Azerbaijan convicts blogger Lapshin to 3 years in prison for traveling
to Karabakh

BAKU. July 20

The Baku Court on Grave Crimes on Thursday found prominent blogger
Alexander Lapshin, a citizen of Russia and Israel, guilty of illegally
visiting Nagorno-Karabakh and sentenced him to three years in a
general security penitentiary, an Interfax correspondent reported from
the courtroom.

The prosecution had asked the court to sentence Lapshin to six years
and six months in prison last Friday.

Delivering his last plea, Lapshin regretted his visit to
Nagorno-Karabakh without Baku's consent. "I have to apologize to the
Azerbaijani people only because my actions caused their moral
sufferings. I understand how much Nagorno-Karabakh is important to
Azerbaijan. I have never established any criminal links with the
Armenian government," Lapshin said.

He said he hoped the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over
Nagorno-Karabakh would be settled through preserving Azerbaijan's
integrity.

Lapshin's lawyer Eduard Chernin asked the court to acquit his client.

During the proceedings, Lapshin pleaded not guilty of the charges
brought against him and said that Nagorno-Karabakh is Azerbaijan's
territory. He said he had traveled to Nagorno-Karabakh for purely
touristic purposes and his trips did not have any political agenda.

According to Baku, Lapshin, a Russian-Israeli citizen, illegally
visited Nagorno-Karabakh without obtaining Azerbaijan's official
permission in April 2011 and October 2012, thus violating the laws on
Azerbaijan's state border and on passports. Apart from that, Lapshin
called for the recognition of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic on social networks on April 6, 2016 and June 29, 2016.

Lapshin was put on the 'black list' for having visited
Nagorno-Karabakh without the consent of Azeri authorities. Such people
cannot enter Azerbaijan. However, Lapshin was able to enter Azerbaijan
through Georgia in June 2015, producing a Ukrainian passport with a
different spelling of his name.

The investigative department for grave crimes of the Azerbaijani
Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case on charges of
repeated public calls against the state and illegal crossing of
Azerbaijan's state border. A person convicted of these charges may
receive a sentence of five to eight years in prison.

On December 16, 2016 it emerged that Lapshin had been detained in
Belarus at the request of Azerbaijan.

The Belarusian Supreme Court rejected Lapshin's appeal against his
extradition to Azerbaijan on February 7. He was extradited on the same
day.

Artsakh's military will always remain in the country, Armenian top
lawmaker's response to Cavusoglu's "ludicrous" statement

YEREVAN, JULY 19, ARMENPRESS. During a press briefing today,
Vice-Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov touched upon
Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusolgu’s statement regarding the “withdrawal of
Armenian forces from Artsakh”.

Sharmazanov particularly said: “A state which has openly supported and
is supporting the terrorist policy of Azerbaijan has nothing to do in
the settlement issue of the Artsakh conflict. The Artsakhi military
will always remain in Artsakh for one simple reason: it must defend
the peace of its holy and free country. And one more thing, it is
ridiculous when an occupier speaks about the peaceful solution of a
problem. Free Cyprus from your occupying presence instead of making
ludicrous calls”.

Armenian army sufficiently equipped to accomplish combat missions -
Armenian president

 YEREVAN. July 14

The Armenian army is sufficiently equipped to accomplish its missions,
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said.

"There is no doubt that our army has been strengthening day after day.
New weapons, types of armaments are being procured. The level of our
equipment is satisfactory and sufficient for the accomplishment of any
combat missions the army may have," Sargsyan said at public hearings
on a number of programs under the Army-Nation concept.

However, the man is the principal force on the battlefield, he said.

"Every battle and war victorious or lucky for us has been won thanks
to the human factor, in the first turn. Sufficient quantities and
quality of weapons and ammunition plus smart and determined fighters
are the token of success, which I have no doubt about," Sargsyan said.

Music: Eduard Topchjan: “The “Armenia” Festival and Competition was the result of our unity”

Panorama, Armenia

The “Armenia” International Festival and Competition launched on July 4 with the performance of the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra headed by conductor Eduard Topchjan. Maestro Topchjan told Panorama.am that he highly appreciates the cooperation with the organizers of the “Armenia” Festival and Competition, particularly with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia.

“We have done with Sergey Smbatyan what we should have done long time ago – we would have been together. I am very happy for this and since that it will continue this way. We have lots of projects, thinking about many things and this is amazin.! We are thinking about the future Armenian musicians, about the quality of the education. It is easier being together. I think that first of all the “Armenia” Festival and Competition was the result of our unity. Sergey Smbatyan invited us to participate in the “Armenia” Festival and Competition and I agreed as a sign of close friendship. I highly appreciate the fact that the Youth Orchestra managed to gather the Armenian orchestra’s (Philharmonic, Chamber, Youth). They were together during the festival, which is amazing. I was thinking what was the problem that this had not happened so far. Now the important thing is that everything is all right,” Eduard Topchjan noted.

The Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra noted that today, Armenia is a little bit left out of the world music. “Although all of us have done something during these years. Famous musicians arrived in Armenia, loved Armenia. Both Youth and Philharmonic orchestras did great job. Numerous festivals are held in Armenia at a high level. Very good musicians participated in the “Armenia” Festival and Competition. Maxim Vengerov performed at the closing concert.

All of this certainly contributes to our ability to enter into that basic movement. I remember that a few years ago nobody from classical sphere knew where the Armenia was on the map. Now many know where our country is, however we have to work harder to achieve a solid place. And all of these must be done systematically. Even if there are separate initiatives, everyone should serve for a purpose to make Armenia's name mean something in the classical music world. In that case, the musicians of Armenia will benefit.”

48 pianists from 14 countries participated in the first “Armenia” International Competition. The geography of the participants is very wide and Eduard Topchjan highly appreciates it.

To note, this year Topchjan was one of the jury members of the Khachaturian International Competition. Maestro Topchjan noted that he was part of the exceptional jury with Isabel Bayrakdarian, John Fisher, Richard Rodzinsky, Mark Hildrew, etc.

“Tastes are different in music. But it seems to me that music can be distinguished: it can be very well, good, extraordinary, average. I was convinced once again that during the competitions the highest-level specialist looks at everything with his own prism, from his point of view. As a member of the jury, I noticed that everything was really neutral, and everyone did the way he thought. Interestingly, no one's opinion was affected by another. The jury had disagreements, which, undoubtedly, was normal,” Maestro Topchjan said.

To remind, the organizers of the 1st “Armenia” International Festival and Competition, held in Yerevan from July 4 to July 12, were the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and European Foundation for Support of Culture. It was held with the support of the Armenian Ministry of Culture and under the high patronage of the first lady of Armenia Rita Sargsyan.

48 pianists from 14 countries participated in the competition, with he best 5 pianists getting a chance to compete in Malta International Piano Competition in 2018. This competition has the biggest prize fond in the world (200 000 Euro). It should be noted that world famous stars Maxim Vengerov, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Roman Kim, Nareh Arghamanyan and others performed within the framework of the “Armenia” International Festival.

Music: First Armenia International Music Competition winners named

Panorama, Armenia

The winners of the first Armenia International Music Competition were announced on Wednesday, the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia told Panorama.am.

The first prize winner is Hripsime Ahgakaryan (Armenia), the second prize winner is Khachik Andreasyan (Armenia), the third prize winner is Dominik Wizjan (Poland), as well as the special prize winner is Seolhwa Kim (South Korea). Besides the winners, two more participants were granted vouchers of participation for Malta International Piano Competition in April 2018.

The chairman of jury Armen Babakhanyan mentioned, that their expectations were fulfilled. “I’m satisfied with the results. I was among the jurors of many competitions, but this group of jury was different: their work, their approach to every contestant was unique. Our opinions about performers coincided in 95% occasions. Our choice of the winner was consentaneous and that was a fantastic result. The jurors were the representatives of different schools. Despite this they were judging the performances according to their professionalism,” said Mr. Babakhanyan.

Kostantin Ishkhanov, the president of the European Foundation for Support of Culture, thinks that the competition was held at a very high level. “I’m very glad that such famous artists came to Armenia and performed here. The best 5 participants of the competition will have an opportunity to go to Malta and to take part in the Piano competition, in 2018. The prize fund is quite tangible – a hundred thousand Euros for the First Prize and the total prize fund is two hundred thousand Euros. I hope that the participants of Armenian competition will do their best in Malta.”

The organizers of the 1st “Armenia” International Festival and Competition are the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and European Foundation for Support of Culture. It is held with the support of the Armenian Ministry of Culture. The event is held under the high patronage of the first lady of Armenia Rita Sargsyan.

The competition-festival will be closed by a concert of world famous violinist Maxim Vengerov and State Youth Orchestra of Armenia this evening.

Music: They Choose Their Own Adventures; Double bill pairs fearless artists unbound by time, space or genre

They Choose Their Own Adventures; Double bill pairs fearless artists
unbound by time, space or genre

by T'CHA DUNLEVY, The Gazette

"It's really important to know where your roots are," Tigran Hamasyan
said Tuesday morning. On the phone from a beach in Italy, where he was
vacationing with his wife, the fearless jazz pianist was talking about
his deep connection to his Armenian heritage, but also about what he
sees as an essential human value.

"I grew up in Armenia until I was 16," the 29-year-old continued. "I
wish that people were more interested in where they come from so they
can understand what to do in their lives. Except for your mother and
father, what else is in your genes that you might not know about
something that can influence you, that is your path, that you can
check out and know about? This is something very important for me."

Hamasyan continues to explore his genes and century-spanning musical
genealogy on the new album An Ancient Observer. He will perform
material from it on an intriguing double bill Saturday at the
sonically pristine Maison symphonique as part of the Montreal
International Jazz Festival.

He anchors an evening led off by Montreal saxophone monster Colin
Stetson, whose primal-meetsfuturistic one-man symphonies keep pushing
the limits of what you thought was possible with a woodwind on his
latest solo offering, All This I Do for Glory.

As a prelude to the gargantuan tête-à-tête, I touched base with both
men to get their thoughts on heritage, musical boundaries and creative
control.

Hamasyan has found himself in all kinds of situations since shaking up
the piano landscape by winning first prize at the Thelonious Monk
Institute of Jazz competition in 2006. He broke through with his
breathtaking 2011 Verve debut, A Fable, teamed up with
Armenian-American hard-rocker Serj Tankian of System of a Down on the
latter's 2013 side project, Jazz-iz Christ, and let loose in a group
setting on his own turbocharged 2015 album, Mockroot.

Influenced by everything from prog rock and heavy metal to classical
and the rich history of Armenian folk music, he sees musical divisions
as unnecessary distractions.

"I'm open to any style," Hamasyan said. "I don't limit myself to say I
only like jazz or classical. I like all kinds of music. I like to
dedicate myself to projects. I ask myself, 'This specific project I'm
doing, what is it?'"For me, the most important thing is to choose a
repertoire. For example, is it a trio record? Certain songs might need
something powerful, more of a thrash-rock sound rather than a jazz
kit. I have a lot of electronic sounds mixed with acoustic piano
sounds. The most important thing is the content of what you're
writing. ... (The connection) is the composition and the idea of
improvisation within these genres."

On first listen, the disparate sounds of An Ancient Observer seem most
informed by classical music, but nearly every song contains flourishes
of other styles, from the soulful vocal incantations and cascading
piano runs on The Cave of Rebirth to the jazzy mischief and beat-box
scatting of Nairian Odyssey and the palatecleansing interludes New
Baroque 1 and 2. Hamasyan brings it all together.

"I like to write music, then sit down and explore the ideology of it,
and make it into a story," he said, "which in this case is the
connection of time and the eternal. What's passing and what is
important in life - the idea of creation. Humans were made to create.
God created us so we can also create. So in other words, loving what
you do and knowing what you really want to do is very important."

Stetson also enjoys a good yarn.

While the thrilling sounds on All This I Do for Glory contain no
lyrics, the album and song titles (Like Wolves on the Fold, Between
Water and Wind) hint at a mythological subtext to which the performer
is not averse.

"I tend to use pretty large language and grandiose, sweeping (titles)
because I find it's necessary for those things to meet the music
halfway," Stetson said. "This record and the next I think of as a bit
of an origin story. It's the first of a two-part character study. The
first part is (about a man) who is part of this couple, who has this
unrequited dream of regaining his former glory or some semblance of
what he imagines that would be. It's like a life overrun by the
fantasies of ambition."

Stetson also used a narrative backdrop with his partner, violinist
Sarah Neufeld (who, in addition to her solo career, is known for her
work with Arcade Fire), on their collaborative 2015 album, Never Were
the Way She Was.

Here it's the launch pad for the saxophonist to delve into the
dramatic aural environments that have become his trademark: furious
whirlwinds of sound propelled by his circular breathing technique; use
of repetition and elaboration on a theme; driving percussive elements
consisting of his carefully miked fingers hitting the pads of his
instrument; and, when the feeling hits, him singing plaintively into
his saxophone while he plays.

"Purely from a mechanical standpoint, it's much more percussive in an
almost modern sense," Stetson said of the album. "It's drawing on
things like electronic music and dance music. ... In character, I
think there's this boastful ambition to it, with a strain of
self-aware doubt. I really wanted to imbue this one with fragility."

If you're looking to categorize what Stetson does, don't. Though
trained in classical and with some background in jazz improvisation,
the musician who has worked with Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed,
Bill Laswell and LCD Soundsystem - and just released an album with his
new heavy metal-inspired band Ex Eye - would rather not even entertain
the question.

But, in a generous mood, he indulges: "To me, it's everybody else's
job to talk about that," he said. "It's something I don't ever want to
take part in, because not only do I not see it in those terms, I don't
make music thinking about it. My perfect audience is one that has no
frame of reference ... not even knowing it's a sax being played.
They're hearing (my music) without any expectation."
