ArmInfo. Production of Shahriar refinery (Tabriz) will be supplied
to Armenia and a number of countries in Middle Asia and the Caucasus,
says Shahriar refinery project manager Seyed Hassan Ghasemzadeh.

Seyed Hassan Ghasemzadeh says the oil products of the refinery will
meet EURO-V standard. Petrol with octane number 92 and 96 will produced
at the refinery. Lowering gas oil’s sulfur content, complying gas
oil with EURO-V standard, and constructing an FCC unit are among the
salient features of this project, he says.

As regards the surveys as part of the Yeraskh-Tabriz pipeline
construction project, he said that after the construction of the
refinery in Tabriz is over, all the necessary conditions for export
of petrol and diesel to Middle Asia and Caucasus, including Armenia,
will be created due to the above pipeline. In addition, the refinery
will produce propylene, Iran News reported. The refinery will satisfy
demand for fuel by the provinces Eastern Azerbaijan, Ardebil and
Western Azerbaijan.

Make-A-Wish Raises Funds At Bel-Air Bay Club Event

MAKE-A-WISH RAISES FUNDS AT BEL-AIR BAY CLUB EVENT

Palisadians were part of the fun when Make-A-Wish Foundation of
Greater Los Angeles held its 16th annual food- and wine-tasting
event on Sunday, August 9 at the Bel-Air Bay Club above Pacific Coast
Highway. Some 650 attendees were treated to generous samples created
by California wineries and gourmet restaurants at ‘Uncork A Wish,’
with proceeds helping Make-A-Wish grant the wishes of children with
life-threatening medical conditions.

Laurie Kaman, a Palisadian and television advertising executive who
is on Make-A-Wish’s board of directors, has been participating in the
organization’s fundraising for two decades. ‘This is our first year
at the Bel-Air Bay Club and the first time we’ve held this event on
a Sunday,’ Kaman said. ‘This was an opportunity to change it up in a
changing economy.’ Organizers said the event raised close to $200,000.

Kaman’s friend and fellow Palisdian Kathy Barnes, founder of the
chocolate enterprise Coco Fix, has been taking part in ‘Uncork’ for
five years. The pair fondly recalled Yveline, an 8-year-old Haitian
girl dying from a brain tumor whom they afforded a week-long trip to
Disneyworld with a $5,000 donation.

Make-A-Wish raises $3.5 million annually in Southern California and
grants more than 300 wishes to kids in Los Angeles County, ranging
from trips to visit out-of-state relatives to shopping sprees and
Sweet 16 and quincea’era parties.

Auction items included artwork from Make-A-Wish children,
V.I.P. tickets to ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and ‘So You Think You
Can Dance,’ a walk-on role on the Steven Spielberg-produced Showtime
program ‘United States of Tara,’ vacation packages to Africa and Aruba,
and a one-on-one visit with superstar Laker Kobe Bryant (which went
for a seemingly cheap $2,000 to the highest bidder).

Strolling around the classy, venerable Bay Club (a Palisades fixture
since the late 1920s), one could enjoy an endless selection of gourmet
food and fine wine.

Yet arguably the most popular restaurateur represented was Pink’s,
the venerable West Hollywood stand known for such signature hot dogs as
the Guadalajara Dog and the Lord of the Rings. Lo and behold, wearing
her signature pink blazer and accessorizing with a pink Nokia, was
Gloria Pink, co-owner of the La Brea-and-Melrose landmark. Pink was
joined by husband (and Pink’s co-owner) Richard Pink, and Richard’s
sister, Beverly Pink Wolfe.

‘We call it ‘chili dogs for charity," Richard said of Pink’s donation
to the event.

The Pink family also expressed their excitement about November 7, when
comedian Bill Cosby, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and KCET personality
Huell Howser will celebrate Pink’s 70th anniversary. ‘He calls it the
‘Howser Bowser," Gloria Pink said of the latter’s nickname for the
Huell Dog, a tortilla-wrapped double dog at Pink’s.

Guest Ken Davitian, the heavy-set character actor best known for his
roles in the hit movies ‘Borat’ (including the infamous nude wrestling
scene) and ‘Get Smart,’ was in good spirits.

‘I have two children,’ Davitian told the Palisadian-Post, ‘one of
whom was diagnosed at birth with a disease but is now terrific. So I
have a soft space in my heart for kids.’ The Armenian-American actor
added that he is also involved in St. Jude Hospital and like-minded
Armenian organizations.

Patricia Rubio, a Palisadian by way of Chicago who had bid on several
items, said she exercised all morning before attending ‘Uncork.’ ‘I’ve
been eating my way through this event,’ she said, laughing.

Rubio told the Post that her support was personal, as the Foundation
had granted her niece, Alexandria, a Disneyworld trip. ‘She was a
year-and-a-half when they found a brain tumor,’ Rubio said. ‘She
was in and out of chemotherapy until she was three.’ But that was
a decade ago. Today, Alexandra is 14, leading a normal, healthy,
cancer-free life.

‘When everything is going wrong and things appear dark,’ Rubio said,
‘Make-A-Wish gives them a little joy and hope.’

ArmInfo. Ardshininvestbank and ACBA-Cerdit Agricole Bank ensured the
biggest level of net profit in the banking system of Armenia over
the first half-year 2009 – 1.9 bln drams ($5.2 mln) and 1.6 bln drams
($4.3 mln).

Ameriabank occupied the third place – 55 mln drams, Prometei bank –
the forth – 403 mln drams and Armenian Development Bank – the fifth –
357 mln drams.

According to the analysis and ranking of Armenian commercial bank
prepared by ArmInfo, BTA Bank is the leader by the level of assets
profitability (the share of the net profit in assets – ROA) – 2,8%,
Bank occupies the second place – 2,2%, Armenian Development Bank –
the third – 2,1%, Ardshininvestbank – the forth – 1,6% and ACBA-Credit
Agricole – the fifth – 1,1%. Ardshininvestbank is the leader by the ROE
level – 8,3%, Armenian Development Bank occupies the second place –
6%, Artshakhbank – the third – 5,8%, ACBA-Credit Agricole Bank – the
forth – 5,7% and bank – the fifth – 4,4%. The aggregate net profit
of the banking system of Armenia according to the results of the
first half-year 2009 amounted to 4.4 bln drams ($12.1 mln), having
decreased by 64% if compared with the same period of 2008 and by 16%
if compared with 2005. According to the reports of 22 acting banks,
16 of them finished the first half-year 2009 with the summary profit
6.3 bln drams, and 6 banks – with the summary loss 1.9 bln drams. The
fact that earliar profitable banks have found themselves among the loss
banks is conditioned by the sharp March devaluation of the Armenian
dram, as a result of which loss was fixed in these banks at the end
of the first quarter 2009.

In the second quarter 2009 some of these banks managed to correct
the situation and start having profit, but the rest, as experts say,
will overcome this task over the current year.

The total capital of the banking system grew by 7,6% in the first
half-year 2009, and by 28,8% if compared with 2008 and by more than
threefold if compared with 2005, having amounted to 256.4 drams
($663 mln) as of 30 June 2009. This indicator grew by 5,2% in the
second quarter 2009 because of profit growing, whereas growing of
the authorized capital was fixed only in three banks (Unibank, and
Armswissbank). The annual growth of the total capital was provided
chiefly at the expense of the authorized capital growing by ten
banks. Ameriabank is the leader since the forth quarter 2008 by the
level of the authorized capital – 18.2 bln drams (annual growth
by 3 times), Ardshininvestbank occupies the second place – 15.5
bln drams (no change if compared with 2008), ACBA-Credit Agricole
Bank – the third – 14.6 bln drams. ACBA Credit Agricole Bank is the
leader by the size of the total capital as of 20 June 2009 – 28 bln
drams, Ardshininvestbank occupies the second place – 27 bln drams,
VTB-Armenia- the third – 23.2 bln drams, Ameriabank – the forth –
20.8 bln drams and – the fifth – 15.1 bln drams.

Novruzali Mamedov’s death is going to be a new reason for the
international society’s distrust towards Azerbaijan. Mamedov’s death
was not unexpected and the human rights defending organizations
have been voicing so many times about that case, defender Saida
Gojamanali told "Turan". "But nothing followed the monitoring group’s
encouragements, in the aftermath of which retired jailed having bad
health condition died," he said.

Thomas Hammerberg, the EU rapporteur on human rights affairs has

In Memory Of Aram Tigran… You Will Be Missed

IN MEMORY OF ARAM TIGRAN… YOU WILL BE MISSED
by Jeff Allan and Mehmet Fidan

Kurdish Herald
4, August 2009

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of
Aram Tigran, one of the most gifted contemporary Kurdish singers and
musicians. Mr. Tigran, age 75, died on August 8, 2009 in Evangelismos
General Hospital in Athens, Greece. His life story is indeed the story
of a refugee and was dedicated to the preservation and promotion of
the Kurdish identity and, more specifically, culture and language.

Mr. Tigran was an ethnic Armenian and son of an Armenian Genocide
survivor and native of Diyarbakir. He was born in Qamishlo,
a predominantly Kurdish city in Syria, in 1934, and showed a
great love and gift for music by the age of 9. By the age of 20,
he was singing in Kurdish, Arabic, and Armenian. In 1966, he moved
to Yerevan, Armenia, and worked for Yerevan Radio for 18 years. In
1995, he moved to Athens, Greece. During his 53 years music career,
he composed hundreds of songs, including 230 Kurdish songs (in various
dialects) and many in Arabic, Armenian, Turkish , Syriac, and Greek,
and released has twelve albums. He was loved and respected by millions
of Kurds and many of Kurdistan’s most well known artists, and he took
a keen interest in helping young, promising musicians.

Kurdish Herald 2009

Such was his influence on Kurdish music that, in 2005, a number of
artists collaborated to produce an album dedicated to Mr. Tigran
entitled Evina Aram (Love for Aram), in which they recorded their
own versions of many of his most popular songs. Among the artists
participating in this project were Gulistan, Rotinda, Xelil Xemgin,
Xero Abbas and Diyar.

After obtaining Greek citizenship two years ago, he visited his
ancestral homeland, seeing his parents’ home city for the first time
and later performing in both the Kurdish region for an audience of
tens of thousands and later in Istanbul at a DTP-sponsored event. This
year, he took part in Diyarbakir’s 9th Culture and Arts Festival,
but because of ill health, he was only able perform three Kurdish
songs. He was the final performer at this year’s Newroz celebration
in Diyarbakir, where he sang in Kurdish and Turkish.

Rather than close this humble eulogy with our own additional words
of tribute, we believe it is more fitting to end it with those of
Mr. Tigran from a verse that he wrote after seeing Diyarbakir for
the first time: Di xewnen sevan de min bawer nedikir Bi cavan bibînim
bajare Diyarbekir Rojbas Diyarbekir me pir beriya te kir Te derî li
me vekir Te me sa kir

If I had dreamed it, I would not have believed it Being able to see
the city of Diyarbakir with my own eyes Good day Diyarbakir, I missed
you very much You opened your gates to us You made us very happy

Jeff Allan is co-founder of Kurdish Herald and a member of the
editorial board. Mehmet Fidan holds a masters degree in Political
Science from Brooklyn College and is currently a Ph.D. candidate
in the History Department of the City University of New York. His
primary focus is the Kurdish Question in Turkey. He was previously
a history teacher at Istanbul University for 7 years.

HAYASTAN ALL-ARMENIAN FUND BEGINS RECONSTRUCTION OF NOYEMBERYAN HOSPITAL

2009/08 /14 | 12:57

Society Marzes

In July of this year the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund launched a major
development project to rebuild the Noyemberyan Hospital, in Armenia’s
Tavush Region. The initiative is co-sponsored by the fund’s German,
Australian, Swiss, and Lebanese affiliates. Additional support,
in the form of medical equipment, will be provided by the Union of
Armenian Physicians and Healthcare Professionals of Germany.

Currently crews are working on the first phase of the reconstruction
project, demolishing the existing building and laying the foundations
of the future structure, which will comprise an area of 2,600
meters square. Slated to be completed in the fall of 2010, the
Hayastan All-Armenian Fund’s ambitious initiative will result in an
outstanding, state-of-the-art healthcare facility offering a broad
range of medical services.

"I think it’s wonderful that our compatriots in the diaspora continue
to make a concerted and decisive effort in helping secure the ongoing
progress of our homeland, which hinges to a great degree on the
physical health of the Armenian public," said Ara Vardanyan, executive
director of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. "The reconstruction of
the Noyemberyan Hospital is an important step toward that goal."

Commenting on the project, Henrik Harutyunyan, chief physician at
the Noyemberyan Hospital, said that the facility serves some 1,400
individuals per year, admitting patients from not only throughout
Tavush but the neighboring Lori Region as well. Dr. Harutyunyan
added that the Noyemberyan Hospital has long been in a state of
disrepair and the need for major renovations had reached a critical
stage. "Thanks to the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund project, we expect
to have a first-class facility," he said.

"While Nikol Pashinyan is not released, we will do our best to let
every Armenian citizen know about his opinion, for everybody to feel
his presence and vigour.

Starting today we restart the Friday meetings and protests organized
initially by Nikol. We realize that Armenia’s salvation depends on one
person, that is each and every one of us. We can assert that we will
never bow down to any force. Our struggle is persistent, the victory-
inevitable," the young oppositionists’ statement reads.
