AND SHADOW
The Life of Yousuf Karsh
By Maria Tippett
Anansi, 426 pages, $39.95

Yousuf Karsh (who died at 93 on July 13, 2002) was one of the great
portrait photographers. He seemed to have photographed just about
everybody who was anybody in royalty, politics, business and the arts,
and he was able to arrange sittings in the Vatican, Buckingham Palace,
the White House and the Kremlin. His work was reproduced in magazines
and newspapers around the world – from Time, Newsweek, Life and the
Illustrated London News to Saturday Night, Maclean’s, Paris Match, the
Daily Express, The New York Times and Stern. International museums
held special Karsh exhibitions, and his portraits of Churchill,
Khrushchev, the young Queen Elizabeth, George Bernard Shaw and
Pablo Casals (among many others) made the human face a legend.
Legions of celebrities yearned to be "Karshed," and many of his books
and lithographs were among the fastest-selling in the
world. Considered "the Rembrandt" of portrait photographers because of
his extraordinary control of light and shadow and his painterly
manipulation of middle tones, Karsh emphasized hands as much as the
face, and he was able to romanticize his subjects. His first two books
of portraits (Faces of Destiny and Portraits of Greatness) made clear
that he was after dignity, not glamour; authority, not sensation;
greatness, not sex.
However, Karsh was considered an old-fashioned court photographer by
his detractors. By equating power and fame with greatness or goodness,
he subscribed to a view of celebrity that ultimately trapped him in a
style that amounted to hero-worship and monotonous respectability. One
critic wrote that his subjects’ faces looked as if they had been
lacquered in bronze. The late photo-journalist Sam Tata remarked in
Maclean’s that Karsh’s work was "an exercise in flattery and
retouching." Barry Callaghan complained of "a sameness about all
Karsh’s work," a result of "pursuing greatness as though it were a
commodity ready to be picked from the faces of those who are great."
Karsh’s portraits often look like greeting-card souvenirs, and they
lack some of the experimental quality found in those by Alfred
Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Bill Brandt, Arnold Newman and
others. Where Diane Arbus, in her direct, intense and unsentimental
portraits, wanted to show "what’s left when you take everything else
away," Karsh sought to embellish the human face. Where Henri
Cartier-Bresson waited to capture "the decisive moment" in spontaneous
reality (as in his stunning shot in 1945 of a female refugee’s
exploding rage at an informer for the Gestapo), Karsh sought to make
things happen – as when he suddenly pulled a cigar out of Winston
Churchill’s mouth before clicking his camera, or when he photographed
Pablo Casals from the rear in a small abbey alcove, focusing light on
the cellist’s back, or when he virtually turned two assembly-line
spray painters at Ford Canada into a tender, homoerotic pair.
Maria Tippett, one of the country’s most distinguished cultural
historians and a Governor-General’s Award-winner for her biography of
Emily Carr, seems to know Karsh’s limitations, but she is guilty of
lacquered hero-worship all her own. She views him as "that most dearly
beloved archetype, the striving immigrant who makes good in the
limitless opportunity of the New World."
The eldest child in an Armenian family from Mardin, Turkey, a family
that survived genocide at the hands of Turkey during the First World
War – he had seen a slain infant hanging on a meat hook – Karsh was
sponsored to Canada by his uncle, George Nakash, a photographer in the
American pictorialist mode, who made him his assistant while paying
for his formal education.
Armenians were then "non-preferred" newcomers because their language
and customs represented challenges to Anglo-Saxon traditions. Mocked
for his foreign accent and poor English, he used elaborate politeness
and old-world manners as his protective mask throughout his life. He
spent 12 years of tutelage under John H. (Garo) Garoian, an ebullient
Armenian-American in Boston who encouraged him to study the Old
Masters of painting. Karsh learned to be flamboyant in dress from
Garo, taking to wearing a Borsalino hat and flowing black cape in the
camera room at the height of his later success, following his first
big break as theatre photographer for the Ottawa Drama League, where
he met Solange Gauthier, who became his first wife.
Karsh’s apprenticeship and fame are all covered adequately by Tippet,
who had access to the huge Karsh archives, as well as to his widow
Estrellita (his American second wife) and several of his former
apprentices and assistants. However, the book is stiffly formal and
lacking in flair, reading at times like a textbook history, and more
concerned with externals than with the inner man.
Though Tippett acknowledges that "as with his black and white
portraits, Karsh left some parts of his life in light and other parts
in shadow" in his autobiography (In Search of Greatness), she does not
explore, much less illuminate, some of those shadowed parts. She gives
quick mention to the Armenian genocide in her section on his boyhood
in Mardin and Syria. She notes the adult Karsh’s moods of depression,
but fails to explore their possible roots. She subsequently refers to
Karsh’s reluctance to be seen as part of the Armenian community in
Ottawa, and of his apparent reluctance to help certain family members
immigrate to Canada, but she doesn’t question whether such shrinking
or shirking had anything to do with the inner turmoil of a genocide
survivor.
Her book is shallowly repetitive about many things: how Solange was
his perfect helpmate, putting his subjects at ease, keeping the books,
encouraging his ambition, giving him access to many of the most
influential politicians and dignitaries in Ottawa; how Karsh used
lighting and hands in portraits; how he and his wife were treated as
international celebrities; and how he was interested in humanity
rather than in politics.
However, deeper questions – about the intimate side of the marriage,
the limits of his concept of greatness and of his craft, and the
inscape of his personality – are given scant treatment. Her biography
casts light on the already well illuminated aspects of Karsh’s legend,
but its style is workmanlike rather than voluptuous.

WE SHOULDN’T LOOK FOR THE ROOT OF THE EVIL IN KARABAKH

Recently Ter-Petrosyan `brought his regular pleasant surprise’ to
the native society, and made Raffi Hovhannisyan happy by promising the
latter to visit the central office of `Heritage’ party.
`Does this mean that `Heritage’ activists are ready to participate
in the initiative of nominating the ex-President as pro-opposition
united candidate?’
In response to our question Secretary of NA `Heritage’ faction,
Stepan Safaryan shrugged his shoulders and said, ‘The party hasn’t
discussed such issue.’
How did he evaluate Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s speech delivered during
October 26 demonstration? It turned out that Mr. Safaryan had just
returned from Tehran where he didn’t have access to the Internet and
didn’t manage to familiarize himself with the epochal speech of the
ex-President.
After being informed from us that ex-President appeared in the
opening of the demonstration season with a `white tailcoat’, with
absolutely no hint about the numerous temptations faced by the people
during his sensitive years of power, calling the government in power
`pro-Kocharyan criminal administration’, no more no less than a `state
of chieftains and plunderers’. Our interlocutor asked with
astonishment `Did he really say that?’ And added, `If the conversation
is about normal political process, naturally both sides must give
detailed explanation not regarding the past but also the current
processes.’
`Anyhow, how does the member of the political power that came out
with an initiative on `Armenia’s recognition of NKR’ evaluate Levon
Ter-Petrosyan’s concept of the regulation of Karabakh issue?’
`I don’t think Levon Ter-Petrosyan came out with his approaches on
the regulation of Karabakh issue. I haven’t seen it yet,’ the
Secretary of `Heritage’ faction diplomatically recorded.
By announcing in his speech in `Armenia-Marriott’ that Karabakh
issue needs swift `solution’, otherwise Armenia won’t have future and
that day-by-day Azerbaijan makes its attitude tougher and that it will
never agree to mutual concessions, didn’t Levon Ter-Petrosyan
reconfirm his capitulatory attitudes of 1997? Doesn’t this mean that
the root of all our problems that is to say the evil is Karabakh?
`I don’t agree that Karabakh is the reason of our bad life. I would
agree to this concept had we conducted effective governance during the
previous years and came to a conclusion that it is not enough. Of
course no one can refuse that the failure to regulate Karabakh issue
hinders the country’s development but this doesn’t mean that NKR
conflict is to blame for all the problems faced by the country,’
S. Safaryan underscored in response to our question.
In his accusations addressed to the `administration’ Levon
Ter-Petrosyan didn’t forget to mention about the abrupt economic
growth recorded by Azerbaijan during the recent years, as compared to
which Armenia’s 12% annual economic growth `is nothing’. Does this
mean that it is the fault of `pro-Kocharyan administration’ that
Azerbaijan has oil, but Armenia unfortunately lacks oil resources.
According to our interlocutor ex-President didn’t make a revelation
by saying this, `Of course in comparison, in terms of financial and
economic means Azerbaijan’s progress is logical. In my view the issue
is on quite another plane – from the point of view of security to what
extent are we interrelated to the European security system are we able
to neutralize the danger? Here we have real slip-ups.

Sunglasses Spoil Sight

SUNGLASSES SPOIL SIGHT

It is already two years Mary hasn’t gone out at twilight. This is
not accounted for her fear from darkness.

A few years ago she bought dark sunglasses. Instead of protecting
her eyes from the sun, the glasses merely spoil her sight and hurt
the pupils.

The main function of sunglasses is to protect people from the
sun’s ultraviolet rays but frequently sunglasses have side-effects,
"ArmOptics" Company Director Arsah Halerian said.

He assures that without special equipment nobody is capable of deciding
the harmfulness of sunglasses.

"The pupil of the eye widens if one wears dark glasses. Besides,
ultraviolet rays penetrate into the eye harming its retina," Arsah
Halerian told A1+.

"High quality glasses are already on sale, but few can afford them
nowadays as only the glass costs 10-15 thousand drams," he says.

According to the ArmOptics’ head even expensive glasses do not
ensure full protection of eyes. The society still lacks the culture
of verifying glasses’ certification.

To note, all glasses have certifications specifying their index
of harmfulness.

Sunglasses are obligatory especially in winter when the sun’s
ultraviolet rays double, Arsah Halerian says.

Vahan Gabrielian, a doctor of Gapex Ocular Clinic, states that the
wrong choice of sunglasses might lead to serious side-effects and
spoil a person’s sight.

"I advise our residents to choose glasses very carefully otherwise
they will have to wear spectacles till the end of their lives."

Nalbandian now goes on to meet Spain’s David Ferrer for a place in
the semi-finals.

TURKISH MINISTER SAYS ARMENIAN RESOLUTION "POISONS" TURKISH-US RELATIONS

Anatolia News Agency, Turkey
Oct 30 2007

Ankara, 30 October: The Turkish foreign minister and chief negotiator
for EU talks, Ali Babacan, said Turkey hopes the US House committee
resolution on Armenian allegations will not be brought to a full
House vote.

"This issue poisons relations between Turkey and the United States,"
Babacan said at a seminar on foreign policy at Justice and Development
(AK) Party HQs.

Reminding that the US House of Representatives foreign affairs
committee approved a resolution on Armenian allegations regarding
the incidents of 1915, Babacan said the approval of the resolution
had negative effect on Turkish-US relations.

"We hope this issue will be over," Babacan told the seminar.

"Mr Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote a letter to his Armenian
counterpart and offered to establish a joint commission to conduct a
research in archives. We are confident of our history and ourselves. We
are always ready to face our history. However, we have not got any
response yet," Babacan said.

Babacan said full membership to EU and Cyprus question are the two
priorities in Turkey’s foreign policy.

He said Turkey’s relations with the EU continue on a sound legal base,
noting that they have no doubts about Turkey’s EU process. "It is
Turkey’s right," he added.

On Cyprus, Babacan said Turkey will continue to exert efforts to find
a permanent solution to the problem in a mechanism that would include
the United Nations.

The Committee of Support for Jirair Sefilyan and Vardan Malkhasyan
released information that the ministry of justice had searched the
prison of Vardashen where Jirair Sefilyan and Vardan Malkhasyan are
serving their sentence.

The press secretary of the department of penitentiaries of the Ministry
of Justice refuted the information released by the Committee. Namely,
the press secretary’s release runs that on October 29 the department
of penitentiaries searched all the inmates of Vardashen prison,
and only the staff of the penitentiary was involved. "The action
was not extraordinary and individual. It is held on a general basis
in accordance with Article 72 of the Penal Code of the Republic
of Armenia."

According to the press secretary of the department of penitentiaries
of the ministry of justice, civilian clothes were found with Jirair
Sefilyan and Vardan Malkhasyan which is prohibited by the regulations
of penitentiaries affirmed by 1543 N decision of the government passed
on August 3, 2006.

The press secretary also informs that the department of penitentiaries
did not administer any disciplinary punishments except explanatory
work. Besides, V. Yeghiazaryan did not announce that the five inmates
sharing the cell with the two abovementioned people were to get
a warning.

Today groups were chosen in the coming CIS soccer competition. The
participants were divided into four groups. The Armenian champion will
play in the fourth group (D), against Uzbekistan, Belarus, and Ukraine.

In group A, Russia, Moldova, Turkmenistan, and Estonia will play. Group
B consists of the champions of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania,
and Tajikistan.

Group C participants will be Latvia, Georgia, Serbia, and
Kirghizstan. The teams will play one round, after which those occupying
the first two places will continue in the playoffs.

Unlike other teams, our team’s opponents are already known. Ukraine
will present "Shakhtyor," from Drnetski, while Belarus is represented
by the "Bate" team from Borisov. Most probably, the champion from
Uzbekistan will be "Pakhtakor," from Tashkent. As opposed to recent
competitions, this year’s will be held in St. Petersburg, not in
Moscow.

RESOLUTION ON "IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIP WITH TURKEY" INTRODUCED IN U.S. SENATE

PanARMENIAN.Net
31.10.2007 12:16 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In a move widely seen as intended to calm Turkish
anger over growing strains in its ties with the United States,
Senators Robert Byrd (D-WV) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) have introduced
legislation which ignores key points of tension in this relationship
and offers unconditional praise to Turkey and its leaders, reported
the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

"The resolution introduced by Senators Smith and Byrd neither serves
U.S. interests nor advances American values by sugar-coating Turkey’s
record or by ignoring serious tensions in the U.S.-Turkey bilateral
relationship," said American Hellenic Institute Executive (AHI)
Director Nick Laragakis and ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian,
in a joint statement issued today. "Any legislation that the Foreign
Relations Committee considers on this issue should clearly and
prominently address Turkey’s threats to invade and destabilize northern
Iraq, its immoral and heavy-handed threats against the recognition
of the Armenian Genocide, military occupation of Cyprus, continued
airspace violations of Greek- sovereign airspace over the Aegean,
blockade of Armenia, mistreatment of the Kurds, and restrictions on
the religious freedom of the Ecumenical Patriarch and other Christian
leaders."

The ANCA and AHI shared their concerns regarding this legislation today
with Members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In making
the case regarding Turkey’s increasing unreliability, the ANCA also
circulated a recent Los Angeles Times opinion piece by Graham Fuller,
a former Vice-Chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council,
who argued that: "Turkish-American relations have been deteriorating
for years, and the root explanation is simple and harsh: Washington’s
policies are broadly and fundamentally incompatible with Turkish
foreign policy interests in multiple arenas".

Introduced on October 29, S.Res.358 begins by asserting that the
"United States and Turkey share common ideals and a clear vision for
the 21st Century, in which freedom and democracy are the foundation
of peace, prosperity and security." It concludes by thanking Prime
Minister Erdogan for "continued discussions with officials in the
U.S. and Iraq regarding constructive stabilization efforts in northern
Iraq." The resolution makes no mention of Turkey’s controversial
relations with Hamas, its growing ties with Iran, or its refusal in
2003 to allow U.S. troops to open a northern front in Iraq.
