Nagorno-Karabakh Haunts Energy Sector

NAGORNO-KARABAKH HAUNTS ENERGY SECTOR

United Press International
July 15 2009

MOSCOW, July 15 (UPI) — Russian interests and rancor between Ankara
and Baku over the Nagorno-Karabakh region may undercut progress on
the Nabucco pipeline for Europe, analysts say.

A move by Ankara to open the Turkish border with Armenia has
angered energy partners for the $10.3 billion Nabucco gas pipeline
in Azerbaijan.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a bitter military battle over
Nagorno-Karabakh in the early 1990s, and the regional fallout from
disputes over the territory remains tense despite a 1994 cease-fire.

The Nabucco project for Europe reached a milestone Monday with an
intergovernmental agreement among its partners, but the project faces
setbacks in terms of financing and gas commitments.

Turkey, meanwhile, is keen on developing the economy in the region
along the border with Armenia and sees opportunity in the Armenia
energy sector. But Russian efforts to expand its energy hold in the
region may spill over to curtail European efforts at energy security,
writes Alexandros Petersen in the Moscow Times.

Petersen, associate director of the Eurasia Energy Center at the
Atlantic Council in Washington, writes that a push by Moscow to
establish a footprint in Armenia could expand its influence in the
regional energy sector.

He says that while Western allies have largely ignored Armenia due to
the Nagorno-Karabakh, a Russian push into the region and simmering
tensions between Baku and Ankara could have a significant impact on
regional energy security issues, including Nabucco.

The Presidents of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan will discuss the
Nagorno-Karabakh settlement on July 18, RIA Novosti quoted Russian
President’s Aide Sergey Prikhodko as saying.

"Such a meeting will take place, obviously, in the Kremlin on 18
July… We do not plan to ink any papers and do not have such an aim,"
Prikhodko said.

Russia believes that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
is possible in the foreseeable future, he said.

"The main thing is to bring together the positions of the two parties,"
Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation said.

He stressed that Russia’s efforts to resolve the conflict have received
support not only by Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also a number of
other countries, including the United States and France.

Chess legends to play again

Chess legends to play again

The Straits Times (Singapore)
July 10, 2009

MOSCOW – Chess legends Garry Kasparov and Anatoli Karpov are to relive
their epic 1984 world championship duel 25 years on by contesting a
new match this September in the Spanish city of Valencia.

‘It will be 25 years since the start of the matches (against Karpov),
there is nostalgia about this unique event,’ Mr Kasparov, now a
Russian opposition politician and Kremlin critic, told AFP.

‘This is where modern chess began.’ The September 21-24 match is not
expected to reflect the suspense of their first encounter and will be
more of ‘a ceremonial tournament", Mr Kasparov said, explaining there
would be a time-limit on moves.

The five-month 1984 match marked the first battle between the famous
chess rivals. At the time the world champion Karpov was 33 years old
and the challenger Kasparov just 21.

The match was ended without result by World Chess Federation chief
Florencio Campomanes on alleged health grounds, a decision that was
controversial, as both players said they wanted to continue.

Mr Kasparov later defeated Mr Karpov narrowly. He won the world
championship in late 1985 and defended his title the following
year. The last time he played

Mr Karpov was in 1990 when he narrowly won.

Mr Kasparov has been active in the political opposition to Russian
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin since announcing in 2005 he was
withdrawing from competitive chess and creating his own political
party.

Mr Karpov was undisputed world chess champion from 1975 to 1985 and
FIDE world chess champion from 1993 to 1999.. Both Karpov and Kasparov
are considered among the greatest chess players ever.

Sergio Espinoza Ready For Title Run

SERGIO ESPINOZA READY FOR TITLE RUN

PhilBoxing.com
Tue, 07 Jul 2009

In trying to escape wild baseballs, flyweight Sergio Espinoza of San
Diego, CA, took a strange road as he chose a sport that consisted of
him getting punched in the face. The "San Diego Sensation" is in the
co-feature bout of "Havoc at the Hard Rock II: No Mercy" this Friday,
July 10th at the open air Woodstock Terrace at the Hard Rock Hotel
in downtown San Diego, CA.

"To be honest, I ran in by mistake. I used to play baseball back in
L.A. for like three years and when I got to San Diego I used to see
these guys pitch the baseball real fast and I got scared because I
got him a couple of times before," Espinoza says laughing "Where I
used to live in some apartments there was a kid that used to box in
Mexicali and he asked me if I wanted to go to the gym, I wasn’t sure
at first but I decided to give it a try."

The at the time thirteen year old Espinoza definitely gave it try
and although it took some time to show his talent, eventually the
"San Diego Sensation" showed himself and his coach, Robert Coons,
that he was something special.

"Sergio was about thirteen, fourteen years old, he came in here with
about seven other kids," Coach Coons states fondly. "I couldn’t have
picked him out from the group, as a matter of fact, there was another
kid that stuck with it as an amateur but he eventually went back to
the streets. Sergio just stayed with it and ended up winning almost
everything as an amateur. For him to be around since he was fourteen,
tells you a lot about his character."

"I was in the gym for four or five months and coach said I was
going to compete. I said ‘what do you mean compete?’" Espinoza says
chuckling. "I had never seen boxing in my life and I didn’t know there
were competitions. I decided to try it and then I competed in the
jr. Olympics. I went against these kid that was like 38-1, Eddie Cruz,
I remember his name. We fought in the championship and he ended up
winning, of course, but he never thought that was my first fight, he
thought I gave him a run for his money so I showed him my pass book."

Espinoza stayed with it and ended up amassing an impressive amateur
record of 73-12 on his way of becoming the first San Diego amateur
fighter to capture all of the major amateur titles, the Junior
Nationals, the National PAL title, the National Gold Gloves and the
USA Nationals.

"I won my first tournament when I was 17. That was against
17-18 year old guys. The winner would represent USA in the world
championships. That was my first major tournament, Espinoza says
proudly. "I feel good, I thank God for giving me the will, the strength
and the determination to doing it. I first I never knew that I was
the first to win all those major tournaments. When I came back and I
was seventeen and fought the big boys, that is when it really counts
because a lot kids when the tournament when they are young and then
they can’t win anything so it made me feel better winning with the
big boys."

At 22, the now father of two joined the punch for bucks ranks in a
four rounder where he defeated future NABO super flyweight champion
Kahren Harutyunyan at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in north San Diego.

"I remember I had about fifteen opponents change and in different
weight classes. To be honest, I should of stayed amateur until 2004
but I was so anxious to jump in the pro ranks, I wasn’t thinking about
the money," Espinoza remembers. "I remember I fought a 2-0 undefeated
Armenian guy and he became a NABO champion. That morning I had to go
up to 120 lbs. from 115 lbs. to fight. It was a tough fight but we
beat him."

Espinoza kept fighting, mostly in his adopted town of San Diego,
cultivating a fan base that had followed him since the amateurs but
not surprisingly the politics of boxing reared their ugly heads in
the direction of the affable Espinoza.

Coach Coons remembers the circumstances.

There is a whole story of why he hasn’t fought in San Diego. Sergio
was an extremely popular athlete when he was an amateur. He used to
bring 200-300 fans as an amateur. Once he went pro, he used to bring
the same amount of fans to the shows. Promoters here in San Diego
started using his name with no intention of using him," Coons states
choosing his words carefully. "Fans go to 5-6 different competitions
and they would tell him ‘Why is your name on the thing? I went to
the show and you didn’t even box.’ The people stated blaming him and
we decided to not fight in San Diego anymore because the promoters
started killing his reputation."

After three years of fighting consistently, Espinoza began to have
trouble finding fights and began to feel the burn of overtraining
but not having the opportunity to show his skills.

"I wasn’t getting any fights, I had six fights postpone in like six
months. I was training and training and not getting any fights so I
was getting burned out. These people would tell me that I was going to
fight, knowing that I wasn’t and wait until two days before to tell
me that I wasn’t fighting," Espinoza then made a difficult decision
professional but an even more important one personally.

"I told coach that I was going to take some time off, I had just
gotten engaged, so I just worked and saved up to get married. I just
wanted to come back and hopefully everything that was going on with
these people goes away and we can start all over again."

Now Espinoza has been married for six years and holds a full time
job in the hotel industry.

After a year and a half, Sergio felt the itch to lace up the gloves
again and fight.

"After my layoff, I fought this kid from L.A. and they made it a six
rounder because they knew I was a front runner and that I would get
tired, it should of been a four rounder. I dropped him in the second
round with an overhand right and I thought ‘please God, keep him on
the floor’," Espinoza says chuckling. "I was already tired but he
got up and I lost that fight. That was my fault and coach’s fault but
after I went on a winning streak beating everybody that they put in
front of us regardless of weight class."

Because of the winning streak, Espinoza signed with his first promoter,
the once defunct but coming back Guilty Boxing out of Las Vegas,
which was a well received experience for Espinoza.

"I was with them for two years, they kept me busy in Vegas and I
didn’t have to fight in San Diego. I didn’t want to be part of the
politics but it never bothered me because I knew what had to be done."

After his promoter Guilty Boxing folded, Espinoza kept fighting
sporadically and then an opportunity arose.

"Some time later we fought a guy that (Marco Antonio) Barrera had,
his name is Juan Alberto Rosas, he was ranked #9 by the IBF. Golden
Boy said ‘we are going to give you an opportunity’. They said they
were going to sign the winner but it didn’t matter to me because I
knew I could beat him. I want to fight the best fighters so I can
become a better fighter. Nobody thought I was going to beat him but
I knew that my experience, my talent and the skills that I have and
I beat him unanimous for ten rounds."

Golden Boy did not offer him a contract but Espinoza was undeterred
even after suffering a tough loss to journey man Benji Garcia and
then another to world ranked Luis "Titi" Maldonado in ’07 although
Espinoza is of a different opinion regarding that loss.

In that fight I beat him for twelve rounds, cut him, busted him up
and I lost a unanimous decision. It broke my heart because even in
their corner, they knew they lost, everybody knew he lost."

Despite the loss, Ontario’s Thompson Boxing became Espinoza’s second
promoter of his career when he signed with them in early 2008. In his
first fight with the local promotional company, Espinoza was matched
up tough but shone through with the challenge.

"I fought a tough guy Wilbert Uicab, he was ranked #8 by the WBC and
I beat him unanimously in eight rounds. After that I was ranked #9
by the WBC and #14 by the IBF."

A month later, Espinoza became a test for Manny Roman, whose career
is manned by 2007’s manager of the year Frank Espinoza. Espinoza lost
a majority decision that was for the vacant WBC Continental Americas
Flyweight title. With the loss, Espinoza was dropped from the world
rankings by both organizations and his contract with Thompson Boxing.

At 31 years of age, Espinoza knows that time is running out for his
dream to become a world champion and is ready to make that run towards
a coveted title.

"I am just thinking of an opportunity. Like I told Roberto Diaz,
my co-manager, bring on anybody, bring on Donaire, I even will go
to Argentina to fight that Navaez guy, I don’t care, as long as I
get one opportunity, that is all it takes to prove the world wrong,
that I am still become a world champion regardless of my record,
I still got what it takes."

Espinoza is clearly excited in fighting in his hometown once again
in front of the fans that showed him their support in the beginning
his career.

"It makes me feel good, having other promoters, new promoters here
in San Diego and they picking the right guy that is really willing
to fight anybody and to just prove my name out there and to prove to
everybody that I can become a world champion," Espinoza concludes. "I
am staying active but I do want tougher fights and fighters that
are ranked so I can get that opportunity against any of the world
champions in my weight class."

In Memories Of Armenian Genocide 1915: A Kurdish Perspective

IN MEMORIES OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE 1915: A KURDISH PERSPECTIVE
By Ara Alan

Kurdish Aspect

Armenian genocide remembrance was held at Georgia State Capital. Many
distinguished guests were present: Armenian community in Georgia,
Kurdish community in Atlanta, American friends and condemners of
genocide, elected officials such as: State Senator Van Street, Superior
Court Chief Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore, City Court Chief Judge
Elaine Carlisle, Atlanta Chief of Police Richard Pennington, and
Fulton County Sheriff Jackie Berrett, Dr. Julieta Stepanyan-Abgaryan,
Mrs. Carolyn Young, spoke on behalf of her husband, civil rights
leader, former Congressman and former US Ambassador to the UN Andrew
Young, and ANC Georgia Chairman Sarkis Agasarkisian.

Among the guests was a Kurdish perspective, shared by Ara Alan:

We are gathered today on April 24th to commemorate the souls lost
during the Armenian genocide. We are gathered to deliver the cries
of help from those who were silenced in 1915 by the ottoman Turks. I
would like to take a moment to remember all victims of genocide across
the twentieth century; a century that has been darkened with their
blood and silenced by our disregard.

Ottoman Turks led the way into the twentieth century with its first
act of genocide, their example was followed by many more such as the
Holocaust in Germany, Pol-Pot in Cambodia, Rawanda, Kosovo and the
notorious Anfal campaign by Saddam Hussein in Iraqi- Kurdistan.

I come and stand with our friends the Armenians because I understand
your cause. I understand what it means to have genocide committed
against you. I look into you with inspiration and pride. I wonder
will our next generation be as courageous as you are. Like your grant
parent, crime of genocide has been committed against us.

In Iraq, and in name of purification of a country, thousands of Kurds
were taken from their villages and murdered in the deserts south
of the country. This operation of genocide was name Anfal. In this
operation Saddam Hussein used chemical weapons. He used this illegal
weapon to help him scare and kill the innocent villagers. It was used
as a tool to round up the people.

In a strategic military planning; the Iraqi Army would attack a
region in Kurdistan from three or more fronts. They would leave
only one opening for the people. Doing so, the Army would force
the residents of many villages in that region to gather in one
location. The congregated villagers were then rounded up and shipped
to concentration camps where they were systematically killed.

Anfal genocide started in 1988 but it is without an end. The gassing
during Anfal genocide has acted as a mutagen and caused the DNA of
its victims to change. According to the health minister of Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) the ratio of patients with cancer in the
gassed populations is 5:1 when compared to non-gassed populations.

Many of the little girls exposed to the gassing in 1988 today give
birth to children with down-syndrome or still-birth and they have very
high rates of miscarriage and some are completely infertile. Incident
cases of breast cancer are much higher. Breast cancer in Kurdistan
is much more aggressive than in other countries, and it is much more
likely to kill.

As result of the gassing many Kurds are dying today. Many are
paralyzed, handicapped, blinded or bedbound. Many babies from the
new generation are born with genetic diseases that result in their
death or a life that is dependent on a medical care which is almost
non-existent where they are born. Kurdish genocide continues since
1988 into post Saddam-Iraq and today.

Dr. Stanton from genocide watch has categorized genocide into
eight stages. He has done so to help the international community
to use these stages as an indicators and a warning sign of upcoming
genocides. Strangely enough all genocide follows these eight stages.

They all start with classification of the target group then followed
by symbolization, then dehumanization, organization, polarization of
the society, preparation, the seventh is the actual extermination,
and the eighth stage is denial.

It might come to you as a surprise, why would denial be part of
genocide? According to Genocide Watch; denial is among the surest
indicators of further genocidal massacres.

The perpetrators of genocide dig up the mass graves, burn the bodies,
try to cover-up the evidence and intimidate the witnesses. They deny
that they committed any crimes, and often blame what happened on the
victims. In short denial is a sign of justification of genocide and
accepting it as a method of governance.

Turkey’s 94 years of denial policy should come as an alarm to the
international community. The denial of Armenian genocide of 1915 was
followed by the Dermis massacre in 1937. In a similar fashion to the
Armenian genocide and with the exact justification 78 000 Kurds were
massacred in that city in Turkey. The denial policy once again allowed
Turkey to destroy over 4000 Kurdish villages in the 1990s.

Just like the Ottoman Turks greeted the twentieth century with
stains of genocide, our twenty-first century already has a stain:
Darfur. Darfur stands tall, as a symbol of our failure to learn from
previous genocides and our tolerance for genocide denial.

Genocides don’t occur because one race of humanity is superior to the
other. They don’t occur because one nation has the right to eradicate
another or that one religious view or political ideology is superior
above those different from it.

Genocide occurs when one group appoint themselves as superior and
the world turns a blind eye. Genocide occurs because we let it. Our
silence is the fuel that genocide perpetrators use to burn the bodies
and hid the evidence.

Let us not be silent… let us Speak and condemn… let us bring
those that deny to acceptance.

Head Of Central Bank Of Armenia Qualifies Entry Of Lebanese Credit B

HEAD OF CENTRAL BANK OF ARMENIA QUALIFIES ENTRY OF LEBANESE CREDIT BANK INTO ‘ANELIK BANK’ CAPITAL AS ‘A BIG EVENT’

ArmInfo
2009-07-06 21:26:00

ArmInfo. The entry of Lebanese Credit Bank into the Armenian banking
market shows the confidence in the economic policy conducted by the
Armenian authorities, particularly, over the period of the financial
and economic crisis, as well as in the financial system of a specific
financial organization, Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA)
Artur Javadyan said during the presentation dedicated to the entry
of the Lebanese Credit Bank into the capital of "Anelik Bank". The
Lebanese Credit Bank acquired 51% of "Anelik Bank" shares. Javadyan
qualified the entry of Credit Bank as the new shareholder of "Anelik
Bank" into the Armenian financial market as "a big event in the
economic life of Armenia" and pointed out that the high level of
confidence in Armenia’s financial system is also confirmed by the
fact that the Lebanese Central Bank permitted directing his bank’s
investments to another country. "We have established warm relations
with the Lebanese Central Bank, and the response we have received about
the Credit Bank is quite positive",- Javadyan stressed. According
to him, the Lebanese Credit Bank founded in 1981 is dynamically
developing and holds the leading position in provision of certain
types of banking services. "The given bank holds its own flexible
position in the Lebanese banking system and is a brand bank", he said.

Speaking of "Anelik Bank", which has been operating for almost
20 years, Javadyan pointed out that over the difficult years of
complication of the payment communication and operation process,
Anelik has become the first payment system of Armenia to ensure
financial relations with Diaspora. He said that "Anelik Bank"
participates in over 10 international programs, cooperates with almost
all international financial structures represented in Armenia, has
a big work experience in development of small and medium business,
and has its own position in the Armenian banking system. "This is the
only bank in Armenia, which also has its branch in Russia via Anelik
RU",- Javadyan stressed. The CBA head thinks that as a result of
the two banks’ transaction, the corporate management system formed in
"Anelik Bank" will become even better, the range of the bank tools will
be expanded with the Lebanese banking market tools, and the bank’s
risk assessment system will be replenished with new procedures. "The
obligations of the given structure are growing, and we hope that in
the future it will operate in the financial market of Armenia more
aggressively, obtain big profit and make the financial services more
available for public",- Javadyan stressed and added that the CBA will
support "Anelik Bank" in every possible way.

For his part, Chairman of Board of "Anelik Bank" CJSC Samvel Chzmachian
said: "The transaction of is of a great positive importance not only
for both parts but also for the whole financial system as far as
such significant capital investment in a private transaction in the
times of world financial crisis proves trust of foreign investors to
the banking system of Armenia and Armenian entrepreneurs". Due to
the alliance of "Anelik Bank" and Lebanese Credit Bank, the bank’s
capital has grown over 2.5 times up to 14.3 billion AMD and the bank
has joined the top five banks of Armenia with its capital.

"We are glad as our development within the frames of collaboration
with Credit Bank takes a new level. We have considerate expansion
possibilities with a reliable strategic partner and now we are
joining a leading Lebanese bank with a progressive experience and
knowledge of banking. We are sure that the partnership will promote
further successful activity and will allow us to enter new markets and
expand the spectrum of banking products offered to our customers",
he added. As for the Lebanese party, Lebanon- Armenia-Russia direct
relations have been created due to the fact that "Anelik RU" branch of
"Anelik Bank" has been operating in the center of Moscow since 1992 and
has a good opportunities for development of Lebanese-Armenian banking
business. Chzmachian also added that the share of each of the bank’s
four shareholders has decreased from 25% to 12.25% (Artur Arakelyan,
Samvel Chzmachian, Galina Voronina and Armen Ghazaryan). Speaking of
possible re-branding, Chzmachian said that probably "Anelik Bank"
will preserve its brand. "Anelik is a strong brand working in over
200 well-known banks in 100 countries",- he stressed.

"The transaction with "Anelik Bank" CJSC is a unique chance for Credit
Bank to expand access to the best possibilities available on markets
of Armenia, Russia, and the CIS countries. We are glad to take these
opportunities together with the reliable and respected Armenian bank
which we have known for several years already", -said Chairman of
Credit Bank Board of Directors and General Manager Tarek Khalife.

Hakob Gasarchyan, the new chairman of "Anelik Bank" Board, who
represents the Lebanese party, said that the Armenian community of
Lebanon is of big importance for the country, and the Lebanese capital
should be directed to Armenia as well. At the same time, he expressed
confidence that the Lebanese and Armenian banking systems ave a lot of
similarities. This is proved by the fact that Armenia and Lebanon are
overcoming the consequences of the current global crisis, he stressed.

Chairman of Board of the Moscow-based "Anelik RU" Armen Ghazaryan
positively estimated the transaction of the two banks. He said
Anelik remittance system is available in 90 countries, and due to
Credit Bank its geography will be expanded in the Arab world as
well. He added that a contract on cooperation under Anelik system,
which is currently being considered by Credit Bank, will shortly be
signed. "We consider Credit Bank to be a carrier of ideas of money
transfers in the Arab world", he said.

To recall, "Anelik Bank" was founded on July 9, 1990, registered
on October 1, 1991, and provided with general licence of CBA in
October 1996.
