Turkey’s Erdogan questions Israel’s membership of UN
Middle East News

Ankara – Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday
questioned why Israel is allowed to continue to be a member of the
United Nations whilst it ignores UN resolutions to stop fighting in
Gaza, the Anadolu news agency reported.

‘How can a member which refuses to implement UN Security Council
resolutions be allowed to enter through the gates of the UN,’ Erdogan
said.

Friday’s statement was the latest in a series of harsh reactions from
Erdogan over Israel’s continued military operations in the Gaza Strip.

He earlier described the operations as a ‘humanitarian disgrace’ and a
‘stain on history’s page.’

Erdogan also urged Turks protesting Israel’s attacks to stop engaging
in anti-Semitism.

‘Anti-Semitism is a crime against humanity,’ Erdogan said,
specifically condemning one protest in the central Anatolian city of
Eskisehir where demonstrators held signs saying ‘dogs welcome, Jews
and Armenians not welcome’.

A Prisoner Of War’s Twisted Odyssey Back Home

A PRISONER OF WAR’S TWISTED ODYSSEY BACK HOME

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Shant Kenderian has been the victim of bad
timing. Really bad timing.

After immigrating to the United States in the late 1970s, Kenderian
returned to visit Iraq just in time for Saddam Hussein Enhanced
Coverage LinkingSaddam Hussein -Search using: Biographies Plus News
News, Most Recent 60 Days to invade Iran and shut the borders. And
when he finally was about to get a renewed green card to go home 10
years later, Iraq invaded Kuwait and again closed the borders.

Drafted into Saddam’s navy, Kenderian was taken prisoner of war not
long after the U.S. military launched Desert Storm.

But Kenderian finally made it back to the United States, in a
journey snaked with turns of fate, or coincidence, depending on your
view. Four people with ties to Kansas City played pivotal roles in
his homecoming. Three of them live within miles of each other in
Johnson County, Kan.

Hugh Grossman of Spring Hill, one of his POW guards, is still awed
by Kenderian’s odyssey.

"For people who need hope, it just lets you know God does watch over
us in strange ways," Grossman said.

Last week, Kenderian gathered for a reunion of sorts with his Kansas
City friends.

"It’s a very happy ending," said Kenderian, 45, now of Los Angeles. "I
used up all my bad luck in the beginning. Now I’m going on the other
side of the spectrum."

An English teacher at the American Cultural Center in Baghdad, Barbara
Stoll had to explain to the young man that no, she could not let him
take her classes for free. Besides, she said, your English is so good.

That summer of 1989, Shant Kenderian poured out his story to her. He
had immigrated to the U.S. as a 15-year-old with his mother and
brother when his parents divorced. But he needed to make peace with
the father he left behind, so he had returned.

Within days, Saddam shut the borders. Kenderian was 17. He went to
college in Baghdad to avoid military service, but after he graduated
with an engineering degree, he was drafted into Saddam’s navy.

He spent the next 3{ years fighting Iran for Saddam. When the travel
ban was lifted in 1990, Kenderian was desperate to apply for asylum
at the American Embassy in Baghdad. But punishment for a soldier’s
visit to a foreign embassy was death.

Stoll arranged for Kenderian to visit her class occasionally and have
an art exhibit for his paintings at the cultural center. Then she told
him to meet her and her husband in the market one Saturday. Daniel
Stoll was the consul officer at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad _ in
charge of issuing green cards.

"I don’t know how he got me _ there were 12 other teachers there and
none of them were married to the consul officer," said Barbara Stoll,
now living in Overland Park, Kan. "I asked him if he knew that,
and he didn’t."

Kenderian’s paperwork was almost completed when, on Aug. 2, 1990,
Saddam invaded Kuwait. Records at the U.S. Embassy were destroyed.

Kenderian again found himself in the Iraqi navy, and he came to his
life’s lowest point. His father had died within a year of Kenderian’s
return to Iraq. He had no family left there, he was witnessing the
horrors of Saddam’s regime, and he was desperate to return home.

He volunteered for duty on a landing craft that would be near the
front lines once the war began with the Americans. He knew it would
get him killed _ or captured by the Americans.

He did get captured.

Eventually Kenderian was sent to a POW camp in Saudi Arabia in 1991. He
told the guards his story _ that he was a permanent resident of the
United States and that he wanted to get home, not to Iraq.

By the time he landed in Lt. Thomas Magee’s camp, the soldiers
believed him.

Magee learned that Kenderian was a Christian of Armenian descent,
making him a minority in Iraq.

The lieutenant invited Kenderian to join the American soldiers’
Bible study. "I found it touching," said Magee, now a lieutenant
colonel who lives in Overland Park. "We were studying the Word with
a guy who was the enemy."

But Magee believed Kenderian. Why else would he expose himself to
persecution in a Muslim country by admitting that he was a Christian?

The lieutenant looked out for him and sent Kenderian’s story up the
chain of command in hope someone could help him.

Kenderian knew Staff Sgt. Hugh Grossman in the POW compound for only
10 days of his three months in captivity. But he left a deep impression
on Kenderian.

Grossman brought cigarettes to the heavy smokers in captivity. He
took pictures and would tell jokes to get Kenderian to smile. He gave
Kenderian two sweat suits to replace his prisoner jumpsuit.

And Kenderian was touched by Grossman’s understanding of difficult
experiences. Grossman was a veteran of two tours in Vietnam, a soldier
who had known a war unlike the quick victory of Desert Storm.

Kenderian worked in an administrative area as an interpreter. He
spent 16 to 18 hours a day translating, helping the soldiers pacify
the Iraqis, Grossman said.

When Kenderian was transferred to another camp, Grossman couldn’t
face him to say goodbye. The soldiers didn’t know if he’d make it
home or be turned over to the Saudis, who would send him back to Iraq,
a deep fear of Kenderian’s.

"The day he left I was crying," Grossman said. "We didn’t know what
was going to happen to him. We were afraid for him.

"It turns out, he beat me home."

When Kenderian was taken prisoner, Daniel Stoll was working at the
State Department in Washington, D.C.

He car pooled with a State employee who lamented one morning that
she was having a hard time knowing whether an Iraqi POW really had
a green card, as he and his supporters insisted.

"The more we talked, the more I suspected it was Shant," said Stoll,
who lived in Overland Park with wife Barbara and worked for the
University of Missouri-Kansas City until he took a job in Qatar
in July.

"I asked her if it was a fellow by the name of Shant Kenderian. It
turned out it was."

Since Daniel Stoll had seen Kenderian’s documents showing he had been
a legal U.S. resident, the State Department employee had evidence
she needed.

Within a couple of weeks, the U.S. military sent Kenderian home. On
the trip to America, he wore the sweat suit Grossman had given him.

Upon his return to the States, Kenderian met his wife, Ani, at
church. They have two daughters and a son. He earned a master’s and
a doctorate and is an engineer in the space industry.

Kenderian wrote a book in 2007 about his experiences, "1001 Nights in
Iraq," in which he compares his life to Job’s. His early misfortune
has been compensated for many times over, he wrote.

"He dedicated his book to his guardian angel," Barbara Stoll said. "I
don’t think there’s just one."

EDUARD SHARMAZANOV: THERE IS NO SERIOUS GROUND TO DEPRIVE ARMENIA OF VOTE IN PACE

NOYAN TAPAN

Jan 12, 2009
YEREVAN

Depriving the Armenian delegation of the vote in PACE is not in
country’s interests, but even in that case no "period of darkness"
will start in Armenia. RPA Spokesperson, NA deputy Eduard Sharmazanov
stated at the January 12 press conference. Meanwhile he considered
improbable making of such a decision in PACE expressing an opinion
that there is no serious ground for depriving Armenia of the vote.

According to E. Sharmazanov, "no one took Armenia to Europe by force,
it was our choice," and many provisions of Resolutions N 1906 and
1920 are admissible. According to him, no one but the RA authorities
is more interested in solving country’s problems, and the authorities
undertook sufficient steps to avoid possible sanctions. In his opinion,
irrespective of PACE’s decision, the authorities should continue the
reforms in all spheres.

E. Sharmazanov said that though a home political crisis emerged in
the country after the 2008 presidential elections, nevertheless the
authorities did their best to overcome the confidence deficit and to
restore public solidarity. According to him, we had both omissions and
achievements in 2008. Among the latters he mentioned the fact that for
the first time in Armenia’s reality country’s President made an address
from the National Assembly tribune touching upon not only positive, but
also vicious phenomena. E. Sharmazanov also attached importance to RA
President’s speech at the UN General Assembly, in which the necessity
to solve the Nagorno Karabakh problem in line with Artsakh people’s
interests was mentioned. E. Sharmazanov expressed satisfaction with
Armenian President’s initiative in the relations with Turkey mentioning
that "the football diplomacy" will receive its continuation this year,
as Serzh Sargsyan will leave for Turkey on a return visit for the
two countries’ football teams’ match. He reminded that Armenia is for
establishment of relations with Turkey without preconditions, but not
at the expense of the national dignity, therefore the authorities will
not renounce the policy aimed at recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Among the achievements in the economic sphere E. Sharmazanov mentioned
the end of the Iran-Armenia pipeline’s construction emphasizing
its significance for Armenia especially in the period of the "gas
war." He also attached importance to the programs of construction of
the Iran-Armenia railway, creation of an all-Armenian bank.

MENENDEZ URGES CLINTON TO REAFFIRM ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

— Asks Secretary of State-Designate to Continue
Record of Armenian Genocide Recognition During
Confirmation Hearing Viewed by Tens of Millions

— Watch Video exchange between Sen. Menendez and Sec. Of State
Designate Clinton at

WASHINGTON, DC – Speaking today during the nationally televised
Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing for the
incoming Secretary of State, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) praised
Hillary Clinton’s long record of support for Armenian Genocide
recognition and urged her to continue her principled stand on this
core human rights issue as the nation’s top diplomat, reported the
Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

"We want to thank Bob Menendez for raising the need for U.S.
recognition of the Armenian Genocide today during Sen. Clinton’s
confirmation hearing, which was watched intently by tens of
millions across the United States and around the world," said Aram
Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. "His comments, which
cited both the Secretary of State-Designate’s longstanding support
for the Armenian Genocide Resolution and President Obama’s pledge
to properly recognize the Armenian Genocide as President, reflect
the fact that the incoming Administration includes an unprecedented
number of officials with substantial track records of fighting for
the proper acknowledgement and commemoration of this crime against
humanity."

During Senate Foreign Relations Committee questioning, Sen.
Menendez stated:

"I hope that the support that you gave while you were a Senator to
the question of the Armenian Genocide, that the President-Elect has
himself supported, recognition of that. You know, if we are to say
never again, part of that is ultimately the recognition of what has
happened so that we can move forward. And I hope that you will be
an advocate of having us get off of where we have been and move
forward to a recognition of that part of history that is
universally recognized so that we can move forward in that
respect."

"And I also hope in a part of the world that’s very important to
me, on the question of reunification of Cypress, that we have
honest brokers at the State Department, at the end of the day. One
that recognizes that if Greek and Turkish Cypriots could work with
each other, they would seek a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that
could move forward and reunify the island and end the incredible
militarization of the island – the most militarized part of the
world per capita. So, I hope that you will look at those issues. I
know the positions you’ve taken as a Senator and I applaud them. I
hope that they won’t change drastically as you move to Secretary of
State."

Secretary of State Designate Clinton responded:

"Senator, we will be looking very closely at those and other
challenging issues with the eye of moving forward and being
effective in responding to these very legitimate concerns."

Video of the exchange is posted on the ANCA YouTube channel:

Pr esident-elect Obama and Vice-President-elect Biden have actively,
repeatedly, and energetically called for U.S. reaffirmation of the
Armenian Genocide during their terms in the Senate. Of President-
elect Obama’s cabinet level nominees to date, at least four,
including Secretary of State Designate Hillary Clinton, have
championed this human rights issue.

Excerpts of statements by key Obama Administration officials
regarding Armenian Genocide affirmation are provided below.

** President-elect Barack Obama: "The Armenian Genocide is not an
allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a
widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of
historical evidence. The facts are undeniable… America deserves a
leader who speaks truthfully about the Armenian Genocide and
responds forcefully to all genocides. I intend to be that
President." (1/19/08)

** Vice President-elect Joe Biden: "Recognition by the United
States of the Armenian Genocide is not the final goal. The real
goal is the recognition of Turkey – of the Turkish Government – of
the Armenian Genocide and the establishment of a common Turkish-
Armenian understanding of the events and tragedy that took place,"
stated Sen. Biden. The real goal is the recognition of Turkey, of
the Turkish Government, of the Armenian Genocide and the
establishment of a common Turkish-Armenian understanding of the
events and tragedy that took place." (7/29/08)

** Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton: "I believe the
horrible events perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against Armenians
constitute a clear case of genocide. I have twice written to
President Bush calling on him to refer to the Armenian Genocide in
his annual commemorative statement and, as President, I will
recognize the Armenian Genocide. Our common morality and our
nation’s credibility as a voice for human rights challenge us to
ensure that the Armenian Genocide be recognized and remembered by
the Congress and the President of the United States. (1/24/08)

** CIA Director-designate Leon Panetta: "April 24, 1915, signified
the beginning of a systematic attempt by the Ottoman regime to
deport and exterminate Armenians from the Anatolian Peninsula.
Over the next 8 years, 1 1/2 million Armenian people were murdered
by minions of the Ottoman Empire. Those who were spared were driven
from their homes. It is for those victims, and it is for all
oppressed peoples today, those who have died and those who
survived, that we take time to reflect on the Armenian genocide and
its implications for all of us today." (4/29/92)

** Interior Secretary-designate Ken Salazar: Cosponsor of Armenian
Genocide Resolution S.Res.106. (4/16/07)

** Labor Secretary-designate Hilda Solis: Cosponsor of Armenian
Genocide Resolution H.Res.106. (1/31/07)

** Transportation Secretary-designate Ray LaHood: Cosponsor of
Armenian Genocide Resolution H.Res.106. (8/27/07)

In addition to Administration officials, the U.S. Congress is today
led by among the most energetic and vocal advocates of American
recognition of the Armenian Genocide:

** Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi: "A grave
injustice was committed and the fact that our nation is not
officially recognizing these crimes as genocide is a
disappointment." (12/12/08)

** Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: "It truly saddens me that
after 93 years, the U.S. has failed to acknowledge the Armenian
genocide for what it was." (4/24/08)

** House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman:
"Genocide is a very powerful word, and should be reserved for only
the most horrific examples of mass killing motivated by a desire to
destroy an entire people. Without a doubt, this term is appropriate
to describe the unimaginable atrocities suffered by the Armenian
people from 1915 to 1918." (4/27/06)

** Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry:
"Acknowledging when genocide has occurred is not simply a
theoretical or legal exercise. It is key to preventing genocide
from happening again. That’s why, in my view, we must change U.S.
policy to reflect the true nature of the tragic events that were
perpetrated against the Armenians by calling them what they were:
genocide." (6/19/08)

Turkey Inches Toward Genocide Recognition

Turkey Inches Toward Genocide Recognition

by Abdulmesih BarAbrahem

Midyat, Turkey (AINA) — The head of the pro-Kurdish DTP (Demokratik
Toplum Partisi — Democratic Society Party) in Turkey, Ahmet Türk,
toured the south-east region early this week and visited the Assyrian
Cultural Association in Midyat. He was accompanied by other DTP
members of the Turkish parliament from Mardin, Diyarbakir and
Sanliurfa, Emine Ayna, Aysel Tigluk, and Ibrahim Binici. At the
Assyrian Club he met with the vice-chairman Yuhanna Aktas and other
Assyrians.

According to various Turkish news sources (AINA 12-30-2008), Türk
apologized to the Assyrians in context of the events of 1915: "Sensing
the pain of the events in our hearts, we feel that we need to
apologize. In Turkey, apology is becoming quite a fashion
recently. However, ours is something very different," he said.

Recently, a group of 200 Turkish intellectuals launched an Internet
campaign to apologize for Ottoman war crimes committed at the hand of
Turks against Armenians during World War I (AINA 12-12-2008). The
language used does not refer to the term genocide, as favored by the
victims, though it is certainly helping to erode the biggest taboo in
Turkey, as the campaign initiator Baskin Oran puts it. The language
speaks of "the great catastrophe" but Assyrians as victims — 750,000
(75%) were killed in the genocide — are not mentioned. Meanwhile at
least 25,000 Turks have signed the petition, prompting calls of
treason by Turkish nationalists and media. The Turkish Prime Minister
Mr. Erdogan himself has called the petition a "mistake" (AINA
12-18-2008).

Mr. Türk continued his statements at the Assyrian association in
Midyat with the following remarks: "We are ready to apologize for
wrong doing. This is not to reduce the importance of the events. The
events should be not brought up to the agenda by a simple apology. We
are the people of this region and soil. Our struggle is aimed to allow
people to live in brotherhood."

Closing his remarks, Mr. Türk said: "Without forgetting that Kurds
have been abused in the past to act against others, it is important
that we study the history and derive lessons. Probably we, as Kurds,
have our stake in the killing of this (cultural) richness. Today, when
we see Armenian and Assyrian brothers, and look at them, we feel
shame."

Subsequently, the DTP delegation led by Türk visited the Assyrian
monastery of St. Gabriel and met with Bishop Samuel Aktas. The
monastery has recently came under attack by neighboring Kurdish
village leaders, who are close to Erdogan’s ruling party (AKP), aiming
at grabbing monastery’s land via fabricated lawsuits (AINA
12-24-2008).

Clouded and Undifferentiated View

Mr. Türk’s apology is definitely welcomed as a gesture of friendship
by Assyrians. In fact, it is not the first time that a Kurdish leader
has apologized for Kurdish crimes committed against Assyrians during
World War I. Putting Mr. Türk’s statement in context of the Apology
Campaign of by Turkish intellectuals, it is a courageous step by a
party leader of the Turkish parliament.

In his statements, Ahmet Türk does not use the term genocide, and,
like many Kurdish nationalists, compares the "suffering" of the Kurds
in Turkey to the suffering of the Armenians and Assyrians in the past
and especially to that of World War I, saying, that "Kurds today live
the same pain." This confirms still an undifferentiated historical
view with regards to the great losses that Assyrians had during World
War I; apparently his suggested studies of history and the lessons to
be learned from that need to go further.

In an interview with BBC and CNN in November of 2008, Mr. Türk used
the word genocide for what is happening to the Kurds in Turkey, later
on emphasizing that he did not use the word to support any Armenian
claims. Triggered by protests of Collective VAN, a French-based
Armenian initiative (Vigilance against the Holocaust Denial), a press
controversy began in Turkey following the use of the term that is
still taboo in Turkey.

According to Collective VAN, Ahmet Turk is best positioned to know
what a genocide is, since he is the grand-son of one of the heads of
Hamidiye regiments (Hüseyin Kanco of Mardin), established by the
Ottoman Sultan Abdul-Hamid II in 1894; they were responsible for
perpetrating massacres against Armenians and Assyrians in the eastern
provinces. These para-military regiments consisted of Kurdish chiefs
who actively participated in the massacres against Christians in
1894/96 and again later in 1915 during the genocide unleashed by the
Young Turkish government against the Christian population.

Despite being very well informed about the reality of the genocide,
Collective VAN accuses Türk of manipulating the issue. In 2007 Ahmet
Turk complained to Turkish television because DTP was not invited to
the commemorations of Victory Day on 30/08/2007. He vehemently
criticized the decision, stressing that the Turks had obtained the
victory thanks to the Kurds — because it is "understood that the
Kurds had helped clean the Armenian people," according to Collective
VAN — and the Kurds were excluded from the festivities.

BAKU: NK solution will be based on principle of territorial integrit

AzerTac, Azerbaijan
Jan 1 2008

`NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT`S SOLUTION WILL BE BASED SOLELY ON
PRINCIPLE OF AZERBAIJAN`S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY’

Baku, January 1 (AzerTAc). `We are making efforts to achieve fair
resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh problem within
territorial integrity of Azerbaijan’ said President Ilham Aliyev in
his greeting message to the people of Azerbaijan on World Azerbaijanis
Solidarity Day and New Year.

`In 2008, the UN General Assembly adopted a very important resolution
on the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

`Despite 3 out of 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council `
Minsk Group co-chairs ` opposed this resolution, it was adopted by an
overwhelming majority of votes.

`On the one hand, it shows the strength of Azerbaijan and its
enhancing prestige. On the other hand, it proves that justice must
triumph. The global community supports Azerbaijan, and I have no doubt
that resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over
Nagorno-Karabakh will be based solely on the principle of territorial
integrity of Azerbaijan. There is no other way. The Azerbaijan state
and the people of the country will never grant independence to
Nagorno-Karabakh’ said the Head of State.
`Nagorno-Karabakh has been Azerbaijan`s land from time immemorial, and
we will make every effort to `restore’ territorial integrity of our
country.
`We can use both political, diplomatic and, if necessary, military
means. We have the right to do so. The international law guarantees
it.’ said President Ilham Aliyev.
