Book Review: A Short, Sharp Assault On The Great War

A SHORT, SHARP ASSAULT ON THE GREAT WAR

The Daily Telegraph, UK

Nigel Jones reviews World War One: A Short History by Norman Stone

Back in the Thatcherite 1980s Professor Norman Stone was the most
fashionable historian of the day: a Niall Ferguson avant la lettre.

Youngish. Handsomeish. Scottish. Right-wing. Iconoclastic. No respecter
of reputations. A familiar figure in TV studios and newspaper columns
as well as Oxford lecture halls. Then, always his own man, he prised
the mud of Oxford from his feet, exchanging it for the dust of Istanbul
where he has taught at two universities ever since.

advertisement Since then we have heard little of him – apart from a
controversy in which Stone refused to condemn his new Turkish homeland
for the 1915 Armenian genocide – an event which he does not admit
actually happened.

Now he is back in Britain, at least in book form, using the genre in
which he is most at home: not a Fergusonian slab of a study marshalling
whole armies of sources and references, but a slim volume – almost
an extended essay, a squib more than a sledgehammer – in which Stone
compresses the whole history of the Great War into fewer than 200
pages, and does it as entertainingly as his old admirers would expect.

Reading it is much like hearing a lecture from the Professor in his
prime – it fizzes with life and sparkles with aphorisms tossed off
with aplomb, along with condemnations and commendations alike – most of
them sensible – delivered with magisterial, even arrogant, authority.

Haig’s staff are ‘creepy young officers who help him on with his
coat’. The ‘son of a peasant’ Petain ‘knew what he was about’.

Ludendorff, by contrast, was ‘really saving his own reputation: he
would encourage others to make an end to the war, then turn round
and say it had not been his fault.’

As might be expected from someone who has already written a brilliant
book on the much-neglected Eastern Front, Stone is especially strong
on theatres apart from the over-familiar Western trenches: especially
Russia and his beloved Turkey, whom he predictably acquits from
responsibility for the Armenian genocide in a couple of lines.

The great iconoclast is no revisionist here, falling in with the
main received truths of modern Great War historiography. Thus the
Germans engineered and started the war; Haig was mulishly stubborn
in refusing to deviate from his full-on offensives, and stupid in
his never-to-be-realised hopes of using his beloved cavalry; and the
Second World War followed inexorably from the failure properly to
occupy Germany after the Armistice and rub their noses in the fact
of their defeat.

In such a short book, which is at once a summary of the war and
Stone’s own take on it, something has to give, and what is missing
is an adequate appreciation of the growing importance of air war and
the war at sea.

The book’s faults are the obverse of its glittering virtues, its
skimpy source notes indicating a slightly slipshod approach to dull
facts. It is, surprisingly in such a short text, repetitious. (We
learn twice that the Sarajevo assassin, Princip, was refreshing
himself in a cafe when his victims happened by; and thrice that the
Russian general staff was called the ‘Stavka’).

Some errors are of the schoolboy howler variety: Hemingway’s novel
about Caporetto was called A Farewell to Arms not Goodbye to Arms
and the explosive used to blow up the Messines ridge was ammonal,
not TNT. If you are going to play the magisterial authority it is
important to get the facts right.

All told though, Stone’s introduction to the war – following in
the distinguished footsteps of Michael Howard, Correlli Barnett and
Hew Strachan, who have all written their own short histories of the
conflict – is thought-provoking, readable and thoroughly enjoyable,
and his conclusion, as Hitler, temporarily blinded by a gas attack,
meditates the next war on the very day that the Great War ended,
is chillingly prophetic. Students of the great slaughter are now
spoiled for choice.

Anjan’s Tale Of Shrinking Anglo-Indian Community

ANJAN’S TALE OF SHRINKING ANGLO-INDIAN COMMUNITY

Hindustan Times, India
Aug 1 2007

India’s shrinking Anglo-Indian community and its members’ changing
lifestyles in Kolkata are the subject of a film shot over the past
year that has just made it for its premier at the International Film
Festival of India (IFFI).

Bow Barracks Forever, a 118-minute English-language film is the "story
of survival of people in Kolkata and particularly of the Anglo-Indian
community", says director Anjan Dutt.

Dutt, who combines roles of actor, singer, musician, songwriter and
filmmaker, has set his film in a century-old building that once served
as the barracks for the US army.

When it left after World War II, the building was handed over to people
connected with the Army, primarily Anglo-Indians as the mixed offspring
of British and Indian stock are referred to in this part of the world.

"This was a community that gave Kolkata its police officers,
its musicians and its hockey players. Over time, the place has
disintegrated and it’s now seen as a dangerous area. It’s half Chinese,
very much Goan and a very strange place," says Dutt.

Dutt says he was motivated by architect Manish Chakrabarty, who was
trying to convert Kolkata’s old buildings into heritage structures,
so that they could not be demolished for new skyscrapers that spell
big money in a bustling city.

"Calcutta Improvement Trust (CIT) has done nothing, and the (state)
government has been ambivalent. It’s a huge red building that reminds
you of Bow Street. It’s a huge place, where a large shopping complex
could come up. Everyone seems waiting for it to collapse," said Dutt.

"All characters are based on real people. They live very violently.

Beat each other up violently. Make love violently. The (140 families)
staying in the area believe that something good will come of the
film," said the director who has directed numerous telefilms for the
ETV Bangali channel.

"Kolkata has never been just a Hindu Bengali city. It is multicultural,
with an Armenian community, the Parsees, Chinese, Anglo Indians,
and the Muslims," Dutt says.

Dutt said that funds apparently sought to be sent to restore Bow
Barracks, from an MP nominated to represent the Anglo-Indian community,
had got caught in the channels and were not used.

During the shooting, which began on Christmas eve 2003, the director
said he faced a problem with the local residents expecting to be paid
more for their participation.

"I think they had a point. They were misinformed about our film,
but to them making a cinema means making a lot of money," said the
director, whose film features in the Indian Panorama section of this
year’s IFFI, currently on here.

Initially the film was to be called Aunty Lobo’s Wine, about the
middle-aged Anglo Indian Emily Lobo, who lives by baking cakes and
brewing red wine.

Dutt, when asked, stressed that attempts had been made to avoid
stereotyping of cultural minorities, as often done by Bollywood.

"Bollywood has done damage. Always, the Nepali comes across as a joker,
the Anglo-Indian is very brutal. It’s only Raj Kapoor whose ‘aunties’
(elderly Christian ladies) are very sweet and nice.

Otherwise it’s only north Indians, specially Punjabis, who seem to
be shown in good light," he said.

Neel Dutt, who happens to be the director’s son and is music director
for this movie, said doing the film was a "very enjoyable process".

This film’s cast includes noted actor Victor Banerjee, Lilette Dubey,
Clayton Rodgers and Neha Dubey.

‘Bow Barracks Forever is a story of survival against all odds, a
story that mirrors the spirit of the old and undying city, Kolkata,"
says the director.

Results Of "Armtech 2007" Congress To Be Summarized In September

RESULTS OF "ARMTECH 2007" CONGRESS TO BE SUMMARIZED IN SEPTEMBER

Noyan Tapan
Jul 31, 2007

YEREVAN, JULY 31, NOYAN TAPAN. The results of the first all-Armenian
high-tech congress "ArmTech 2007" held in San Francisco on July
4-7 will be presented to Armenia’s authorities by the Armenian and
Diasporan organizers of the congress in September, NT correspondent
was informed by Aram Vardanian, Armenian co-chairman of the organizing
committee of "ArmTech 2007", director of Viasphere Technopark.

In his words, more than 60 participants of the event – members of the
Armenian delegation, who presented the investment programs of their
enterprises, also had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with
the work of big local companies. A. Vardanian compared this fact with
the first participation of Japanese car producing firms in US car
shows in the early 1960s, after which Japanese firms started using
the US experience, gradulally entering the international car market.

A. Vardanian said that the 36 investment programs of over 350 congress
participants from 9 countries were related, in particular, to creation
of IT software, organization of development of alternative energy
sources, and modelling of semiconductor devices. Business plans
and proposals of research and applied character were presented as
well. According to A. Vardanian, they anticipate foreign investors’
response to Armenian enterprises’ investment programs on production
of solar power plants and biotechnologies in the near future.

He attached importance to the fact that the Armenia-Diaspora
cooperation is gradually shifting from the humanitarian sphere to
the business sector, particularly, to high-tech business.

Baghdasarov Solds VTB Bank (Armenia) Shares "At Right Moment"

BAGHDASAROV SOLDS VTB BANK (ARMENIA) SHARES "AT RIGHT MOMENT"

ARKA News Agency, Armenia
July 27 2007

YEREVAN, July 27. /ARKA/. The Armenian businessman Mikhail Baghdasarov
thinks that he has sold his share in the Bank VTB (Armenia) "at the
right moment and on good terms".

"The reason for the sale of 30% minus one share that belonged to me
is AMD revaluation and disagreement with the policy implemented by
the Bank VTB (Armenia)," Baghdasarov said.

He believes that the bank did not implement the right policy, but the
new managers laid down the right program. "On our part, we will help
the bank through our accounts at the Bank VTB (Armenia)," he said.

He pointed out that the possibility of sale of the rest 30% was
first agreed on during the sale of 70%, Secondly, "30% of shares
do not influence the bank’s activities." According to Baghdasaryan,
the funds received from the sale of shares will be invested in the
Armavia Airline.

Baghdasarov did not rule out the possibility of his returning to
Armenia’s banking sector. "For the time being, we are not remaining in
the banking sector, which, however, does not mean we cannot return. We
may sell a company and purchase a bank tomorrow," Baghdasarov said.

On July 25, 2007, the Bank VTB purchased the rest 30% minus one
share from the Mika Armenia Trading Ltd owned by Mikhail Baghdasarov,
thereby becoming an exclusive owner of its daughter bank in Armenia –
Bank VTB (Armenia) CJSC.

According to the official balance sheet, by June 30, 2007, the capital
of the Bank VTB (Armenia) had totaled AMD 9.4bln, authorized capital
AMD 7.5bln, total assets AMD 38.2bln, balance profit AMD 1.5bln,
profit AMD 64.7bln (in the 1st half of 2007). At present the bank
has 91 branches.

Orinats Yerkir Downbeat On Single Opposition Candidate

ORINATS YERKIR DOWNBEAT ON SINGLE OPPOSITION CANDIDATE
By Hovannes Shoghikian

Radio Liberty, Czech Rep.
July 24 2007

Armenia’s fragmented opposition will fail to nominate a single
candidate for next year’s presidential election despite its leaders’
stated support for the idea, a top ally of former parliament speaker
Artur Baghdasarian predicted on Tuesday.

The country’s main opposition groups admit that their failure to
join forces was a key reason for their extremely poor showing in
the May 12 parliamentary elections. Their leaders agree that the
opposition will hardly fare better in the 2008 ballot if it fails to
form major electoral alliances. Some are understood to have already
begun discussing possible presidential candidacies.

"We welcome the notion that we must rally around a single candidate
to be able to meet challenges facing our country," said Hovannes
Markarian, a leading member of Baghdasarian’s Orinats Yerkir Party,
one of only two opposition forces represented in parliament.

"But given our experience, we know well that there will hardly be
a unification around one candidate and there will be two or three
[opposition] candidates at best," he said. "This is the lesser evil
which I would like to see."

Observers consider Baghdasarian to be among those opposition leaders
with presidential ambitions who are unlikely to quit the race and
endorse another opposition candidate. Markarian reinforced this
belief by strongly advocating Baghdasarian’s participation in the
presidential election. He said the ambitious ex-speaker possess all
necessary qualities of a prospective head of state.

"Artur Baghdasarian is known not only in our country but also outside
it," Markarian told a news conference.

He would not say whether Orinats Yerkir could endorse a possible
presidential bid by former President Levon Ter-Petrosian.

Ter-Petrosian’s candidacy is backed by several smaller pro-Western
opposition groups. However, the ex-presidential has so far left no
indication that he is ready his nearly decade-long silence and return
to active politics.

Connaissez-Vous Artavazd Pelechian ?

CONNAISSEZ-VOUS ARTAVAZD PELECHIAN ?
par Jean Roy

L’Humanite, France
25 juillet 2007

Cinema .

pastorale a l’epique.
furie. Notre siècle (1982, 50 min) s’attache a Youri Gagarine et a
la conquete spatiale, n’omettant ni les pionniers de l’aviation au
depart de tout, ni le fait que ce qu’on appelle le progrès a aussi
dote l’homme d’outils pouvant etre mis au service de la mort. Il faut
frequenter Artavazd Pelechian.
