YEREVAN ARCHITECTURE DISCUSSED

Yerevan chief architect Samvel Danielyan expressed his emotions today
in regard to construction in Yerevan.

“This is a very interesting time period which is full of clashes of
mentality. In future we may not face such a massive construction,”
he said.

On behalf of Mkrtich MINASYAN, Chairman of Architects’ Union and Gurgen
MUSHEGHYAN, Yerevan Design Institute Head, Samvel Danielyan stated that
they are not satisfied with the architectural outlook of the buildings.

Minasyan admitted that one of their failures is that they sanctioned
construction at public places. “This is a negative thing for our city
which lacks green areas,” he said. “If we were more experienced at
that time we would allocate land for green areas and today instead
of numerous cafes we would have green zones.

However, would the public understand us at that time,” he adds.

The Head of Architects’ Union referred to Zangu gorge as an example of
a green zone which is not looked after property. According to him, it
could be a very nice place for Yerevan residents to spend their time.

“Those who come to the gorge may notice that nothing is left from
the river Zangu here. We have a very nice gift from nature which we
destroy with our own hands,” he said.

The Head of Architects’ Union expressed his dissatisfaction with
the fact that nothing is left from one time Tamanyan architectural
Yerevan. Gurgen Musheghyan also joined him in his discontent.

Pensioners Do Not Want To Be “Enumerated”

PENSIONERS DO NOT WANT TO BE “ENUMERATED”

A1+
[03:28 pm] 10 May, 2006

Today a group of pensioners was gathered opposite the Government
building. They have not received their old-age pension for a year
because of not having a social card.

The system of social cards was introduced on June 1, 2004. More than
70 people have already applied to court. They have refused to get a
social card and demand to make the cards compulsory.

The people who are against social cards see a religious and spiritual
pretext in this phenomenon and do not want “to be enumerated and to
sell their soul to the devil”. “They sold the whole country and now
they want to sell our souls”, Amalya says. She left his office as
doctor where she had been working for 48 years because she did not
want to get a social card.

Hranoush Kharatyan, head of the RA Administration of National
Minorities met the participants of the meeting. She promised to find
a solution to the problem within the framework of the law.

Edmond Kassapian, the president of Genevieve Lethu

Edmond Kassapian
by Shirley Lau

South China Morning Post
May 5, 2006 Friday

La Rochelle-based Edmond Kassapian is the president of Genevieve
Lethu, a 15-year-old French tableware and cutlery brand that opened
its first store in Hong Kong in December. An Armenian born in France,
Kassapian has a penchant for Chinese tableware, although, he says,
when it comes to fine quality you can’t beat France.

“I like the beautiful colours and designs of Chinese tableware,
especially those with lovely flowers. The details are very precise.

In terms of quality, however, French products are relatively finer and
more sophisticated. But, of course, Chinese antiques are excellent.”

Should top tableware be used for dining or for display only?

“In France, every family used to keep a very expensive set of tableware
at home. You put it on display and only used it once or twice in a
lifetime – perhaps when your grandfather came to visit or at your
wedding. It was so expensive you worried about breaking it.

This was silly, but it was the French way. Now things are changing.

People would rather spend the money on a plasma TV or a trip abroad.

They still want beautiful tableware, but it has to be inexpensive.

That’s why the prices of many tableware brands have gone down.”

How does the look of tableware play a part in a dining experience?

“Aesthetics are integral to dining and wining. When you have friends
over for dinner, you want to make sure you have a good time. You serve
them with good food on beautiful plates. It’s not just the meal that
matters, but also the decoration of everything on the table.”

So nice plates make the food taste nicer?

“You can put fois gras on the floor and eat it. Or you can put it
on a nice plate. It should taste the same. But the sentiment will be
very different.”
