My Own Private Island

MY OWN PRIVATE ISLAND

All I had to do was ask and Swishwash was mine. The NCC let me be
its keeper, and I’ve got a cap to prove it

.I’m 70 years old, happily married, partially retired from orthopedic
surgery and I have my own island.

The island actually belongs to the Nature Conservancy of Canada,
but they are kind enough to let me look after it for them, what you
might call the "island keeper" (they call it a steward). NCC even
provided me with a baseball cap with their logo.

My (our) island is named Swishwash and, although completely wild, it
is located in the middle arm of the Fraser River only 15 kilometres
from downtown Vancouver, 300 metres from Richmond, B.C., and one
kilometre from the south runway of Vancouver International Airport.

In 1895, a salmon cannery was built on pilings on the island, which
was mostly sandbar and marsh. The cannery soon became economically
nonviable and was purchased and consolidated into British Columbia
Packers Ltd. The buildings burned down but the pilings remain
protruding above the water, except at high tide, where they lurk
awaiting my kayak.

In the 1950s, when the Fraser River was dredged to facilitate
oceangoing traffic, the dredgings were piled upon the sandbar, putting
it 3 to 4 metres above the highest tides. In 1999, B.C. Packers
donated the island to the NCC.

I had kayaked and windsurfed around Swishwash for several years when
I learned it had been given to the NCC. I enquired if they needed a
caretaker and they kindly allowed me to be its steward.

Swishwash’s 29 hectares are divided into eastern, central and western
portions by tidal flooding of lowlands. The island and its surrounding
estuary are home to a wide diversity of waterfowl, including some
50,000 snow geese that spend the winter or migrate through on their
way from Alaska and Russia to points south. A family of bald eagles
spends the winter hunting from a tall cottonwood tree. The reedy tidal
waters are also temporary home to millions of juvenile salmon migrating
down the Fraser, where they spend months acclimating to the salt water.

Mammalian life includes a group of 100 or so harbour seals, a family
of river otters, several coyotes, an occasional raccoon and one
lone beaver who, as near as I can determine, made a brief visit,
found insufficient trees to his liking and departed.

My main duty is to try to control the non-native or invasive species
of plants growing on the island and plant native trees, mostly Sitka
spruce, western red cedar, Douglas fir and cottonwood. Controlling
non-native species sounded like a fairly straightforward task until
some modest effort brought me face to face with the two most prolific
and pervasive plants nature has yet devised: Scotch broom and Himalayan
blackberry.

For starters both are travelling with forged passports. Scotch broom
actually originated from around the Mediterranean Sea and Himalayan
blackberry from Armenia. The story of the transport of broom to North
America is somewhat controversial. The principal culprit seems to be
an Englishman who brought it from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest to
decorate his garden with its abundant bright yellow flowers.

The blackberry’s journey is a bit more obscure. It was introduced to
Europe in 1835 and North America in 1885 because of its sweet black
fruit. Unfortunately, when turned loose on poor, unsuspecting North
America, its survival and proliferating skills were too much for the
fertile soil and abundant rainfall, especially on the west coast,
and they can now be found on most patches of untended ground in
Southwest B.C., including "my" island.

One broom plant can produce 50,000 seeds per year, which are ejected
3 metres when the pod "pops" and hide in the soil for up to 60 years
(waiting for me to die) before germination. Blackberries can reproduce
three ways: by seeds within their delicious berries, which make great
wine; by growing rhizomes beneath the ground which, when dug up,
resemble a plant from a horror movie; or by stalks or canes that are
covered with sharp barbs and bend over so the tip embeds itself in
the earth to start a new plant. You can see I have my post-retirement
work planned for the next 50 years. I’m currently training my son
and granddaughter to the task.

The job is, for me, pure pleasure. I load my kayak, paddle, life jacket
and hoe, drive to the south side of the airport and park next to the
Coast Guard station. They keep their eye on the island and shoo off
any visitors. The first several times I went they tried to kick me
off until NCC provided me with my jaunty cap to verify my status as
official caretaker.

With the hoe (sometimes shovel or rake) loaded in the kayak, I paddle
the 200 metres to the island, taking care to avoid the float planes
taking off from the airport’s south terminal as they buzz overhead
on their way to Victoria or up the B.C. coast. I often wave to them
and wonder if they wonder, "What is that old geezer doing wandering
around on that bushy sandbar?" And, when I arrive home three hours
later, my wife asks the same question.

I am not White, Black, Asian or Hispanic

SARAH ALAOUI

Is this going to be one of those cliché articles discussing the
multiracial citizen’s struggle to check a race box? Well, not
exactly. It’s not about a mixed citizen, and it’s not really cliché
because it becomes relevant again every ten years when we have to fill
out the U.S. Census, and roughly every four years when applying to
schools, and every time one fills out a job application, or a survey
(but remember, it’s just for "statistical purposes"…please.) or
pretty much for almost every single piece of paperwork we have to fill
out. Cliché? I think not.
Before I begin my writing rampage, firing my missiles of information
and experiences at you regarding the futility of the current race box
system, I want to provide you with some background facts.
I come from a Moroccan family and throughout my life, I’ve had trouble
checking the boxes to indicate my "race". In elementary school, I
think I checked the "white" box which is interesting to me now–I
think it was because at that point in my life, I thought Moroccans
were the only types of people in the world and I fit into the category
of lighter skinned Moroccans (I’d spent some years living in Morocco
as a child and the environment there is not as heterogenous as
California). As a 6-year-old when I met my father’s Egyptian friend,
the first thing I said to him was, "Hey, you speak like they do on
TV!," referring to the Egyptian soap operas that are always playing on
the dish. I’m glad to say I’ve come a long way from elementary school
and my world has broadened to include people of all kinds of races,
faiths, and ethnicities–I now am fully aware that those actors on TV
also exist in real life!
As I grew older and became aware of social structure and society in
the United States, I began to realize that yes, although I am light
skinned for being Moroccan, there’s a whole world of people that are
much lighter than me, and they are the true "whites". That’s also when
I learned that Italians, Greeks, Armenians and even Persians are
considered white. Just when I was starting to feel comfortable that
others shared my olive skin and feel I could relate to them (there
aren’t very many Moroccans my age where I live), they were whisked
away by a category that indicated a whole different world I could
never relate to.
Because "white" does not only embody a color. What the term "white"
means in the United States today is something that transcends any skin
color. White means the suburbs and white means affluence and white
means picket fences. Some people may argue then, that I do fit into
the white category based on my definition of the term. But white also
means no questions asked ever, no extra security checks at the airport
or in that same category, no mispronunciations of my last name or
being told it’s a "cool" name as a precursor for the question of where
I’m from. Being white means being untouchable in this country.
In middle school, high school, and now in college, I’ve started
alternating between the "African/Black" box and the "Other"
box. During the cutthroat period of college applications, my friends
would ask, "Hey Sarah, can’t you apply as African-American? SO
unfair." I’m sorry, but I don’t want to get accepted into college and
be tossed into the gossip conversations of "well, she just got in
because she’s African-American…well, technically, she is". There was
one university application–the name doesn’t come to mind, right
now–but they had a box for "White/North African". That one made me
especially mad. Those are two completely different worlds, because as
far as I’m concerned, in places like Europe, for example, "White" and
"North African" represent completely different worlds. "Other", it
was, for college applications at least. Sometimes, there’s a "Middle
Eastern" box, but I don’t check that either. I don’t consider myself
Middle Eastern, I consider myself Arab. That’s a!
whole other conversation, however. The last job I applied for, I
checked off "African" crossing my fingers that my black manager
wouldn’t comment on it. Awkward. Also, I can’t forget the comments
from black peers, "You’re African? Nawww, no way!". YES WAY, I’m Arab,
I’m African, I’m not white, I’m not black. Here we go again…
Let’s cut straight to the point. That $300 billion that will be
redistributed to local and state governments and communities should
reflect the accurate amount of Arabs in the United States. Arabs,
please crawl out of your "white" and "other" boxes now, and make sure
our numbers are reflected accordingly in the 2010 census. Let’s get
our own box.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Protest rally scheduled by Armenian National Congress
(ANC) did not take place today since only 10-15 people came to the
rally. PanARMENIAN.Net reporter couldn’t get explanations from the
ANC representatives.

Today the Armenian National Congress announced the restart of the
Friday marches and protests. In particular, ANC issued a statement,
which reads: "While Nicol Pashinyan is in custody, we will do
everything to make his presence felt, and every word uttered reach
all citizens without exception".

The statement also says that young people begin series of Friday
marches and actions initiated by Nikol Pashinyan. "We are aware that
salvation of Armenia depends on a man, and this one is everyone,
we do not yield to any force. Our victory is inevitable. And then 1
+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 + … ", – said the ANC statement.

During the last opposition rally on June 12, the first president of
Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan said that the next protest rally will be
held on September 18. He did not rule out that in case of necessity
intermediate rallies can be arranged.

On July 1 one of the most active participants of the March 1, 2008
events, chief editor of "Haykakan Zhamanak" Nikol Pashinyan, being
sought, surrendered to law enforcement authorities. He was arrested
and taken to the Criminal executive agency of the "Yerevan-Kentron"
community.

In February-March of 2008, the Armenian opposition, dissatisfied with
the results of presidential elections of February 19, 2008, headed by
the first Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan organized rallies in
center of Yerevan. Protests degenerated into riots, killing ten people.

Haste In The Peace Process Will Have Negative Outcome

HASTE IN THE PEACE PROCESS WILL HAVE NEGATIVE OUTCOME

Au g 13th, 2009

STEPANAKERT-The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Marcel Petrosyan Thursday responded to inquiries about
recent statements made by the US Co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group
Matthew Bryza. Below is the translated text of the press conference.

Question: How would you comment on the OSCE Minsk Group U.S. Co-chair’s
statement that the position of the Nagorno-Karabakh "population"
is reflected in the negotiation process?

Marcel Petrosyan: We would welcome this fact and, in this regard,
we would like to remind the mediators that the people of the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic have expressed their will at the
referendum on independence on December 10, 1991 as well as the
Constitution referendum on December 10, 2006. We would be grateful
to the mediators if the will of the people of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic, as expressed at the referenda, would be fully reflected in
the negotiation process.

Question: How would you comment on the OSCE MG U.S. Co-chair’s
recent statements, where Bryza presented the details of the proposed
principles for the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict settlement? Matthew
Bryza also said that a quick settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, to his opinion, was advantageous to Armenia, because
otherwise the economic development of the republic would be
complicated, which would in turn create problems in carrying out
democratic reforms.

M.P.: First, I would like to stress that a quick resolution to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a priority for the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic as well. However, this does not mean that we favor a
settlement at any cost, and with unpredictable consequences at
that. For us a resolution is the establishment of lasting and enduring
peace, which is possible to achieve only in view of the actual state of
affairs. However, Mr. Bryza links the issue of the conflict resolution
to economic development and democratic reforms. The correlation into
a single "package"is an attempt to impose an agreement at all costs.

Unfortunately, recently there has been a tendency to speed up the
negotiations for resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on a
formula that ignores both the essence and history of the conflict and
the existing realities. And Mr. Bryza’s statements, from our point
of view, are in line with this apparoach. There is an impression
that the current haste has to do with the announced change of some
of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs, and particularly Mr. Bryza. As
we have already said in a July 15, 2009 statement, an unreasonable
speeding up of the negotiation process will have a negative outcome
and will lead only to escalation of tension, as the formula proposed
by the mediators is directed toward changing the balance of powers
underlying peace and stability in the region.

Question: According to Bryza, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs propose
that peacekeepers in the Azeri-Karabakh conflict zone be unarmed,
perform monitoring functions and not be able to use force. This,
as the U.S. Co-chair said, is conditioned by the fact that the
experience from Kosovo and Bosnia show that peacekeepers are not
capable of preventing an armed conflict, if one of the parties does
not want it. Please comment.

M.P.: By saying this Bryza admits that one of the main principles
proposed by the mediators, namely the security of the Nagorno-Karabakh
people, cannot be accomplished, and that the international community
cannot fully guarantee the security of Karabakh people in case of
implementation of the proposed settlement formula, as peacekeepers
are one of the main elements of controlling parties to a conflict
that the international community has in its arsenal of maintaining
peace in conflict regions. But once tested, it appears that they are
not so effective, if one of the parties does not want peace.

However, the OSCE Minsk Group U.S. Co-chair proposes to solve this
issue in the process of the Azeri-Karabakh conflict resolution by
appeasing the aggressor, Azerbaijan. History has shown that such a
policy does not contribute in any way to establishing peace. On the
contrary, it leads to escalation of tension and war.

The Azerbaijanis Of Karabakh Are Presented As Betrayers

THE AZERBAIJANIS OF KARABAKH ARE PRESENTED AS BETRAYERS

Aysor.am

Sergey Shaqaryants, the expert of political investigations institute,
in the conversation with Aysor.am journalist touched upon the Madrid
principles. The speaker mentioned that till now it is not clear which
7 regions are being discussed around the talks table and whether they
speak only about the 7 regions around the NKR which make the security
belt for the Republic or there are also other regions.

"With a very superficial accounting it turns out that Azerbaijan has
pretentions for Shushi region too", – said the political scientist.

According to the speaker if the question is observed from the point
of view of revealing the 76 to 23 ethnic correlation it will mean
the return of Azerbaijani to Shushi.

"I don’t see return of any Azerbaijani without force institutions
or police, and that means returning Shushi region to Azerbaijan", –
pointed the political scientist.

S. Shaqaryants thinks that the Madrid principles that are "renewed"
in Krakow will stay secret for a long time. He also said that it is
possible to discuss the demands of Azerbaijan around the negotiations
table as the discussions over the demands of the Armenian side are
delayed.

"If the settlement principles are being renewed by the wish of
Azerbaijan, so Armenia and Karabakh have to refuse it strictly. No
previous interethnic correlation", – he said and mentioned that the
Azeri of NKR in 1991 boycotted and didn’t take part in the referendum.

"The Azeri of Nagorno Karabakh are presented as a fighting side,
as betrayers. They have betrayed their country, and the betrayers,
as we know, by the rules of war are treated strictly. But they have
not been shot or send to a "concentration camp", they have been send
to their Azerbaijani compatriots. There is no return any more", –
said S. Shaqaryants and added that the Armenian side should express
itself more strictly about the return of the Azeri to NKR region.

Lukashenka Ready To Send Belarusians To Die For Putin And Medvedev

LUKASHENKA READY TO SEND BELARUSIANS TO DIE FOR PUTIN AND MEDVEDEV

Charter 97
12 August 2009, Wed

Politics

In return, the Belarusian leader asks to let him enter the Russian
market and not to sell energy resources at unreasonable prices.

Belarus would approach the issue of signing the agreement on creation
of the Collective Operational Reaction Forces (CORF) in the framework
of the CSTO from the point of view of its expediency for the country,
Alyaksandr Lukashenka said, visiting Nyasvizh district on August 11,
Interfax informs.

"As for signing the documents, we will certainly sign them if it
would be beneficial," Lukashenka underlined, underscoring that "it
is our right".

At the same time, he underlined that "there is nothing bad in
them", emphasizing that the document on creation of the CORF is a
framework agreement. He explained that it envisages that "we would
have military units, which could be sent into this or that spot,
after a common decision, but if I would be against, nobody would send
them (Belarusian units) anywhere; if Russia would be against, their
troops won’t be sent anywhere either". "It is a framework decision,
and it does absolutely no harm to our state," Lukashenka underlined.

He has also added that Belarus is not going to demonstrate any kind
of unsportsmanlike attitude towards its allies in the CSTO. "We have
a normal position in the CSTO," A. Lukashenka underlined.

"Everybody understands that there is no CSTO without Belarus, and
it’s impossible in the future, so there are worries that Belarus has
departed from this policy," A. Lukashenka continued.

However, Lukashenka underlined that "we do not want to have an
argument with anybody, we want to be at peace both with the East and
the West". "The fact that I didn’t come to the CSTO summit in Moscow,
does not mean we are against integration processes, including the
ones in the military and political sphere," A. Lukashenka underlined.

He also refuted the reports of Russian mass media that at the informal
CSTO summit in Kyrgyzstan pressure was exerted no Belarus for it
to sign the CORF agreement and take the seat of the CSTO presiding
country. "There was no blackmailing and pressure," Lukashenka stated
and added that he was asked about plans of Belarus on these topics. As
said by Lukashenka, he answered that as the leader of the state he
is the right to take decisions.

Yet, the Belarusian leader added that at the informal summit he asked
his colleagues a counter-question: "Tell me what should I defend
in your countries and what my guys should die for? For Russia’s
not allowing Belarus entering its market? Or for our buying energy
resources from Russia and Kazakhstan at crazy prices?" "Nobody
tried to put pressure on me, there were questions certainly, and
there was my harsh statement: if we are going to die for each other,
let us not bulldoze each other, let us live like in a single state,"
Lukashenka continued.

Earlier "Kommersant" informed that at the informal CSTO summit in
Kyrgyzstan Lukashenka promised not only to sign the CORF agreement
at the earliest opportunity, but also to take the seat of the CSTO
chairman, which Minsk was to take during the June summit in Moscow.

In the near future Alyaksandr Lukashenka would have a chance to fulfill
his promises. In August in Kazakhstan the first military exercises
of the CORF are to start. They are to last till middle autumn. The
CSTO presidents are planning to observe their active phase which is
to start on September 14, personally.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization’s members are Russia,
Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Armenia.

Independent experts are convinced that the CORF is being created
primarily for crack down on civil disturbance by democratic opposition
in the countries of the CSTO.

TURKISH GROUP PRESSURES GOOGLE TO BECOME COMPLICIT IN GENOCIDE
DENIAL

— Launches Online Campaign to Reinstate Google Ads Misinformation
Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC – The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) today
launched an online campaign to pressure internet giant Google into
complicity in its denial of the Armenian Genocide, reported the
Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

The move comes in response to Google’s recent decision to stand by
its "Don’t be Evil" motto by stopping advertisements, placed by the
TCA, which drove internet traffic to websites denying the Armenian
Genocide. The TCA’s earlier Google Ads were triggered with search
entries including "Armenia", "Armenian", "Armenian Genocide" and
led to the Turkish Coalition of America website which includes
revisionist materials denying the centrally planned and
systematically carried out campaign of extermination of 1.5 million
Armenians by the Ottoman Turkish Government from 1915-1923. The
group also advocates against passage of Congressional legislation,
H.Res.252, recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

"The Turkish Coalition of America’s efforts to strong-arm Google to
join their Armenian Genocide denial campaign is as misguided as
their broader efforts to cover-up this crime against humanity,"
said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. "We commend Google
for reviewing its ad policy and respecting its ‘Don’t be Evil’
motto by turning down ads advocating hate and lies."

Google reviewed its policy on running Armenian Genocide denial ads
in June, 2009, after receiving thousands of letters from concerned
Armenian Americans and human rights activists expressing outrage at
the ads. An ANCA Action Alert distributed on May 28th explained
that "These ads are misleading to Google patrons, profoundly
offensive to victims and survivors of all genocides, and contribute
to an environment of outright denial and impunity in the face of
mass atrocities that continues to fuel the cycle of genocide to
this very day." A Facebook Causes page, titled "Stop Turkey’s
Anti-Armenian Genocide Propaganda on Google AdWords!" has over 9100
members.

The ANCA has posted an alert urging activists to contact Google in
support of their policy against genocide denial. To take action,
