“Women of 1915”

“Women of 1915” is a documentary film that unearths the story of the gender that was left behind to experience the worst kind of torture yet display the most heroic form of resilience. Through the movie, the audience bears witness to women who defied gender expectations by fighting back with the same strength and spirit that they have passed down to future generations of women and men alike. The stories of these women, along with the lasting impact they had on the lives they created and touched, will have viewers feeling both heartbreak and admiration.

Through Maronian’s “Women of 1915,” every viewer who has left an ancestral homeland for reasons not of their own choosing, or whose ancestors have done so, will be reconnected through the sacrifices of the women featured in the film. Maronian’s recognized masterpiece on this subject, along with others of his award-winning works, such as “Orphans of the Genocide,” have resonated throughout the United States, Europe, and South America.

Azerbaijani Slush Fund Linked to Safarov Extradition

Axe-murderer Ramil Safarov being honored in Azerbaijan after his release from a Hungarian jail

BUDAPEST, Hungary—An investigation by a Hungarian news agency reveals that Azerbaijan has used a $3 billion slush fund to facilitate the release and extradition Azerbaijani ax murder Ramil Safarov, who brutally murdered an Armenian soldier, Gurgen Markarian, with an ax during NATO exercises in Hungary in 2004.

An investigation by the Hungarian news site Átlátszó.hu revealed that several bank transfers – totaling more than $7 million – were made to an MKB bank account in Budapest right around the time the Hungarian government handed over Safarov to the Azerbaijan.

According to Átlátszó.hu, the Budapest bank account belonged to an offshore company owned by the son of an influential Azeri politician and got an infusion of more $7 million in 2012 around the time of the Safarov release and extradition.

“The Azerbaijani Laundromat,” a report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project revealed a $3 billion slush fund used by Azerbaijan to launder money and bribe politicians

The existence of the almost $3 billion slush fund used by high-level Azerbaijani officials to launder money and bribe politicians in European countries was revealed on Monday by the British The Guardian newspaper, which is a news outlet partnering with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project that published an extensive investigation, entitled “The Azerbaijani Laundromat.” The OCCRP report detailed that over a two-year period, more than $2.9 billion had passed through certain UK-0based shell companies – Polux Management LP, Hilux Services LP, Metastar Invest LLP, and LCM Alliance LLP – that “are part of a larger constellation of companies set up by unscrupulous agents to launder and steal large amounts of money” on behalf of Azerbaijan’s ruling elite.

The MKB Bank account belonged to a Velasco International Inc., which received the $7 million infusion of cash from Metastar Invest LLP, one of the shell companies used to hide the slush fund identified by the OCCRP report.

Velasco International was incorporated in the Virgin Islands and is owned by Azerbaijani deputy prime minister Yacub Eyubov’s son, Orhan Eyubov, whose name is continuously referenced in “The Azerbaijani Laundromat.”

In June 2012, when Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban visited Azerbaijan, he was greeted by the elder Eyubov before meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev . “The Azerbaijani Laundromat” report said that “there is ample evidence of its [the slush fund’s] connection to the family of President Ilham Aliyev.”

Meanwhile, Metastar Invest LLP is the company that reportedly paid Luca Volonte, a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe, known as PACE, who is facing prosecution in Italy for allegedly accepting 2.4 million euros to defend Azerbaijani interests in Italy and within PACE. In 2013, Volonte vocally defended the Hungary’s new constitution, which curtailed people’s individual rights, and accused those who criticized official Budapest of carrying out a “witch hunt.”

On Wednesday, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó categorically rejected the allegations by Átlátszó.hu, the Hungarian investigative journalism organization.

“In the firmest possible way, I reject any inference or insinuation which make a connection between the Hungarian foreign policy decisions and the aforementioned international criminal actions,” Szijjártó said. “I really hope we uncover the truth of what happened very soon.”

On Tuesday, after “The Azerbaijani Laundromat” was published, Aliyev’s press secretary accused the “Armenian lobby” of working with American billionaire George Soros, to wage ”a smear campaign against the president of Azerbaijan and members of his family.”

Artsakh Celebrates Independence Anniversary With Calls for Recognition

STEPANAKERT—Thousands of Artsakh residents and visitors from around the world on Saturday marked the 26th anniversary of Artsakh’s independence during various events and parades. One message, however, was clear: the international community must recognize Artsakh’s independence.

The series of events dedicated to the independence anniversary began early in the morning with a steady flow of people visiting the Stepanakert Memorial Complex, where President Serzh Sarkisian of Armenia and his Artsakh counterpart Bako Sahakian led a procession of officials to lay wreaths at the tombs of freedom fighters, whose sacrifice has made the Artsakh Republic prosper.

A long and large procession of people went through the streets of Stepanakert carrying with them a large Artsakh flag marked a day of festivities in all regions of the republic.

In his congratulatory statement, President Sahakian placed an emphasis on the importance for the international community to recognize Artsakh’s independence.

He said during the past 26 years, “together with our sisters and brothers from Armenia and the Diaspora we have managed to realize numerous strategic programs, which day by day bring us closer to attaining our cherished national goals, further strengthen and develop our country.”

“I am confident the civilized and progressive world will sooner or later recognize this equitable and lawful resolution of the Artsakh people, will not hesitate to admit the prevailing realities that demonstrate our adherence to universal human values and commitment to international norms and principles,” added Sahakian.

“I am confident since our people have proved through their painstaking work and dedicated service of their brave sons that they are able to build, make prosperous and safeguard their ancestral Fatherland, their independent statehood,” said Sahakian.

Events marking the 26th anniversary of Artsakh’s independence began before Saturday. On Friday, the long-awaited Vardenis-Martakert highway, the second road connecting Artsakh to Armenia was inaugurated. A day earlier, several people received awards of recognition from Sahakian, with the highest honor, the Golden Eagle Order and a title of “Hero of Artsakh,” being bestowed to former deputy prime minister General Arthur Aghabekyan.

Afterwards Aronian said that the loss in the 2nd tour helped him change his game.

“I had draws after that and played well in the latest two games. I’m always ready to win, I seek my chances and I find where my opponents’ weak points. They met my expectations yesterday and today,” Aronian said.

The grandmaster noted he dedicated the win to his mother, who celebrated her 70th birthday on the previous day, and added, “My mother has huge contribution to my success. My first big achievement, the U12 World Championship gold medal in 1994, happened on her birthday. She came to the tournament with me and since we had no money for the hotel, my mother slept in the bus throughout the tournament. My win today was symbolic to me.”
