The Co-chairmen of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group said they are optimistic about the resolution
of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, during a press conference in Yerevan.

There are intentions and possibilities to settle this
conflict, U.S. Cochairman Matthew Bryza told the conference on
Monday. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said recently that
the conflict might be resolved within the next few months, Bryza said,
adding that in his opinion that was realistic.

quot; The parties to the conflict understand that it is possible to
make progress, but it is still difficult to set a timeframe. One thing
is clear – the sides will concentrate on a peace agreement once they
coordinate positions on fundamental [settlement] principles,quot;
Russian Co-chairman Yuri Merzlyakov said.

The intermediaries hope for a fruitful and constructive meeting of the
Armenian and Azeri presidents in Prague on May 7, French Co-chairman
Bernard Fassier said.

‘The presidents may also meet in St. Petersburg in June, but everything
will depend on their will and mutual understanding, quot; Fassier said.

The co-chairmen welcomed the closer relations between Armenia and
Turkey and the coordination of the normalization roadmap.

Merzlyakov rejected claims that Russia might withdraw its servicemen
from Armenia with the settlement of the Armenian-Turkish relations.

Baku. Lachin Sultanova – APA. US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse
was a guest of "Ambassador’s Hour" club at Baku Slavic University. The
diplomat spoke about the relationship between the United States and
the Russian Federation, APA reports. She laid out a few of the areas
where the Russian-American partnership can make the world a safer
and healthier place. "We can reduce the number of nuclear weapons
and work together to stop the spread of nuclear weapons elsewhere",
she said. According to her, still today, foreign correspondents love
to speculate about the "New Great Game," in which Russia, the United
States, Europe and Iran compete. "I’m here to tell you that there is
no New Great Game. The future of Azerbaijan — the future of all the
independent, sovereign nations of this region — is not subject to a
game. Your future is yours to decide. Not Moscow’s; not Washington’s;
not anyone else’s". The ambassador said it was natural that Russia
and Azerbaijan, as neighbors, had normal relations. "It is natural
that Russia’s economic, diplomatic and cultural ties with Azerbaijan
are solid and thriving. Azerbaijan would be a less dynamic nation
without them".

Anne Derse answered the questions of the faculty and staff. She said
her country was intensifying its efforts toward settlement of Nagorno
Karabakh conflict. "Concrete developments can be a sign of changes in
the region. These changes can appear fearful. The diplomat reminded
that OSCE Minsk Group US Co-chair Matthew Bryza visited the region
for six times over the last couple of weeks by the instructions of
the US President and the Secretary of State.

There are objective preconditions for normalization of ties between
the two countries, a diplomat, Professor David Hovhannisyan said in
an ACNIS round table devoted to the Armenian-Turkish relations. David
Hovhannisyan believes that Armenia and Turkey cannot live in hostility
for ever. "The current dialogue inspires us with certain optimism, and
I do want to believe that the relations between the two states will
normalize," David Hovhannisyan said, stressing Russia and Turkey’s
increasingly active role in the region. "Nevertheless, I don’t think
Armenia will make any concessions on Karabakh issue in case the border
is opened," the Armenian diplomat stressed.

In 200-2003, David Hovhannisyan was a member the Turkish-Armenian
Coordinating Committee (TARC) which discontinued its activities
because of Turkey’s reluctance to admit the Armenian Genocide and
refrain from interfering with Karabakh conflict.
