has informed today that as a result of the protest
organized by environmentalists demanding to dismantle an illegal
building in Khosrov Reserve yesterday, the Ministry of Nature
Protection of the Republic of Armenia has held a meeting today with the
participation of the environmentalists and members of the interagency
committee examining the mentioned issue.

Yeghia Nersisyan, an environmentalist, has just informed the details of
the discussion during a conversation with In response to
a question whether the discussion had been efficient, Yeghia Nersisyan
said, “Not fully.” Then talking about the details of the discussion,
he stated, “It has become clear from the discussion that the ministry
thinks over

the issue of destroying or not destroying the half-finished building.

They say, the man has invested, has had the half of the building
built, anyway, in case of dismantling, an issue of compensation will
arise. The interagency committee established by the ministry will
negotiate with Hovazadzor, the company that has built the building,
till September.” In response to our question why the negotiations were
necessary, if building in that area was banned, thus, the half-finished
building was illegal, Yeghia Nersisyan said, “That question has
occurred to us environmentalists too… we will have to wait and see.”

The environmentalist informed us that during the discussion, the issue
of banning ecotourism in Khosrov Reserve and returning the reserve
a reserve status was also raised. According to Yeghia Nersisyan, the
Minister of Nature Protection agreed with them on that issue, stating
that even the locals had to be banned from entering the reserve,
since anyone could enter the reserve these days, paying 500 AMD.

John Avakian’s ‘Family Bio 30’ was named ‘Best of Show’ at an Attleboro
Arts Museum exhibit in June.

The first in a monoprint series by artist John Avakian dates back
about three years.

And two generations, who both experienced the Armenian Genocide
of 1915.

And “Family Bio 30,” one of the newer pieces, was named “Best of Show”
during “Remembering,” an exhibit the Attleboro Arts Museum hosted
from June 16 to June 30.

Avakian says the series was inspired by his desire to leave “something
behind of me and my family that will live on beyond my lifetime.”

Each monoprint includes family photos, as well as images from books,
magazines and other sources, Avakian says.

“It’s hard to say when that’ll be over,” Avakian says of this series,
from which he submitted three pieces to the show.

“It’s the past and the present coming together as memory.”

Memories of the Armenian Genocide weren’t discussed in Avakian’s home
during his childhood, he recalls.

“My father lost the entire family, and he was angry most of the time,”
says Avakian, who, in 1999, started a separate monoprint series on
the genocide.

“My mother, a couple of brothers survived, and she had nightmares. She
used to scream at night about the terror that she faced as a child.

“My father never even talked about it. I never knew what happened. I
had to ask my mother why I didn’t have any relatives, and she said
his family was wiped out completely.”

Avakian, who has a painting background, says he began creating
monoprints in 1989 after being introduced to the medium by someone
at the Boston Museum School.

“She told me how to do that, and they were relatively easy to do
compared to painting,” says Avakian, who now teaches there part time.

He previously taught full time at Northeastern.

People have called the Family Bio monoprints “beautiful,” Avakian says.

“I think they are, even though the subject matter may be a little
somber,” he says.

“I hope they get the beauty, and the sadness.”

EDB Recorded An Industrial Production Growth Decline In All The CIS

EDB RECORDED AN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION GROWTH DECLINE IN ALL THE CIS COUNTRIES, BESIDES ARMENIA AND TAJIKISTAN

ARMENPRESS
30 July, 2012
YEREVAN

Yerevan, July 30, ARMENPRESS: The CIS kept up the past paces of
its economic growth in the first quarter of the current year. As
“Armenpress” was informed by the expert of the Eurasian Development
Bank, Mikhail Mzareulov, the economic growth amounted to 4.65% in
January-March of last year in comparison with the same period of 4.67%
in 2011. At the same time the rate of the development of the global
economy was 0.1%.

The experts mention that such a rate is explained by the accelerated
economic growth of Russia, which reached from 4.1% to 4.9%. A serious
decline of growth (6.9% to 3%) is noticed in the countries exporting
industrial products- Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan; and a sharp economic
decline (6.8%) in Kirgizstan. Industrial production growth retardation
was observed in all the countries of the region, with the exception
of Armenia and Tajikistan. At the same time a certain activization is
noticed in the trade, services, construction, and industrial export
sectors, which talks about the consumer and investment activity.

In the first quarter of the year, as well as the preceding period,
despite the retardation of the growth rates, oil international prices
growth in foreign trade provided the profit for Russia, Kazakhstan,
Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Energy resources importing countries,
particularly Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Armenia, balance
their trade negative balance through the money transfers received
from Abroad.

One of the specifications of the period was the low inflation rate.

Totally the inflation in the region was 2.4% (except for Belarus).

Records on individual countries’ economic development were also
included in the “CIS macromonitor”. It is particularly mentioned that
Azerbaijani GDP index increased by only 0.5% in the first quarter of
the year in comparison with the same period of last year. Despite the
annual 7.7% increase in oil and gas sector the decrease in economic
growth had some influence on the index of economic growth. In Armenia
GDP maintained the 2011 second term dynamics. This indicator of last
year has exceeded the level of 4.9%.

Metallurgical industry (16.6%) was foundational. At the same time
the inflation continued to fall reaching the lowest index in the
last six years annually 0.5%. Significant progress was recorded
in reducing the budget deficit process reaching 0.2%. However, the
experts mention that in case of the steady decline in metal prices,
the country will be deprived of growth factors which can make the
country’s economy more vulnerable to external negative factors.

The Eurasian Development Bank is an international financial
organization founded in 2006 by Russia and Kazakhstan.
