"This victory is a great event for Armenian football. The victory is
a notable day in the history of Armenian football, and this match
was a beautiful performance," chief coach of the Armenian national
football team Yan Porterfield said in a press conference following
the Armenia-Poland match. He thanked the goalkeeper of the Armenian
team Gevorg Kasparov for a brilliant game and Hamlet Mkhitaryan for
the only victorious goal. In his words, the team played successfully,
since today the Armenian team has a choice today, new players have
"grown up," which will enhance the competition in the team.

The Armenian team will seriously prepare for the next matches
especially that with the team of Portugal. According to the trainer
it is necessary to play well with all the rivals and in the last game
Armenian footballers proved that they are able to do that.

After the first half of the Yan Porterfield discussed the game with
the players, as a result of which eh Armenian team showed a wiser
and a more active game in the second period. Hamlet Mkitaryan’s goal
brought victory to the Armenian national team.

If before the last two games Armenia was at the bottom of the list
in Group A, then now it has advanced to the 5th position and can even
compete with Belgium for a higher standing.

ARKADY GHUKASSYAN: IT IS FOR THE NAGORNO-KARABAKH PEOPLE TO SAY THE LAST WORD

The present format of the Karabakh peace process is destructive and
illogical, Nagorno-Karabakh President Arkady Ghukassyan said at a
press-conference in Yerevan, Tuesday.

"The matter concerns the fate of the Nagorno-Karabakh people and
their non-participation in the talks is not clear," the NKR President
emphasized.

At the same time, he pointed out the lack of the negotiation process
determined at the summit in Budapest in 1994 (which stipulated three
parties to the conflict). "There is no Minsk process now. There
are only separate meetings of the Armenian and Azeri presidents and
foreign ministers.

Nagorno-Karabakh is not represented in this format. It is
illogical. But in any case, it will be for the NKR people to say
the last word as the matter concerns the their fate," A.Ghukassyan
said. He also commented upon the forthcoming meeting of the Armenian
and Azeri presidents in St.Petersburg on June 9. According to his
estimation, this meeting will not be fateful. "It will be a common
meeting," he noted. The NKR President expressed confidence that the
present format of negotiations gives no real opportunity to find the
solution of the problem.

Cooperation Organization’s (BSECO) jubilee summit in Istanbul, RA

as the host country," Karapetyan said.

Azerbaijan Not Ready To Abandon Maximalist Stance On Karabakh

AZERBAIJAN NOT READY TO ABANDON MAXIMALIST STANCE ON KARABAKH

PanARMENIAN.Net
04.06.2007 18:07 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ NKR parliament speaker Ashot Ghulyan made remarks
on the forthcoming meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents
in Saint Petersburg.

"Judging from the optimism of the mediators, progress in coordination
of the fundamental principles of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict
settlement is possible. Of course, we should hope, but statements by
the Azeri officials prove that they are not ready to abandon maximalist
stance, what conflicts with the logic of the negotiation process. Thus,
we can only guess about a chance to reach an agreement," he said.

When commenting on the hearsay on surrender of Karabakh-controlled
regions in exchange for a deferred referendum Ghulyan said, "If
something is being discussed it means that somebody wants it."

"It’s surprising that during such kind of discussions no one cites
the newly adopted NKR Organic Law, which reads "Before restoration of
territorial integrity of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic and definition
of borders, public authority is exercised on the territory under
jurisdiction of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic" (article 142). In
other words, artificial competitions are inappropriate. The NKR
Constitution has the supreme juridical power and its norms operate
immediately (article 7.1). In conclusion I would like to mention
that the status of these territories has been fixed in our Organic
Law. The international law states Constitution as the supreme will
of any nation," he underscored.

"There are many ways to activate the process but they all need thorough
discussion. In absence of basis for such consideration all talks
become hypothetical. I think statements on adherence to ceasefire
and resolution of all complex issues peacefully could become a good
ground. Certainly, it’s not a novelty but it will demonstrate sincerity
of the sides. The mediators feel necessity in establishing trust in
the region. This aspect demands a stepwise approach. The remaining
issues can be settled in the atmosphere of trust and good will. And
last but not least, negotiations should proceed in the fixed format
in accordance with the commitments the parties have undertaken,"
he resumed, IA Regnum reports.

Sovereignty and justice in Kosovo

Sovereignty and justice in Kosovo

Daniel Hummel, Jakarta

The Indonesian government needs to seriously consider the message it
is sending to its citizens when it supports sanctions against a
sovereign Iran, while hesitating to support Martti Ahtisaari’s
recommendations on the independence of Kosovo based on sovereignty
concerns.

The government needs to analyze the issue and be clear about the
roots and history in order to work toward a future within the purview
of its own moralities.

Fear that the UN decision has set a precedent for other small nations
to seek independence is unfounded. Often, the drive for independence
comes from injustices.

Serbia’s claim of sovereignty over Kosovo is weak.

Kosovo was once the homeland of ethnic Albanians, who have faced
numerous Slavic invasions throughout their history. The Ottoman
Empire under Murad I fought Serbia’s Prince Lazar on the fields of
Kosovo in the 14th century, in which Serbia lost and became a vassal
state of the empire.

After the loss of Ottoman power and breakdown of centralized control,
Serbia became dominated by exploitative governors. One notable moment
in its history involved the Janissaries — an elite core of Turkish
infantry — at the end of the 18th century who murdered the Ottoman
governor and assumed control of Serbia.

They oppressed the Serbs and massacred its population, often in
conjunction with fanatical Muslim elements. They were eventually
suppressed by the Serbs themselves.

The sultan was weak and afforded little help, and this precedent
generated hatred toward Ottoman authority. This, along with Russian
support, gave them the will to rise up against Ottoman rule.

Later in history, when the southern Slavs formed Yugoslavia, it
developed into a kingdom and then later a socialist republic, which
collapsed in 1989. After this, various former provinces fought for
independence, as the Slavic-run state failed to represent any of them
traditionally or religiously.

This led to violence, particularly in Bosnia in the early 90’s when
Radovan Karadic, the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, declared in Bosnian
parliament that the Muslims "would disappear from the face of the
earth."

The current Kosovo crisis began in 1998 when its countrymen fought
for independence and Milosevic began what was referred to as
"operation horseshoe" — a Serbian plan to ethnically-cleanse Kosovo
of all Albanian-Muslims. These atrocities lead to NATO and U.S.
bombing operations in the region, after which the UN declared the
special status of the province.

The Indonesian government should not focus on the historical claims
of Kosovo. Instead, the large-scale injustices that have occurred in
Kosovo and the current political situation in Serbia should be
analyzed.

Serbia is just as nationalist today as it was at the time of the
Kosovo violence. The people supported their incarcerated president
and now most of the Serb war criminals are still free, due to Serb
support. The Serbs still consider the abuses that took place, such as
rape camps, were simply normal conditions of war and therefore, do
not see the generals as criminals but freedom fighters.

Indonesia, as the most populous Muslim country in the world, must
approach this issue from an Islamic point of view. Sovereignty, in
Islam, is left not to man but to God. The purpose of a nation is to
foster the positive things in this world; it is not in itself the
purpose of its existence. This means that a nation must promote
humanity; a moral and technical evolution.

When a state acts in a way that violates human rights, it has
violated its sovereignty and is subject to dismemberment. It was this
reasoning that caused the early Muslims to disperse beyond the
surrounding tyrants of the Medinan State.

During the decline of the Ottoman Empire many abuses occurred that
made the empire’s rule irrelevant and caused the Europeans to
advocate for the abolishment of it.

In Bulgaria, many massacres occurred under sanctions of the Sultanate
through Tatar irregulars. Armenians were massacred on the Anatolian
mainland by Kurdish irregulars and Turkish forces.

It is obvious that secular nationalism has not been able to solve
problems within civil society. The state needs to adopt a more
benevolent view. In a way, secularism has allowed religious societies
to ‘reboot’ and a more enlightened view of the role of religion in
society is now needed.

The only way forward is to allow the Kosovars to assume rule to the
best of their ability.

Pennsylvania State University, works with Trisakti University in
Jakarta on its Islamic Economics and Finance program.

BAKU: Mediators Meet Aliyev

MEDIATORS MEET ALIYEV

Baku Sun, Azerbaijan
June 1 2007

BAKU – International mediators Wednesday urged Armenia and Azerbaijan
to reach a compromise over the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Envoys from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s
so-called Minsk Group of mediators, which include France, Russia and
the United States, held talks Wednesday with Azerbaijani President
Ilham Aliyev. A statement said that the mediators had staged the
diplomatic mission "because of the need to promote a peaceful
settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict."

The statement added that "now is the time for the sides to reach
agreement on the basic principles of a settlement."

Since then, violence has risen sharply, and the two countries’
presidents have traded increasingly bellicose statements. The lack of
final resolution over the enclave’s status has long tied up investment
in the strategic, oil-rich Caucasus region.

VAHIT ERDEM: IF NATO DECIDES, TURKISH SOLDIERS WILL HAPPILY GO TO KARABAKH

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
June 1 2007

"NATO has two strongest members, Turkey is one of them. Turkish
soldiers participate almost in all peacekeeping operations of NATO- in
Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and other regions. Turkey has historical
background in the Balkans so its army is in high favor with the
Balkans", Vahit Erdem, Turkish parliament NATO group’s chairman,
AKP member (Turkish Justice and Development Party) said.

He said Turkey’s taking control over peacekeeping forces of NATO in
Kosovo is natural and assured Turkish Army will successfully carry
out this mission.

Touching upon sending peacekeepers including Turkish soldiers to
Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict zone Vahit Erdem said NATO is not
planning such operation yet. "If NATO decides it, Turkey will join
this campaign as Turkey has close historical links with the Caucasus
too. So deploying Turkish soldiers to Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone
will be useful for everyone," he concluded.

TRAGEDIE ARMENIENNE – LE MAS DES ALOUETTES DE PAOLO ET VITTORIO TAVIANI. A. C.

Dommage. Le sujet, lui, reste fort !
