterally a
four-step peace plan initiated by French Foreign Minister and head of
the rotating EU Council Presidency Bernard Kouchner. Together with his
Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb he runs talks in Tbilisi and
Moscow. German Minister of State Gernot Erler appealed for Russia to
co-operate with international mediators and MP Eckart von Klaeden
criticized Russia’s attitude as provocative. EU Foreign Ministers will
hold a special conference after the return of Kouchner from the crisis
area.

Young, charismatic and ambitious Saakashvili desires to join NATO, but
he seems to have failed his election campaign promise to re-establish
Georgia’s territorial integrity. He also miscalculated Russia’s
military and strategic power that stands head and shoulders above the
Georgian capabilities. The western governments ` including Germany `
did not recognize the seriousness of the situation in time. The crisis
turns to become an internal conflict of the European Union how to deal
with Eastern neighbours, especially with Russia. Germany’s `gas
diplomacy’ through the direct pipeline connection with Russia `
initiated by former Chancellor Schröder- and the Baku-Ceyhan-Pipeline
that runs partly through Georgia and feeds the European consumers has
an outstanding significance, despite harsh words and warnings by
Merkel. She should be well aware of the situation.

Georgia Is A ‘Walk In The Park’ For HSBC – Compared With Iraq

GEORGIA IS A ‘WALK IN THE PARK’ FOR HSBC – COMPARED WITH IRAQ
Patrick Hosking

The Times
August 16, 2008
UK

Timing is everything. Eight weeks ago HSBC opened the doors of
a swanky new operation in downtown Tbilisi. Georgia’s promising
economic prospects, its political stability and its pro-Western
attitudes had persuaded Britain’s biggest bank to extend its empire
a little further into the Caucasus.

"We believe that Georgia offers some of the best growth opportunities
in the entire CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] region," Tony
Turner, a veteran HSBC man and chief executive of the new venture,
told local reporters and TV crews at the time. The bank’s decision to
sink $17 million (£9.1 million) of start-up capital into the venture,
alongside minority Armenian investors, and hire an initial staff of
56 people was soon going to pay dividends, be believed.

Seven weeks later, last weekend, Mr Turner was listening to Russian
bombs raining down on military installations on the edge of the city
and wondering whether it was safe for his wife and three teenage
children to remain with him.

As the bangs intensified, his 17-year old son, visiting for the
holidays and studying for his physics A-level, remarked that it was
statistically improbable that a bomb would fall directly on them.

Related Links Current accounts shrink by 5% , says HSBC HSBC charges
up to £9,999 for ‘rescue’ deals Not surprisingly, the observation
failed to reassure anybody: by Monday morning, with the Russian
invasion gathering intensity, the family was evacuated.

HSBC opened its doors as usual for most of the week, although there was
an enforced bank holiday on Tuesday, the better to enable Georgians
to rally in a show of support for President Saakashvili. Three of Mr
Turner’s local staff were called up as reservists.

"It has been slightly surreal," Mr Turner told The Times, "and
occasionally scary. In other parts of Georgia it’s been just horrible,
but there have been no heroics from bank managers in Tbilisi."

On Tuesday, at the height of the alarm, Mr Turner called head office
and spoke to Dyfrig John, HSBC’s chief for Europe. The decision was
made to stay, but to be ready to temporarily shut down if conditions
became worse.

So far, that has not been necessary.

Nor has HSBC been particularly targeted as a symbol of the West,
which many Georgians believe betrayed them by not responding more
immediately and more emphatically to Russian aggression. There has been
"some disappointment", Mr Turner concedes.

HSBC, which operates in 85 countries, is no stranger to instability
and violence. Three of its staff were killed and 47 injured when
al-Qaeda sympathisers bombed its Istanbul headquarters in 2003. Its
Arg entina chief was machine-gunned in the leg while foiling a kidnap
attempt in 2000.

HSBC has an office in the Baghdad green zone. "The last few days in
Tbilisi have been a bit of a walk in the park compared with that,"
says Mr Turner, 48, who has been with HSBC for 25 years, and served
in Brazil, Brunei, Bahrain and Armenia.

As for Georgia’s prospects now, Mr Turner says that it is much too
early to say. Economic growth had been galloping along at 10 per cent
or more a year for five years. Foreign investment inflows had tripled
to $1.56 billion in the space of three years.

But all bets are off as a result of the invasion. At best, new
foreign investment in the country is likely to be shelved until
stability returns.

Hotel developments on the Black Sea are certain to be delayed, he says.

But Mr Turner is not unduly concerned. HSBC invests for the long term
and is in the business of risk-taking. While business may be thinner
than previously forecast, the margins in the Caucasus are five or
ten times as big as in the West.

HSBC rarely quits a country, though it was forced out of Shanghai by
the communists in 1949. Short of a dramatic revival in hostilities,
HSBC is in Georgia for good. Mr Turner adds: "It is very rare for
the group to turn its back on a place for any reason at all."

The best-laid plans . . .

What HSBC said at the launch in June . . .

"Georgia is one of the most dynamic economies in the former Soviet
Union"

"With GDP growth last year in excess of 10 per cent, we believe that
Georgia offers some of the best growth opportunities in the entire
CIS region"

"There is a new breed of Georgian who are increasingly global in
outlook and expect nothing less from their bank" "Plans for a second
branch are already well under way" . . . and this week

"It has been slightly surreal and occasionally scary. In other parts
of Georgia it’s been just horrible but there have been no heroics
from bank managers in Tbilisi" – Tony Turner, pictured left

ARMENIAN BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY CELEBRATES 8 YEARS OF ITS ACTIVITY

Noyan Tapan

Au g 15, 2008

LOS ANGELES, AUGUST 15, ARMENIANS TODAY – NOYAN TAPAN. In August
Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry celebrated 8 years of successand
and during Match For Life gala shared with 300 presents the process
of the future developments of creating a Stem Cells Harvesting Center
in Armenia.

At the gala event, presided by Master of Ceremony Mark Geragos, Chair
of the ABMDR board of directors, several key supporters were recognized
for their contributions: Naz Atikian, as Woman of the Year, George
Najarian, Man of the Year, Karineh Khudikian and Armond Aghakhanian,
Volunteers of the Year, and Horizon TV, business of the year.

Over ,000 was raised at the event, the proceeds to go toward ongoing
DNA tissue typing in order to find Matches for Life for needy patients
as quickly as possible.

Following a Champaign reception which included a chance to win a
half-karat diamond donated by Design by Naz, the program and honoree
awards commenced over dinner.

The night’s program included a video showing a young Armenian girl,
Meline, celebrating her 18th birthday thanks to a stem cell transplant
facilitated by the ABMDR and relaying the exciting news that the
organization’s new Stem Cell Harvesting Center in Armenia is nearing
completion. When officially open this coming fall, it will provide
a safe and cost effective means of harvesting stem cells to be used
in bone marrow stem cell transplantations.

The Center will bring state-of-the-art medical and research technology
to Armenia, transforming Yerevan into a regional center for stem cell
harvesting and blood component separation, bringing not only revenues
from other countries in the region, but positioning the Center as a
vital and active player among international transplantation centers
worldwide.

In order to treat Armenians suffering from uncurable blood-related
diseases (leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia), bone marrow transplants
require compatible tissue types that match the genetic makeup
of the patient, which is most likely to come from other Armenian
donors. Currently the ABMDR has identified 1,276 patients in need,
and from its registry of 14,000 donors has found over 900 potential
matches and facilitated 8 transplantations around the globe.
