Health Camp in Armenia Encourages People to Change Their Life for the Better

Adventist Review
Sept 30 2021

In Ankavan, a resort village in Armenia in the picturesque valley of the Marmarik River, the health department of the Armenian Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church recently organized a health camp. It was attended by more than 140 people, including health ministries directors of local churches across the Armenian Mission, pastors, church members, and friends who are not members of the church.

The camp meeting was preceded by a two-month healthy lifestyle course organized by Armenian Mission health ministries director Samuel Sargsyan. It was geared to interested church members, including pastors and health ministries directors of local churches.

From May 12 to July 12, 2021, more than 20 speakers from nine countries taught 45 students about spiritual principles and health medical topics. The final stage of training took place at the camp meeting.

“From the very first day of the camp meeting to the last, we felt God’s presence,” organizers said. They put together a varied program that included morning and evening services. It also offered seminars on healthy lifestyles, prevention and treatment of diseases, and first aid. Participants could arrange consultations with physicians and enjoy activities such as trips to a nearby hot springs, massages, Nordic walking classes, and therapeutic gymnastics. In the mornings, together with a Nordic walking instructor, participants had the opportunity to climb a nearby hill and enjoy the views from the top.

Every day, chefs prepared a variety of new dishes of vegetarian cuisine. Many attendees acknowledged they were trying those dishes for the first time. “Everything was delicious and attractive,” participants said.

Especially inspiring were the morning and evening services, they added. In the morning meetings, participants reflected on what the Bible says about health and one’s attitude toward it. In the evenings, attendees met in the main hall for joint worship, singing, and games.

Evening meetings were devoted to the theme “God calls you.” It was based on the example of Bible heroes who responded to God’s call. Camp participants and pastors pondered how to understand what God is calling His people to do, how to begin to act in accordance with God’s calling, and what is necessary to avoid turning away from the chosen path.

On Saturday (Sabbath), organizers held a baptismal service in the Marmarik River. Four people made a covenant with the Lord, including a student of the healthy lifestyle course.

Saturday night’s meeting was no less solemn. The baptized individuals accepted congratulations and gifts, and every camp meeting attendee received a completion certificate. Participants who are not members of the Adventist Church also received a copy of the book Keys to Health as a special gift.

On Sunday, the camp held a health exhibition. At the beginning of the program, instructors acquainted guests with the eight basic principles of a healthy lifestyle, conducted a number of medical examinations, and helped people determine their biological age. Participants had the opportunity to consult with doctors, who gave practical recommendations for changing their lifestyles.

“The time spent at the camp flew by very quickly and left warm memories,” organizers said, “but we hope that camp participants will continue to lead a healthy lifestyle, applying the knowledge they have received.”

Organizers also said that everyone — health department directors, healthy life course students, and pastors — presented the message of a healthy lifestyle and the message of salvation as a single team. “It was an incredible blessing for every camp participant,” they said.

Armenian opposition MPs boycott debates on community merger bill

Panorama, Armenia
Sept 24 2021

Lawmakers from the two opposition factions in the Armenian parliament on Friday decided to boycott a parliament sitting in protest against a government-drafted bill that would merge many cities and villages into bigger communities.

The bill proposes amendments to the laws “On Administrative-Territorial Division of the Republic of Armenia” and “On Local Self-Government”.

Ahead of the debates, Armenia faction secretary Artsvik Minasyan stated the draft law runs counter to Armenia’s Constitution and the decision of the Constitutional Court.

He said the opposition would ask the president to challenge its legality in the top court.

The opposition MP also blamed the government for setting “wrong priorities” amid the security challenges facing the country.

“For 12 days already, we have demanded a discussion with the participation of the National Security Service director, foreign and defense ministers and other senior officials. These days we are seeing a tense border situation, not only ‘flirting’ with Erdogan, but also Aliyev’s latest statements clearly indicate that we are dealing with security issues that are a priority for our state,” the MP said.

Minasyan announced his faction’s decision not to take part in the “illegal” debates.

Secretary of the I’m Honored faction Hayk Mamijanyan also joined the Armenia faction in boycotting the debates, claiming the bill on new administrative units is “politically motivated” and is actually aimed at removing “undesirable” local government officials from office.

Afterwards, the opposition lawmakers left the parliament sessions hall.

Armenia’s Byurakan Observatory plans to establish science base in Nagorno-Karabakh

News.am, Armenia
Sept 22 2021

Armenia’s Byurakan Observatory plans to establish a science base in Nagorno-Karabakh. This is what President of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Armenia Ashot Saghyan said during today’s session of the NAS that was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Byurakan Observatory.

Saghyan said this will provide young scientists from Nagorno-Karabakh with the opportunity to become familiar with celestial objects and stated that Byurakan Observatory is a center for astrology in the region.

Saghyan also recalled that the digital version of the research conducted at Byurakan Observatory is included in the list of the UNESCO with spectra of 20,000,000 objects. “The Observatory stood out with its international reputation and always had close ties in the international arena. It is of major scientific, social and cultural significance for the young generation,” he added.

Deceased Armenian officer’s daughter: Pashinyan is causing relatives of the fallen servicemen pain again

News.am, Armenia
Sept 17 2021

I don’t think he truly wants to celebrate the day of independence, and he is simply telling us that in order to cause us relatives of the deceased servicemen pain again and show that we elected him after he killed our relatives and that he will do it again. This is what Margarita Petrosyan, daughter of Captain Ishkhan Petrosyan who fell in the 44-day war in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), said during a meeting held by the relatives of deceased servicemen at Republic Square in Yerevan, touching upon the organizing of a festive event on Independence Day and the fact that Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan used the words “vivid celebration” to describe the event.

“We Armenians are not independent now. We are dependent on the Turks. We are not living in the future that he told us we would have. I don’t understand his actions and the silence of the parents and relatives. The authorities won’t take our words into consideration since they’re preparing to hold the event, and they will. Even if we go to Yerablur Military Pantheon to be with our sons, they will hold the event. If we had won the war and hadn’t lost the lands, I think it would be necessary to celebrate the boys’ victory, but what can we celebrate now? We lost Artsakh and are only left with Yerevan. Where are the people who were rejecting the former authorities? We are losing our country,” the daughter of the deceased officer said.

Azerbaijan Threatens Bodily Security of POWs and Cultural Security of Christian Landmarks

Sept 10 2021

09/10/2021 Nagorno-Karabakh (International Christian Concern) –  Though a ceasefire was signed 10 months ago after a 44-day war, Azerbaijan continues to persecute Armenians, particularly Prisoners of War (POWs). Two Armenian POWs were released on September 7 by Azerbaijan after the soldiers went missing near the border in July. In exchange, Armenia released an Azerbaijani serviceman who was arrested in Nagorno-Karabakh at the end of August.

Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan spoke at a press conference regarding the POW exchange, commented on the brutality of the Azerbaijani military against the Armenians held captive. Ombudsman Tatoyan specifically mentioned the religious freedom violations committed when the crosses of Armenians were taken away forcefully. They attempted to coerce them away from their Armenian heritage by making anti-Armenian and pro-Azeri comments.

Tatoyan also outlined the harsh physical and psychological torture they endured, including the withholding of food and medical care. There were reports of food being tossed on the ground to be eaten or Armenian POWs only having 10 seconds to eat before the rest would be thrown away. Azerbaijani servicemen also would press on wounds until prisoners begged for food or medical care and in some instances, the POWs then faced humiliation in public hospitals. In a particularly gruesome case, one POW was stripped naked and had servicemen pour boiling water on his body and was subsequently beaten, leaving him unable to walk for 21 days.

In addition to threatening the bodily safety of Armenians, Azerbaijan also threatens the countries heritage and Christian values. According to Caucasus Heritage Watch, more than a dozen Armenian churches, cemeteries, cross-stones (Armenian: khachkars), and other cultural sites have been destroyed, damaged, or threatened by Azerbaijan. The majority of the incidents occurred after the ceasefire and take place on land previously inhabited by Armenians before the war. Sushi and its surrounding area and the southern portion of Nagorno-Karabakh have suffered the majority of desecration. Particularly in the south where new roads are being established, Armenian cemeteries are threatened.

Senator Portantino garners additional $1.8m in state funds for Armenian American Museum in Glendale

Public Radio of Armenia
Sept 14 2021

“I am thrilled to secure additional funds to keep the museum’s positive momentum going for this important cultural center in Glendale,” stated Senator Portantino. “The landmark museum will impact and inspire generations to come.  This is an investment that represents our shared vision with the Armenian American community.  I am pleased to be in a position to help make it a reality and very grateful to our Senate Leadership and the Governor for supporting this educational investment that will benefit California for decades.”

Earlier this year, the Armenian American Museum celebrated its groundbreaking during a ceremony at the future site of the museum, with over 1000 guests who marked the beginning of construction of the landmark center.  Senator Portantino was honored to attend and provide remarks during the event.

“We are incredibly grateful to Senator Anthony Portantino for his unwavering support of the Armenian American Museum,” stated Berdj Karapetian, Executive Chairman of the Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California.  “It is an exciting time for the project as we celebrated the historic groundbreaking with the entire community and now have commenced construction at the future site of the museum.  Senator Portantino’s efforts to secure additional funding and the State of California’s continued commitment and partnership will help bring to reality a landmark center that will be the pride of our Jewel City and Golden State.”

Senator Portantino has been an ardent supporter and a champion for the Armenian American museum.  He has helped secure millions in state funds in support of the project.

In 2019, Senator Portantino initiated a meeting between Governor Gavin Newsom’s team and museum leadership that helped the project reach a historic milestone.  Following the successful meeting and tour of the cultural center’s future site by his Legislative Secretary, the Governor renewed his support for the project by including $5 million in the 2019-2020 State Budget for the Armenian American Museum.

An initial $1 million grant for the project was approved as part of the 2016-2017 State budget. In his first term, Senator Portantino successfully secured $3 million for the museum, which was approved in the 2017-2018 budget.  The additional funds in this year’s budget brings the total state investment in the Museum to $9.8 million.

The Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California is located in heart of Glendale and seeks to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Armenian American experience.  Ten Armenian American cultural, philanthropic, and religious non-profit institutions are represented on the museum’s board.
