Armenian composer’s powerful music brings trio of collaborators together
By David Weininger, Globe Correspondent | November 29, 2009
The violist Kim Kashkashian has been a muse for several important
composers, having worked with and elicited new music from Luciano
Berio, György Kurtág, and Arvo Pärt, among many others. But her
bond with Tigran Mansurian is different. They are marking more than
two decades of collaboration with a rare series of American concerts
with percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky. The brief tour – in which
Mansurian will play piano and sing – begins Tuesday at Jordan Hall.
Their program includes music by Mansurian as well as his arrangements
of songs by Komitas Vartabed, the composer and musicologist who is
widely regarded as a pivotal figure in Armenian classical
music. Before he was arrested
and deported in 1915, Komitas (the name is sometimes written Gomidas)
spent years traveling the countryside, notating and arranging
thousands of the folk and religious songs he heard. Both Kashkashian
and Mansurian are of Armenian descent, and it was those songs – an
invaluable link to the country’s history – that brought the two
together.
Speaking by phone, Kashkashian recalls playing some arrangements of
Komitas’s songs in the late 1980s; to get what she calls `a more or
less original take on them,” she traveled to Armenia to
hear Mansurian play and sing them. The encounter was transformative.
`I was so entranced by what he was doing,” she says. `It was so
powerful, so potent that I took a little tape recording of the event
with me to Munich,” the home of ECM Records, Kashkashian’s
label. There she played the tape for two colleagues: Manfred Eicher,
ECM’s founder, and Schulkowsky, with whom Kashkashian worked
frequently.
`And we sat there, all of us, with tears in our eyes,” the violist
remembers. `Because it was so spectacular and for us something
intimate and powerful and unique. And at that time we said,
`We’ve got to do something about this.’ ”
What resulted was a 2003 recording called `Hayren,” in which the trio
played Komitas’s arrangements and Mansurian’s own works. On the
recording, Mansurian’s voice sounds raw and almost painfully
constricted, a world away from what you would expect from a trained
singer. It’s unusual enough that in the program he’s credited with
`vocals” instead of =80=9Csinging.” But the appeal, says
Kashkashian, lies in
something deeper.
`The rawness which you hear, and the unpracticed quality, really let
through the incredible depth of emotion and knowledge of the people,
of the land, of the circumstances of the nation – its blood,”
she says. `I really believe that it’s something that needs
to be heard.”
What Komitas did was to bring the ancient past into a form that modern
Armenians – and Westerners – could understand and embrace. In a way,
Kashkashian says, Mansurian’s own music does the same thing. `We talk
about him as a contemporary European-trained composer with all those
techniques at his disposal,” she explains. `But we’re also talking
about him as being rooted in the Armenian church and
folk music of the past. So when I hear a piece of Tigran’s, I get both
things. It’s like a red thread that goes through all his music.”
Tuesday’s concert opens with three Taghs, ancient religious chants
that Mansurian has fashioned for viola and percussion. Also on the
program
are two groups of Komitas’s songs, four of Mansurian’s own
songs transcribed for viola and piano, and a lengthy duet for
Kashkashian and Schulkowsky. `You notice how everything feeds on
everything else,” Kashkashian says. `You definitely sense the flavor
of the nation, the flavor of the geography, both emotional and
physical, in all the works – in the ones that were written two years
ago as well as the ones that were a couple centuries ago.”
If that’s the case, it will be due not only to Komitas and Mansurian
but also to Kashkashian’s unique voice. Over the course of her career
she has created an uncommonly expressive tone – shadowy yet lyrical –
from the most introverted of string instruments. It’s most clearly
evident in her two most recent recordings: `Asturiana,” a 2007
collection of song transcriptions with Robert Levin, and
=80=9CNeharot,” a diverse, darkly beautiful collection of
orchestral and chamber music released earlier this year.
Asked about her tone, Kashkashian is modest to a fault, preferring to
frame her explanation in universal terms.
`The thing that any musician is trying to do is to take the expressive
tool offered them and say something that is, on the one hand, as true
to the composer as possible, and on the other, that expresses the
deepest, innermost regions of their own hearts. It just takes a great
deal of objectivity and an unbelievable amount of vulnerability and
courage to open yourself. And to do those two things together, and to
keep some truth in the affair – it’s not easy. But I think that’s what
all of us are striving for.”

Armenia not concerned by Azerbaijan’s statements – minister

YEREVAN Nov 27

Armenia is not concerned by the belligerent statements made by the
Azeri president, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian said.

"We are not too worried by the belligerent statements of the Azeri
president because they contain more politics, which is due to the
domestic and foreign processes," Ohanian said in an interview with

The combat capability of the Armenian army maintains the balance of
forces with the Azeri army under the quality versus quantity
principle, the Armenian defense minister said.

NKR NA Issues Statement

NKR NA ISSUES STATEMENT

Armenia

The National Assembly of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) issued
a statement on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. The statement
particularly reads: "The recent developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh
peace process are evidence of Azerbaijan’s obviously non-constructive
policy. Applying various propagandas methods, the Azerbaijani
authorities are creating an illusive discontent with the discussions
continuing through international mediation, while the country’s
actual policy is causing a delay for the purpose of changing the
politico-military balance in the region in its favor by unleashing
a war against Artrsakh.

"In this situation the Armenian Parliament regards high-ranking
Azerbaijani officials’ public statements as an unreliable negotiator’s
position, which may undermine Nagorno-Karabakh’s confidence in
a peaceful settlement of the conflict. The NKR authorities have
repeatedly informed international organizations of Azerbaijani
authorities’ aggressive policy, which runs counter to their commitments
to international organizations.

"All this is accompanied by continuing propaganda about alleged tension
on the contact line between the NKR and Azerbaijani armed forces,
which is evidence of Baku’s intention to frustrate the negotiation
process and disturb the regional stability.

"The NKR National Assembly draws the attention of the OSCE
Minsk Group Co-Chairs, Parliament of the mediator states, the
Parliamentary Assemblies of the OSCE and Council of Europe, the CIS
Interparliamentary Assembly to the dangerous tendencies. Azerbaijan’s
consistent steps to distort the essence of the Nagorno-Karabakh
problem and negotiations challenge all the efforts of the international
community to establish peace and stability in the region.

"Considering the above, as well as the Artsakh people’s will, the
NKR National Assembly reserves the right to adequate initiatives.

"The NKR National Assembly proposes that the NKR Ministry of Foreign
Affairs inform the OSCE Ministers’ Council of the statement at the
upcoming meeting in Athens."

"On the conference of the Republican Party of Armenia there will be
made political discussions, issues, that concern both the society and
the political field", – on the meeting with the journalists informed
Galust Sahakyan the head of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)
faction about the RPA conference taking place on November 28.

G. Sahakyan didn’t think surprising the fact that there is so much
interest around the conference in the press and society. According
to him it is connected with fact that the RPA is the biggist party
in the political field and because the president of the party is the
president of the country too.

One of the issues to be discussed on the conference is the issue
of the Nagorno Karabakh issue, Genocide and the Armenian – Turkish
relations. On this occasion the head of the fraction also noted that
the systems that have been worked out by them are becoming stronger,
and complete.

RECONSTRUCTED DEPOT IN YEREVAN WILL OPERATE IN APRIL 2010 – SCR

Nov 27, 2009

YEREVAN, November 27. /ARKA/ . "Reconstructed railway depot of Yerevan
will operate in April 2010", said Sergey Harutyunyan, Chief Engineer
of South-Caucasian Railway.

"We conduct works on strengthening the thermal circuit and are fully
reconstructing locomotive and wagon depot of Yerevan for which we have
already obtained equipment and prepared schedule of works. SCR plans
to launch the reconstructed depot in April 2010", said Harutyunyan
to the journalists of ARKA on Friday.

It is planned to establish wagon-wheel workshops in wagon depot of
Yerevan. Investments of SCR in reconstruction of united depot of
Yerevan will make about 50 million rubles. It is difficult to tell
more accurate figures now", said Harutyunyan.

Similar reconstruction works are conducted in locomotive and wagon
depot of Gyumri where the works of gas supply have been already
started. He said that reconstruction of gas supply and heating are
necessary for quality increase of production.

"One of strategic tasks of SCR is development of railway machinery
construction. These plans can seem ambitious and not real but we
consider that in Armenia it is real", he said.

Currently due to the lack of wagon and locomotive depot, the stock
of SCR is being repaired in Georgia after which they will send it
to Armenia. CJSC "South Caucasian Railway" is 100% affiliate of Open
JSC "Russian Railway". CJSC "Armenian railway" was transferred under

ANKARA: Turkey Solves Armenian Issue: Turkish President

TURKEY SOLVES ARMENIAN ISSUE: TURKISH PRESIDENT

Azerbaijan

Ankara has resolved the Kurdish and Armenian issues, Turkish President
Abdullah Gul said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa,
the Turkish newspaper Yeni Chag reported.

Turkey has resolved the Armenian and Kurdish problem, Gul said.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10.

Turkey and Armenia in talks mediated by Switzerland reached an
agreement to launch "domestic political consultations" Aug. 31 to
sign the Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations and
Protocol on the Development of Bilateral Relations, the Turkish
Foreign Ministry reported.

Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Ankara will never take steps against Azerbaijan’s interests, Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with local
press Oct.10.

The occupied Azerbaijani territories should be liberated.

The day after signing the protocols Davutoglu called the liberation
of the occupied Azerbaijani territories an important condition for
establishing relations with Armenia in an interview with the TRT1
Turkish television station.

According to Gul, Ankara has done everything in its power to improve
relations with Armenia and now expects the same from Yerevan.
