World Cup for the second time. Previously, Armenian wrestlers won
bronze medals at World Cup 2009 in France.

Armenia won 2 out of 4 fights vs. Scandinavian team and Cuba (both
with a score 7:0). In a fight for the 3rd place Armenian wrestlers
beat Russians 4:3, and were defeated by Iran, the winners, who took
on Turkey in the finals.

Roman Amoyan (w/c 55), Arsen Julfalakyan (w/c 74) and Yuri Patrikeev
(w/c 120) of the Armenia managed to win all combats. Two-time European
champion, world championship silver medalist and Olympic Games bronze
medalist Roman Amoyan participated in the World Cup for the first
time. "Of course, we are a little sad that we have not reached the
finals, but we will try to succeed next year," Roman Amoyan told a
PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

European Champion in 2009 Arsen Julfalakyan said that during the past
ten days he has won the second cup. "I am very pleased that we have
been able to achieve such a success," Julfalakyan said.

In combats vs. the Russian team, when the score was 3:3, everything
depended on the fight in 120-kg-weight category. Four-time European
champion, bronze medalist Yuri Patrikeev was able to win a victory
for the Armenian team: "I feel crazy feelings, I haven’t experienced
such things for a long time, you don’t often see such a great support
from fans. They filled me with strength. I understood that the
responsibility was on me and it pressed me psychologically a little.

All the guys had done their jobs, and I just had to win," Patrikeev
said.

A cold reception of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in Great Britain
seems not to be connected with the attitude of this country toward the
president and Armenia, former prime minister Grant Bagratyan told
journalists.

Serzh Sargsyan left for a working visit to London on February 9. At
the airport the Armenian delegation headed by the president was
welcomed by the Armenian ambassador in Great Britain and
representative of the Armenian Apostle Church. During the visit
Sargsyan did not meet with country’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

"I am more inclined to think that such a reception was the fault of
the organizers of the event for which the president was invited",
Bagratyan said. He considers that the visit was organized badly and
considered that the inviting side merely was unable to ensure the
president’s meeting with Gordon Brown. "It does not matter if the
visit was working or official. At least a telephone call could have
been organized with the British premier, not speaking of meeting
Armenian president at the airport", Bagratyan said.

On February 11, the Armenian government approved a draft amendment
to the law on international treaties, according to which Armenia
is entitled at any time before the entry into force of the signed
contract, to refuse to participate in the contract, stating this
intention.

Recall that a couple of months ago, Serge Sargsyan said he had asked
to work out amendments to the law on contracts in case Turkey would
delay the ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols and did not
ratify them in a reasonable time.

Armenian-Turkish-Iranian Cooperation Possible, Expert Says

ARMENIAN-TURKISH-IRANIAN COOPERATION POSSIBLE, EXPERT SAYS

news.am
Feb 11 2010
Armenia

Armenian-Turkish-Iranian cooperation, including historical,
psychological and cultural ties, is quite possible both if the
Armenian-Turkish border is reopened and if it is not, Karine
Gevorgyan, the well-known Russian specialist in Iranian studies,
told NEWS.am. "Even if high-level cooperation is not formalized,
it will be – and is actually – taking place at the average public
level and as business contacts," the expert said.

Gevorgyan holds the opinion that it will be effective cooperation. The
cooperation will be developing if Armenia and Turkey reject the
principle "the worse for the neighbor, the better for me." The
"historical tics", extremely negative public sentiments, are in
the past, Gevorgyan said. "Present-day pragmatism requires regional
cooperation, especially as Armenia has great drinking water prospects –
the country might supply fresh water to the Middle East," the expert
said.

As regards Iran’s more active involvement in the regional processes,
Iranian officials’ frequent visits to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey,
Gevorgyan pointed out that the world situation must be accounting
for this – declarations are so much different from the real state of
affairs that the situation is getting dangerous for Iran.

As regards, Iran’s possible involvement in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace
process, Gevorgyan said: "The Nagorno-Karabakh problem is a platform
for diplomatic intercourse and contacts for Iran. This is a window of
opportunity for discussing problems the sides are more concerned over,
and Iran is taking it."

NEWS.am reminds the readers that in his recent interview with Turkish
mass media, Iranian Ambassador to Turkey Bahman Hosseinpour welcomed
the Armenian-Turkish normalization process. He pointed out the
possibility of Iranian-Turkish-Armenian cooperation.

Iran and Armenia have been effectively cooperation for a long time.

This cooperation may develop into trilateral cooperation with Turkey
involved, Bahman Hosseinpour said.

Think Again: Be Resolute On Genocide Issue

THINK AGAIN: BE RESOLUTE ON GENOCIDE ISSUE
By Zanku Armenian

Glendale News Press
Feb 10 2010

In October, Turkey and Armenia signed a document called the
"protocols," which were intended to pave the way for the countries
to begin a reconciliation process that would open their borders,
establish diplomatic relations and perhaps tackle the biggest obstacle
between them, the issue of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

Many Armenian Americans expressed outrage at this proposed agreement
because it calls for a "historical commission" that would likely
examine the Armenian Genocide, which they feel is a ruse by Turkey to
deflect growing international pressure for recognition and further
their decades-old campaign to distort and deny the facts of the
Armenian Genocide.

The fear of the Armenian American community began coming true in April,
when President Obama used the potential of the protocols as a way to
avoid his campaign promise of January 2008. In that pledge, Obama said,
"America deserves a leader who speaks truthfully about the Armenian
Genocide and responds forcefully to all genocides. I intend to be
that president." Sure enough, in his first year in office, Obama
caved in to hollow threats from Turkey, avoiding the word "genocide"
in the White House’s annual commemoration message.

Often, we see our leaders compromise the nation’s core values for
the sake of relations with another country. We seem to do this for a
fleeting gain with regimes that run counter to our principles. Our
history is riddled with situations that have backfired, forcing us
to ultimately clean up the mess because of shortsighted policies —
Iraq and Afghanistan being the latest examples.

With the efforts of Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and many members
from the California congressional delegation, including bipartisan
support, once again there is a resolution before our lawmakers that
seeks to be truthful about our own American history by recognizing
the Armenian Genocide.

Rep. Howard Berman (D-Valley Village), chairman of the House Foreign
Affairs Committee, has scheduled a committee vote on House Resolution
252 for March 4. If passed by committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
would be poised to bring the resolution to the floor for a vote.

Viewing this resolution as an issue for the Armenian American community
would be a mistake. While the resolution recognizes the horrific
experiences of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide,
it also honors American values and how ordinary Americans stand
up to help the greater good. Just like we’ve sent help to Haiti in
the aftermath of the earthquake there, in the early 20th century,
Americans stood up and sent needed help to survivors of the Armenian
Genocide, without which the devastation would have been far worse.

Among the details recognized in HR 252 is that on Feb. 9, 1916, 94
years ago this week, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution resolving that
"the president of the United States be respectfully asked to designate
a day on which the citizens of this country may give expression to
their sympathy by contributing funds now being raised for the relief
of the Armenians." President Wilson concurred and encouraged the
formation of the organization called Near East Relief, chartered by
an Act of Congress, which ultimately contributed $116 million from
1915 to 1930 to aid survivors, including 132,000 orphans.

While HR 252 pays tribute to these important American contributions,
it also sends a clear message to the president: The change we want is
for our country’s policies to have integrity by reflecting the truth.

If, for the sake of having relations, we have complicity with a
country like Turkey, which has made political sport out of lying
about and denying genocides, we will have forsaken every American and
human principle. And that is unacceptable. Among the messages being
sent to Washington with recent special elections around the nation,
this needs to be one of them.

ArmInfo. Presidents of many countries fly over territories of other
states but leave no messages. President of Armenia by his message tried
to hint Turkey that it is time for it to act, says Vahan Hovhannisyan,
Head of ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party, said in press conference at Hayatsk
Debate Club.

He said President of Armenia warns that there is threat of process
of normalization of the Armenian- Turkish relations, Turkey must
understand that it may become the reason of failure, he said. Earlier

but makes little sense for the process.

The head of the ARF faction Vahan Hovhannisyan, assessing the
probability of the resumption of war between Armenia and Azerbaijan,
said that there is always a danger of war until there is no peace
agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He said that the point is
that the Azerbaijani people and the army are not ready for a war,
regardless the bellicose statements of the Azerbaijani government.

According to him, it is not important what the Azerbaijani government
propagates, the important is what people speak in their "kitchens".

In this relation, Vahan Hovhannisyan said that they have serious
information that a new flow of Azerbaijani youths is started into
Russian and Ukrainian cities. According to him, this means that with
each bellicose statement of Aliyev, a group of Azerbaijani youths
leaves because they would not like to serve in an army where officers
kill soldiers etc. As to Armenia, Vahan Hovhannisyan says to state
that Armenia is completely ready will not be right.

Armenia-EU Relations Should Not Be Opposed To Armenia-Russia Relatio

ARMENIA-EU RELATIONS SHOULD NOT BE OPPOSED TO ARMENIA-RUSSIA RELATIONS

PanARMENIAN.Net
10.02.2010 13:44 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In on the road to European integration Armenia
works in three areas: correspondence of laws, rules and standards to
European standards, political cooperation with EU bodies and social
cooperation, realized with NGOs, Victor Engibaryan , the chairman of
the European Movement of Armenia told a press conference in Yerevan.

"In the first area our government works very intensely and
successfully, political cooperation with the EU, I think, will open
a new era in the Armenia – EU relations ," Engibaryan said.

Speaking about the Armenia-EU-Russia triangle Viktor Yengibaryan said,
that Armenia-EU relations should not be opposed to Armenia-Russia
relations. " We must clearly define our relations with Russia and
the EU, and to understand who and in what sphere we work with" Victor
Engibaryan said.

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27
member states,] located primarily in Europe. Committed to regional
integration, the EU was established by the Treaty of Maastricht on 1
November 1993 upon the foundations of the European Communities. With
over 500 million citizens,[11] the EU combined generates an estimated
30% share (US$ 18.4 trillion in 2008) of the nominal gross world
product and about 22% (US$15.2 trillion in 2008) of the PPP gross
world product.

The EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of
laws which apply in all member states, ensuring the free movement of
people, goods, services, and capital. It maintains common policies
on trade, agriculture, fisheries] and regional development. Sixteen
member states have adopted a common currency, the euro, constituting
the Eurozone. The EU has developed a limited role in foreign policy,
having representation at the World Trade Organization, G8, G-20 major
economies and at the United Nations. It enacts legislation in justice
and home affairs, including the abolition of passport controls by
the Schengen Agreement between 22 EU and 3 non-EU states.

As an international organisation, the EU operates through a hybrid
system of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism.[18][19][20] In
certain areas, decisions are made through negotiation between member
states, while in others, independent supranational institutions are
responsible without a requirement for unanimity between member states.

Important institutions of the EU include the European Commission,
the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the Court
of Justice of the European Union, and the European Central Bank. The
European Parliament is elected every five years by member states’
citizens, to whom the citizenship of the European Union is guaranteed.

The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community
formed among six countries in 1951 and the Treaty of Rome formed in
1957 by the same states. Since then, the EU has grown in size through
enlargement, and in power through the addition of policy areas to
its remit.
