JERUSALEM: Armenia’s ‘Christian Holocaust’

ARMENIA’S ‘CHRISTIAN HOLOCAUST’
By David Smith

Jerusalem Post
April 25 2008

In late August 1939, the day before his invasion of Poland, Adolf
Hitler gathered his commanders at his home and informed them he had
placed "death’s head" military formations in the east with orders
"to send to death mercilessly and without compassion men, women and
children of Polish derivation and language."

He assured his commanders the world would not long condemn them,
justifying his brutality by asking rhetorically, "Who, after all,
speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" Hitler was
referring to the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turkish
forces beginning in April 1915. Until today, the Turkish government
denies the authenticity of both Hitler’s statement and the genocide
itself.

Tel Aviv University professor Israel Charny, chief editor of the
Encyclopedia of Genocide, insists the statement was recorded by "an
indisputably serious" Associated Press correspondent, and that other
remarks were made by Hitler that "confirm that the Armenian genocide
was an active guiding concept in the monster’s mind."

Kevork Kahvedjian, son of Jerusalem photographer and Armenian genocide
survivor Elia Kahvedjian, explains his father was personal testimony
to the genocide and its savagery. "When it started, he was only five
years old, but he remembered it very clearly. Especially the last
year of his life he remembered it…" Kevork continually slipped
into the first person while recounting his father’s story, as if it
had happened to him: "I used to see lots of dead people, piles of
them. Some had been burned. Until today I remember the smell of burned
flesh," he narrated, detailing the death march through the desert.

He remembered the sound of the German cannons pounding the city, then
a lull of about a month before the Turkish soldiers entered his home
and took Elia, his mother, a sister and two brothers – one brother
was just a few months old. Two older brothers had already been hanged.

"Soldiers came and started pushing my mother. She tried to go back
to the house but the soldiers hit her with rifle butts and she had
to take the children and start walking." The Armenians were allowed
only what they could carry. They walked for weeks through the desert
of Deir Zor with soldiers on both sides. The soldiers offered neither
food nor water, but the prisoners ate some plants and drank brackish
water on the way.

After weeks of carrying her six-month-old baby, Elia’s mother,
exhausted, set the infant in the shade of a tree and abandoned him,
hoping some kind person would find him. The older sister, about 12
years old during the march, was abducted. Elia found her 18 years
later and discovered she had been forced to serve in a harem.

In a wadi, near the end of the trek, "I heard my mother say, ‘Today,
I think they’re going to kill us.’" It happened that that a Kurd
was passing by. She called the Kurd and told him, "Take this boy and
go." The Kurd took Elia and the boy remembered, "At the top of the
hill we turned around and saw the soldiers killing everyone." The
Kurd took Elia, burned his clothes, gave him medicine for dysentery,
and sold him to a blacksmith, who eventually sent him away. Elia
sought refuge in a Syrian convent. In 1918, when the war was over, the
American Near East Relief Foundation began to gather Armenian orphans
and distribute them in its orphanages throughout the Middle East.

Elia was transferred to Lebanon, then to Nazareth in 1920. There,
one of the teachers was a photographer and Elia worked for him. Elia
learned the photography trade and became a prominent photographer. Many
beloved pictures of early 20th-century Jerusalem were taken by Elia;
the album, Through My Father’s Eyes, celebrates his work.

Turkish authorities strive to discredit accounts such as Elia’s,
although his testimony is confirmed by an abundance of contemporary
journalism, eyewitness accounts by statesmen such as American
ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau, as well as German
and Austrian documentation.

Charny claims there was "most certainly" a religious element in
the persecution of the Armenians, the first empire to embrace the
faith. (Armenia officially adopted Christianity as the state religion
in 301 CE, about 25 years before the Roman Empire did so.) "There are
even some who want to refer to this period overall as ‘The Christian
Genocide,’ because the victims of the Turks’ genocide were not
only Armenians but also Assyrians and Greeks," he explains. Still,
he is reticent to use that term as it "could seem to remove from
the Armenian community their hard-won gains for recognition of the
genocide of their people."

According to Charney, "What stands out about the denials of the
Armenian genocide is that for many years, the full power of the
Turkish government has been devoted to denials of the genocide. Turkey
literally spends millions on advertising agencies and on publicity
efforts. It also throws the considerable weight of its government
behind coercing denials from other countries, with threats to the
United States of not allowing American military planes to use Turkish
air space or threatening to pull out of joint NATO military exercises,
as well as with threats of major economic retaliation should or when a
country, such as France, confirms recognition of the Armenian genocide.

"Israel is regularly the object of threats by the Turks and,
regrettably to say the least, for many years has kowtowed to these
threats. But then too so has the stronger United States"

MK Haim Oron (Meretz) proposed in March that the Knesset appoint a
committee to consider recognizing the Armenian genocide, adding,
"It is unacceptable that the Jewish people is not making itself
heard." Although the measure passed, MK Shalom Simhon (Likud)
responded, "this has become a politically charged issue between
Armenians and Turks, and Israel is not interested in taking sides."

Many Israelis are eager for their country to recognize the
genocide. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem will hold an event titled
"A Symposium in Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide" at its Givat
Ram campus on April 29 at 6:30 p.m. Both Kevork Kahvedjian and Charney
will speak.

Israel will eventually recognize the genocide, insists Kevork, who
manages his father’s business, Elia Photo Service, in Jerusalem’s
Old City. Kevork, named for the baby left under a tree in the desert,
believes, "One day they are going to say, ‘Yes, it happened.’ If not
now, then in 50 years!"

Otherwise, Armenians worry, states that refuse to recognize the
genocide risk rendering Hitler’s rhetorical question a reality.

Turkey "Slams" Argentinean Statement On Armenian Genocide

TURKEY "SLAMS" ARGENTINEAN STATEMENT ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

PanARMENIAN.Net
26.04.2008 14:27 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Friday
necessary initiatives were underway pertaining to the Argentinean
Senate’s statement on the Armenian Genocide.

"The Argentine Senate has approved a new text supporting the baseless
Armenian allegations…

(which) we strongly condemn and fully reject," the Foreign Ministry
said.

Turkish State Minister Mehmet Aydin cancelled his visit to Argentina
following this adoption of the resolution.

Aydin was scheduled to travel to Buenos Aires on April 28-29 for a
gathering of the UN-sponsored Alliance of Civilizations initiative,
which aims to foster dialogue between Islamic and Western societies
and is co-chaired by Spain and Turkey.

"Decision of the Argentina Senate contradicts historical facts and
violates principles of international law," Turkish Foreign Ministry
spokesman said, the Anatolian Agency reported.

AAA: ARMENIAN GENOCIDE DENIAL RESULTED IN HOLOCAUST AND OTHER GENOCIDES

PanARMENIAN.Net
24.04.2008 14:41 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The world has changed the attitude about the
Armenian Genocide during the past 20-30 years, said Armenian Assembly
of America Regional Director for Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.

"Denial of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire resulted in
the Holocaust and genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur,"Arpi
Vartanian told reporters today.

"Our work should aim at international condemnation of genocide as
a phenomenon. As to the U.S. President’s annual April 24 statement,
George W. Bush is unlikely to use term ‘genocide’ instead of ‘tragic
events’. We could stand a better chance if the House of Representatives
had passed the Armenian Genocide Resolution. However, presently, the
Resolution is co-sponsored by 211 Congressmen against 218 needed. We
do work with the U.S. lawmakers while the Turkish lobby uses blackmail
and bribe-giving. But we do not lose hope," Ms. Vartanian said.

At Present Process Of Recognition And Condemnation Of Armenian Genoc

AT PRESENT PROCESS OF RECOGNITION AND CONDEMNATION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IS AT STAGE OF "FROM RECOGNITION TO RECOVERY" ASHOT MELKONIAN CONSIDERS

Noyan Tapan
April 23, 2008

YEREVAN, APRIL 23, NOYAN TAPAN. At present the process of recognition
and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide is in the legal-political
field "from recognition to recovery." Ashot Melkonian, the Director
of the History Institute of the RA National Academy of Sciences,
expressed such an opinion at the April 23 press conference. According
to him, we should pass much more "stony, difficult way" to complete
this stage of the process. According to A. Melkonian, the court is
to determine the amount of the damage of the Armenian people and the
form of recovery. "A tragedy happened, the world admits it, but the
world should not satisfy itself with only providing moral assistance,"
A. Melkonian said.

The historian also mentioned that the Armenian Genocide is a
"classical" example of genocide. However, according to A. Melkonian,
in difference to the Jewish Holocaust, the Armenians were slaughtered
just in their homeland, in Western Armenia. "Here we have a problem
of not only a genocide, but also a problem of deprivation of homeland,
to which we should pay attention," he said. In A. Melkonian’s opinion,
in case of depriving of homeland it is impossible to speak about
only material recovery, as it is difficult to turn into material
units the 2500 villages, 66 towns, 1350 churches, etc. the Western
Armenians lost.

Armenia To Reconsider Amendments Toughening Law On Rallies

ARMENIA TO RECONSIDER AMENDMENTS TOUGHENING LAW ON RALLIES

Interfax, Russia
April 22 2008

Armenia will reconsider amendments to the law on rallies, processions,
demonstrations, and assemblies, which were made after the March 1,
2008, unrest in Yerevan, David Arutyunian, the head of the Armenian
delegation to PACE, said at a press conference in Yerevan on Tuesday.

"It is unclear whether the parliament will return to the original
version of the law, but what is certain is that the parliamentarians
will take into consideration the Council of Europe Venice Commission’s
recommendations and take appropriate steps," Arutyunian said.

PACE passed a resolution on April 17 in which it called for "the
immediate opening of an independent inquiry into the events of 1
March (which resulted in 10 people killed and 200 injured), the urgent
release of the persons detained on seemingly artificial and politically
motivated charges and the revocation of the amendments recently
adopted by the National Assembly to the Law on conducting meetings,
assemblies, rallies and demonstrations, with immediate effect."

Today.Az, Azerbaijan
April 19 2008

Heydar Jemal: "The Kremlin provides direct support to the unrecognized regime of Nagorno Karabakh and it is only left to make an official statement"

19 April 2008 [12:40] – Today.Az

Day.Az interview with famous Russian political scientist, chairman
of Islamic Committee of Russia Heydar Jemal.

-The Kremlin has decided to establish official ties with de
facto powers of the self-declared republics of South Ossetia and
Abkhazia. What do you think Moscow intends to do?

-Russia has no balanced policy both in the post-Soviet area and in the
international arena. The actions of Russian authorities are impulsive
-a large circle settles its own tasks not connected with national
interests. The latter is ready to betray Russia in the international
arena. A certain group within the leadership demonstrates to the
world society that the ruling regime does not cope with its tasks.

This discredits the Kremlin so that those responsible for this policy
were obliged to give their place to this ambitious group. Its members
are ready to undertake any actions in support Abkhazia and South
Ossetia despite agreements of the Kremlin, which could have existed
with Washington or Tbilisi in the past.

As there is no unity in the Russian government, its actions are
unpredictable.

-How far,you think, Moscow will go in its "games" with the unrecognized
formations in the post Soviet area?

-Recognition of separatist regimes by Moscow is quite real. Such
script is possible due to the counteraction between the clans within
the leadership. Various groupings may involve the Kremlin for their
ambitious purposes until its initiation of an armed confrontation
with Georgia.

-Analysts state that Moscow’s "knight’s tour" is aimed to prevent
Georgia from accession to NATO…

-This motivation is intended for a certain circle of political class,
experts and others.

It is obvious than in case of armed confrontation with Georgia, Moscow
will be perceived inadequately from the point of view of external
policy, which can not be said about Tbilisi’s accession to NATO as
Georgia will be immediately supported by the United States and NATO,
which will lead to presence of their armed forces near Russia. This
is even worse than Georgia’s accession to the Alliance.

In fact, Russian authorities do not care of Georgia’s accession to
NATO. Today, the deteriorated relations with Georgia is a bargaining
chip in the internal political conflict in the Kremlin.

-It is no secret that relations between Moscow and Baku are not on
a high level. Azerbaijan, like Georgia, has a territorial problem,
in particular, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Do you think the Kremlin
might apply the Georgian script to Baku?

-Anyway, Russia supports Armenia in Nagorno Karabakh conflict both in
the political and military spheres. A group of force supporters try to
preserve their positions in the Kremlin and are ready to raise tensions
both within Russia and in the post-Soviet area. The more tense the
situation on the Russian borders is, the stronger is their position.

The Kremlin provides direct support to the unrecognized regime of
Nagorno Karabakh. It is only left to make an official statement.
