Preview: Armenia vs. Liechtenstein – prediction, team news, lineups

By Adepoju Marvelous

Armenia play host to Liechtenstein at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium on Wednesday seeking an immediate response to a huge defeat last time out.

On the other hand, Liechtenstein have neither picked up a win nor a point after the first five round of matches and have it all to do in World Cup 2022 Qualifying Group J.

Serge Gnabry
put the Germans in the box seat with a brace inside the opening 15 minutes, before further goals from Marco ReusTimo WernerJonas Hofmann and Karim Adeyemi completed the rout.

Consequently, Joaquin Caparros's men have dropped to second spot in the group, with the likes of Romania and North Macedonia now beginning to bear down on them.

Next up for Armenia is a meeting against a Liechtenstein side who they have not lost to in any of the previous five encounters dating back to 2018.

Wednesday's hosts were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory in the most recent clash back in March, when an 83rd-minute own goal from Noah Frommelt settled the tie.

Liechtenstein suffered a fifth consecutive defeat in their qualifying campaign, losing 2-0 against Romania at the National Arena on Sunday.

The damage was done in the first half where goals from Alin Tosca and Cristian Manea put Martin Stocklasa's men to the sword in Bucharest.

With no points on the board and just one goal scored so far, the Blues-Reds are rooted to the foot of the group, 10 points behind their next opponents.

Wednesday's visitors would need to pick up maximum points from their five remaining games and also hope that results elsewhere go their way, so it is safe to say that they are down and out already.

Armenia's Hovhannes Hambardzumyan was off hauled with an injury less than one hour into his side's defeat to Germany, making him a doubt for this one.

David Terteryan was Hambardzumyan's replacement in the aforementioned game and the former is expected to be given the nod should the latter be deemed unfit to participate.

Nicolas Hasler has scored more goals for Liechtenstein than any other active player, and the Thun midfielder will need to be at his best if the visitors are to stand any chance of getting a positive result.

Roman Spirig will be pushing for a place in the XI after was handed his national team debut in a 10-minute cameo appearance off the bench last time out.

Armenia possible starting lineup:
Yurchenko; Hovhannisyan, Voskanyan, Haroyan, Terteryan; Bayramyan, Angulo, Grigoryan, Adamyan; Barseghyan, Mkhitaryan

Liechtenstein possible starting lineup:
Buchel; Goppel, Hofer, Malin, Grunenfelder, Wolfinger; Hasler, N. Frick, Frommelt; Y. Frick, Kardesoglu

Armenia, in search of a positive response to last week's defeat, are favourites to claim all three points in this one against a side struggling at both ends of the field. We expect the home to come out on top, scoring plenty of goals en route to a comfortable victory.

Surrealist novel The Fleeting City takes down Armenia’s social taboos | Calvert Reads

The Calvert Journal
Aug 23 2021
Text: Lucía de la Torre

Dubbed a “virtual movie-novella” for its vivid style, The Fleeting City is a part-absurdist, part-surrealist book following a group of friends as they journey across Armenia.

When protagonists Gagik and Grigor strike up an unlikely friendship with a Turkish traveller, writer Hovhannes Tekgyozyan unleashes a whirlwind narrative that encompasses both sexuality and the supernatural. Keen to expand beyond the traditional tales of political corruption and economic struggle that fill Armenia’s contemporary literary canon, Tekgyozyan focuses on social taboos.

By mining the cavernous stronghold of Armenia’s many forbidden subjects, he finds a cache of lively, honest humour, delivered through vivid, sensory storytelling. With a touch of magical realism, The Fleeting City subtly knocks down the “forbidden fruits” of Armenian society, which still dominate the lives of the country’s younger generations: including homosexuality, premarital relations, and gender fluidity.

Published in 2012, The Fleeting City was Tekgyozyan’s first book, following two collections of short stories — Wooden Shirt and Glass Sun — and a number of plays staged by independent theatres in Armenia. Currently, he resides in France, where he continues to write novels.

This article is part of Calvert Reads, a series revisiting great works of literature across the ages.

Putin, Armenian PM discuss current issues of Nagorno-Karabakh settlement – Kremlin

TASS, Russia

Russian Politics & DiplomacyAugust 28, 0:07

MOSCOW, August 28. /TASS/. The current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh was the focus of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

"The sides discussed current issues of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement in the context of the implementation of agreements committed to paper in the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020 and January 11, 2021, and the current situation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border," it said.

Putin and Pashinyan also agreed to continue contacts at various levels.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the highland region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory that had been part of Azerbaijan before the Soviet Union break-up, but primarily populated by ethnic Armenians, broke out in February 1988 after the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992-1994, tensions boiled over and exploded into large-scale military action for control over the enclave and seven adjacent territories after Azerbaijan lost control of them. Talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement have been ongoing since 1992 under the OSCE Minsk Group, led by its three co-chairs – Russia, France and the United States.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. Under the document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides stopped at the positions that they had held and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Lachinsky corridor that connects Armenia with the enclave to exercise control of the ceasefire observance. Apart from that, a number of districts came over to Baku’s control.

The situation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been tense since May 12, when Armenia’s defense ministry said that Azerbaijani armed forces had tried to carry out "certain works" in a border area in Syunik Province in a bid to "adjust the border. Since then, the sides have been reporting border incidents from time to time.

Turkish press: Russia: Turkey works for world peace in Syria, Libya, Karabakh

Turkey is working to preserve world peace in crisis areas including Libya, Syria and Nagorno-Karabakh, Dmitry Polyanskiy, first deputy permanent representative of Russia to the United Nations, said Thursday, adding that both countries are cooperating in these areas.

Underlining the importance of Ankara for Moscow, Polyanskiy told reporters at the U.N. headquarters in New York, “Turkey is a neighboring country with which we have relations dating back centuries.”

A Russian-brokered deal on Nov. 10 halted a six-week conflict between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh and its surrounding areas, securing territorial gains for Azerbaijan. Turkey agreed with Russia that its troops would also monitor the cease-fire. Ankara and Moscow signed an agreement to establish a joint observation center in Nagorno-Karabakh.

On the other side, Turkey has frequently voiced that the two countries made significant contributions to the establishment of cease-fires in both Syria and Libya, while further steps need to be taken for Libya to reintegrate the country’s divided institutions.
