The names of those who intend to run for presidency is not known yet,
but the name of Gagik Tsarukyan who does not want to run for presidency
in known.

"I repeat that Tsarukyan keeps his word and I have already said that
I do not need a post, I like my job and I do it with love. The post
is not important, the most important is when a person enjoys the
respect and the love of people with his job he does for them",-
announced the head of the "Prosperous Armenia" party Gagik Tsarukyan.

The "Prosperous Armenia" party has signed an agreement with the
"Republican Party of Armenia" to protect a united candidate. May
Gagik Tsarukyan protect the candidature of Levon Ter-Petrosyan or
not protect Serge Sragsyan? "You ask such ridiculous questions.

Tsarukyan has never deceived a person. I have signed a document and
carry the responsibility, thus I will fulfill my duty and my job",-
said Mr Tsarukyan.

To the question whether he will protect Sargsyan despite the
disagreement between them, Tsarukyan responded: "If I do not know
that there is a disagreement between us, how can you know that?"

Tsarukyan has no idea about the future of Robert Kocharyan, but
considers that he may be tired and that his experience may be of great
benefit for our country. "He is well-prepared, he is experienced and
his job is of great use for our nation".

Public Education Fairness Network welcomes support
from Catholic Church

TORONTO, Sept. 9 /CNW/ – The Public Education Fairness Network
today welcomed the unequivocal support of Ontario’s Catholic Church
leadership for fairness in education.

"The public funding of Catholic schools recognizes that parents
have the right to make educational choices for their children, and
that the state should assist them," said a news release from the
Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Bishops reiterated their commitment that "the best education
for all students impels us to respect and support the wishes of
parents in other faith communities for religious education in the
public school system or for alternative schools which will reflect
their values and beliefs."

David Koschitzky, Vice Chair, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto,
representing both UJA Federation and Canadian Jewish Congress said
that "This clear Catholic endorsement of government support for
faith-based schools opens a new chapter in our quest for fairness in a
more inclusive public education system in Ontario. This is a giant
stride toward the civil discussion needed on this issue."

"All Ontarians have a stake in a fair and strong public education
system.

The support of the Catholic Church is especially welcome, because
publicly supported Catholic schools are shining examples of how
faith-based education contributes to a vibrant and pluralistic
society," added Sivan Karshafian, a member of the ARS Armenian School
Board.

"This show of solidarity is especially important to demonstrate
that public education fairness is an issue around which we, as proud
Ontarians, should unite. It’s not something to be feared," said
Mustafa Khalil Rawji of the As-Sadiq Islamic School.

Approximately 650,000 Catholic students are enrolled in Ontario’s
publicly funded, faith-based Catholic school system, whereas 53,000
children from other faith-based schools are shut out of public
education.

The Public Education Fairness Network is comprised of members of
the Armenian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh communities who have come
together to advocate for the inclusion of all Ontario faith-based
schools that meet provincial standards in public education. Ontario is
the only province to support one faith-based school system to the
exclusion of others.

Presidential Elections

Serge Sargsian is competitive candidate especially in case of competing
with Levon Ter-Petrosian, Eduard Sharmazanov, spokesman of Republican
Party of Armenia said at the press conference. He added that the party
will nominate prime minister Serzh Sarkisian as a candidate for next
year’s presidential election.

Eduard Sharmazanov, the party’s spokesman, said to a news conference
that the party will field Sarkisian ‘because there is a great public
demand for it."He said the party has a clear-cut political platform,
a skilled team and Serzh Sarkisian as a seasoned leader, who enjoys
a high popularity. As evidence he emphasized that the party took a
sweeping victory in the May 12 parliamentary elections.

"If the Republican Party received only 10-15 percent of the vote (in
the parliamentary elections) it would never think about nominating
its presidential candidate,’ Sharmazanov said, adding that the final
decision belongs to the party’s congress, scheduled for late autumn.

In response to the question about the media speculations that
ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosian is contemplating a political comeback
and may join the presidential race, the Republican Parity’s spokesman
said it is meaningless to speak now about ‘the historical necessity
of Ter-Petrosian’s nomination,’ because ‘historical necessity emerges
when a country is experiencing a lingering crisis, which is not the
case with Armenia." "Armenia has penetrated into the second stage of
reforms and there is no public demand, neither historical necessity
for Ter-Petrosian’s return,’ he said.

considerably change the world’s attitude about the Genocide," First
Secretary of the French Socialist Party Francois Hollande told a news

change the course of the American-Turkish relations. I wouldn’t say
they will deteriorate but they will be different," Mr Hollande said.

The H. Res. 106 urges the U.S. President to use term ‘genocide’ in
his annual April 24 statement. It was introduced by Representative

"To overcome energy dependency of Armenia and become an energy
exporting country the construction of the nuclear power plant must be
speed up and it must not again become a victim of Armenia’s external
dispositions," Chairman of National Democratic Party (AJK) Shavarsh
Kocharyan told a meeting with reporters today also saying the solution
of the problem must be "open and transparent." In his words, not less
important for the Armenian economy is the construction of Armenia-Iran
railway, which will be in the interests of Georgia, as well.

Speaking about the new nuclear power plant, the chairman of "Freedom"
party, ex-prime minister Hrant Bagratyan mentioned that in 1996
that issue was discussed during Levon Ter-Petrosyan- Jacques Chirac
meeting. He raised his surprise why the issue is "frozen" for 10
years. He reminded that according to an arrangement with the European
Union, Armenia’s nuclear power plant must have been shut down this
year but the deadline has been prolonged until 1012.

NEW TIMES LEADER PROMISED REVELATIONS REGARDING OCTOBER 27

Armenia

The leader of the Nor Jamanakner Party (New Times) broke his political
pause on September 3, held a news conference and said he will make
sensational revelations of the internal and external policies since
1992 in the pre-election period. Besides, Aram Karapetyan promised
to reveal information on October 27.

"If I said in the parliamentary election it was going to be a
bestseller, now I say it is going to be a super bestseller," says the
leader of the New Times Party. He also says he can account for what
he says at the court of law. The reporters asked where he had got
the information. The leader of the New Times Party says "from under
the doormat, the president said." After this joke Aram Karapetyan
said he got the information from his sources in the special services
of Armenia.

The leader of the New Times Party said this in speaking about his
summer vacation which he spent in Moscow and five other countries:
"Austria, Germany, Czech, France and so on." He met with politicians in
these countries, and those were fruitful meetings. During these meeting
he tried to dispel the impression that the National Security Service
of Armenia has created about him in the world. Aram Karapetyan says
our special services provided information to foreign political circles
with facts that Aram Karapetyan’s mother is a Jew, the father is not
dead, he is a drug baron, his brother is a criminal. "They had provided
documents that nearly convinced even me," Aram Karapetyan says. He says
therefore he needed to have meetings abroad and explain it was clear
slander aimed to deprive Aram Karapetyan of international support.
