Careers in science not appealing to the country’s youth

`There is a serious concern in our scientific field today, and that is
the change of generations,’ National Academy of Science president
Radik Martirosyan said today, answering our question as to whether the
lack of financing is the only problem facing science in Armenia today.

`We have a lot to do. The desire to follow a career in science is low
in our youth. We can’t persuade our youth that a career in science is
attractive, as they see that the social problems facing young
scientists are not being solved,’ Martirosyan pointed out. But, he
said, there are dedicated youth in the field, and they are working in
science in spite of the difficulties they face.

Martirosyan announced that in important scientific journals published
around the world in the past five years, Armenian physicists are in
third place, behind Russia and Ukraine, in the number of scientific
articles published. The articles bring fame to our scientists around
the entire world.

Armenia is in the focus of attention in the region

AZG Armenian Daily #202, 03/11/2007

Regional

ARMENIA IS IN THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION IN THE REGION

Turkologist, Director of NAA (National Academy of Armenia) Institute
of Oriental Studies Ruben Safrastian was the guest of "Hayatsk" club
on Wednesday. He touched upon the three factors in the region,
mentioning that the Armenian factor has gained a significant role in
the world and especially Turkish policy. "In this case, Armenia is in
the focus of attention in the region", he added.

The situation in Iraqi Kurdistan is full of serious consequences

Ruben Safrastian is sure that the latest developments around Iraqi
Kurdistan of the North Iraq are full of serious
consequences. According to him, if Turkey starts a war, it will raise
the Kurdish factor not only in the region, but also in Turkey. The
leading "Justice and development" party has many Kurd members, and in
case of military operations, Turkey will lose part of its support and
will weaken. Besides, the Kurdish "Democratic society" party,
registered in Turkey, appealed Turkey for adding a point about the
local autonomy of Kurdistan.

Consequently, according to Safrastian, Turkey feels the activization
of the Kurdish factor not only politically, but also economically, and
it will not perform wide military operations.

"Turkey uses the threats about wide military operations to strengthen
its position in the region and to show the regional countries that it
is a center of power", underlined Ruben Safrastian.

Turkey decreased its efforts to be integrated in EU

Turkey is not only involved in the Middle Eastern policy recently, but
also it finds there the bases for strengthening its position,
according to the Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies,

"Turkish European diplomacy has weakened recently, in this case EU
attitude is not important for Turkey", he said.

Adoption of Resolution 106 is the Armenians’ victory

Mr. Safrastian is sure that adoption of Resolution 106 by US House of
Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee is the victory of all
Armenians that showed the role of the Armenian factor in the world.
"Armenian factor has its place in the world, and Turkey could only
slow down that process with its menaces", mentioned the Turkologist.

Russia is still the leader in the region

"Russian diplomacy shows intentions in the recent period to recover
the spheres of influences of the former USSR in the Middle East. What
about the present crisis in North Iraq, Russia still shows a waiting
attitude to those incidents. But we should not forget that Russia has
close relations with Kurdish organizations and kept those
connections", announced Mr. Safrastian. According to him, Russia still
keeps the leader’s position in the region thanks to the Russian
military bases allocated in Armenia, its wide economic relations, the
gas factor in Armenia and the political connections.

The situation of Georgia will not change anything in the region

The regime of Sahakashvili is greatly supported by the United States,
and the Georgian opposition also doesn’t have a well-disposed attitude
towards Russia. In this case if the Georgian opposition can fall down
the regime of Sahakashvili, it will not change the whole geopolitical
situation in the region, according to Ruben Safrastian.

The Islamic factor will not change the regime in Azerbaijan

"Though Azerbaijani authorities and Americans do everything to weaken
the Islamic factor, it becomes stronger mainly thanks to Islamic
extremist representatives. It’s not an anti-Americanism, it’s Islamism
that, of course, has a strong anti-Americanism. I don’t think that
this Islamic factor will change the regime in Azerbaijan", mentioned
Ruben Safrastian.

Armenian prime minister to take part in the events devoted to the start
of maintenance work of the deposit in Teghut

ArmInfo. Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargyan left for Lori region to
participate in the events devoted to the start of maintenance work of
the deposit in Teghut, Saturday, ArmInfo was told at the press service
of the Armenian Government.

To recall, on November 1, Armenian Government approved the project of
Armenian Copper Programme (ACP) of commissioning the copper-molybdenum
deposit in Teghut in the North of Armenia. The program cost makes up
about $200-250mln and the duration of the project is 30-40years.
According to preliminary estimations, ore reserves in the deposit make
up 450mln tons, copper reserves-1,6mln tons with an average content of
0,355%, and molybdenum reserves-99 000 tons with an average content of
0,021%. It is planned to add 25-30 thsd tons of copper and 800tons of
molybdenum annually, which will ensure 40- 50% of gross copper
production and 20%-of gross molybdenum production of the republic. The
risk of ecological damage because of felling is the biggest problem, as
the deposit will be exploited by open method.

If Not Islamofascism, What Name To Give?

IF NOT ISLAMOFASCISM, WHAT NAME TO GIVE?
Dr. Alamgir Hussain

American Chronicle, CA
Nov 2 2007

The media have been abuzz in recent weeks condemning the Islamofascism
Awareness Week, held last week in College and University campuses
across America. The event was organized by former communist turned
conservative activist, David Horowitz, and his Freedom Centre.

This event was marked to create awareness about the danger of
Islamic extremism and terrorism, the oppression of women (polygamy,
honour-killings, & genital mutilations) and persecution of minorities
in Islamic countries, and the fanatical Jew-hatred among Muslims etc.

Horowitz’s Freedom Centre also takes aim at the American left, who
have made the educational institutions as exclusive forts of their
propaganda, impregnable to contrary views. He also accuses the left
of forming an unassailable alliance with the dangerous Islamists,
who will make every effort to destroy the very ideals ¯ secularism,
democracy, liberalism, human rights, and rights of homosexuals etc. ¯
which they holds dear.

Looking at what is happening in Islamic countries; Horowitz is not at
all wrong about his apprehensions of what would transpire when Muslims
become dominant in western countries, which they will at least in
Europe by 2050. Horowitz rightly regrets that the left is staunchly
against his campaign, when they should be on his site. I think it is
the left who should take the lead in this awareness campaign.

The major focus of criticism of Horowitz’s Islamofascism Week is that
the term, Islamofascism, tends to lump all Muslims together as fascists
or terrorists. Fox News Channel anchor Alan Colmes, told Horowitz that
"The words, the phrase ‘Islamo-fascism’ is hate speech.

It equates an entire religion with fascism." Although became popular
after President Bush once uttered it, the term "Islamo-fascism"
was coined by secular Muslims to describe the murderous ideology and
activities of the Islamic radicals in the bloody civil war-stricken
Algeria.

Horowitz, however, has been at pains trying to explain that he does
not put all Muslims in the same balance. In stead, his message is
targeted at a segment of Muslims, who use a fascistic and violent
strain within Islam. He went on to explain in an interview that
although not all Italians were fascists in the 1930-40s, yet Italian
fascism was a widely accepted phrase. Italian fascism did not mean that
all Italians were fascists. So, it is groundless that Islamofascism
lumps all Muslims together as fascists. But neither of his detractors,
the Muslims and the leftists, would ever listen.

The result turned out just as expected. The left on campuses ganged
up with the Muslim Students Association ¯ founded, according to
Journalist Joe Kaufman, by the militant Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood
¯ to disrupt the Islamofascism Week talks. They created disruption
and chaos in most campuses making it impossible for Horowitz and his
co-speakers express their views.

Quite correctly, Horowitz calls American university and colleges to be
the impregnable forts of leftist propaganda. Amidst deafening shouting
and jeers at his Emory lecture, a frustrated Horowitz said with good
deal of justification that "This is exactly what the fascists did
in Germany in the 1930s." And ironically, organizations like the
National Project to Defend Dissent & Critical Thinking in Academia
joined hands in creating these fascist-style disruptions.

Can Horowitz be faulted for condemning the left for forming an unholy
alliance with the dangerous Islamists?

Let us now have a brief look at what Muslims have brought to the
West. In November 2005, Muslim youths in France rioted and vandalized
cars, homes and properties for weeks, leading to even death of
an elderly man. Some 100,000 cars were vandalized or set on fire by
French Muslim rioters and vandals in one year. Taking cues from their
French brethren in action, Muslims in Belgium took it up on them to
spread the Intifada in Brussels at the time.

Muslims in Netherlands engaged in similar Intifada by rioting and
setting cars on fire for more than a week since October 14, protesting
the death of a young Muslim, who was shot dead as he started stabbing
two policewomen entering a police station in Amsterdam. The two
policemen, critically wounded, narrowly escaped death.

At the same time, Turkish immigrants engaged in vandalism of Armenian
properties and attacking Armenians in Brussels, protesting the
U.S. initiative for recognizing the Turkish genocide of the Armenians.

This was followed by another round of riots, attacking buses and trams
and destroying cars and shops, in Brussels’s Turkish quarters over the
rising tensions between Turkey and Kurdish rebels along Iraqi borders.

Such riots and vandalism are becoming increasingly common across
Europe in areas with high density of Muslims. Muslims have been
creating more and more ghettos ridden with violence and crimes,
which have become no-go zones for non-Muslim Europeans, even for
the police. If a non-Muslim girl happens to stray in those ghettos,
there is a high possibility that she will come out raped.

The term, Islamofascism, is not acceptable. Fair enough! But how
about a Stop Islamization of Europe rally, which one transnational
European group, wanted to bring about in Brussels to commemorate
9/11 this year? The secular-liberal fabric of western societies
¯ from New Zealand to Australia to Canada to Europe ¯ are being
aggressively Islamized by Muslim immigrants. To give a few examples:
airports must have a mosque; canteens in jails must have separate
quarters, cutlery and menu for Muslim inmates; school and university
canteens must remove pork and even alcohol from their premises;
and they must have separate public swimming pools or specific days
of the week exclusively for them. A A poll in 2006 found some 40%
British Muslims would prefer an Islamic Sharia law based governance
to replace the secular-democracy, while another poll in 2004 found 61%
Muslims want the Sharia court system in the U.K..

It was then very reasonable for those Europeans, seeking to protect
the secular and liberal fabric of their society from invasion by
often repressive and cruel Islamic values and cultures, to hold a
Stop Islamization of Europe rally. But this is not acceptable to
Muslims either. For them, this rally also lumps all Muslims together
and stigmatize them. They were determined to prevent the rally with
violence if needed. The leftist mayor of Brussels, heavily dependent
on Muslim votes, took firm steps to prevent the rally, for the duel
reasons of not upsetting his Muslim vote-bank and of the fear of
violence by Muslims. Yet, he had no qualms about a militant Islamist
group, who say the 9/11 was done by the Bush administration, to bring
out a rally on 11th September to condemn the war on terrorism.

The mayor rightly feared the likely unleashing of violence by Muslims
if the rally went ahead. The Danish chapter of the Stop Islamization
of Europe brought out a small rally on 21st November in Copenhagen,
a city having much fewer Muslims than Brussels with 25-30% Muslims.

Anders Gravers, the organizer of the event, and his three associates,
including two women, as they arrived for the rally, came under attack
by Muslim thugs, armed with knifes and iron-rods, which left three
associates hospitalized with bloodied head and face. Anders Gravers
was probably saved by a bullet-proof vest he was wearing.

To these should be added the murder of Dutch filmmaker, Theo van Gogh,
for making a film on the mistreatment of Muslim women in Islam, the
death-warrants and widespread violent demonstrations over publishing
Prophet Muhammad’s cartoons in a Danish paper in 2005, and the
death-threats and large-scale vandalism over Salman Rushdie’s novel,
The Satanic Verses (1989). There are numerous terrorist cells, directly
or ideologically allied with the Al-Qaeda in western countries. Apart
from the Madrid (March 2004) and London (July 2005) bombings, numerous
terrorist plots often against civilian targets have been aborted in
Europe, Australia, Canada and the U.S. The law enforcement agencies
are watching 5000 Muslims for terrorist activities in Britain and 2000
in Australia ¯ a phenomenon which extends across all western countries.

The Little Mermaid statue at the entrance of Copenhagen harbour was
found found draped in Islamic veil in May, while naked statues across
Germany were found found veiled with Islamic garbs in September.

These veiling incidents, which are becoming increasingly common
across Europe, highlight how Muslims would change the western liberal
societies to fit Islamic life-style and culture. When Muslims cannot
tolerate lifeless statues in their natural state, how long will they
tolerate the liberally (scantily) dressed real women walk on the
streets of Europe?

What should one call these activities brought to the West exclusively
by Muslim immigrants? Whatever name you give, these are all acts and
signs of fascism with no doubt. Other immigrants, such as the Chinese
or the Hindus, have not brought the same troubles. Muslims differ from
them only in their religion. If any logical or sensible name is to be
given to this brand of fascism, it got to be Islamofascism or Muslim
fascism. Islamofascism associates it with a strain of radical thoughts
within the ideology of Islam, while Muslim fascism obviously lumps all
Muslims together. When Islamofascism is unacceptable, Muslim fascism is
going to be even less acceptable to Muslims and their leftist allies.

You give it a name or not, there is no doubt that a brand of fascism,
brought by Muslim immigrants, has been spreading across western
nations with increasing intensity. While chatting about these issues
with Mr. Jamal Hasan, a coeditor of Beyond Jihad – Critical Voices
from Inside Islam, he told me: "Have you considered what would have
transpired if Salman Rushdie’s novel or Prophet Muhammad’s cartoons
were published after a few decades, when Muslims are projected to
become the dominant population in Europe?" One agrees or not, this
is one single issue, all westerners, the liberal-left in particular,
should be most concerned about.

Why Pelosi Is ‘Committee Of One’

WHY PELOSI IS ‘COMMITTEE OF ONE’
by Robert Novak, The Chicago Sun-Times

Chicago Sun Times
November 1, 2007 Thursday
Final Edition

A story told in cloakrooms of the House of Representatives shows
how ironic life on Capitol Hill can be. Jim McCrery, the low-key,
hardworking ranking Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, has
spent all year trying to establish good relations with the tax-writing
committee’s first Democratic chairman in 12 years, Charles Rangel. He
succeeded, only to discover that Rangel does not really run Ways and
Means. Nancy Pelosi does.

Rangel so far looks like the weakest Ways and Means chairman during
my 50 years in Washington. That’s only because Pelosi so far is the
most powerful speaker of the House during that same period, a reality
obscured by her historic role as the first woman to hold that office.

She does not confer with or defer to standing committee chairmen,
whose predecessors made previous speakers dance to their tune.

On both sides of the aisle, the 67-year-old grandmother from San
Francisco is referred to as the "Committee of One" who rules the
House. Many speakers over the years relied on their majority leader.

But not Pelosi, who actually opposed Steny Hoyer’s election as
majority leader.

Ruling absolutely does not mean even Democrats think she rules well.

Her misguided effort to pass a resolution condemning the 1915
Armenian holocaust constitutes a rare public blunder, but beyond
that she has not crafted a coherent Democratic message. This month’s
Harris Poll puts her nationwide job disapproval ("fair" or "poor")
at 57 percent. But she is an icon at the Democratic grass roots,
and none of the committee chairmen who have been downgraded by her
utters a word of public criticism.

Rangel’s massive proposed tax reform released last week gets less
respect than what is normally accorded a Ways and Means chairman’s
plan because Pelosi is not on board.

Much the same treatment has been experienced by John Dingell, the
senior member of Congress, as Energy and Commerce Committee chairman.

In bygone days, Dingell deferred to neither Democratic presidents nor
speakers. But Pelosi is determined to pass an energy bill this year
even though it means crossing Dingell, who as a Detroiter opposes
Californian Pelosi on mileage and emission standards.

No committee chairman wants to take the risk of going public against
Pelosi, including one who sought her advice — and, hopefully,
support — on a controversial matter of House business. This anonymous
chairman was rebuffed by the speaker, who declined to talk to him,
either in person or over the telephone.

Being the "Committee of One" does not mean Pelosi is without
lieutenants. She is close to two fellow Californians, both fiercely
partisan, who head committees: George Miller (Education and Labor)
and Henry Waxman (Oversight and Government Reform). Miller is regarded
as her consigliere, always at her side. She is also considered close
to moderate chairmen Ike Skelton (Armed Services) and John Spratt
(Budget), plus liberal chairman Barney Frank (Financial Services).

However, that does not mean she always takes their advice. Skelton,
a seasoned student of international relations, told her the Armenian
resolution would antagonize Turkey and thus constituted a foreign
policy debacle in the making. Rahm Emanuel, the House Democratic Caucus
chairman, also opposed it (as he had when serving as President Bill
Clinton’s political aide).

The Armenian episode suggests a Pelosi decision has to approach the
brink of disaster before Democrats speak out. Her popularity in the
party beyond Capitol Hill is too great. When I asked one esteemed
Democratic operative whether Pelosi’s authority is without restraint,
he called that a sexist question because I never would ask that about
Sam Rayburn or Tip O’Neill. Indeed, I would not. They were not that
powerful.

ADL Supports Armenian Jewish Community In Condemnation Of Yerevan
State University

New York, NY, October 30, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
expressed support for the Armenian Jewish Community in their
condemnation of Yerevan State University, which recently honored
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with an honorary doctorate and
a medal.

"It is disgraceful for a reputable institution of higher learning to
honor a man who routinely compromises the rights of Iranian citizens,
and especially students and academics," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL
National Director. "We commend the Armenian Jewish Community for
speaking out against this poor judgment on the part of Yerevan State
University.

"It is one thing to provide a forum to speak, as universities are
environments where freedom of speech should be promoted and
encouraged," said Mr. Foxman. "However, it is quite another to
confer degrees and awards on a dictator who denies the Holocaust and
calls for the destruction of the state of Israel. Such tributes
should be reserved for those academics and world leaders who
rightfully deserve them."

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading
organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services
that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

ANKARA: Relations between Armenia and PKK Terrorism

Jo urnal of Turkish Weekly

Relations between Armenia and PKK Terrorism
Source:By Tetedeturc

*** By Tetedeturc ***

Changing their tactics after the ’80s as they encountered adverse
reactions from the world [sic]. Now, it was time for PKK to carry on
the mission. Their first terrorist act started at Eruh and Semdimli in
1984 while the ASALA-Armenian terror receded to the background. Some
of the tangible proofs of the ties between Armenians and PKK are the
following:

The terrorist organisation PKK announced the period from 21 to 28
April 1980 as the "Red Week" and started to organise meetings on April
24 as the anniversary of the alleged genocide against Armenians.

The PKK and ASALA terror organisations held a joint press conference
on 8 April 1980 at the City of Sidon in Lebanon where they issued a
declaration. Since this drew a considerable reaction, they decided
that their relations should be maintained on a clandestine basis. The
responsibility of the attacks launched against the Turkish Consulate
General in Strasbourg on 9 November 1980 and the Turkish Airline
office in Rome on 19 November 1980 were undertaken jointly by the
ASALA and PKK. Abdullah Öcalan, leader of the separatist terror
organisation, was elected to the honorary membership of the Armenian
Authors’ Association for "his contributions to the idea of Greater
Armenia". A Kurdistan Committee was formed within the Armenian Popular
Movement like in many European countries.

On 4 June 1993, a meeting was held at the headquarters of PKK
terrorist organisation at West Beyrouth with the participation of
representatives from the Armenian Hinchak Party, ASALA and PKK.

Another striking example of the Armenian-PKK ties are the following
resolutions adopted in meetings held at two separate churches from 6
to 9 September 1993 with the participation of Lebanese Armenian
Orthodox Archbishop, officials of the Armenian Party and about 150
youth leaders :

A somewhat sedate attitude should be reserved toward Turkey for the
time being. The Armenian community is on the way to growth and better
economic strength. The propaganda activities have started to make the
genocide claims better understood in the rest of the world. The newly
founded Armenian State with a constantly growing territory will
definitely avenge the ancestors of its citizens. The Western powers
and particularly the United States side with and favour the Armenians
in the combat for Nagorno Karabakh. This opportunity should be well
exploited as more and more Armenian young men join the ranks in this
fight. The perpetual terrorist attacks in Turkey (meaning the PKK’s
actions) will continue and eventually collapse the country’s economy,
leading to an uprising by the entire population. Turkey will be
abolish and a Kurdish State will be formed. Armenians will hold good
relations with the Kurds and support their fight. Territories
presently held by the Turks will the Armenian’s tomorrow.

PUBLICATION ORGANS OF TERRORIST ORGANISATION PKK IN ARMENIA

The newspapers Reya Taze and Bota Redaksiyon are published in Armenia
in Cyrillic alphabet under the control of terrorist organisation PKK
with the help of PKK members coming from Turkey and Europe and carries
out propaganda for the PKK.

PKK-ASALA RELATIONS

The Armenian terrorism at international first started basis in 1973
and began to gain impetus after the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation with
attacks or terrorist nature against Turks and Turkish representations
abroad with sabotages and outright assaults.

Upon resurrection of the Kurdish terrorist movement that began to show
itself in a variety of legal political entities from ’70s onward, the
Armenian terror organisation ASALA ceded its place in 1984 to the PKK
that killed without distinction of Turk or Kurd in a bloodthirsty
manner under the guidance of Abdullah Öcalan.

Yet in prior to that date, of the co-operation between terrorist
organisations ASALA and PKK was known manifesting in the training of
ASALA militants at PKK’s trannie camps, the joint operations and
declamations by them both and training support provided at the PKK
camps by Armenian experts, not to mention the organic ties between the
terrorist organisation PKK and Armenian Tashnak Sutyun Party.

The common goal of the co-operation between the terrorist
organisations PKK and ASALA is to establish States in Turkey’s
Southeastern and Eastern under the Marxist-Leninist ideology. Since,
however, an overview of the areas on which both organisations had
schemes, it may be deduced that one of these organisations acts as the
other’s mercenaries.

An examination of the discovered documents revealed that the militants
of ASALA and PKK terrorist organisations underwent training at the
Bekaa and Zeli camps.

1987 AGREEMENT BETWEEN PKK AND ARMENIANS

An agreement was concluded between the separatist terror organisation
PKK and Armenians in 1987. Following are the highlights of this
agreement:

1. Armenians will be involved in training activities within the PKK
terror organisation.

2. Five thousand American Dollars per annum will be paid to the PKK
terror organisation per capita by the Armenian side.

3. The Armenians will participate in the small-scale operations.

As the Armenian component began to acquire a significantly elevated
position within the organisation as a result of this agreement, the
following resolutions were adopted in a meeting held on 18 April 1990
with a person named Hermes Samurai, reported to be the official
responsible for the PKK-ASALA relations:

1. The PKK and ASALA terrorist organisations will be under a joint
command from that date on.

2. The Armenians will undertake intelligence work on the Turkish
security forces.

3. Territories gained through the expected revolution will be equally
shared between the parties.

4. Seventy-five percent of training camp expenses will be borne by the
Armenians.

5. Operations will be conducted at the metropolitan cities in Turkey.
The terrorist organisation PKK that moved its bases into Northern Iraq
after because of very heavy blows dealt in the transborder operations
and lost all possibilities of sheltering there is known to have
entered into arrangements for shifting some of its cadres to Iran and
Armenia where it started an active subversive operation toward Turkey.

It has also been learned that a group of European representatives of
the terrorist organisation PKK paid a visit to Armenia where they
concluded an agreement with the Armenian leaders for the unhindered
ingress to and egress from Kars region by their militants, that
Armenia offered sheltering, monetary and equipment support to the
Kurdish settlements in that country following the dissolution of the
Soviet Union and the formal proclamation of the Armenian Republic.
Similarly, a group of militants of the terrorist organisation PKK left
Urmiah for Armenia on three vehicles on 19 and 20 May 1992 for
fighting against Azerite Turks together with the Armenians.
