TURKEY’S POTENTIAL DIRECTED AT DENTING THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE HAS DIED OUT

ArmRadio – Public Radio, Armenia
Oct 5 2007

There is great possibility that the US House of Representatives will
adopt the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H. Res. 106), political
commentator of Azg daily Hakob Chakryan told a press conference
dedicated to the consideration of the above-mentioned resolution in
the Congress on October 10. At the same time he expressed confidence
that the Senate will oppose the document on the Armenian Genocide.

According to Hakob Chakryan, Turkey’s potential directed at denting
the Armenian Genocide has died out, and this fact finds reflections
in the speeches of many Turkish officials. Thus, Turkey’s current
President, ex-Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul noted in one of his
speeches that the genocide question must be included in the list
of most important issues of Turkey within coming 10 years. Indeed,
the genocide issue is an obstacle for developing normal relations
between Turley and third countries.

Hakob Chakryan noted also that criticizing the US policy on recognition
of the Armenian Genocide, Armenians must always remember that the US
is the only country, the President of which addresses the Armenian
community on April 24 every year.

Director of the Ararat strategic research centre Armen Ayvazyan
mentioned that unlike many other documents on recognition of the
Armenian Genocide, H. Res. 106 embraces all important points related
to the whole period of genocide perpetration from 1915 to 1923. It’s
noted in the document that the genocide was carried out ion the
historic land of Armenians and not the Ottoman Empire, which is also
a positive point for Armenians.

Turkish Suspect In Dink Trial Says Ordered To Kill

TURKISH SUSPECT IN DINK TRIAL SAYS ORDERED TO KILL
By Mustafa Yukselbaba

Reuters, UK
Oct 1 2007

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – The chief suspect in the murder of
Turkish-Armenian editor Hrant Dink told a court he was forced to
carry out the killing, lawyers said on Monday, in a case seen as an
important test for Ankara’s EU membership bid.

Hundreds of protesters, fearing a state coverup, demonstrated outside
the second hearing of the case at the Istanbul courthouse with banners
proclaiming: "We are all witnesses. We demand justice."

The European Union opened membership talks with Turkey in 2005 and
sees the Dink case as a test for a judicial system often accused of
conservative bias.

Police imposed heavy security outside the court house where 19 suspects
were being tried over the killing of Dink, gunned down outside his
Istanbul office in January by a 17-year-old who has confessed to
the killing.

The hearing was closed to the media but lawyers representing Dink
quoted the 17-year-old suspect as saying in his testimony he was
ordered to carry out the killing by a second suspect. He also said
he took ecstasy and hashish on the day of the killing.

The lawyer for the second suspect denied his client had given such
an order.

A committee of Dink’s supporters, set up to monitor the trial, said
in a statement: "This court’s verdict will be decisive in showing
whether real justice can still be implemented in Turkey."

Dink’s lawyers have complained that the murder has not been properly
investigated and have expressed fears for the independence of the
court, reflecting concerns about the possible involvement of Turkey’s
so-called "deep state".

The "deep state" is a term used to describe hardline nationalists in
the bureaucracy and security forces who are prepared to subvert the
law for their own political ends.

POLICE CONVERSATION PROBED

At the weekend, Turkey’s liberal Radikal newspaper published the
transcript of a conversation between one of the suspects and a police
officer two hours after the shooting which it said showed the officer
was aware of a plan to kill Dink.

The Interior Ministry has launched a probe into the telephone
conversation.

Dink had angered Turkish nationalists with his comments on the
massacres of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey during World War One. More
than 100,000 people turned out at his funeral to show solidarity and
protest against violent nationalism.

Media reports have said one of the suspects had repeatedly tipped
off police about a plot to kill Dink and that these warnings had been
conveyed to the Istanbul police headquarters.

Several officials, including the head of police intelligence in
Istanbul, have been sacked or reassigned to other jobs over their
handling of the Dink case.

Ankara denies Armenian claims, backed by many historians and a
growing number of foreign parliaments, that the killings amounted to
genocide. It says large numbers of both Muslim Turks and Christian
Armenians died in ethnic fighting as the Ottoman Empire collapsed
during World War One.

‘ArmenTel’ CJSC Lost All Kinds Of Monopolies For Telecommunications

‘ARMENTEL’ CJSC LOST ALL KINDS OF MONOPOLIES FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN ARMENIA STARTED OCTOBER 1, 2007

ArmInfo News Agency, Armenia
Oct 1 2007

ArmInfo. According to the decision of RA Public Services Commission,
the "ArmenTel" CJSC (subsidiary enterprise of "VympelCom" OJSC)
has lost all kinds of monopolies for telecommunication services in
Armenia started October 1, the Commission told ArmInfo today.

According to the source data, he Commission’s decision on introduction
of the relevant changes to the Company’s license No 60 was approved
on August 24, 2007, and it takes affect from today. It means that the
telecommunications market in the republic is completely liberalized
from now on. The monopoly was given to the "ArmenTel" at the end, 1997,
till 2013. In particular, the "ArmenTel" refuses from monopoly on the
main and minor telecommunication and telephone services it possessed,
including the local, intercity and international telecommunication
and telephone services, services for lease of the telephone lines,
the international transit and satellite services, the public mobile
communication, the voice data transfer via Internet (IP-telephony),
video transmission services (broadband).

Director General of "ArmenTel" CJSC Oleg Blizniuk told journalists
earlier that the Company refuses of the monopoly voluntarily and
welcomes a healthy competition. However, he added, it is important
for the market to become not only free but civilized. He said that
a new era starts in Armenia in the area of telecommunications.

Meanwhile, he added, started October 1, the "ArmenTel" becomes an
absolutely commercial company, free of many social liabilities. So,
any projects related to investments, will be considered from the
viewpoint of the capital payoff, first of all.

"ArmenTel" CJSC and the Armenian government, a new cell operator may
appear in Armenia only beginning from January 1, 2009.

MTS Russian cell operator, are functioning in the Armenian market of
cell communication at present.

WHERE WAS DISCIPLINARY COMMISSION WHEN DESTINIES OF 20 CASES WERE BEING DECIDED?

"If the verdict of "Royal Armenia" was absent among the examined
cases regarding Pargev Ohanyan’s activities, then it is absolutely
legal", said Armen Ashotyan, lawyer who represented the case of
"Royal Armenia". "Where were the members of the Justice Board and the
Disciplinary Commission when destinies of 20 cases have been decided",
wondered Mr Sargsyan and noticed that the proceeding was commenced
by Ohanyan himself after he took up the case of "Royal Armenia".

Why that case was not involved in the 20 cases which were observed
with harsh violations, Ashot Sargsyan commented: "There could be only
two reasons, first that case was not involved in the 20 cases, not to
make vivid that the persecution was connected with "Royal Armenia"
or the Disciplinary Commission examined the case and concluded that
Pargev Ohanyan made an unbiased and legal decision".

The fact that the verdicts of 16 cases among 20 were not appealed
either by the prosecutor’s office or by defendants, served ground
for Ashot Sargsyan to suppose that Pargev Ohanyan made fair decisions.

NEW HOTEL WITH 124 BEDS OPENS IN YEREVAN WITH PARTICIPATION OF ARMENIAN PRESIDENT

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, NOYAN TAPAN. The Armenia Royal Palace Hotel
opened on September 28 with the participation of the Armenian president
Robert Kocharian. The hotel offers 59 rooms with 124 beds in it. It
belongs to Azat Safarian’s family business.

According to the RA minister of trade and economic development Nerses
Yeritsian, the hotel’s owner submitted a bid for receiving a 4-star
category to the ministry’s commission on hotel qualification.

In his words, demand for hotel rooms is still great in Armenia,
particularly in Yerevan. He said that by late 2007, the new concept
of tourism development will be prepared. It will envisage the annual
number of tourists that Armenia can receive in five years. In the
minister’s opinion, it is realistic for this index to make one million
tourists. He noted that the achievement of this goal will take much
effort of state and private sector in the marketing sector.

The head of the tourism development department of the RA ministry of
trade and economic development Mekhak Apresian said that there are
about 70 hotels with nearly 15 thousand beds in Armenia. According to
official statistics, 181,239 tourists visited Armenia in the first
half of 2007 against 132,937 in the same period of 2006. The number
of tourists in 2006 made 381,136 against 318,563 in 2007.

Hybrid Foods Are As Useless As Cloned Cats

HYBRID FOODS ARE AS USELESS AS CLONED CATS
By Bruce D. Callander

Cheboygan Daily Tribune , MI

Sept 27 2007

I’ve never seen the need for apricots. They may have some purpose in
the world but it is not apparent.

The point is that the apricot is a nasty tasting peach and, if you
want a proper peach, you should eat one.

Of course the Internet says something else. It claims that the apricot
is from the same subgenus as the plum and that there have been crosses
made between the two known as plum cots. I am not heavily into plums
myself, although I have eaten some. Why anybody would want to mix
one up with an apricot, I can’t imagine.

One source says that the apricot originated in northern China near
the Russian border. Another talks about Armenia as the source,
apparently because the scientific name is Prunus armeniaca. The
consensus seems to be that it started in China around 3,000 years
ago, moved to Armenia and spread slowly across Europe. It came to
the United States via the English on the East Coast and the Spanish
on the West. They now are grown almost exclusively in California,
which should tell you something about the apricot.

I was induced to eat an apricot when I was quite young. My mother
told me it tasted like chicken, which is what they tell you about
everything that tastes awful. An apricot tastes nothing like chicken
and very little like a peach despite it’s appearance. It tastes a
little like a raw beet, only more tart.

The kumquat has an almost identical history. It started in China a
little later than the apricot, spread to Europe and wound up in the
United States, being grown mainly in California

Here, however, the history of the kumquat seems to differ from
that of the apricot. The Internet says that it is grown "mainly
as ornamental dooryard trees and as potted specimens in patios and
greenhouses." Apparently, most people have the good sense not to eat
kumquats even though they look like cute little oranges. They do not
taste like oranges. In fact, they taste more like apricots.

One bit of fruit that comes closer to be edible is the tangelo.

Presumably, it is a cross between and orange and a tangerine, both of
which I like. But I presumed wrong. The tangelo is a mix grapefruit
my sources say. That puts a whole different light on the thing.

One can eat a tangerine or an orange and never go near a tangelo. In
fact, now that I know that the other half is a grapefruit, I don’t
think you could induce me to eat one. I have eaten grapefruits in
the days when I was allowed unlimited sugar and convinced myself that
they were tasty. I do not see how I could be trapped into eating one
now naked and without sweetening.

Grapefruits are far more sour than they need be and much too big to
be eaten all at once. A good orange is the simple solution to both
objections. Better yet, the tangerine is even more compact, just as
tasty and comes in convenient pieces that are easier to eat. This
leaves little reason for eating an orange and none at all for eating
a grapefruit.

If you are looking for a fruit that has even less use, however,
consider the avocado. It looks like a pear, but has none of the pear’s
redeeming qualities. An avocado by itself has almost no taste.

It has the texture of a sweet potato, but none of the flavor. It is
a little like eating library paste.

The only way an avocado is at all flavorful is if it is filled with
something tasty. Cottage cheese is not enough. It needs something
like shrimp with lots of red sauce. When you have filled up the
avocado with enough shrimp and red sauce to make it palatable, you
still have to drink something to give it some real taste. By then,
it should occur to you that you don’t really need the avocado. It
is just an expensive container for the seafood. Nor is it really big
enough to hold a proper serving of shrimp and red sauce. It might be
better mixed with peanut butter for sandwiches.

Olympic Dream For Darfur: A Symbolic Olympic-Style Torch Relay At Ts

OLYMPIC DREAM FOR DARFUR: A SYMBOLIC OLYMPIC-STYLE TORCH RELAY AT TSITSERNAKAPERT

Public Radio of Armenia. ArmRadio
Sept 25 2007

In an effort to end the genocide currently unfolding in Darfur, the
Armenian Assembly of America, in collaboration with "Olympic Dream
for Darfur," organized a symbolic Olympic-style torch relay at the
Tsitsernakapert Genocide Memorial in Armenia today.

Armenia is the third stop on an international symbolic Olympic Torch
Relay that began on August 9 near the Darfur border exactly one year
before the summer Olympics to call attention to the constructive role
that China could play in the Darfur crisis. On August 15, the torch
was lit in Kigali, Rwanda, at a site where thousands of Tutsis were
killed after UN forces withdrew.

The torch was lit from the eternal flame and passed among survivors
of genocide and other Darfur advocates. Special guests in attendance
included survivors of the Armenian Genocide, Rwandan Genocide and
Darfur Genocide as well as His Holiness Garegin II, Catholicos of
All Armenians, and the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

"The international community must join together to ensure that the
world does not look away, yet again, when mass killing is taking
place," said Archbishop Williams. "We honor victims and survivors of
previous genocides and must listen to their plea to make the words
‘never again,’ a reality, both for the people of Darfur and for
the future."

After Armenia, the torch will travel to various countries, including
the US where on October 7 a ceremony will take place at Holy Trinity
Armenian Apostolic Church in Cambridge, Mass. featuring his His
Holiness Garegin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians,
and Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, Legate of the Diocese of the Armenian
Apostolic Church of America (Eastern) and president of the National
Council of Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC). Torches from around
the state will then converge at the Government Center in Boston for
a culminating torch-lighting ceremony.

"The Assembly will continue to raise international awareness of the
Armenian Genocide and all modern genocides, including the ongoing
crimes in Darfur" said Assembly Board of Trustees Public Affairs Chair
Anthony Barsamian. "The Assembly is proud of its role in helping to
end the cycle of genocide and we encourage members of the Armenian
community, as well as human rights supporters, to attend next month’s
symbolic torch lighting ceremony in Massachusetts."

Dream for Darfur’s Olympic Torch Relay seeks to use the Olympic ideals
of peace and international cooperation to raise awareness about Darfur
and as a step toward building an international anti-genocide movement
for the future.
