REVIVAL OF NATIONAL LOTTERIES
[01:37 pm] 26 January, 2007

In the last few months more and more lotteries are organized in
Armenia. Today one can meet tables full of lottery tickets at every at
every turn. It is mainly due to the appearance of new lotteries and
the revival of the old ones.

According to the sellers, the lottery tickets are in great demand in
Armenia. `Half of the people are unemployed. Whenever they find money,
they buy a ticket hoping that they will win something’, says a
50-year-old seller and confesses that sometimes he buys tickets
too. Pensioners too buy tickets at least once a month. They usually do
it on the day they get their pension.

In any case, lotteries are not a new phenomenon in Armenia. Experience
shows that their activity is temporary. In 2001, for example, the
lotteries were is great demand after which they all gradually faded
away. Today, according to the sellers, instant lottery tickets are
widely used.

UNMATCHED ARTIST OF ARMENIAN SPIRITUAL SONGS KHOREN PALIAN DIES

YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, NOYAN TAPAN. "The Armenian culture suffered
a heavy loss – the unmatched artist of Armenian spiritual songs,
connoisseur of sharakans Khoren Palian passed away. His contribution
was great. He was not only a higly artistic performer of spiritual
songs but also their untiring herald in the world, an apologist for
education of the future generations by this culture and an active
peson." This is said in the Forum of Intellectuals’ press release,
which was submitted to NT.

Being from the famous Palian family – he inherited their high
human characteristics, talent and unbending will to serve his
nation. According to the press release, "everything mean and dark,
the permissiveness which have afflicted the Armenian people over the
last fifteen years were strange to him." K.

Palian never betrayed himself: he lived an exemplary life and and
immortalized his name.

Assistant professor of the Armenian Language History Department of
Yerevan State University, well-known expert of sharakans (Armenian
church psalms), lecturer of grabar (old Armenian language), composer

as a priest by the Catholicos of All Armenians Vazgen I. He held

ANKARA: A "Trabzon Legend" gave the orders to kill Hrant Dink

A "Trabzon Legend" gave the orders to kill Hrant Dink

Hurriyet, Turkey
Jan 22 2007

Yasin Hayal, the man now suspected of giving the orders to 17 year old
Ogun Samast to murder journalist Hrant Dink, had in fact previously
chosen a different candidate for carrying out the act, but had met
with resistance from first young man’s family.

Hayal, who himself had served 10 months in prison for the bombing of a
McDonald’s restaurant in Trabzon, has been known recently for gathering
young Trabzon youth around him and leading them in activities such
as rifle practice. His ultra-nationalist rhetoric focused on what
he perceived as "enemies of the state," and he told the disaffected
youth who spent time with him that it was "their duty" to see to the
punishment of those who "insulted Turkey." Interestingly, it has been
revealed that Yasin Hayal set up a web site, still under construction,
called "Yasin Hayal; Trabzon’s Legend….Is Returning….." The
incomplete web site can still be viewed at

Following the identification of murderer Ogun Samast by his father,
Ahmet Samast, Yasin Hayal and 12 others in Trabzon were arrested,
at which point Hayal reportedly admitted "I gave the gun and the
money to Ogun Samast. I am angry at the things which are happening
in this country. The state is doing nothing to the people who are
against Turkey. Which is why I gave Ogun this job. He carried out
his duty successfully, and he helped rescue Turkey’s honor."

Who Wins with the Murder of Hrant Dink?

WHO WINS WITH THE MURDER OF HRANT DINK?

`The political murder of Hrant Dink will have an
affect of political earthquake in Turkey. Turkey’s
internal and perhaps external policy will be affected.
That murder will divide the Turkish society in term of
recognition of the Armenian genocide,’ Haik Demoyan,
director of the Genocide Institute-Museum, told a
press conference today.

All the intellectuals at Hayeli Club admit that
yesterday’s murder in Turkey was a result of Turkish
policy in the course of dozens of years. `Dink’s
murder was not an attempt by violent young men but
resulted from the policy of Turkey since its
inception,’ Azat Yeghiazaryan, director of National
Institute of Literature, said, also saying Dink’s
murder was part of a chain which started in Budapest
by a murder of an Armenian officer by an Azeri.

Ashot Melkumyan, director of National Institute of
History, is sure that this is a terrorist act
sponsored by Turkish state.

Demoyan is sure Turkey will make a political show out
of this murder trying to convince the international
community that she cares for democracy and freedom of
speech. He referred to Turkish prime minister’s
condemnation of the fact of murder and his assurance
that murderers will be punished.

Asked who wins with the murder of the Turkish-Armenian
publicist, Demoyan and Avagyan said it must be
connected with the internal political situation in
Turkey and the fact that elections are expected in
that country soon.

LA Armenians saddened, not surprised over editor Hrant Dink Shooting

L.A. Armenians saddened but not surprised over editor Hrant Dink’s
shooting

Vigils begin and tributes are planned to honor a ‘witness to the
truth.’

By Greg Krikorian, Times Staff Writer
January 20, 2007

Until two years ago, the eloquent editor of Turkey’s only Armenian
language newspaper was barely known to many in Los Angeles’ vast
Armenian American community.

But when Turkey charged that Hrant Dink’s uncompromising stories had
insulted that nation’s identity, the iconoclastic resident of
Istanbul quickly gained notice.

So his assassination Friday stunned and saddened those who had known
him for years and many who had only recently learned his name.

"It is shocking but not surprising," said Raffi Hamparian of the
Armenian National Committee of America, the nation’s largest Armenian
American political organization. "We are paying the results of a
tragic policy on the part of Turkey to deny its past and, perhaps
most tragically, the complicity of the U.S. in this denial."

For decades, Armenian Americans have urged the U.S. government to
pressure Turkey to acknowledge what historians have long called the
first genocide of the 20th century – the killing of 1.5 million
Armenians in Turkey beginning in 1915.

More recently, Turkey’s insistence that no such genocide took place
has drawn fire as it seeks acceptance into the European Union.

"I am devastated," said Frank Zerunyan, a Los Angeles attorney and
chairman of the Armenian Bar Assn. "As a lawyer I always respected
his views about freedom of speech. He never discriminated."

Calling Dink’s slaying "horrifying," Archbishop Hovnan Derderian of
the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church added, "What happened in
Istanbul reawakens in the hearts and souls of our community what
happened in the genocide."

Just last October, the archbishop recalled, Dink was in Los Angeles
and spoke to a gathering of more than 500 Armenian Americans, many of
whom asked him whether he was afraid that his outspoken comments in
Turkey might one day cost him his life.

"He said he was not afraid," Derderian recalled. "He said that after
we have lost 1.5 million for our faith, he was not afraid to be a
witness to the truth."

As church vigils began Friday and tributes were scheduled through the
weekend, many Armenian Americans like Harry Kasbarian seemed stunned
by the assassination.

At his Glendale tire store, Kasbarian said he, his family and friends
were downhearted. At the same time, he said, Dink’s willingness to
ignore danger would long be remembered.

"When any voice is silenced, there will be thousands of new voices
that will come up around the world," he said. "He is going to be
considered a martyr."

KARABAKH: NKR PARLIAMENTARIAN

Stepanakert, January 18. ArmInfo. "Azerbaijan will keep on negotiating
until Baku-Tbilisi-Jeikhan oil line works. Aliyev’s statements are
aimed at calming his own people. The businessmen, who invested great
amounts in this project, require stability in the region, NKR
parliamentarian, a member of "Free Motherland" party, Artur Tovmasyan,
told the journalists, ArmInfo special correspondent in Stepanakert
reports.

He noted that a "great economic potential does not mean that the
problems should be solved by force". "There are many examples for
this: not economically strong sides had won in the war of USSR in
Afghanistan, in the war of the USA in Vietnam , etc", the deputy
said. In his opinion, no serious progresses are expected in 2007
negotiation process.

SYLVESTER STALLONE has sparked controversy by plotting to direct a
film adaptation of controversial book THE FORTY DAYS OF MUSA DAGH,
which describes the alleged Turkish massacre of its Armenian community
in 1915. The book by Austrian author FRANZ WERFEL is controversial in
Turkey, where the claimed genocide has never been wholly accepted
as a historical fact. And the Association On Struggle Against
Armenian Genocide Acknowledgement is urging Stallone not to make
the film. Chairman SAVAS EGILMEZ fumes, "The book is full of lies,
since the author got his information from nationalist and radical
Armenians. We have already sent necessary documents about the mentioned
days to the producer of the film. Our allies will urge the producer
not to produce the film."

Stallone says the film would be "an epic about the complete destruction
of a civilisation. (But) talk about a political hot potato. The Turks
have been killing that subject for 85 years."

PACE RAPPORTEUR EDWARD O’HARA: "ERECTION OF MONUMENT SYMBOLIZING SHUSHA’S INVASION IS NOT RIGHT"

Today, Azerbaijan
Jan 17 2007

"Erection of monument symbolizing Shusha’s invasion is not right,"
said PACE Rapporteur on monitoring of cultural monuments in the South
Caucasus, British MP Edward O’Hara.

Noting that the mission on culture will soon be over, O’Hara told
the APA he was against the politicization of the issue of erection
of the monument symbolizing Shusha’s invasion.

"Anyway, I will deal with the issue. The members of the monitoring
group will be informed about it. I will investigate the issue on
erection of this monument during our visit to Yerevan," he said.

Edward O’Hara said that the mission on monitoring of cultural monuments
in the South Caucasus will visit the region in spring.

"We could not visit the region in autumn because of weather. Besides,
the members of the mission could not reach agreement on some issues.

The mission will appreciate the situation of cultural and historical
monuments in Nagorno Karabakh, Nakhchivan and Armenia," he said.

Yerevan Mayor’s Office made a decision on erecting a monument devoted
to Shusha’s invasion in the center of the city.
