Mkhitaryan and the Armenian Job

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining Roma and Italy facing Armenia, Vilizar Yakimov analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the ex-Arsenal midfielder and his national team.

When Henrihk Mkhitaryan landed in Rome to complete his deadline day loan move from Arsenal, the entire idea felt like one cobbled together at the last minute in a sense of desperation.

The Armenian midfielder’s arrival in the Eternal City should add some experience and depth to the young Roma midfield that lost Daniele De Rossi this summer. However, Mkhitaryan is obviously a completely different player, so it’s worth taking a look at how the ex-Arsenal man can help their cause.

Being 30 years of age, Mkhitaryan is obviously a seasoned player with significant European experience. The fact that the Armenian international broke into the European stage at Shakhtar Donetsk should also mean that he and Paulo Fonseca should be able to establish a strong understanding.

At least in theory, the Shakhtar bond between Mkhitaryan and Fonseca should turn the midfielder into one of the pillars of this new-look Roma side and this is something the Giallorossi undoubtedly need. However, the Arsenal loanee is not the most consistent, and considering that Roma are stacked with players with similar characteristics at his position, it could create problems.

The Giallorossi can count on Javier Pastore, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicolò Zaniolo and even Bryan Cristante in a more advanced role in midfield and that’s exactly where Mkhitaryan fits best. The captain of the Armenia national team has often featured as right winger for Arsenal, but his inability to track back and limited pace showed that he cannot be efficient there week in, week out.

Cengiz Under is obviously the preferred choice at right wing, which means that Mkhitaryan could be tried on the left, where Justin Kluivert is struggling to make an impression. However, Mkhitaryan’s versatility is something that Fonseca should not play with too much, as the attacking midfielder tends to lose confidence in a Higuain-esque manner and this often results in some anonymous performances. So where should Fonseca play Mkhitaryan?

It should be noted that the Armenian could be a valuable option from the bench, as Roma would need to show some depth if they want to have a credible shot at top four finish domestically, as well as a respectable Europa League campaign. However, in order to find Mkhitaryan’s best position, Fonseca might want to take a closer look at the Armenia national team.

The former Borussia Dortmund playmaker features in a deeper position for his home country and is often involved in the build-up play, which is normal considering that Mkhitaryan is undoubtedly Armenia’s best player.

The Armenians often play a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, which seem to be the favourite set-ups of their Coach Armen Gyulbudaghyants. Playing Mkhitaryan further back gives him the opportunity to play with the ball more often and his role is key for Armenia’s transition, as the 30-year-old is often able to find another teammate in a more advanced position.

Armenia are very dangerous on the break, as although not so physical, almost all their forwards are very pacey and often exchange positions, which confuses the opposition. Again Mkhitaryan’s role in his side’s counter attacking set-up is key, as he is often the one starting the whole move from deep with a sharp pass or dribble.

The Armenians are extremely aggressive when they are playing at home, where Mkhitaryan is often able to spend more time in the opposition half than usual, which increases the danger. Considering that Thursday’s game with the Azzurri will be held at the Republican Stadium in Yerevan, Roberto Mancini’s men should probably pay special attention to the new Roma acquisition.

Armenia currently sit in third place in Group J with six points from four games, but it’s worth saying that Gyulbudaghyants’s team won their last two outings against Liechtenstein and Greece. The home defeat that the Armenians suffered against Finland by 2-0 in March showcased some of the team’s biggest weaknesses, as despite their aggression the hosts were unable to break the well-organized Scandinavian defence and logically struggled to cope with them physically.

Mancini’s Italy is obviously less physical than Finland and considering that the Azzurri will aim to dictate the tempo and attack, Armenia’s main weapons will be their counter attacks.

Aras Özbiliz, Gevorg Ghazaryan and Edgar Babayan will be the main targets for Mkhitaryan’s passes, and considering their pace it would be important for Italy not to open themselves too much when attacking. Putting their captain aside, the Armenians don’t have enough creativity to cause trouble for Italy, if the Azzurri backline are in their places.

Armenia have also struggled massively in the full back areas, so Italy’s wingers should be able to exploit that weakness. Both Federicos – Chiesa and Bernardeschi – are expected to start out wide in Mancini’s 4-3-3 formation, so if Italy manage to weather off the storm that is expected during the first minutes of the game, the Armenians should have plenty of problems in that area.

Ironically, Italian defenders need to start thinking of Mkhitaryan even before his Roma debut in Serie A. Although the role of the Armenian captain at the Capital club might not be clear yet, there is little doubt that Mkhitaryan will be the main threat for the Azzurri.

Azerbaijan is hosting regular joint military exercises. This is what military expert Van Hambardzumyan told journalists today.

According to him, these exercises are the fourth military exercises this year and pose a serious risk for Armenia. “In essence, they are the military exercises of military air forces, and Turkey is represented with its own armaments,” the expert noted, adding that Ankara is using various types of aerial and terrestrial weapons.

Hambardzumyan believes if Turkey starts concentrating its troops in the territory of Azerbaijan, Baku will most likely want to create a new military base in its territory. He reminded that 3,000 Turkish soldiers remained in Nakhichevan after the previous military exercises. “They have created a military base there and are currently there. Based on my estimates, there should be more soldiers now. Azerbaijan is very excited about this since a NATO member state with the second largest army will deploy its military bases in Azerbaijan,” the expert said.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 30, ARMENPRESS. Public zero tolerance to corruption should be formed and formulated in Armenia, and this is the political goal we are going to implement, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during the session of the Anti-Corruption Policy Council on August 30.

“It’s clear to everyone that the Armenian government has a political will to fully fight corruption, is consistent and will be consistent on this matter. When we say that we managed to eradicate the systematic corruption in Armenia, this is also seen from the public’s reaction because I saw data in this document that according to the polls conducted in May more than 84% of the Armenian citizens stated that they didn’t face corruption cases, which, is, of course, a very important record”, Pashinyan said.

However, he said that over the past one year they also faced certain institutional problems and difficulties connected with the fight against corruption.

“The fight against corruption, the investigations of corruption cases and also the restorations of damages caused by corruption are not going on with the volumes and scales we all and the public have a right to expect. There are many objective and subjective issues here, and among them the institutional problems are also very important. Some of these institutional problems are noticed from the first sight, but the second part is not noticed from the first sight, and I think that we need to be very consistent in this sense in order to strengthen the ongoing fight against corruption with the creation of some new institutional procedures”, the PM said.

Nikol Pashinyan added that during this period they have carried out quite a broad and qualified work to be orientated on anti-corruption strategy directions and fix how they imagine the future institutional development of fighting corruption.

“The political recording that is important today is that our government is going to be consistent in the fight against corruption, and here there cannot be any compromise. We have formed a political task that a public zero tolerance should be formed Armenia towards corruption, and this is the political goal we are going to implement”, he said.

Trump not taking back foreign aid; Armenia among countries to benefit

PanArmenian, Armenia
Aug 24 2019

PanARMENIAN.Net – U.S. President Donald Trump has dropped plans to take back up to $4bn allocated for foreign aid to a number countries, including Armenia, the State Department said on Friday, in the face of opposition from both sides of the aisle in Congress, News24 reports.

The president opted “not to pursue a rescission proposal for funds appropriated for the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),” a State Department official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The Office of Management and Budget wrote to State and USAID announcing a freeze for the remaining fiscal year ending September 30 on funds for programmes ranging from peacekeeping and health to anti-drug operations.

This prompted a chorus of dissent from senior Democratic and Republican lawmakers, who said in a joint letter to the president the cash was “essential to promoting US global leadership” and protecting Americans.

Speaking in Ottawa on Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo didn’t push back against proposals to cut his budget.

“What I have consistently said with respect to every penny the State Department spends, including our foreign assistance budget, is we’ve got to get it right,” Pompeo said.

“We’ve got to make sure we are using it in ways that are effective, that American interests are represented in the way we spend that money,” he added.

State spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said the department would “comply with whatever the president’s directive is”.

According to US media however, Pompeo worked behind the scenes to convince Trump to leave the money alone.

“As part of the discussions we agreed to continue to assess our programming and redirect all funding that does not directly support our priorities,” the anonymous State Department official said.

Today’s Armenia is in an ideological impasse. The current government, represented by the Prime Minister, says that they do not have “isms,” that is, they do not profess any ideology. On June 14, during the election of a new board of the Civil Contract party, he said:

“We are often called liberal or centrist, but this is a misunderstanding, because we are a party that rejected “isms,” because in the modern world there are no more stereotypical ideologies. Politically, we are not liberals, we are not centrists, we are not social democrats, we are a civic party. What does this mean in practice? This means that we put ourselves outside ideological standards and form a new ideological plane based on four key pillars: statehood, citizenship, national identity, individuality.”

The four “pillars” mentioned by the Prime Minister can become a base for the right, left, green, and nationalists, even pacifists, depending on who and how interprets these “pillars”. Simply put, pointing to the “pillars” means nothing.

Political parties that have not yet had time to recover, or those who are still showing signs of life after last year’s change of power, criticize the Prime Minister, saying that the absence of “isms” means the absence of the political line that the government should follow. There are other opinions that the current government, nevertheless, has a certain “ism,” and this is populism. Our goal is not to interfere in the debate, but to try to understand whether political ideologies have exhausted themselves, even in the form of “non-stereotypical” ones, or not.

If you look at the parties registered in the European Union, you will see that the “isms” are well represented there:

  • Liberals: Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, European People’s Party;
  • Socialists: European Christian Political Movement, European Socialist Party, European Left Party;
  • Greens: European Green Party;
  • Conservatives: European Party of Conservatives and Reformists, etc.

The list goes on: there are centrists, nationalists, Eurosceptics and many others.

By the way, without ideology, the Civil Contract party cannot decide which European party to become a part of.

Political ideologies are considered in two dimensions:

  • how should society be organized;
  • how to achieve this goal.

As we have shown, in the modern world social ideologies still exist. oreover, the lack of ideology, particularly in Europe, means the absence of ideological partners, which is problematic for Armenia. But this is another topic for discussion.

In the new round of intra-Armenian political struggle, the central debate will mainly concern the direction of the country’s development: how we imagine the form of organization of society in Armenia in the future, and how will it be achieved, that is, what will be the future state program, development paths, roadmap? If the ruling party continues to pursue a policy of rejecting “isms,” then the debate will take place without its participation, no matter how strange this situation may be.

The big step was made for the establishment of the advocacy institute. About a hundred lawyers have opted for an independent judiciary. They should be thanked.

Now it is the judges’ turn. If judges can also come together to defend their independence, this will be a huge step towards creating an independent judiciary.

Special thanks should be expressed to Nikol Pashinyan, who through his unprecedented unconstitutional actions in relation to the judicial system contributes to the creation of a legal and judicial system. This is his only promise, for the fulfillment of which he takes concrete and consistent steps.

Thanks also to Gagik Dzhangiryan and Vahe Grigoryan for blurring the clearly defined separation of “black and white,” which made people start to perceive life not emotionally-instinctively, but to judge by principles.

Bankruptcy proceedings were filed against Gagik Tsarukyan’s brandy factory

Bankruptcy proceedings were filed against Yerevan “Ararat brandy-wine-vodka combine” OJSC of PAP leader Gagik Tsarukyan.

According to Armdaily’s sources, the application was submitted by “Duff Alco Trans” LLC. The company’s lawyer, Harutyun Harutyunyan, confirmed our information, adding that the bankruptcy application has been accepted into proceedings and a temporary bankruptcy administrator has already been appointed. It is about AMD 120,000,000.

According to the lawyer, his client company has been providing cargo transportation services to “Ararat cognac-wine-vodka combine” OJSC for a long time and there has always been mutual understanding and good partnership relations between them. “Ararat cognac-wine-vodka combine” OJSC refused to pay the money after once again providing cargo transportation services, and since “Duff Alco Trans” LLC had also involved vehicles belonging to other companies in the cargo transportation process, “Duff Alco Trans” LLC, in its turn, was unable to pay them and faced serious financial problems.

According to the lawyer, according to the conviction of “Duff Alco Trans” LLC director Hayk Grigoryan, the owner of “Ararat cognac-wine-vodka combine” OJSC is not aware of this situation, otherwise he would not have allowed such a situation to develop.

Referring to the interview given by Sedrak Arustamyan to another media, as if this is all a slander, the lawyer stated that he believes that Arustamyan was given incomplete information about this issue, otherwise, he would have taken effective measures to resolve the issue, as there have always been warm partnership relations.
